Removing First Network Home Server

In Workgroup Manager, when you click on the "Home" tab for a user, you are presented with a list of home directory shares under the "Where" column. My problem is that I can't seem to remove the first one (after "(None)"). When I setup the server containing my first network home directories, I used the IP address. Now I've added it again using the DNS name, as that gives me more flexibility. But I can't remove the first one. When I select it, the "Remove" and "Edit" buttons are grayed out. I can change any of my other shares, but not that one.
Anyone know why not answer? I can't believe I'm stuck with it forever. Do I have to do it using the ldap command line tools?
It isn't because users have home directories on that server, as I have changed them all (and the second one has user directories but I can still delete it). But that leads to an interesting question: if I edit a home directory server record, for example the third in the list, and change where it is pointing, say to a completely different server, will the home directories for all of the users pointing to that third record change as well? If I delete the record, will the users get errors or will they default to "(None)" or what happens?
Thanks much,
Nathan

Hmm, here's some more info. The other reason I wanted to get rid of the first one is because I changed the home directory server's name. The IP is still the same, but the name had a typo. I was able to stop sharing the directory again and stop AFP and when I turned it back on, the afp:// link had changed from the IP to the DNS name. But the /Network path was using the old host name. It seemed to work, but I wanted it displayed correctly. What I ended up doing was going through and changing the computer's name in all of the config files in /etc (hostconfig is the main one, but all of them should be changed) and that corrected the typo in the /Network path.
I'd still like to know why I can't delete it, but I can stop it and make it disappear.
But it looks like I got the results I wanted.
Thanks,
Nathan

  • Network home on non-system volume unavailable

    Hey y'all,
I had this running fine for the past 2 years, did some dir server reloads and now its broke!
Running the AD/OD triangle 2003/10.4.9 servers and clients. Network homes served from my Dirserver's system drive work as expected, but not when the homedir mount point is on a separate volume ( apple RAID or slave HD ). The share is otherwise accessible via browse from a local acct. Specifically the error reads, you guessed it "...The home folder is located on an AFP or SMB server...".
I read a post in here where the postee found his own solution to be entering the profile path as //server/volumes//nameofothervolume . AD tells me this is totally invalid when i put the double // in the path anywhere other than the beginning, and doesnt work for me when i leave it there anyway. I've tried many profile path configurations: local host name, FQDN, ip, etc...no dice when the share is anywhere but the system drive.
I've done my research on all this - DNS is working according to Bombich's article "Leveraging AD". OD sends out mcx as intended. AD/OD general setup was followed from J. Rennich's AD/OD v2.0 guide. SSO works great for my Mobile users.
    Ideas? Suggestions? Thanks.

Alright, I answer my own post. The problem turns out to be that i did not have the Windows service running on my xserve. I don't have windows clients hitting that server so I left it off. Apparently it has to be running when you set your user's profile path in AD. Its working great now. Hope this info helps someone else.

  • Drop files in Network Home on Server?

I want to add a folder with a file inside to everyone's desktop that has a network home account. Only 25 users but wanted to do it from the server where the network homes are stored. Logged in with Admin credentials but I'm denied access when trying to open the users desktop folder. Is that normal behavior? If it is how can I achieve this?

    Hi
+"Logged in with Admin credentials but I'm denied access when trying to open the users desktop folder. Is that normal behavior?"+
    Yes.
    +"It is how can I achieve this?"+
Log in as root or use terminal as root. To log in as root log out by selecting log out from the Apple Menu. At the login window enter root as the name and use the password you're using or the admin account. Once logged in you should be able to do whatever you want. However use the 'power' of root with caution as once logged in this way you can delete anything you like.
If there's important data on this server try and make sure you have an effective and current backup first - just in case.
Another way of doing this which I think you should consider first is to create a share that is accessible to everyone. Place that folder with the file inside it into that share. Apply a Policy that maps the share as a network drive which mounts on user login. Instruct the users to copy the folder/file to their Desktop. When they're done remove the share as well as the Policy. From your perspective you've achieved maximum effect with minimal effort.

  • Locked Out of Windows Home Server 2011 - Removed Password

    Hi All
I made a bit of a boo boo. This relates to Windows Home Server 2011. Basically I needed my server to boot directly to desktop and not go to a login screen. I thought I know I will just remove the password (bad decision).
It now goes to the login screen and it won't let me login with no password. It says something about not being allowed.
So I am now stuck at the Login screen. I don't really want to have to re-install the OS again, so any help would be great.
    Cheers

    Hello neilmjones,
mmm, there is something strange: if you was able to reset password to blank, then the System was set to permit blank passwords (System Policies), so you should be able to login too.
Are you sure you reset password to blank ?
Answering to your first question, once you resolve login issue, you can follow this

to Enable Auto-Logon for your Server.

  • All 30 minutes my Macs (iMac/Snow Leopard, MacMini/Lion) are loosing the connection to the Windows Servers (2 Networks: Home with Home Server 2011 (Server 2008) and Office with Home Server V1 (Server 2003)).

