Repair Permissions strangeness

My MacPro just quit while I was working in Photoshop. No error, just exit to a blue screen. Restarted the computer and immediately did a repair permissions. In the repair log, I must have had a thousound lines of this kind of code....

Last week I upgraded to the latest version of QT, but things had been running fine until today. As I say, there must have been 1000 of these errors in the log and all of them had to do with QT.
Anybody know what's going on here?

Note: For years, standard POSIX permissions did a good job of defining access to our files and folders. But as our needs have become more complex, operating systems have begun implementing access control lists to help handle things. When Apple shipped Mac OS X 10.4, they added a robust granular permissions model. Unfortunately, only Mac OS X Server ships with a GUI for manipulating these permissions.
Access control lists are an integral part of Leo, and since their settings override posix permission settings, ignoring them is not going to be possible if you are going to continue use Leo (or any other modern OS for that matter).
The one and only ACL GUI interface available to help users of the standard version of Leo is "SandBox", fortunately it is free and now (as of version 2.2) is a reasonably easy to use program with decent help included.
Leo users: Do yourself a favor and learn about ACL's, they are not going away.
Actually a very good article on ACL's is available from microsoft. It is called:
How to shoot yourself in the foot with security, part 2 to ACL or not to ACL;
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512610.aspx
Although due to OS differences, not everything mentioned may apply to Leo, but still has loads of good info including a very detailed explanation of the "deny everyone delete" ACL used extensively in Leo.

  • Repair Permissions leaves strange message.

Right after upgrading to SNOW, I did Repair Permissions. ( I have found that after installing or upgradings, that repairing permissions saves me a lot of headaches down the line.)
    These messages came up:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
What is this? Should I be concerned about it?

No worries...totally innocuous for your use.

  • Repairing permissions - Error: No valid packages(?!) Wha?

Computer's been doing strange things lately. Not recognizing my airport signal (none of my neighbor's wireless signals either); not recognizing any printers when time to print; no quicktime playback; some sent and received emails lost in space, etc. So I'm getting ready for an archive and install when I think I'll try repairing permissions first. Verifying disk says volume is fine. But i get an immediate error of no valid packages for repairing permissions. Anyone know what this means and how to rectify it?

    First "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Verify & Repair if needed, then use Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature...

  • Repairing permissions after 10.5.8 update extreme oops maybe???

Ok I understand that there is still the issue of Repairing permissions regarding hard code links no big deal. Apple still has not fixed this in this update.
The problem that I have at the moment is understanding why the dbase is not updated properly it appears.
After applying the update to two separate machines both intel based and running Repair permissions through Disk Utility which is what I always do after any os update, there were some very strange oddities that pertains to core files and even after reboots and rechecking seferal times there is no change.
Someone at Apple messed up I think and did not update the permissions dbase during or after the update. I also used the Combo updater versus the smaller regular update as I always do to to avoid some intermittent occasional install problems some tend to see when using the smaller updaters.
Anyone else seeing this and how big of an issue is it to have it show for core files permissiona "should be ?--------- ," ??

    Permissions repair complete

Yea it is strange, I did not have the time on the two operating systems to do a proper backup so I can not go back as you did.
I did reapply the delta update though over the top of one of the Combos and although I ended up with less apparently than with the original combo update there were still several.
One thing I did do was to go to the file level of this one which now reads "System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CarbonC ore.framework/Versions/A/_CodeSignature/CodeResources", should be ?--------- , they are ---------
When inspecting that one the in the info window it now shows no more system or wheel and only everyone with the item marked as no access.
Considering that this is within the folder now called "_CodeSignature" and the root folder above this folder which is "A" has a CodeResources file inside it which has all the normal permissions set properly. I am wondering if this is something that was actually moved to this new folder instead of deleted and that the permissions tool may be looking at this file as it would with the parent folder if that makes sense. If this is part of the security updates portion why wouldn't Apple just remove it or is there something else going on that I am missing.
On the other side to note is that all of the files that are giving this error with permissions in the core files are all inside a folder called "_CodeSignature".
This may actually be nothing to worry about as it may be a way for the security patches to work properly to ensure the corrected resources are in place, If so though why are they not getting deleted with the updates as one would expect and why would this keep reappearing constantly and are these files in the "_CodeSignature" folders actually able to be trashed manually if Apple doesn't need them there and if they do then why are they set for no access?
    Confusion is a wonderment uh?

  • Permissions/Strange things happening...

