Report on next effective maintenance window

Hi all
I'm having a problem with this custom function/report posted on TechNet while back for ConfigMgr 2007
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/7870.sccm-2007-create-report-of-upcoming-maintenance-windows-by-client.aspx
I've made the needed changes according to this blog post:
https://sccmfaq.wordpress.com/2013/08/22/sccm-2012-show-next-effective-maintenance-window/
..but when using maintenance windows that occurs for example 1st tuesday of every 1 months, the function returns the date week ahead. For example now (on 26th of Feb) next maintenance window should be on Tuesday March 3rd, but instead the report is showing
Tuesday March 10th.
Any help on modifying the function would be appreciated, I saw that there comments on the original post about the recurrence type 4 (monthly by weekday as noted here https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc143300.aspx) not working correctly in the function.
Ideal solution for me would be that the clients report their next maintenance windows through hardware inventory, but I don't think that's possible.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi,
I recommend you post this question in SQL forum as modifying the function is very complicated.

  • Windows Media Player keeping Automatic Maintenance window/Windows Updates from doing auto-restart

I have a system that is connected to a domain, and it runs a video playlist in Windows Media Player for digital signage upon bootup (and auto-login).  WMP is set to loop the videos over and over again, but it also is preventing automatic updates from
installing and/or auto-restarting at 3:00AM in the morning (and yes, the system power management is set to keep the computer on all the time).
    How can I fix this?
I have a GPO set up to install updates and restart automatically (option 4).  I tried the GPO option to use the Windows 8 maintenance window to install updates, and also tried turning that option off and just using a 3:00AM restart period.  Neither
option seems to work, so it looks like Windows Media Player is preventing an auto-restart to finish the update installation.  Is there any way around this, so that Windows Media Player doesn't stop Windows Updates from doing its job?  I don't care
if that means the video stops playing because it just starts up again on the next bootup.
I looked at the WMP GPO's and the only option that sounds like it's related is the option to turn on or off the auto-updating of media info for WMP, but it has nothing to do with what I'm trying to accomplish.  If I missed something, let me know.
If there is some other way to accomplish this, such as associating and launching the playlist file with the Xbox Videos app, I would be fine with that, but I need it to loop the playlist continually (I also use the Shuffle option
in WMP - ***see note below for another question).  I still want the system to automatically install updates and reboot on a regular schedule despite the video playing in the foreground.
***Side question: is there any way to turn Repeat and Shuffle options on in WMP without having to load the GUI (for scripting a playlist)?
Just FYI: this system is actually using Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise (from a MAPS account), but it isn't customized aside from not having the standard WinRT apps from a stock Win 8.1 install loaded - it is a stock install from the ISO.
From what I understand, it is the same as Windows 8.1 Enterprise, except that it is only licensed to be used as an "appliance" machine for a single role - which it is.  So I'm assuming that there are no actual differences from a "regular"
Windows 8.1 SKU that would cause this issue.  If I am completely mistaken about this, please notify me on it.  The reason I'm making this statement is in case there are any differences in Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise that I am not aware of.
Otherwise, I welcome any assistance that would target a "regular" version of 8.1 Enterprise.  NOTE:  Someone said to post this into the Windows Embedded forum, but the only one that exists is the one for POSready - and this is HARDLY the
POSready version of Windows Embedded that I'm using.

    Hi,
Did you use the policy Local Computer Policy\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update\Always automatically restart at the scheduled time?
I noticed an description "restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations" policy is enabled, then this policy has no effect." it means if system installed some updates which unneeds restart computer, this policy would has no effect.
In my opinion, your problem should not caused by WMP setting. please check your installed updates whether they need restart computer.
In addition, Power Managment in Control Panel also can prevent the schedule task running.
    Control Panel\System and Security\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings\Change advanced power settings\Sleep\Allow wake timers
Please make sure this option is enable.

Is there a log I can look at to see if a user clicked the restart button from the pop on the server or is this supposed to happen? I am assuming its not but I've never seen this before.
    Matt

Changing the maintenance window(s) like anything else on the server is not immediately effective on the client. The client needs to first know about the change/update before it can act upon it and this only happens when the client updates its machine policy
which by default happens every 60 minutes.
Thus, unless the client's machine policy refresh interval happen to be in that very small timeframe between you changing it on the server and the time for it to download, the client did what it was supposed to do.

