Research on folio download size

Has there been any research done on optimal sizes for folios (where people will most likely wait and not abandon the download)? We recently published a new folio that came in around 300MB and is currently getting a 50% abandon rate after the user intially starts to download it. This isn't including errors (so far no downolad errors have been reported). I know I've read somewhere that Wired magazine noticed a direct correlation between a small folio size and the number of users who complete downloading the folio. I'm just curious if we have a rough idea of where that magic number is. Thanks.

Yes, but it's quirky. Tap the gear icon in the library and choose "Remove Issues from iPad." The folio size of all the downloaded folios appears.

  • Overall Download Size Issues

Hi - we have a multi-folio DPS app that has gone live. New issues are released every year. We now have two folios released, each measuring in excess of 500 GB. This is somewhat unavoidable due to the required amount of content: Over 100 pages complete with multi-state objects, hundreds of photos, and dozens of interactive .oam files. I have two questions:
    • Are there any best practices on how best to reduce overall download size of a folio without sacrificing quality?
    • Is there a way to download just the newest folio in a DPS app instead of all the past issues as well? I wonder how, for example, a magazine like Esquire handles back issues while maintaining a manageable download size for its viewers.
Thanks in advance for any guidance and advice.

I assume you mean 500 MB.
The user can choose to download whatever folio he/she wants.
For smaller file sizes stick to single orientation PDF 1024x768 articles. Compress videos as much as possible and if you viewing in line scale them to the proper dimensions instead of scaling in InDesign. You might also consider streaming the video.

  • Photo Sharing - Download Size?

May I first say what a great upgrade this has been... I know from reading other comments that it hasn't been the same for everyone but it was very simple to get my site updated and be working apart from one thing... here is my problem.
I've made a load of photo pages by dragging photos out of the media inspector panel within iWeb 08 from images that are hi-res (2272 × 1704 pixels) within iPhoto 08. When I select the photos to be shared in the inspector panel (second button from left) I select "Photo Sharing - Download Size? - Original (Full Quality)... all good up to yet... I publish my site and when I go to the images online and download them they have been resized to 1920 x 1440 pixels.
    Why?

'Optimize photos' is enabled by default. I think is a good thing since my domain file was reduced in size after upgrade from 3.5GB to 1.6GB. But if you really want original images to publish then you need to turn off 'Optimize photos' in prefs and then add photos.
    Best,
    Scott

  • Photo Download Size

All photos were brought into the web page by using the iWeb "Media" button and navigating to the iPhoto library.
Then, in iWeb, I go to *Inspector > Photos*
Under "Photo Sharing," I set the Photo Download Size to "Original (Full Quality)."
Then, I test my web page. The downloads are roughly 400K. As a sanity check, I go to iPhoto and export. As expected, the sizes are roughly 4 Meg.
What am I doing wrong? What is it that I don't understand?

Actually, the issue is even worse. As I indicated in the first post, I'm unable to allow full-sized downloads. Further, for those photo pages where I do not wish to allow any downloads at all, I'm unable to turn off the downloading capability! I discussed these issues with an Apple tech and he duplicated my results. He's now investigating to determine if there is any workaround.

  • Strange download size of on calling packaged stored procedure in VB6

    Hi,
I tried to use VB6 to call oracle stored procedure with ref cursor as output parameter under a package in 10g database (10.1.03). Oracle client uses windows 9.2 / 10.1.02 (Oracle OLEDB Provider) . I found that when the package size increases(> 1000 lines codes), the data size transfer from database to VB client also increases. I try to trap the binary data flow between VB6 and database when calling packaged stored procedure. I found that VB6(or oracle client ??) will first download package spec then execute the requested stored procedure. This may explain the cause of increasing size.
However, this large download size for calling only one of the procedure will make my application run slowly when my application uses the package much. How can I solve this problem ? Does this relate to oracle client(p.s. this problem disappear when using Microsoft OLEDB Provider)?
    Thanks
    Steven

You can use a wrapper to get compiled code and if it's 10g you can do even more by putting it in a library.
OLEDB from VB6 still using Oracle 'Client' as you call Oracle NET.

  • Folio file size

My project is to convert an 800 page Indesign print catalog into a DPS folio. I have 14 out of 26 articles completed and received a message on my iPad saying I was almost out of space message while previewing in Content Viewer. When I deleted it from Content Viewer it is just over 11gb and when I looked at the local resource on hard drive it is 5.75gb. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Is it typical for the Content Viewer file to be twice the size of the local file? Which is a better indicator of what to expect for a finished project?
This is obviously way too large. How can I make this a more manageable size? First, this has a dual orientation. The vertical is produced first, then an alternate layout is created for the horizontal. The vertical is deleted and the layout is saved as _h. Would having only one orientation reduce my overall size significantly? Each article's individual .folio file size ranges from 400mb-600mb. It was my understanding that Folio Builder compressed/converted all images used in the articles. Do I need to convert all of the high resolution print images into low resolution?
    Thanks,
    Joe

On further inspection, I found my problem. It appears to be a web content overlay. An article's .folio file is 482mb with this layer in the Indesign layout file and only 5.3mb when removed from the Indesign layout file.
The content associated with the overlay is 2 HTML files at 2kb each and images, css, and javascript totaling 524kb.
Why does this create over a 900% increase in the file size?
    How can I fix this?
Will an html resources folder work? I thought that was only for html articles.