I am having some strange issues with my Mac, and I'm fairly sure it's down to permissions but can't see why/how.
My Mac has 2 accounts, 1 being an Admin account and then my account (which is also Admin). My account automatically logs in.
When I try to download anything from any web browser, I get an error message saying I'm trying to modify the 'Admin' desktop folder. I have set up my browsers to download to my desktop, other folders on the hard disk but nothing works.
When I use Transmit, in the side bar it has the desktop and documents folders but it is displaying the folders from the Admin area.
I have 'bodged' the downloading issue by changing the permissions on the Admin's desktop folder to make me the owner but I'd like to know the correct way of fixing this.
    Any help would be appriciated.
    Thanks,
    Vaughn.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Vaughny.
You should be the owner of everything in your home folder.
    Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
    • Navigate to YourHome/Library.
    • Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
    • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
    • Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    • Click on "apply to all"
    • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.
    Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.

  • Can't Repair Permissions and other issues

Just updated to 10.5.2 and started having some video problems. The laptop won't wake from sleep, or if it does, the screen may go blank again. Also, upon waking sometimes, the mouse seems sluggish almost as if there is a remote user. Tried repairing permissions and can't get it to repair permissions. Also, when I switch users or try to authorize installations, it tells me the user name or password of one of the administrator's is incorrect and I know it's not. Very strange things.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Did you backup your data before updating?

  • Leopard: Repair Permissions - Installdb - massive memory usage!

It's been known for a while now that the disc utility isn't running up to snuff on leopard. There was a recent update that now allows the time-bar to run, showing you how long you have to wait 'till done (which was definitely a fix from there being no time-bar at all). However, I'm finding a very strange thing occurs when I try to repair permissions.
Simultaneously as I tried repairing, I ran the activity monitor to see what the processes looked like on my ram (I'm operating on 512, which I know is a bit low for the new OS). What I found was that there's a process name called installdb, that was going haywire. When I began to repair the permissions, the installdb process was using less than a dozen mb of ram, within minutes my cpu was heating up super-fast, and I found this installdb was sucking up more and more ram, until finally the process shut down (of its own accord?) at 220 MB of ram used.
Of course my page in-out count got super high at that point because I'm only using 512 to begin with, but I just have to think that something in the installdb process is responsible for the difficult times with disc repair.
As well, while the new update solved one particular permission issue (already discussed, SUID file), it seems to have left many more in its wake. I get the following list of messages now from repair disc, and this list has not changed, despite having repaired permissions 3 times in the last 2 days.
Anyone have a heads up on either the installdb process, or the below-listed repair issues?
    Permission repair issues:
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources /DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/readconf ig" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Thanks a ton,
    ZenChess

PS: I notice that after the permissions repair was complete, my activity monitor went from an average of 230 MB's of free ram, to 305. So it looks like the repair permissions did have an effect, although the messages left behind said no repairs went into effect.
    Totally confused,

  • REpairing permissions - very time consuming - why ?

    Hi Forum
After installed leopard my Diskutility takes several minutes to repair permissions.
    Any suggestions to why ?
    yours
    Bo
Ps. I've made an upgrade from a clean Tiger 10.4.10

    Bo,
Beginning is very RAM-demanding: on my iMac G4 it takes more than 40 minutes!
We don't know yet whether this is temporarily "clumsy" state of the new young OS.
Let's hope there will be something implemented in the next free updates,
and let's hope the confusing and worrying strange messages will disappear too.
Safe enough tip to kill time:
Do not interrupt the process, but you can use Safari while it is running.

  • Repair permissions Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit, ever since time machine system restore

Recently had to restore system 10.5.8 Leopard startup volume using Time machine. After many hours of migrating additional important databases that were recovered from failing startup drive, everything seemed to be back up and running smoothly on a new WD 1tb Black drive. Right before I run timemachine again to backup the new revised seemingly stable startup volume, I choose to repair disk permissions using disk utility. Repair permissions failed with this error, The underlying task reported faliure on exit. I tried using the OS X DVD to repair permissions, Diskwarrior, Onyx, none are able to reapair the disk permissions. Although everything seems perfect I would imagine that the system will fail eventually. It's strange that I had no problems repairing disk permissions in the past on this particular system that was the most recent backup. What should I do ?

Repair permissions always reports a bunch of stuff.  Ignore it if it says it completed successfully.
Also note that is it usually a waste of time (except maybe after a system upgrade).

  • Repairing permissions, how?

hi, i just bought new macbook last week, and want to upgrade to 10.4.8, but am hesitant after reading some articles. what steps should i take to a proper installation (i know repairing permissions is one, but am not sure how to do so)?, or should i wait a little longer to install 10.4.8?

