Replacement of primary unit failed! (ASA5510 active/standby)

Hi all,
I have an issue bringing up my RMA'd primary ASA unit.
So what happened so far:
1. primary unit failed
2. secondary took over and is now secondary - active (as per sh fail)
2. requested RMA at Cisco
3. got ASA and checked that Lic (SSL), OS (8.2.2) and ASDM are at the same level as the secondary
4. issued wr erase and reloaded
5. copied the following commands to the new (RMA) primary unit:
failover lan unit primary
failover lan interface Failover Ethernet3
failover interface ip Failover 172.x.x.9 255.255.255.248 standby 172.x.x.10
int eth3
no shut
failover
wr mem
6. installed primary unit into rack
7. plugged-in all cables (network, failover, console and power)
8. fired up the primary unit
9. expected that the unit shows:
Detected an Active mate
Beginning configuration replication from mate.
End configuration replication from mate.
10. but nothing happened on primary unit
So can anyone give me assistance on what is a valid and viable approach in replacing a failed primary unit? Is there a missing step that hinders me to successfully replicate the secondary - active config to the primary - standby unit.
I was looking for help on the net but unfortunately I was not able to find anything related to ASA55xx primary unit replacement with a clear guideline or step by step instructions.
Any comments or suggestions are appreciated, and might help others who are in the same situation.
Thanks,
Nico

Hi Varun,
Thanks for catching-up this thread.

  • Surprises on Replacing failed primary unit

    Dear friends,
    I have done failover for firewalls umpteen number of times but yesterday it failed for some reason.
    I had replaced the failed primary unit with a fresh one and i had expected that it will detect the secondary unit as active and try to begin config replication from it but rather it wiped off the secondary unit's config. I dont think that i faulted in the sequence but let me share with you what i did:
    1. Put the four or five lines of failover configuration (except the failover command) and did a no shut on the failover interface (management0/0)
    2. Ran the failover command
    Instead of getting the config from the active unit, it started forcing the configs to the other unit. To restore, i had to reload the active unit to restore its config. After that i reloaded the fresh unit and now the failover happened as expected.
    I think that i should forced a reload of the new unit before trying to establish failover.
    Has anyone tried this in a fail-proof way during production hours? if yes, can you please share with me the steps?
    I did not ask for downtime because i was confident but i resulted in bringing down the ASA for 5 minutes because of the unexpected failover action.
    Thanks a lot
    Gautam

    Dear kureli,
    Thanks a lot for the efforts you took. I really appreciate it.
    Here's the exact sequence of steps that happened:
    1.  When primary unit failed, secondary got active and i dont remember if sh fail showed "secondary- not detected" or "secondary - failed"
    2.  I replaced the faulty primary unit with another primary unit and said no shut on the m0/0 failover interface and also put all the failover commands except "failover" command.
    3. I made sure that the new primary unit runs the same code (i checked only the main code version, i did not check the asdm version similarity). The asdm versions were different on both boxes though.
    4. After powering up the box and connecting cables, i said failover. It then prompted me saying that SSL license is not the same on both units and disabling failover.
    5. I applied for an activiation key from [email protected] and then got the SSL license from them.
    6. Next day i went back to the customer and installed the license key. After installing the license key, i said failover. It gave me the message "No response from mate"
    7. I then said no failover to disable failover on the new primary unit.
    8. I then went to secondary active unit and said failover as failover was disabled
    9. I then went back to primary unit and said failover
    10. This is where blank config replication started !!
    11. Reloaded secondary unit to undo the blank running config
    12. Went to Primary unit and disconnected the failover cable. Rebooted the primary unit and connected the failover cable.
    13. Secondary came up as active, primary then came up, and this time primary honored the secondary as active and did config replication
    14. All was well then!!
    Not sure still why this happened and it was a bit shameful for me to see this happening after 3.5 years of firewalling experience.
    Anyways, i am willing to learn and improve from now on.
    Probably next time, i would try to make sure that i apply the failover configs, reload, and while reload connect the failover cable.
    I think the learning lesson is that if the unit reloads, the reloaded unit always honors the currently active unit and does not try to override its role.
    This is what worked for me.
    Thanks a lot

  • ASA 5520: Configuring Active/Standby High Availability

    Hi,
    I am new to Cisco firewalls. We are moving from a different vendor to Cisco ASA 5520s.
    I have two ASA 5520s running ASA 8.2(5). I am managing them with ASDM 6.4(5).
    I am trying to setup Active/Standby using the High Availability Wizard. I have interfaces on each device setup with just an IP address and subnet mask. Primary is 10.1.70.1/24 and secondary is 10.1.70.2/24. The interfaces are connected to a switch and these interfaces are the only nodes on this switch. When I run the Wizard on the primary, configure for Active/Standby, enter the peer IP of 10.1.70.2 and I get an error message saying that the peer test failed, followed by an error saying ASDM is temporarily unable to connect to the firewall.
    I tried this using a crossover cable to connect the interfaces directly with the same result.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Dan

