Reporting tool database structure
I am about to create a business intelligence tool, but I don't know how to store the created reports. I want some reports in which I have determined which tables and fields should be printed with the correct JOINS.
Perhaps I shouldn't make it any more difficult than storing the SQL for each report. It will just make difficult to edit the report. I thought there were a smart way the most tools used.
Does anyone have any experience in such tools?
You can create a bunch of custom reports and add them in as XML extensions.
Take a look at Jeffs pages for some decent report examples. Heres one example: http://www.thatjeffsmith.com/archive/2012/01/sweet-child-report-o-mine/
Then, you can export them out to XML and register them in the preferences under PRefs > Database > XML Extensions.
Restart SQLDev and you'll be able to see the reports in the report navigator under shared reports.

Database structure documentation tool
I have been asked to include the database structure of our application in the help. It doesn't look as though there is a tool within RH that will do this but I thought it was worth asking in case it's hidden away somewhere.
If not, there are plenty of tools out there that will do the job but are there any that will integrate best with my RH7 chm and webhelp output?
ThanksHi there
No, there really isn't a tool in RoboHelp that will facilitate that. If you try a different tool you might ensure it outputs HTML files. You would then import the HTML files into a RoboHelp project.

Using AE(htmldb 2.0) as for reporting tool for other oracle databases.
Maybe I was mistaken, but when I first saw the HTMLDB demo's I saw this as a slick way to build a browser based reporting tool for the masses for quasi-ad-hoc reporting on some of our larger databases that currently have limited reporting capability, and also as a possible replacement for the many MSAccess applets we have.
I just got 2.0 installed and working on a 9i database and went through the basic tutorials, but I can't find much info on how to connect to other oracle databases.
Are my options as follows?:
create dblinks from the local database that houses htmldb to all the other databases?
or
install htmldb schemas on each database I want to access from htmldb?
or
I'll keep looking, but if any of you have any pointers or know of a tutorial that explains the best way to do this it would be greatly appreciated!
tiaAs for question 1, yep, that's what I mean. Example:
In a schema in the App Express instance, create a user called "APP1_USER", and then
create view app1_user.people as select * from people@link_user@remotedb
As for the next question, using the built-in insert/update/delete processes will give you
ORA-01461: can bind a LONG value only for insert into a LONG column
among other errors. Apparently version 2.1 will fix this. See Cannot Update VARCHAR column in Remote DB
We address this problem by creating pl/sql APIs for DML, and then writing our own insert/update processes. Slows us down a little, but even with that, App Express remains a productive choice for us.
Another weird problem: auto-row fetch (built-in to HTML DB) doesn't work over db links when you have two columns for a primary key. Many ways around this, e.g. create sequence-populated primary key, create a view with single column that concatenates primary key column values (key1|key2)
Hope this helps!

Use same report with same database structure to different database server.
Hi,
I have standard crystal reports which needs to be copied to another database server.
The origin database has exactly same database structure with the data base in other server.
My only question is how to change the connection of the crystal report file from old database server to new one without affecting the linked tables in the report. Would it be possible?
Note: origin database and new database has same structure, tables and columns but differ in data on it. and both has different server. (MS SQL)
Thanks,Hi Mark,
Open the report in the CR Designer > select Database option on the top > select Set Datasource location.
The pane on the top shows the current connection. Go ahead and create a new connection to the target database from the pane at the bottom. Once created, highlight one table from the top, highlight the corresponding table from the bottom pane and click Update. Do this for each table.

Database structure changed. Mapping Crystal reports to new datasource
There are several crystal reports that need to be remapped to a new database we have in place. The data structure has quite changed. I started using the 'Set datasource Location' option to map the new database fields to existing fields in the report. The problem shows up when trying to map fields from multiple tables to existing fields in the report from a single table. To elaborate, the old database structure has only one table used for a report and the new database structure has these same fileds coming from two different tables. The 'Set datasource Location' option is leting me map the existing table used in the report to only one report. Is this how this functionality works or am I missing something. Please advise the best way to do this mapping.
VJhi VJ,
when you're dealing with reports where the data source can change along with the number of tables or the table names or the field names etc. then this is a method that you can design with to avoid issues associated with datasource changes.
you can also change existing reports to use this formula only method but of course there's a bit of work involved in changing reports vs. designing them like this from the ground up.