  • Application (WMF 3.0) won't install during maintenance window, but will install when there is no maintenance window

    Hi All,
I'm just getting into the Application model in SCCM 2012 R2 and I like what I see so far, but i'm running into an issue.  When i set up an Application for WMF 3.0 with a prerequisite of .Net 4.0 and deploy it to a set of test systems that do not have
any maintenance windows applied to it, it works great.  If it doesn't have .Net 4.0 it installs both that and WMF 3.0 and reboots.  If it already has .Net 4.0, it will skip that and just install WMF 3.0 and reboot.
However, if i deploy it to systems that have a maintenance window applied, the application recognizes that it needs .Net and WMF 3.0 or just WMF 3.0, but it never actually runs.
Here is the applicable entry from the appintenteval.log, and i've bolded the line where it shows that WMF 3.0 is not installed

Thanks.  I checked that setting and i have it set to false, so i don't think that's it.
I've done a little more experimenting.  I've changed my maintenance window back to 30 minutes.  Prior to the MW opening, i'll run an application evaluation deployment cycle on the system.  It will show the system as required WMF 3.0 but since
the MW isn't open, it won't install at the time.
When the MW opens, i'll watch the ServiceWindowManager.log and it sees that it's a 30 minute MW and that the run time is 15 minutes but it still says the program can't run:
    ActiveServiceWindow has 1800 seconds left    ServiceWindowManager    4/24/2014 2:20:00 PM    2032 (0x07F0)

If however, i kick off another application evaluation deployment cycle on the system during the open MW, the deployment kicks off right away and finishes.

Program can run! Setting *canProgramRun to TRUE    ServiceWindowManager    4/24/2014 2:23:49 PM    816 (0x0330)
This is not the behavior i would expect.  I would think that if the client knows it has a pending application deployment that is required, when the MW opened up, it would start the install immediately or close to the beginning of the MW.  It shouldn't
need to have an application evaluation deployment cycle kicked off during the MW.

    Log Message:
Fix for a bug: After playing a hide effect, a window wouldn't be visible again.
The issue here is that all effects that occur because of HIDE end up calling setVisible() (see EffectManager.effectEndHandler).  Window/WindowedApplication was basically left with two concepts of setVisible...the displayObject one and the native application one, and they were out of synch.  So setting visible=true on the window wasn?\226?\128?\153t calling setVisible(true) which controls the display object visibility.  Now instead of doing our work in the visible setter, we override setVisible() and do it in there.

I run Suse 9.1 Linux, and Suse has a package called lmsensors which by default on my machine gives readings like this:
    Code: [Select]
    temp1:       +27°C  (high =    +0°C, hyst =   +22°C)   sensor = thermistor
    temp2:     +41.0°C  (high =   +80°C, hyst =   +75°C)   sensor = PII/Celeron diode
Now that 41C is pretty high for an idle AMD643000+ running at 1000Mhz, 1.08V. Too high, I would say. temp 1 in this case is the SYS temp, temp2 is the CPU temp.
Now, using lmsensors I can duplicate your little trick and tell it that temp 2 is in fact a 3904 transistor. Having done this can I get readings like this:
    Code: [Select]
    temp1:       +27°C  (high =    +0°C, hyst =   +22°C)   sensor = thermistor
    temp2:     +16.0°C  (high =   +80°C, hyst =   +75°C)   sensor = 3904 transistor
Problem is, I'm not sure that the sensor is actually a 3904 transistor! The number's lower, but I was pretty sure that the sensor in the AMD64 is in fact a diode. Also, surely the CPU temp can't actually be that much lower than the SYS temp.
So, I think your fix succeeds in giving lower temps and that's great in that it will tell your system software that the CPU is not overheating, but I don't think it's the solution to high temp reporting. Anyway, as you say, its a solution for people who can't run with system shutdowns due to bogus high temps.
I've been looking at these temp issues with the MSI K8T, and I was thinking the problem was simply a miscalibration. The Winbond sensor chip on my board (maybe the K8N is the same, maybe not) has a sensor temp offset that gets added to the temp coming from the sensor. On the K8T this number is +54C.   Funny number I know, but I've "fixed" the problem while I wait for a real bios fix on the K8T by simply reducing this offset to give me a CPU temp that matches SYS temp when idle. This enables cool'n'quiet fan control to work properly on my system, which is my main practical concern.

  • Multiple Deployments During Single Maintenance Window

I have a maintenance window that runs from 10PM to 4AM daily. I have three deployments with deadlines during that time. I'm also using the default restart times of 90 minutes and then 15. One of them runs at 11PM, the next at 1AM, and the last at 3AM. Two
    are software updates.
So if the first runs at 11PM and the updates install (they had already downloaded prior to the deadline) successfully. They each have a max runtime of 5 minutes. Now a user is still logged in from earlier that day. The 90 minute restart countdown starts.
Will the second deployment still run at 1AM if the first one hasn't completed its restart yet?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it will need the restart first.

  • Deadline VS Maintenance Window

I have configured the device collection for maintenance at 12am-6am everyday.I recently deployed windows update as required and deadline at 5pm. My understanding is that after 5pm, the update will wait till the next maintenance windows before it's installed.
However, the updates keeps installing at 5pm or whatever deadline i configure.
Am i having a wrong assumption or is my SCCM not configured correctly?