    The command Varun is right.
    Since you want to know a little bit more about this stuff, here goes a bit. Every interface will have a secondary IP and a Primary IP where the Active/Standby pair will exchange hello packes. If the hellos are not heard from mate, the the unit is delcare failed.
    In case the primary is the one that gets an interface down, it will failover to the other unit, if it is the standby that has the problem, the active unit will declare the other Unit "standby failed). You will know that everything is alright when you do a show failover and the standby pair shows "Standby Ready".
    For configuring it, just put a secondary IP on every interface to be monitored (If by any chance you dont have an available secondary IP for one of the interfaces you can avoid monitoring the given interface using the command no "monitor-interface nameif" where the nameif is the name of the interface without the secondary IP.
    Then put the commands for failover and stateful link, the stateful link will copy the connections table (among other things) to avoid downtime while passing from One unit to another, This link should have at least the same speed as the regular data interfaces.
    You can configure the failover link and the stateful link in just one interface, by just using the same name for the link, remember that this link will have a totally sepparate subnet from the ones already used in firewall.
    This is the configuration
    failover lan unit primary
    failover lan interface failover gig0/3
    failover link failover gig0/3
    failover interface ip failover 10.1.0.1 255.255.255.0 standby 10.1.0.2
    failover lan unit secondary
    failover lan interface failover gig0/3
    failover link failover gig0/3
    failover interface ip failover 10.1.0.1 255.255.255.0 standby 10.1.0.2
    Make sure that you can ping each other secondary/primary IP and then put the command
    failover first on the primary and then on the secondary.
    That would fine.
    Let me know if you have further doubts.

  • Cisco ASA Active standby failover problem

    We have configured ASA Active standby failover with ASA5505 . When primary unit power off, secondary unit became active. when primary unit power on, then primary unit is becoming active again. i think for active standby setup there is no preemption. The real issue is when primary ASA became active after power on all the external connectivity getting down. Please see the below config,

  • What is best conection  string for application to connect to active standby

    I have setup a primary db and an active standby database on two servers in different city.
    Now for people to test it, what is the best tnsnames strings I should provide to them?
    Plus how do I test it?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello;
    What you are looking at Transparent Application Failover for Data Guard. ( Way cool idea if you decide to use it )
    Example
    ernie =
    (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST =
           (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Primary.server.com)(PORT = 1521))
           (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Standby.server.com)(PORT = 1521))
           (CONNECT_DATA =
           (SERVICE_NAME = ernie)
    )The DBMS_SERVICE.CREATE_SERVICE will let create an alias for database which can be used on both servers so the end user never sees a failover.
    The rough outline is
    1. Create the service
    BEGIN
       DBMS_SERVICE.CREATE_SERVICE('ernie','ernie');
    END;
    /2. Start the service
    BEGIN
       DBMS_SERVICE.START_SERVICE('ernie');
    END;
    /3. default parameters can now be set for 'ernie'.
    BEGIN
       DBMS_SERVICE.MODIFY_SERVICE
       ('ernie',
       FAILOVER_METHOD => 'BASIC',
       FAILOVER_TYPE => 'SELECT',
       FAILOVER_RETRIES => 200,
       FAILOVER_DELAY => 1);
    END;
    /4. Finally a database STARTUP trigger should be created to ensures that this service is only offered if the database is primary.
    CREATE TRIGGER CHECK_ERNIE_START AFTER STARTUP ON DATABASE
    DECLARE
    V_ROLE VARCHAR(30);
    BEGIN
    SELECT DATABASE_ROLE INTO V_ROLE FROM V$DATABASE;
    IF V_ROLE = 'PRIMARY' THEN
    DBMS_SERVICE.START_SERVICE('ernie');
    ELSE
    DBMS_SERVICE.STOP_SERVICE('ernie');
    END IF;
    END;

    is this config cause this problem?

    Hello,
    1, You can use the management interface for Failover, is it not that recomended.
    Also failover can't be configure on shared physical intefaces.
    You can do it with subinterfaces but with a dedicated phisical interface
    For you to use this you need the command:
    no management-only
    to set it up as a normal interface and setup the failover link/state on it.
    2, The Primary unit will replicate the configuration to the secondary unit, all changes should be made on the primary unit.
    Every change you make on the secondary will not replicate to primary and everytime you save configuration on the primary will replicate to secondary.
    This been said,
    interface Ethernet0/2.903

    security-level 75
    ip address 10.0.93.1 255.255.255.0 standby 10.0.93.2 interface Ethernet0/2
    this will replicate to secondary and create:
    interface Ethernet0/2.903
    vlan 903
    nameif inside2
    security-level 75
    and will only take:
    ip address 10.0.93.1 255.255.255.0 standby 10.0.93.2 not the part
    interface Ethernet0/2.
    Let me know if you have any other questions.
    Regards.