Generic ad-Hoc report tool like Database Browser
1) Are there any plans for making the Database Browser functionality in the SQL Workshop reusable in HTML DB applications? I am in the very beginning stages of building a generic ad-hoc report page in HTML DB. What I mean by this is the user can select a table from a restricted list of tables, select columns from that table, and execute the query. This is all I have working at this point. I will add other features obviously like WHERE clause criteria, results ordering, column ordering, and saving query in database for future use. I was wondering if this could be accomplished by utilizing the Application Builder's Database Browser without having to give the users developer access, all but the saving the query to the database of course.
2) Has anyone else built a generic ad-hoc query type tool in HTML DB? If so, what type of functionality did you implement or not implement? I am also interested in what measures had to be taken to prevent SQL Injection.
3) Is there much interest out there for an HTML DB ad-hoc query report tool that could be incorporated into an HTML DB application?Hi Scott,
There's definately interest. I have 30 data tables (and 17 lookups), and the users will need the ability to query any column in any (data) table, and maintain the parent-child relationships to build up all of the where clauses.
I've downloaded you QBE and Quick QBE, and have a couple questions/comments/problems.
With QBE, I try to add it with the Upload Script feature, and it keeps dying on me with "Error: ORA-20000: Unable to get the block of code: ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small" message.
With Quick QBE, in the readme.txt file, under "Definition of Each File", you refer to code.sql and quick_qbe.sql. Under "Order of Execution", you refer you code.sql and people.sql. And then in the zip file, you have ddl.sql and quick_qbe.sql. It gets a little confusing. :^)
Anyway, thanks.

Reporting and Report tools for CCM
Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me some suggestions on reporting in CCM. To be a little more specific; for example if a few users complain they are tryin to make outbound calls, and getting a busy signal, is there any reporting tool that I can use to pinpoint the problem or eventually be able to say, hey we need another phone line, etc...
Also. User calls can complains that the calls they are making lack in quality, how do I report on this or research? In order to determine if there are any records in the Structured Query Language (SQL) database, complete these steps:
Choose Start > Programs > SQL > Enterprise Manager > Microsoft SQL Servers > SQL Server Group.
Choose Publisher Server > Databases.
Choose CDR > Tables. Right-click the CallDetailRecord table.
Choose Open Table > Return All Rows. Determine if there are any records.
If many records appear, complete this procedure to remove records from ART:
Choose Programs > SQL Server > Query Analyzer. Log in and choose ART database.
Run these queries:
delete from Tbl_Load_History
delete from Tbl_Dump_PkID
delete from Tbl_Error_Id_Map
delete from Tbl_Billing_Data
delete from Tbl_Billing_Error
delete from Tbl_Dump_CallDetailRecord
delete from Tbl_Dump_CallDetailRecordDiagnostic
This forces ART to get all the old CDRs into ART in the next scheduled loading time. By default, CDR data is loaded every day from midnight to 5 a.m.
Restart the CDR Insert and DBL Monitor Services from CCM Administration > Application >Cisco CCM Serviceability >Tools > Control Center.
Refer to the How can I manually purge the ART database? section of CallManager Issue Resolution with CDR and ART FAQ for more information.
Note: Information deletes from the ART database but not from the CDR.
Note: If you do not see any records, there are no CDR entries for that time and date range. Determine if conditions are met for CDR generation. CDR records are generated in these circumstances:
The service parameters CdrEnabled and CallDiagnosticsEnabled are set to True.
The call is established and has a talk duration greater than 0.
The call fails and has a cause code that reflects the error.
In order to set the service parameters, choose Service > Service Parameters, and make sure that the service parameters CdrEnabled and CallDiagnosticsEnabled are set to True in all of the Cisco CallManager servers, both publisher and subscriber. -
Hi,
Could some one point in the right direction - we are trying to finalize the reporting tool.
We have worked with BI-Publisher(not as dynamic) and Discoverer(formatting a big issue) - trying to find a tool that would overcome the limitations that these 2 tools have.
We want to be able to use Oracle Db, VPD, set client_id using OPD.Net, integrate with web application as key requirements. By same token would like to be able to create dynamic reports which allows a great deal of flexibility. Is there such a reporting tool?
Any ideas much appreciated.
Thanks!Hi
I'll try and answer your questions.
1. Xml, Sql(either a view or stored proc) as input
data sourceYou can base an Apex report on a view or mod/plsql procedure, or use xmldb.
2. support odp.net providerAs I understand it odp.net is a tool used by .net to access Oracle. Apex is a database tool so all the data and code, everything is in the database.
3. Work with VPD - virtual private database Yes.
4. single-sign-on, and setting client_identifier on
connection.Yes
5. Integrate with existing web application(asp.net
2.0)Not sure what integration you want.
6. This tool is free right, to be used with Oracle
10g database.Free and can be used with 10g or 9i databases.