    Hallo,
    Hello,
I run the office and at home each a Microsoft Home Server. In both networks, in addition to various Windows computers, a Mac is available.
The particular "configuration" is as follows:
    - Apple MacMini (Late 2011, as HTPC) with Lion via wifi via AVM Fritzbox 7390 to Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 (Windows Server 2008).
    - Apple iMac (Late 2010, desktop PC) with Snow Leopard by Lan on AVM Fritzbox 7270 on Microsoft Windows Home Server V1 (Windows Server 2003)
All operating systems on current conditions with all patches and updates.
The Fritz boxes running with the latest firmware
    Now to the problem:
Both Macs are loosing every 30 minutes the contact to the server. The connection is "re-"established about 1-2 minutes later. On MacMini (HTPC), the film or music is stopped for the above period. Thereafter, the film / music goes on. With the iMac (workstation) a document loaded from the server can no longer be saved or printed.
The MacMini has shown this phenomenon directly in connection with the WHS. However, the iMac has been working about 1.5 years with no problems. This problem only occurs for about 6-9 months
Because of different WHS and OS X versions are affected and also different Fritz boxes are used and it seems to be a general problem in the interplay Windows / OS X to be present.
When the iMac is the exact date of disconnection does not occur.
With the Mac Mini, the time can however be determined relatively easily. From the Event Viewer on Windows Server is unfortunately no clear error image. At the particular time but appeared relatively often, but not always (!) In Windows Security Logs the error 4625 (Failed to log on an account) on. This would indicate a rights issue.
Searching for a solution (so far unsuccessfully, unfortunately), I stumbled over the problem of the Server Infrastructure License Services (silsvc) in Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (every 30 min!). Maybe a connection?

Hi, and thank you for your reply!
My reason for not posting this in the server forum is that I suspect it is a clien issue. All my other clients connect happily to the server which leads me to believe the server is configured correctly.
Only my the two MacBook Pro's are having problems.

  • Elements 11 can't see my home server (network drive)

I just installed Elements 11 on a new computer.  When I try to import photos, the program cannot see my home server, which is where all the photo files are.  It is seeing that I'm on a network because all the other computers on my home network are visible.  Just not the server.  I can see the server without a problem when I go into File Explorer.  It is open and I can open files on it with no problem, but still Elements isn't seeing it.  When I try to Map a Network Drive, it just creates some bogus additional drive rather than going to the actual drive.
I have Elements 10 on another computer and have been able to access the drive without a problem there.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks.

  • Windows 8.1 Photos app doesn't display photos from Home Server V1 network drive

I have my photos stored on a Home Server V1 network drive (\\homeserver\photos) and I have added the drive to the Pictures library. When I open the library in desktop Explorer I can see all the photos
and my Photos live tile shows photos from the network drive. When I open the Photos app I can see all the folders. However, when I open a folder I get the message 'There are no files or folders in this view.'
    Any help is appreciated.
I am running Windows 8.1 with the latest updates.

Adding another voice to this - I hit exactly the same issue myself yesterday.  I haven't got the device with me now, but as the original poster says:
I have \\server\photos mapped to my p:\ drive in Windows 8.1, and this is in my pictures library.
The p:\ drive has many (100s) subfolders, which I can browse using Windows explorer and desktop apps like Picasa.
When I start the "photos" app, I see all my folders (each with a thumbnail picture), but when I click into a folder I just get the "There are no files or folders in this view".
It's probably worth saying that as this is Home Server v1, I had a bit of fun and games to get permissions right to access the share:
I log into Windows 8.1 (on a Surface Pro 3) using my Microsoft account
I've mapped the home server photo drive to "P:\" on my SP3; when I did this I provided the admin user ID and password for the home server and told windows to remember the credentials.
I added p:\ to my pictures library in Windows 8.1 on the SP3.
FWIW - I use a similar mechanism to add music from my home server to my music library, but the XBox Music app seems to be able to see individual tracks OK.
    Any ideas?

  • Opinions on G3 450mHz B&W as home server or network backup system

    Hi all,
I just got a G3 450mHz Blue and White Server and am using it as a jukebox right now but was thinking of also using it as a backup machine for my other macs. So my question is am I better just getting an ethernet switch and using file sharing to make it a back up machine or should I use it as a home server. If I use it as a home server should I get any special kind of pci card? Also if anybody has a site they can recommend on how to do this please let me know. Sorry for all the questions.
    Roland

Does it still have the Server software loaded?
In schools, they use Mac OS X Server and set most student users up as Network users, and put their Home Directories on the Server instead of locally in /Users/<your_id>. This allows any user to log on to any school computer and get their files instantly, since they are actually stored on the server.
You can buy used CDs of an old version of Mac OS X Server for less than the US$1000. price of the current unlimited users version. It will support about 150 users doing File Sharing.
For a school, you add a Gigabit Ethernet card and Gigabit Switch. This makes file access on the Server nearly as fast as a Hard Drive.

  • Mac OS X Server, Network Home Directories & Time Machine

    hi,
I am using mac os x server to manage a small workgroup using open directory and network home directories, the server is backed up using time machine. From what I understand, time machine does work on network home directories.
However, as I am backing up my server using Time Machine, it is already backing up the user directories. Is there any way of getting a client to access the server time machine backup to access the backups of the user directories?
Of course, it would be easy to restore files by logging onto the server as the user and restoring from there. I am just wondering if there is a more elegant solution available to do this from a client machine.
    any thoughts?
    thx!