  • BACKUP LOG suddenly failed with Msg 35250, Level 16, State 11 The connection to the primary replica is not active. The command cannot be processed.

    I have AlwaysOn SQL 2012 Enterprise set-up using Windows Failover Clustering Services (not FCI), and have 1 Primary node (P), 1 Synchronous Commit Auto Failover (SC), and 1 Asynchronous Commit Manual Failover (AC) node.  It is set up to prefer secondary,
    with the highest priority given to AC node.
    I am using Ola Hollengren's scripts for Database Maintenance jobs, including a native BACKUP LOG job for the transaction logs of all user databases on a 1 minute schedule.  His scripts already consider AlwaysOn, and although the job is set-up on all
    3 nodes, only ever runs on AC node.
    The job has been running successfully since initial set-up almost 1 year ago, but suddenly yesterday morning started to fail with the following error, only on 1 of the 13 databases in my availability group:
    Date and time: 2014-06-08 09:36:11
    Command: BACKUP LOG [my_db] TO DISK = N'E:\MSSQL\\Transaction Dumps\my_db\MySQLCL$MySQLAG_my_db_20140608_093610_U_LOG.trn' WITH CHECKSUM, COMPRESSION
    Msg 35250, Level 16, State 11, Server AC, Line 1
    The connection to the primary replica is not active.  The command cannot be processed.
    Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Server AC, Line 1
    BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.
    Outcome: Failed
    Duration: 00:01:00
    The other 12 databases continued to backup successfully.
    Checking the Availability Group dashboard, windows event logs, and SQL Server error logs, including Failover Cluster events showed no issues.
    However, monitoring software (Idera SQLdm) showed blocked sessions on P node.  When I ran sp_who2, it showed that a background process was being blocked by another background process with an HADR BACKUP LOCK.
    Since both processes were background processes, I was unable to kill either process.  I temporarily disabled the transaction log backup job, but the blocked process was still active.
    I ran DBCC CHECKDB (my_db) WITH all_errormsgs, no_infomsgs, data_purity on both P and AC nodes, with no errors.  However, on AC node, it also showed 1 transaction rolled forward and 0 transactions rolled back.  This also had the effect of releasing
    the blocked background process, but another background process was now blocking with the same HADR BACKUP LOCK.
    I tried to restart SQL Server Agent on AC node, which did not immediately seem to work.  However, after a few minutes, I noticed that the block had disappeared.  I re-enabled the transaction log backup job on AC and it started working normally
    again.  The error has not occurred again, but I am at a loss as to what happened, and how to prevent it from happening again.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Diane

  • Active/Standby failover automatic primary active

    I have 2 ASAs 5510 with same physical configuration and running ok with active/standby failover mode. Like we have PREEMPT command in active/active failover to get back primary active after its been rebooted from failed mode. This command makes primary back to active and makes secondary firewall standby automatically.
    Need help to know any such command for active/standby failover for automatic primary active. Currently we have to use command FAILOVER ACTIVE on primary to make it active manually.

    Remember, failover in ASA works differently than HSRP. ASA does NOT use
    HSRP. Furthermore, there is NO HSRP ip address in ASA either. You are
    talking about two different technologies.
    Think of it this way. HSRP technology works very similar to VRRP and
    Juniper NSRP. All of these technologies use virtual IP address. If you
    have two devices, you will have an Virtual IP address, in addition
    to the physical ip addresses of the two devices. ASA does not use the
    extra VIP.

  • Admin TACACS+ access fails ASA in Active/Standby Configuration

    We have two ASA 5510 with version 8.2(1) in Active/Standby configuration, the failover works fine, but when the primary ASA comes back it remains standby , so we manually change it to active with the failover active command, then we try to access the device using a TACACS+ account , it doesnt work , just the local account works; after a period of time (15min) , the TACACS+ access start to work.

    I'm not sure about your configuration but when in timed mode, a server that is declared "failed" will once again
    be made available after 30 seconds. Unlike reactivation mode, it is not
    necessary for all of the servers to fail before any can be reactivated.
    On possible source of confusion to be aware of in timed mode:
    The "show aaa-server" command will continue to show the server as FAILED
    until the server is needed to authenticate a connection.
    depletion
    Reactivates failed servers only after all of the servers in the group are inactive.
    timed
    Reactivates failed servers after 30 seconds of down time.
    Please tweak reactivation mode.