BW (BEx) and BOBJ Reporting-Tools
Hi All,
I'm looking for an article or anything, that describes the difference between SAP BW (BEx) and Business Objects- Reporting tools .
which tools is suitable for what purpose?
thanks
bradThis isn't mine - it may even be yours - but just in case anyone looks at this thread, here it is
BO vs BEx
Ease of use:
BO - Very user friendly interface, Minimal requirement for MDX code, Some queries take more time in BO analysis, when compared to BEx Analyzer
BEx - Difficult self service reporting and analytics, Being Excel based, it needs extensive VBA or Macro programming for a great UI
Features:
BO - Export functionality (PDF, MSOffice etc), More chart types, Has more advanced features, Design and Preview Tab in the same page, Provides offline capabilities
BEx - Is mostly for SAP only but With integration can access BEx query from BO, Web App Designer is effort intensive, Build and preview are separate views
Support from SAP:
BO - Part of SAP integration roadmap, All current and future dev. in the BI front-end is focused on the SAP BO BI solutions, Crystal Reports is now main reporting tool, replacing BEx Report Designer
BEx - BEx is no longer the strategic direction, BEx product line will be phased out completely by 2016
Compatibility with other data source:
BO - Able to merge data from various sources in the same report, Can connect to any Database, very flexible in design
BEx - Gets data from BI
Implementation effort and ownership cost:
BO - Longer deployment period compared to BEx, Additional server needed, May require additional components setup for BW, May need separate license for Business Objects Enterprise (BOE) platform, BO uses OLEDB for OLAP API via BEx query, may cause an overhead, BW Accelerator may be needed to improve query response time, scalability and visibility.
BEx - Only MS office and BEx client are needed for installation, BEx is bundled with NetWeaver -
RE: (forte-users) Reporting tools/components for ForteApplications?
Hi Robert,
A good place to start when it comes to reporting is Forte Consulting. They
have developed a tool called ReportKit, which is ActiveX integration with
Seagate Software's Crystal Reports tool. Crystal is not really a three-tier
tool (although, your Forte Consultant can probably set it up to mimic a
three-tier tool), but it is a quick, easy way to get quality reports from
your existing Forte applications. If you're interested, give your Forte
Sales Rep (or, better still, your Forte Regional Consulting Director) a
call. They can discuss pricing and scheduling. I've done several
integration projects with Crystal, and I highly recommend ReportKit for
small- to medium-sized reporting requirements. As for costs, I don't recall
how much CrystalReports runs, but I think there are developer licenses and
runtime licenses.
FYI, the actual integration of ReportKit is pretty quick. The more
time-consuming piece of any report tool integration is the design and
implementation of the reports to be used.
I hope this helps.

Subject: (forte-users) Reporting tools/components for Forte
Applications?
Hi all,
We are looking for what is currently in the marketplace to enhance the
reporting
capabilities of Forte. Ideally, we are looking for component libraries that
we
could import into our repository. Do these exist?
Currently, I have found six reporting tools that are out there. The
tools
are Actuate, Crystal Reports, Report Workshop from Indus Consultancy
Services, Brio Technologies (SQR) VisualBRIO, Visual CyberQuery from
Cyberscience Corp., and Beacon from Brahma Software Solutions FORTify
Components. Are there any others for Forte?
If anyone is currently using one of these Reporting Tools for Forte or
any
others, could you give me any indications as to the costs, training, type
of
application using the Reporting tool, would you recommend using the
product
again, does it use wrappering or API, or is it a component based tool, and
any
other relevant information on the product?
Thanks,

Note: We are currently developing in Forte 3.0.L.2. However, we would
like
to select a reporting tool/component within the next month. We are in the
initial phases of our next project, an application to be developed
in-house.
Probably will have two databases, one for real-time data and another one
for
archived data. Probably will need reporting functionality and capabilities
for
both real-time data and archived data.

I think, SUN is not al all interested in TOOL.If TOOL were just a language and had no market yet, you are probably
right. But, not only is TOOL the key to the Forte environment, but it has
an existing and profitable market. Sun still sells FORTRAN, after all, and
continues to put money into ADE development for all its language
products. The real kicker, though, is that I think iPlanet is very clear
that Fusion, now iIS, is a very key product for them. There may be those
who wish it were written in Java and who might lobby for doing a Java
version, but it was clear at the conference that the iPlanet management
recognize that Java just isn't up to the task at this point. It isn't as
if all the iPlanet tools are actually written in Java, after all.
They will only support them for as long as they need.Or, more likely, for as long as they make money.
Now, in response to Microsofts .NET stratagy. We have yet to see how
succesfull this will be, but I expect Microsoft to push this down the
throats of developers and companies quite succesfully.Like they did DCOM?

Is it possible to change selection screen of logical database structure?
I have to create a z report for a standard transaction FBL01N which is extracting data according to the vendor account number(LIFNR) at the selection screen. Now as per the requirement the system should extract details according to 'vendor name' keeping the same functionality.
But the standard program is using some logical database structure KDB and the include for the selection screen is DBKDFSEL.So can I modify the selection screen of this transaction replacing Vendor No with Vendor Name.Hi..

