Reseting File Sharing Preferences for admin account

Hello:
Was recently trying to network my macbook with my brothers Vista laptop.
Followed a few websites, could get his pc to access my mac but couldn't access the PC.
At any rate -- now I have been getting a lot of permission errors on my macbook.
I repaired permissions via disk utility. Still -- some folders are randomly loading up as read-only and I have to change them to read/write in getinfo.
Is there anyway to reset my sharing preference pane? Or at the very least stop the random permission errors.
Haven't had an OS issue prior to this.
thanks.

Chr,
why not use a Group Policy?

  • Reset File Sharing Preferences?

Is there a way to reset the file sharing preferences in Leopard?
On a fresh install of Leopard you get an automatically made folder entry under Shared Folders in File Sharing in System Preferences. The folder is called, for example, "Reuben's Public Folder". I deleted this folder entry by mistake and now I want to get it back. Sure, I can just add my Public folder to this Shared Folders list, but I want it to be called "Reubens's Public Folder". Can anyone please tell me how to do that?

Thanks for the link biovizier, that was enough information for me to figure it out :)!!!
    HERE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS:
    (1) click on Finder and then "go to folder", type in /var/db/dslocal/nodes
    (2) then do a get info on the "Default" folder and allow EVERYONE read+write access
    (3) do the same for the the following two folders, CONFIG and SHAREPOINTS
    (4) do a get info on the Public.plist file, and allow EVERYONE read+write access
    (5) rename the Public.plist to "username's Public Folder.plist"
    (6) open this file in a text editor (I used SubEthaEdit), and change every instance where it just says "Public" to "username's Public Folder"
    (7) save the file, and change the permissions of that file and all of the folders above back to "no access" for the EVERYONE group
Close and Restart File Sharing in System Preferences .... and you're done!
It'll still say the folder being shared is "Public" inside of System Preferences, but when users connect, it'll say "username's Public Folder"

  • File sharing permissions for AD Domain Admins?

I've binded Mavericks to a Windows network with Active Directory, turned on File Sharing under System Preferences > Sharing, and added the Domain Admins group; how can I configure permissions so that the Domain Admins can read and write to and from all files and folders on the MAC HD without affecting other user's permissions?
If I "apply to enclosed items..." the Domain Admins' Read & Write permissions from the root volume then Everyone (gets unintentionally propagated) can access all files!
Ideally, the Domain Admins need the same permissions as the root administrator even after a new user has logged onto the MAC and had their Home Folders created in the future; In other words I need them to be able to access files and folders for all accounts past, present and future, but all other user's access must stay the same. Does that make sense?
Is this even possible with AD binding? Would having a MAC OSX Server/Open Directory facilitate this better?
Any help would be much appreciated!

I tried adding the Domain Admins to the wheel group, but that never helped either. Also the "apply to enclose items" only seems to work for the entire share (left side)--not individual users or groups (right sde).

  • Screen Sharing Broken for Network Account Admins Mac OS X Server

    Re: OS X 10.8.4, Server.app 2.2.1
After replacing a failed Airport Extreme -- and the resulting changes in server IP address -- Screen sharing is now broken for "Network" account administrators. "Local" adminstrators can screen share successfully.
When logging in as a Local Admin, the System Log contains a single entry:
Authentication: SUCCEEDED :: User Name: localadmin :: Viewer Address: 10.0.1.6 :: Type: DH
When logging as a Network Admin, a similar line appears:
Authentication: SUCCEEDED :: User Name: testnetwork :: Viewer Address: 10.0.1.6 :: Type: DH
followed by screen-fulls of other log messages, eventually ending -- a minute or two later -- with:
    screensharingd[77693]: uid 1034 not found
screensharingd[77693]: unable to get width and height of display.
at which point the client sees a "Error: Network connection lost." alert. 1034 is the UID of "testnetwork", as seen in
    dscl /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 -list /Users UniqueID
So apparently, Network users are authenticated, but screensharingd cannot find the user.
changeip -checkhostname returns "success". Just to be sure, I  "Updated the Host Name" as suggested by the "Network Configuration Has Changed" alert in Server.app -- problem remains.
How does one debug this? Are there more comprehensive debug logging options available for screensharingd or login window? Anyone else seen this problem?