    Hi,
I am trying to do the same exact thing and find that it is best to do this locally (for now). Not only is the network way slower, but it seems to make things worse. For example, things backed up via the client machine are routed from the FTP server/volume mount and different permission wise. When you try to restore them locally, it should work, but the folder had different permissions because they were initially created in root (for me). So, I hope they would come out with something better than what is available now. Thanks!

  • Mountain lion server network accounts are not mounting network home directory, rather its creating a blank local directory

I have set up a scratch mountain lion server with open directory.  copied over old user account directories and added my users that match the directory ids.  Currently if a networked user logs into a networked computer, instead of mounting the network home directory, its creating a local home directory.  suggestions?
    thanks,

Additional info: it appears that certificates are not working either: setting up ical: "the certificate for this server was signed by an unknown certifying authority."...

  • LR photos, network storage and Windows Home Server photo sharing?

I'm trying to integrate my photos, now on a local desktop hard drive into my new Window Home Server network and Lightroom.
I've read up on network storage and LR.  I do have a question about photo sharing through Windows Home Server.  WHS has a Photos folder for sharing photos over the network.  I'm assuming that I should store LR related photos in another folder (I know about the catalog having to be on the local computer where LR resides) and then copy photos to be shared to the Photos folder?
I'm also wondering about the utility of having LR photos on the network storage and only accessing them through the local computer vs having photos on the local computer and having copies on the network.
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone about how they have organized LR, WHS and network storage.

    See this FAQ:

  • IPhoto not showing up -- Network Home Folders on Windows server

When our users who have their home folder on a Windows server open iMovie, they can't access their iPhoto library within iMovie. The same is true for the 3rd party app, ComicLife. Is there something going wrong where the Windows server is screwing up whatever links the iPhoto library with other apps? Users who are on the Apple server are working just fine.
Thanks for any help you can give.
For reference, this is any mac client on 10.4.9 with Networked home folders going to either Win2003 server or Mac Server 10.4.10.

In case anyone else is looking... This was being caused by connecting to the home folders on the windows server using AFP. Switching it to SMB fixed the problem.

  • Network home permissions -- SMB connection on Win2003 Server

Has anyone had any problems with permissions with SMB network home folders on a Windows 2003 server?
With 10.4, our users can connect and edit all of the files in their home folder. They also have no access to any other home folders other than they can see the folder name.
With 10.5, their root home folder is locked and they have read-only access to the same folder with the same permissions as 10.4. Other mac-created folders such as Dekstop, Documents, Music, Library, etc. list them as "custom access" but the users do have permission to create and edit files in these folders. Folders created by windows (My Music, My Pictures) are locked and have read-only access like the root home.
This issue is making it so the users cannot login. They get the "Your are unable to log in to the user account "xxxxxx" at this time - Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred"
These computers are working file for home folders that connect via AFP to a mac server. It's just SMB to Windows.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    JB

    Problem solved:
When creating new shares on Win2003 server there is a flagged checkbox in the shared sessions under computer management that defaults to read only (both Windows and Apple shares). Took our network guy about 30 minutes to mine down there and find it. THANKS MICROSOFT for SHARING THIS - you meatheads!!!
    Hope this helps others

  • Is it possible to use a 10.9 server for authentication to apple clients without providing a network home?

We are testing 10.9 server with 2 10.9 clients.  We would like to get away from Network Homes completely, but still provide authentication from our servers.  All users homes need to be on the local Workstations.  So far we have had no success.  Test user accounts that we have created with homes on the 10.9 server login fine.  However, user accounts that we have created with no homes get the infamous shake.  I havent been able to find anything in the logfiles on the server that indicate what the problem might be.  Im thinking this setup may not even be possible.
    ddh

Firstly not only is this more than possible but it really should be easy.
Let's pretend the local account on one of your workstation's is 'dwayne' and has a password to match. You'd create a user account using the Server App with the same credentials (username and password). On configured shares add that user account to the share as an ACL (not a POSIX user), apply desired permissions and propagate.
Alternatively create an account that is not related to the dwayne local account in any way. Let's call it 'user' instead with a password to match. You use that instead to connect to the server.
Treat every other user in the same way.
By connect I mean "Connect to Server" from the Go Menu. When using the Go Menu you can either use the server's IP address (eg: 172.16.16.254) or it's FQDN (assuming DNS is set up correctly) or even it's Bonjour name (eg: server.local).
It really makes no difference whether you create a user with a network home or for services only. It's all about how you connect to the Server. If you've gone for networked homes you could bind client workstations to the server if you wish (although there's no real requirement for you to do so) and providing the required network elements are in place and functioning correctly (we're rmostly talking about DNS here) users with networked accounts will be able to log in and access their home folders on any workstation that's been bound to the mac server. But you could just as easily not bind client workstations and use the same account details to access a properly configured server shares (and additionally the user's network home folder) by selecting "Connect to Server" from the Go Menu instead.