How to create a Desktop based reporting tool
Regarding the Rreporting tool . Here I am mentioning the key points of my requirement,
As a first step the user creates the table linking and Alias naming.
Need a GUI kind of reporting tool, Where the user can drag and drop the tables, In that he can build the relations among the tables (if any exists).. User should be given a provision to make alias names for tables and columns. Then saves his report
In the second step user can check his saved report and select the columns . Based on the selected columns a query should be populated automatically with all the selected columns and where clauses based on the links/joins with the user given alias names (if any). Based on this the report should be generated..
I know there are many reporting calls like BIRT,Pentao. But the thing is when I am working or developing on these tools its design is fixed and file gets generated. which can viewed in that editor only.. (like .reportdesign, .report, .rptcustom)
Here please tell me which tool to use and how to start with.
Here the tool can be a desktop application or a war file. (This complete thing should be a GUI based)
--> It should connect to a database and show the list of tables ( or set of tables which are already stored in DB)
--> based on table selection we should display columns of that table
--> if multiple tables are there we should show relations between tables ( if any exists)
( the relations will be already stored in back-end tables, just we need to check any relation exist or not)
--> User should be a given a option to provide alias naming for tables and columns
--> User should save the complete set as a report (with alias names also if any provided by user)
--> when once we save the report we should provide a option to run the report and display the result. What have you coded so far?
If you are looking for someone to do it for you, then be aware: this is not a do my project for me service, but many of the people on here do consulting at 100+ USD per hour. Check one of your local services and I'm sure you can find a local deveoper to do your project for you. -
Using Report tool with Swing Application
I'd like to use a reporting tool (Crystal Reports or anything else) with Swing application. Could anyone help me?
You have to pass the values are parameters to the Oracle Reports report. Take a look at this: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/howtos/howto_integrate_oracle_reports.html
Also you can search this forum for "Oracle Reports"

Regarding: Oracle Reporting tool
hi all
is there any reporting tool in oracle for designing reports for my application. I have already tried reports with crystal report but it is too slow.
Thanks
Regards
SHi,
There are installation documents included in the APEX download itself, I really advise reading those documents since they cover everything you need to know about how to install it.
Also, there is a huge amount of information here -
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/index.html
including many HOWTO's, examples, whitepapers, documentation and guides that will give you information about what APEX is, how you to use it and what you can do with it.
Note, since you're looking for a Reporting tool, APEX might not be exactly what you need, however you can easily build reports using APEX, so as I said earlier it really depends on you actual requirements. -
Limitations of Discoverer compared to Other Reporting tools
Hi,
I need to evaluate the Pro's and Con's of Oracle Discoverer. Can u please tell me the advantages and disadvantages when compared to Business Objects, Cognos or any other Reporting Tool.
Thanks, PrasadHey Prasad.
Now there's an open question (ie: which is better, Ford or Chevy).
I'm sure this has been address on this forum before so you might want to perform a search for this subject.
However, dipping my toes in the pool ...
1. Oracle is pushing Discoverer as an important tool in their repertoire. Future versions will now interface with XML Publisher (now BI Publisher), etc. so it's tightly inter-woven into Oracle. BO, Cognos, etc. are 3rd. party tools and therefore not tightly woven.
2. If running Oracle Apps, then you can use the BIS views for pre-written views, Disco workbooks, etc. It's simply not practical to try to use BIS without Discoverer.
3. Newest version of Disco (10g r2) now supports OLAP. Badly ... but it's a start.
4. Oracle is really pushing the idea of everything being in the database and therefore they are pushing OLAP, DW stuff in the database along with your relational stuff. What this means in tools is that they're strongly pushing Disco with OLAP instead of a customer having to buy hardware, software (ie: Hyperion, Cognos, etc.), people (dbas to manage, software types to program), etc. and exporting your data from the Oracle database to a 3rd. party database to then report on. Again, Disco with OLAP (and someday if actual possible / practical) mixing your OLTP stuff with OLAP stuff.
5. It's been awhile since I used BO and Cognos so not sure if their newest versions have the same idea of 3 versions (well 2 someday) where you create the report with Plus (or Desktop) and allow users to lightly manipulate (but not create) existing reports using a simple HTML browser (Viewer).
6. Discoverer is a neat name as it sounds like you're stuttering ...
I'm sure they'll be lots of other reasons stated by others on this board, but if I was betting the farm on where to go, I would go with Discoverer if I had an Oracle installation. It'll cost you - and Oracle is definitely in it for making a buck or two - but if you're in for a penny with Oracle databases, etc., then you're in for a pound and using 3rd party tools that may do the same, less or even a bit more, never appeals to me as Oracle will either catch up and surpass them ... or let's be realistic ... buy them out! Like Microsoft, they've been doing that lately with a spare few billion dollars falling out of Larry's pockets.