    Hi Drew,
In OSX it is important to verify and (if necessary)repair permissions before and after you update the OS or install additional software.
You will be notified if OSX permissions differ and need to be repaired.
To do this you need to follow the following steps:
1 - Click on the FINDER icon in the dock
    2 - Go to UTILITIES
    3 - Open DISK UTILITY
when you open DISK UTILITY it will search for your HD and any other storage device connected to your Mac.
Select your HD it should be "Macintosh HD" unless you have changed the name.
On the right side of the DISK UTILITY window you will see a number of tabs
First Aid - Erase - Raid - Restore
    of these select "First Aid"
At the bottom of the widow (just above the description of the selected hard drive you will see 2 buttons on the left "Verify Permissions" and "Repair Permissions" and 1 on the right side "Verify Disk"
Click on "Verify Permissions" to check the state of OSX if you see a message saying that permission differ then you need to "repair permissions"
That is it, easy and will save you some head aches in the future.
When using OSX you will find that sometimes (not very often) it starts acting strange or unusually sluggish, the first thing you need to do in these cases is check OSX permissions and if they are OK then use "Verify Disk"
    I hope this helps

  • Repair Permissions Stalls

I have 1.3.9 on a dual 1 Ghz G4. Recently when I ask Disk Utility to repair permissions on the boot partition (I have three partitions), it does so but stalls at exactly the same point each time (about 25% of the routine). A window then appears saying that "lost connection with Disk Management Tool and cannot continue." I have tried the procedure from external system discs with the same results.
Not sure where to go from here. The only other strange thing going on is that Safari takes about 30 seconds to boot but otherwise works ok. I have a Media 100 card in the computer but that has been there for 3 years. It does prevent the computer from going to sleep but that has not been a problem.

If you look in the yellow box (sticky) a little above this post on the main page you'll see your issue addressed. This link will also take you there.
    Cheers!

  • How to fix? finder problems - apps quitting - can't repair permissions?

I don't really know where to begin. I downloaded a software update the other day, but can't remember what it was, and am anyway unsure if that's related.
Suddenly, several programs have started not launching. They'll hang, act strangely if they open at all, and often not launch, period.
    And the problem is expanding.
I've done numerous hardware diagnostics, all coming back fine. I've defragged the disk.
I've attempted to verify and repair permissions, and every time, it hangs toward the end of the process, requiring a 'suicide'.
I live in Cambodia, so any solutions especially not requiring the purchase of software unavailable here (almost all of it) would be welcome, but any help in understanding the problem is appreciated.

If you have your installer disks then try this:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.0.6 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Defragging is unnecessary with Panther. Panther defrags automatically for files under 20 MBs in size. Furthermore, if you disk is damaged or corrupted in any way defraggin can worsen the problem to the point of having to erase and reinstall.
    I hope you maintain backups.

  • Problem:  I have to run repair permissions to access the internet using safari, firefox or chrome on my mac pro.  What can I do to fix the problem once and for all?

This is what I get when I run repair permissions in disk utility. Thanks for any assistance you can give.

  • Help With Repair Permissions!

    Hi All,
I have a June 2009 17" 2.8 UMBP. I keep getting regular Spinning Beach Balls, Lock Ups, Delays and a whole host of Trackpad Issues much like many people are experiencing with the 1.7 Firmware Update which only is supposed to affect the 13" & 15" UBMP Models. I read on another post that Apple recommended to "Verify & Repair Disk Permissions" which I done. The problems still remain and the report in "Verfiy Permissions" is exactly the same (it seems) as that of the "Repair Permissions" and where it says "Repair Permissions Complete" at the end. The "Repair Permissions" Report still says that "Permissions Differ" on all lines - how can they have been repaired if they still differ? I am a novice and not technically aware about Macs so I hope someone can help me. Here is a copy of the report:

How do I fix things so things do not differ? I am hoping that will then fix the issues I am experiencing with my UBMP!
    Thank You,
    Suave!

    Hi
I think you will find that many people are suffering this very same problem with permissions, it is nothing to be too concerned about and will in all probability disappear after a system update sometime in the future.
There was a similar problem when I had a PowerBook G4 every time you repaired permissions it showed a whole raft of errors which would not go away. Eventually Apple released a system update and they all vanished.
It is not broken and it is not going to impact on the running of the computer in anyway.
I have just got a new MBP and have the same permission problem but my trackpad is functioning perfectly and I don't suffer any spinning beach ball.
I would contact Apple, or go into an Apple Store and seek advice about the trackpad and spinning beach ball as these are probably caused by other problems than permissions being wrong.
