Repeat command in illustrator

Hello,
Is there a repeat command like the one you find in office (control+Y).
My problem is that I have a bunch of objects in a page, each one is 100 pixels height, I want to change each one to 95.
Any suggestions?
By the way, is there any format painter like you have in office? The brush simbol.
Thanks in advance!

  • File and keyboard commands in Illustrator CC not responding.

    I'm having massive problems with Illustrator CC. The open and paste commands work once or twice and then nothing. Unless I quick the program, they will not work. I have tried everything. I took the drastic step today and erased the hard disk today and loaded EVERYTHING again. And I mean everything.  I even tested it with no fonts activated to see whether it's a font conflict. Still not working. I'm done. I have nothing left to test. What else can I do? Has anyone else having this problem? I need help.

    All fixed for now Larry.
    Anhkil's time from Adobe helped enormously after I had wiped the hard disk. Seems there was only one avenue to look at after that. The user account permissions had become corrupted. Not sure why after wiping and starting from new. Created a new user and deleted the old one. (This move didn't work before wiping the hard disk). All working well at this time.

  • Implementing a "repeat command" function

    I'm working on a text editor, with much the same functionality as vi. I'm kinda stuck on the "repeat last command" feature. My thought was to get the most recent undoable edit, and then call a redo on it, but that doesn't seem to be working. Any ideas?

    I'm implementing undo/redo as outlined in this page
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/generaltext.html
    which basically consists of...
    1) create a new instance of UndoManager (defined in javax.swing.undo)
    2) register the document object of the text area as an UndoableEditListener
    3) implement undo and redo actions that extend AbstractAction (I copied these from the above page)
    4) call the UndoManager's undo and redo methods from the undo and redo actions.
    My idea for repeat was to call the UndoManager's editToBeUndone() method (the most recent edit) and call the redo() method of the UndoableEdit object that it returns. However, the editToBeUndone() method is protected, so I created a class that extends UndoManager and overrode the editToBeUndone() method as follows.
    public UndoableEdit editToBeUndone(){
         return super.editToBeRedone();
    This could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I've done something similar before.
    The other thing that could be a problem is the redo() method of the UndoableEdit class. In the API, it reads "Re-apply the edit, assuming that it has been undone." I don't really know what it means by, "assuming that it has been undone." Is there somewhere I can find a more detailed description? It doesn't throw a CannotRedoException.
    What is an undoable edit and not undoable are (presumably) defined in javax.swing.undo also.
    Thanks for your reply,
    jt

  • Using voice activation commands for Illustrator

    I was searching this forum to see if you can scroll (zoom) with the mouse wheel. I found a couple of short cuts that accomplishes the task (but not as easy as PS CS3 does).
    In PS CS3, I created a whole bunch of Dragon Naturally Speaking commands which, in effect, allowed me to speak the various PS commands (as opposed to clicking, dragging etc) with eh mouse and Wacom Pen.
    WITHOUT A DOUBT, this is the way to fly in PS. Speaking commands and having the program perform the function allows you to concentrate on the creation as opposed to what tool and when etc.
    Just being able (using the scrolling wheel example), to say "zoom" or "zoom out" instead of looking for the zoom icon clicking it and then clicking the work area helps tremendously.
    So, while looking for a way to Scroll in Illustrator, I got to thinking I will do the same thing for this application.
    Therefore, I was wondering if anyone had done the same thing here in Illustrator.
    I also posted this in the Windows forum.
    Anyway, just wondering.
    Bob