  • Large folio file size

We are half way through a book that comprises 100 single page articles. However it is already nearly 500 MB and this isn't sustainable.
Does the following affect the file size:
Is the Folio file size affected by the number of individual articles, would it be smaller if we had stacks of say 10 articles each with 10 pages rather than 100 single pages?
Every page has a two picture (JPG) object state, the first image is an extreme elargement of the image that visible only for a about a second before the full frame image appears. Each page has a caption using Pan overlay that can be dragged into the page using a small tab.Does an Object State increase the file size over and above the images contained within it?
We have reduced the JPGs to the minimum acceptable quality and there is no video in the Folio.
Any ideas would be much appreciated?

800 MB worth of video sounds crazy.
Of course, a high number of videos can bring you to that.
I saw bigger dps apps. I think the apple limit lies around 4 gb (remember,
that is more than 25% of a whole 16 gb iPad)
The mp4 video codec does a really good job while keeping the quality high.
And the human eye is more forgiving to quality when it comes to moving
    images compared to still imagery.
I wrote a collection of tipps and ideas how to reduce your file size.

  • Movie rental download sizes

    Hello all,
Looking at the apple website I wasn't able to find any information about the download size of SD and HD movies rented from the iTS. Any idea where I could find more info about that?
(a quick search on google was of no help either)
    Thanks,
    Nicolas

When you go to the rental movies section of itunes, click on the movie that you are interested in renting. Right above the button that says "Rent Movie" you will see the following information, including the file size of that particular movie:
    Genre: Action & Adventure
    Released 2007
    Twentieth Century Fox
    Run Time: 2:08:55
    1.51GB <<<Size of Film
    Format Widescreen
    Rated PG-13

  • IWeb 08 and Photo Download Size not sticking to Original (Full Quality)

I am using iWeb 08 to post personal webpages and photo galleries but even when I select *"Original (Full Quality)"* under Photo Download Size in the inspector it slips off full size and make smaller pictures. I almost always want to offer full resolution image to my friends and family. Is there a way to make this work more reliably? Is it being fixed?

I found in this iWeb test pertained more to the image pixel dimensions than the jpg compression level of the downloadable file as you found out.
    Happy New Year
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Report for download sizes?

    Hi,
I realise  that when viewing each file in DW there is a download size/time info panel at the bottom of the page, but  I'm looking to generate a report of the download size for each page of my website so I can evaluate and compare at a glance. Is this possible ?
    Many thanks in advance

I'm not aware of anything that would give you results for all your pages at once, but you could check each page here:
    http://analyze.websiteoptimization.com
If you use Firefox and have the Web Development toolbar, it's part of the toolbar and very easy to look up each page as you go.

  • Does anyone know what the download size is for iOS 7.0.3?

Does anyone know what the download size is for iOS 7.0.3?

It depends on your device.  For my devices it ranged from 1.1 - 1.3GB.

  • Download Size / Download Time

Is there a way tell how long it will take to download a pdf file at various connection speeds.
I have CC and Dreamweaver shows the Download Size/Download Time for html files.  Is there such a tool for Adobe Acrobat?  I'd like to see how long it will take at various connection speeds (for desktop and mobile/portable decives) to download a file.
    Thanks

afaik Acrobat has no such feature; but then the main interface for download / upload from/to the web is the browser not Acrobat.
    Be well...

  • "Download Size Require"

I don't get it... I try to download an application for my DROID BIONIC but it just says "Download size require" Can someone help me? Also should I change to a RAZR?

    Classy;
It's the "Data Saver" that's giving you that message.
Go to Settings - Battery and Data Manager - Data Saver
    And uncheck "Data Saver".
That will allow you to download files from the Marketplace when you're NOT on a wireless connection.
(I normally keep Data Saver enabled, then uncheck it when there's something I want to download.)

  • Download size vs installed size strangeness

    Targets (1): deluge-1.1.6-1
    Total Download Size:    2.25 MB
    Total Installed Size:   0.88 MB
1st time I've seen something like that...

That is very weird.  Based on my calculations it should say the installed size is 9.75MB and my calculations used the command that creates this number within makepkg!  So how this is wrong is beyond me...