  • Reboot ASA 8.4 (asdm 6.4) Active/Standby pair

    Hi,
    I manage a pair of ASAs (8.4 asdm 6.4) and am having trouble with traffic going thru a tunnel.  It was recommended to me that perhaps a reboot is in order.  I found the instructions at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa84/configuration/guide/admin_swconfig.html#wp1355970 (which I followed without actually upgrading the IOS, as all I wanted was both devices to reboot - one at at time without causing connection resets) but when I attempted it, the device that rebooted was always the same IP.  My question is at step  3 "when standby unit has finished reloading and is in the Standby Ready state, force the active unit to fail over to the standby unit by entering the following command on the active unit.
    active# no failover active
    But there is a note "Use show failover command to verify that the standby unit is in the standby ready state"  which I did.
    This is the result of show failover from the 0.5 (primary) unit BEFORE issuing no failover active:

      Thinking all was well, I now issued (from the same 172.16.0.5 unit) the reload command.  Unfortunately my continuous pings to .0.5 and .0.6 show that 0.6 rebooted AGAIN!?!
    Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks,

    I guessed that might be the case, but am still unsure.  The IP I was pinging was the inside LAN interface (Eth
    LAN failover is configured using Eth0/0 (IPs 10.0.254.253 and .254)  and State Failover with Eth0/1 (IPs 10.0.253.253 and .254) "Inside" is Gig1/1 with IP 172.16.0.5 (and .6 on the second unit) I would have expected either the LAN failover or the State failover IPs to change but not the LAN interface.  But perhaps I've got it backwards.  Thanks for your response. • About stateful active/standby failover

    Hello guys.
    I have two ASA's, same model and hardware. Asa have configured stateful active/standby failover by someone, few years ago. It was working normally until recently and no one have changed this configuration. Then Secondary unit is failed. Ping between 2 interfaces is ok. Please help me to resolve this problem.

  • Active-Standby -Client-Site VPN

    Dear Experts.
    We have Cisco two ASA 5550 which is configured in Active-Standby mode but client-site VPN is not working when secondary unit becomes active. Failover status is showing as " Secondary Active" when primary unit is active all client-site VPN connections are working fine. Both ASA's has 7.2(3) IOS image and DES, 3DES/AES license enables.
    We are getting following error messages
    IPSEC: Deleted outbound permit rule, SPI 0xBFA351A9
    Rule ID: 0x059C3060
    IPSEC: Deleted outbound VPN context, SPI 0xBFA351A9

    Please advise

    One of the things that I have seen that can cause symptoms like this is to not have some files in flash of the backup ASA. In particular I suggest that you check for files related to the client VPN. So get the output of show flash from the primary ASA and from the backup ASA and compare them.

  • Failover active/standby

    Hello. There are two Cisco devices: asa5512 and asa5510. Tell me whether it is possible to organize a failover active / standby using these devices. If this is not possible, tell me if there are any other possibilities for automatic backup.

    If by Backup , you mean hardware Redundancy , it would not be possible.
    You can run the same configuration on both the devices and if one fails , you can manually replace it with the other one.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • Can ASA5500 and ASA5500-X be paired as active standby?

    Hi, looking at several migration scenarios at a customer, is it possible to have a 5512-X as primary firewall, with a 5510 as secondary in an active standby cluster (running the same license type)?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    No, you cannot pair ASA firewall that are of different model
    Hardware Requirements
    The two units in a failover configuration must be the same model, have  the same number and types of interfaces, the same SSMs installed (if  any), and the same RAM installed.
    If you are using units with different flash memory sizes in your  failover configuration, make sure the unit with the smaller flash memory  has enough space to accommodate the software image files and the  configuration files. If it does not, configuration synchronization from  the unit with the larger flash memory to the unit with the smaller flash  memory will fail.

  • ASA Failover pair Active/Standby

    Hi,
    Two days ago I had a problem with secondary unit in the ASA HA. The problem is because of the CX module failed in the secondary unit (service module failed) showing the standby unit failed in the "show fail" output.
    Just I reloaded CX module in the secondary unit and then it was working fine.
    Now the same problem facing in Active unit. Kindly find the show fail output below. we are running ASA 5.1(5) in ASA and 9.3.2.1 system image in CX module.

    Hi,
    Thank you for opening a separate thread. This seems to be the issue with the DATA plane going down on the CX module and causing the fail-over event.
    Were there any configuration / updates etc done on the CX which caused this ?
    I think this might require some diagnostics log analysis on the CX and so i would request you to open a Cisco TAC case.
    If you want you can send the diagnostic from the CX to my email address and i can check the issue if possible. ([email protected])
    Thanks and Regards,