    Hi Jean,
    first, I had to let you know, and I am by no means connected in any form shape or manner with Dragon Naturally Speaking software.
    Second, I am actually dictating this message to you utilizing this voice activation software. I have been utilizing the Dragon for many years and this particular version happens to be one of the best that they have ever marketed.
    To give you an idea of the different commands that I utilized when creating very simple voice commands in the Dragon, here are some of the commands I created:
    Adjust color, adjust contrast, adjust curves, adjust hue saturation, adjust levels, auto color, (for the brushes if I wanted to increase them, bigger 1 bigger 2, bigger 5, bigger 7 (as you can see, it would increase the size of the brush dependent upon the number that followed the word bigger)), clone, copy, copy layer, crop, curves, cut, delete layer, deselect, duplicate layer, feather, erasure, eyedropper, etc., etc., etc)
    Once again, I am dictating this message and not typing it.
    Hopefully you can see we have a mouse in your hand, or a pen tablet and you are looking at the screen and reciting commands, and not having to look at the keyboard or the mouse or the walkom pen or what ever, and when you speak a command the application does exactly what you want, this allows you to concentrate on what you are trying to create as opposed to how to create it!
    This is the major differentiator between working manually (and trust me the pros on this forum can work very very fast manually), and working allowing your creativity to come to the front as opposed to your technical specific knowledge of the application and how to maneuver it.
    Anyway, I come out of many many years of information technology and this is probably one of the best combinations of applications that increases the efficiency of the individual working with said applications.
    I probably should go back and correct any recognition errors that the Dragon might have made (which were probably made because of my poor pronunciation were slurring of words), but I would rather not.
    It would be better for you to see (and I guess the other members of the form to see) the voice activation software can do for you.
    In closing, and once again I have to stress I am in no way affiliated with the Dragon, combining these two applications increases your productivity tenfold.
    Good luck, and I hope you shoulder feels better.
    Bob
    ps., ok so i lied, I corrected 5 small errors the Dragon made.... but you would have understood what I was trying to say anyway....

  • Repeat command or action like the F4 command in Excel

    In Excel there is a way to repeat the same command previously performed by pressing the F4 key. This makes thing like adding a new rows or columns and changing characteristics much easier. Is this option available in Numbers 2009? I have not been able to find it in Numbers 2008. It seems like a very easy option to have because the command is stored in memory in order to be able to undo and redo the command.
    My apologies for referencing such an inferior product class as Microsoft when discussing Apple programs but Excel is probably Microsoft's best program, has been around for a while, and Numbers is still a baby. Although, Numbers is much more idealistic in many respects which is great, especially considering its age.
    I want to find out if this issue has been addressed before I send feedback to Apple.
    ThankU Much,
    DarrellSY

    I too have been looking for this shortcut, disappointed it is not available. Also searing for the F2 command in Excel, which allows you to edit the cell to enter text without having to double click on it using a mouse.
    Also not available.
    If it's important, make a feature request.
    In Numbers, go to the Numbers menu, choose Provide Numbers Feedback. Submit your request. If enough users make the request to catch the development team's attention, you may see the feature (or something similar) added (but not before the next full edition).

    I've seen it in Indesign but can't seem to get it to work in illustrator. If not could anyone tell me how I would group all items together on a layer run a function then ungroup them again. I'm fairlt new to this and struggle with the documentation
    Thanks
    Bob

    Hi Bob,
    It's been a bit more difficult.
    (And there are already some handful Illustrator Scipters all over the world.)
    For the beginning you can try something like this:
    // https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1535178
    // MoveSimpleArtwork2NewGroup.jsx
    // regards pixxxelschubser
    var aDoc = app.activeDocument;
    aDoc.selectObjectsOnActiveArtboard();
    var sel = aDoc.selection;
    var newGroup = aDoc.groupItems.add();
    for (i=sel.length-1; i>=0; i--) {
        sel[i].moveToEnd(newGroup);
    alert("done");

  • How do I multiple pastea drawing horizontally, or vertically  in illustrator 10?

    I looked in the help topics of illustrator 10, and I did not find a multiple paste command or function. Help!!!!!!!