That is proper assumption only if under User Experience tab on software deployment you have
not selected any check boxes under Deadline behavior.

  • Maintenance Windows - Start Date

Hi. I'm setting up some maintenance windows for a quarterly patching activity - but I'm a bit confused about exactly how that works.
I want to set the recurrence pattern for every 3 months - and for the 3rd Saturday of each month. No problem.
But I don't understand how to use the 'effective Date' setting and how this affects when the first one will be?
So - for instance - if i want to have the first window in my quarterly schedule to be the 3rd Saturday in October - what do i set the effective date to be? The 18th October? Or something else?

The effective date is when the MW will become effective from on that collection. So if you take a look at the image below I have set the MW to become effective from today but the MW will be open from 01:00 - 04:00 on the 3rd Sat every 3 months for Software
    Updates only.
    Cheers

  • SCCM fails to deploy Patches to client with in the maintenance windows.

    Hi,
I am new to Patchng through SCCM just 7 months of experience.
I deploy the patches regular month basis as microsoft release the patches every month. till now the patch deployment was happening smoothly, but from last month i am facing issue like the SCCM failed to push the patches with in the provided maintenance window.
even if the maintenance window over client will not get install.
i have checked the enforcement status report for the same collection which i deployed, the status is always downloading updtaes.
We have collection called Workstation and servers, both the collections compliance is less like 20% or lesser than that.
Arround 800 Workstations deployed and given deadline 10 days. with suppressed reboot.
Arround 70 Servers deployed with with automatic reboot via Maintenance window.
deadline to install is 1 hour ahead of maintenance window.
It would be great if any one suggest the solution to make software update deployment through SCCM  with in the maintenance window.

Vista is not a supported OS for Acrobat XI Pro.

  • Maintenance Windows and Installation Deadline

I know this has been discussed many times in the past, but I wanted to clarify in my mind what I think happens.
I have a maintenance window on a collection that is daily between 3:30am and 5:30am.  I create a deployment for software updates with an available time at 2:00am.  I specify the installation deadline in the deployment for 3:00am.
In the Deadline behavior (user experience) I do not have either option checked (Software updates installation and System restart). So, my MW will not be ignored.
With these settings, the needed updates will be downloaded, but not installed until the start of the maintenance window at 3:30am. (in essence, the deadline should be "before" the MW if I want them to install at the next MW).
    Thanks!

  • Software Updates, Tray Pop-ups and Maintenance Windows

I will try to keep it to the point.
End Users in Europe power down their machines every night. Patch Tuesday rolls around, we set the deadline to patch for one week
later (the following Tuesday) @ 10pm.
So they come in that following Wednesday morning, power on their system and bam, software updates are installed and reboots are forced right
there in their earlier AM which is upsetting them.
Our settings? Deployment is required, detail level is “only success and error messages”, “Display in Software Center and show all notifications”, and when the installation
deadline is reached allow the following activities to be performed outside the maintenance window: “Software Update Installation” and “System Restart”.
So before I get a whole bunch of, “disable reboots” or “notify your users” or “use WOL”. I want to discuss this on another angle.
We are getting reports that users are not seeing the notifications. As you can see it is set to all notifications. Likely they are happening and they are not seeing
    them.
Main Question: Is there a way via a registry tweak or client setting that will do one of the following:
Make the tray popups more frequent
Make the tray popups last longer
Bring the main “hey things to patch screen” come up without clicking the tray popup
Anything we can do to make the notification BEFORE the deadline more in their faces would be ideal. Anyone?

This happened because patch updates reached deadline and installed forcefully and restart the machines. from
the software center and system tray. Just configure that in the deployment
Unless the site wide hide deployments option is selected,
you will get icons in the system tray. When that is selected, you do NOT get icons at all. If this is enabled, but you suppress the deployment itself, then you get the icons but not balloons.

  • SCCM 2012: Child collections with Maintenance Windows

    Hello
after searching and reading many posts about maintenance window, I've realised, I have to ask my own question:
Assume a parent software update collection and an ADR, deployed on it. Every one of the child collections (included by Membership rule: include collections) has an own Maintenance Window.
Question: what exactly happens on the Dead Line, configured in ADR?
I suppose, the selected updates will be deployed to the child collections, but download, installation and reboot will occure only during the configured Maintenance Window on the child collection. The software updates will be listed in Software Center of
the server, which is member of this collection, the status will be "past due - will be installed" or somethig of this kind, the download status will be shown as 0%.
    Am I right?
Questions Background: we have a large infrastructure with more than 1500 servers, devided in 11 pools (software update collections) with 11 different maintenance windows. So, I will create only one ADR, which will be deployed to the parent software
update collection, or "wrapper collection". I hpe, the configured maintenace windows of the child collections will remain active.
    Thanks for your feedback.
    Kind regards: P. trifonov

Yes you are right. the SU will get installed at the next available MW, no matter which collection that MW belongs too.