    That's because there is no "multiple paste" command in Illustrator.
    If you want to duplicate an object multiple times, you would paste it once (assuming you don't already have a copy in the document), and then create multiple copies using any of the following methods. (All expressed in terms of making a grid of multiple rows and columns. If you only want one row or one column, omit the unneeded steps.)
    The old fashioned way (available since AI 1.0):
    Drag one copy sideways (or move one copy sideways by a specified amount using any of the dialog-based Transform methods such as the Move command, the Transform Each command, or the Transform palette.)
    Press Control-D (Win)/Command-D (Mac) (for "Duplicate Transform") to repeat the action until you have the number of copies you need in a row.
    Select the whole row, and drag a copy up or down. (Or use any Transform method.)
    Press Control/Command-D to repeat the action until you have the number of rows you want.
    The Blend method (works in AI 8 or later):
    Drag out one copy sideways to where you want the last copy to go.
    With the Blend tool, click on the first copy, and then Alt(Win)/Option(Mac) click on the last copy. In the Blend dialog box, choose Specified Steps, and enter a number which is 2 less than the total number of copies you want in a row. (Since you already have 2 copies.) OK the dialog.
    Drag the whole blend down to where you want the last row to be.
    Select both blends and expand them into regular groups (Object>Blend>Expand).
    With the blend tool, click on one group and then alt-click on the other group, and enter 2 less than the number of rows you want.
    Expand that blend.
    This method is most useful if you have a lot of rows and columns, and you know how many you want but not exactly how far apart you want them to be. It's more complicated, but it can save you a bunch of Control-D's. It is also the best way to go if you want each copy to change slightly, such as getting lighter, rather than being exact duplicates.
    Finally, the newest method, using the Transform Effect (works in AI 9 or later):
    Select your one copy.
    Bring up the Effects>Transform&Distort>Transform dialog.
    Enter a horizontal move of the distance that you want each copy to move. (This is a move distance, not a gap distances.)
    Enter a number of copies which is 1 less than the total number you want in each row (since you already have 1.) OK the dialog.
    With the object still selected, invoke the same effect dialog again. This time, enter a vertical move distance and a number of copies which is 1 less than your desired number of rows. OK the dialog.
    If you want to be able to edit each copy independently, use the Object>Expand Appearance command.
    If you don't use Expand Appearance, you can edit the one selectable original, and all the copies will update to look the same. This is very handy for having one editable master copy and a bunch of duplicates, such as a layout of business cards. It can also be a neat trick for interactively designing a pattern fill.

  • Illustrator a poor substitute for Freehand for business users

    I have discovered to my horror that Snow Leopard makes it impossible for Excel graphs to be copied into Freehand any longer. This is 90% of the work I do and have been doing for 15 years. Since Adobe would like Freehand users to migrate to Illustrator, I thought I would give that a try to see what would happen.
    The graphs paste in, but they are sized above the size of the artboard, creating extra work.
    There are also issues with how the text boxes work (if I try to right-justify the x-axis numbers, they move to the left).
    In Freehand I religiously use the "Select -- Same as Selection -- Page" command as I complete the charts one by one, to change the strokes to the right weights for publishing and to methodically change the Excel colours to Pantone colours, etc -- all the things Microsoft does not allow for. However, as far as I can tell, when you use the "Select Same" command in Illustrator, it selects everything that matches on every artboard; this means I would have to have 80 separate Illustrator files for the reports I do that have 80 charts! Can anyone tell me if there is a way to select similar objects on individual artboards and not on all artboards at once?
    By far the worst problem I encountered is that, when I tried to paste line  graphs into Illustrator from Excel, all but one of the data lines would  disappear -- rendering the charts unusable for my client's analytical  purposes. Freehand never did this; all pasted charts came into Freehandas perfect vector graphics on only one layer.
    I used to do these time-sensitive charts in less than a minute each with Freehand's slick capabilities, and I'll be lucky to do each one in less than 30 minutes now -- putting me out of work in short order. For as long as humanly possible, I will keep using Leopard so that I don't have to try to use Illustrator for something Freehand can do 1,000 times better. Why, oh why, can't Illustrator interface with Excel the way Freehand can? Seems like we business users are being left out in the cold by both Apple and Adobe.

    Ok here is your new process. There will be little differences on some excel files but they shouldn't be too hard to tackle. Plus I'm always an email or a tweet away at @ask_illustrator
    1) Open your .xls in excel and choose File -> Save As. In the Format drop down, choose PDF.
    2) Open that .pdf in Illustrator. If it's a multi-page .pdf, AI will prompt you for which page to open.
    3) Choose Select -> All or press command+a.
    4) Choose Object -> Clipping Path -> Release. Then choose Object -> Compound Path -> Release.
    5) Repeat step 4 until both options have "Release" grayed out.
    6) Choose Select -> Deselect or just click anywhere outside of the work area with your selection tool.
    7) In your Color panel (Window -> Color) change both the fill and stoke colors to none by clicking the swatch (Window -> Swatches) that is white with a red diagonal line through it.
    8) Choose Select -> Same -> Fill & Stroke then press delete or backspace.
    The previous steps will prepare the artwork for editing and get rid of any un-needed shapes.
    9) now select an object that needs to be changed to a spot color
    10) Choose Select -> Same -> Fill & Stroke again and in the color panel, drag the color to the swatches panel to add it as a new swatch. Double-click your new swatch and choose Spot Color in the Color Type drop down menu.
    Any other clean up should be pretty obvious, just remember to use select same fill & stroke to grab similar shapes quickly.
    Welcome to AI!

  • "Convert to Profile" command in the Edit menu

    Sorely needed:  a "Convert To Profile" command in Illustrator's Edit panel, right under "Assign Profile", jut like in Photoshop.
    It's Color Management 101.
    Without it, Illustrator's color management abilities are stuck back in the stone age.
    The Illustrator engineers team should know exactly what I'm talking about.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
    Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
    In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
    Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be copied & renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to an earlier state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. If it has happened repeatedly you may want the earliest such file generated since the last iTunes upgrade.
    If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
    When you get it all working make a backup!
    Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
    I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

  • Adobe Illustrator crash problems

    Hey everybody,
    Having problems with Illustrator on my MBP. Had an older version for several months (pretty sure it was version 10). Worked OK except for some random crashes every now and again. Then crashes started happening more frequently until I could no longer open the program.
    Removed version 10 and tried installing CS2 version of illustrator. Installs fine but I've never been able to open it. Crashes every time during launch. Have tried making a new user and installing it there. Same result. Deleted all Version Cue files I could find and reinstalled. Same result.

    Hi Ken,
    Thanks for the suggestion. I did as you said but could not find a process called "translated" in the activity monitor.
    Were you having the same type of problem with Illustrator (crashing on startup)?
    I should also say that I made another attempt at installing Illustrator CS2 after deleting every Adobe related file on my computer (including Photoshop CS which I had been using without issue).
    This improved things a bit in that CS2 no longer crashes immediately as it starts up but instead makes it at least part of the way through the initialization process before crashing (can get it to go all the way through "updating fonts"). But it still never makes it all of the way through start up.
    Also, since my last post I've tried opening it after Safe Booting and this doesn't work either (actually it doesn't even get as far as detailed above).
    What do you all think? I'm thinking that a clean reinstall of the OS might be the only option left.

  • How do I make a repeat pattern in Photoshop CC?

    I am trying to make a seamless repeat pattern in photoshop. I used to be able to do this in older versions of Photoshop by adjusting the position of my artboard in Filter -> Other -> Offset.
    Now I can't seem to adjust the offset by adjusting the pixels according to the size of my artboard, but I have to choose a pixel number between -1182 and +1182 instead?
    For instance, if my artboard is 100px I used to be able to set it to 50px so the artboard shifts halfway to the right. Now I have to set it at (1182 : 4=) 295px to get my artboard to that same position.
    Plus, when I use 'wrap around' the objects in my artboard don't appear on the other side of the artboard as should be the case.
    What is going on? Does anyone know how I can easily make a repeat pattern in Illustrator now? Is there something like 'Pattern maker" for Photoshop cc,  like the one that used to be available for older versions of PS but is now disabled for Photoshop CC?
    Thanks a bunch!

    I had a similar problem. It occurred after I installed the 2014 apps and uninstalled CC versions. Apparently, InDesign and Illustrator CC2014 (and possibly others?) use the previous CC startup script files (on a Mac: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Startup Scripts CC), which are deleted if you uninstall the original CC apps. Luckily, we have multiple installations of CC in our office, and I was able to copy the missing files from another machine. I didn't try it, but you might be able to uninstall, then reinstall the apps (Illustrator and PhotoShop in your case) to replace the missing files. I found another post that seems to indicate this will work.