    Linc: thanks for your inquiry.
Here are more steps I've taken to solve this problem:
    1) From a Time Machine backup to a test partition, I restored the server from before the failure of the base station and found that the login problems were present then.
    2) On yet another test partition, I created from scratch a new OS X Server. Added a local administrator, and a network admistrator and discovered the same problem: network administrators cannot screen share, although in this case, they are simply unauthorized.
Using dscl, things look OK: there is a /Local/Default/Groups/com.apple.access_screensharing that lists only the admin group, and the admin group contains networkAdmin.
Furthermore, I can log in as the networkadmin from the login window, as "Other".
Furthermore, I can ssh into the server using the networkadmin credential.
I used odutil to boost the logging OpenDirectory log level. The logs are very verbose, but to my eyes, it looks like OD recognizes the networkUser, but screensharingd fails to authorize. See logs below.
Can someone confirm that screen sharing from network admin accounts works at all? Is there a way to elevate screensharingd logging to find out more about why it rejects network admins?
    TIA

  • How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

I have no idea if I have posted in the correct area as this is my first forum post within the apple support community!
I have been using a 21.5" imac running 10.6.8 for the past 5 years to run my small home based architectural design business. I have been using the internal hard drive & backing up the necessary data to a simple usb external hard drive. I am now looking to firstly purchase a new imac 27" retina and purchase new autocad lt 2015 for mac software. I am looking to have another imac (my old mac) running in conjunction with the new mac. I want both macs to be able to access the same data and am slightly unsure what is the best way to achieve this.....As my old mac is currently only running snow leopard and an old version of autocad for mac 2011 it wont run on any more recent OS. Essentially i believe I have 2 main options with this.... (1) I Accept that I have to purchase 2 no. autocad lt 2015 licences @ a cost of £2300. Or option (2), I only run autocad on the new mac as this will be the primary station and the old mac used for primarily for admin & accounts. I have also recently discovered that it is possible to rent autocad licences for £300p/a which may also be another option (3)!
I previously had a problem where my hard drive failed on my mac & lost all data on the internal hard drive, luckily I had been backing up all data regularly to my external hard drive and now loss occurred! Obviously with any new system I want to ensure that my data is safe!
I currently utilise about 250GB of data for business operations but this will obviously grow with time.
In the future I would like to have the option of potentially being able to access the network data remotely via macbook pro whilst abroad although at this stage this really isnt my primary objective. Although I believe I could achieve this through apple remote desktop.
I suppose I should provide some information with regard to the required speed of the system...I regularly open 50-100 photos at the same time totalling around 250-500MB. I would like the system to be able to handle this fairly easily.
I have been trawling through forums and to be honest they are totally confusing me. I have also spent time on the phone to the apple business team and have also discussed my objectives with a member of the apple team in store.
There have been various options advised to me and I really do not know which is the most appropriate route forward.
1 - Using a mac mini as the file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the mac mini to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
2 - Using a time capsule as a file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the TC to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
3 - Using the new mac hard drive and linking the 2 macs via thunderbolt (old mac does not have thunderbolt and so I guess I would need another new mac?!) and then backing up the data to a time capsule.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!

    Hi sblemings,
    Welcome to the community.
I think with your scenario you should ask yourself, how complicated do you want the setup to be and how much time would you have to be able to resolve an issue should one occur with this setup.
All the options that have been advised would work but they come with complexity and therefore time.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!
    option 1
Would be a way to achieve what you want, it would centralise your files and you would only need to backup your file server (as long as all the files you wanted backed up were on it). This could be achieved either using the client and sharing various folders or using Server which would give you more options than you would possibly need.
    option 2
This is exactly like option 1 except that you wouldn't have to administer another mac however you may limit any future growth.
    option 3
This option I probably wouldn't pick, you could achieve this with firewire and use a firewire to thunderbolt adapter (saves you having to buy a new iMac)
    option 4
This option would, depending on your RAID level, give you disk redundancy but remember you would still need to back this up, as RAID is NOT a backup solution.
I would also ask is there a pressing need to keep the old iMac in service and complicating things by having a server / NAS? Could you not just transfer all your information over to this and continue with the one backup? I would say that doing it this was would be the simplest way of achieving what you want from what I can take from your question.
As for remotely accessing your data, if you have the right hardware the way to achieve this would be to use a VPN and connect back to your data. However a potentially easier way for you ,would be to use a service like logmein or teamviewer to connect back.
Hope this helps, and by all means any questions please ask.

  • Power book G4 Leopard 10.5.8. File sharing preference checked but not working after start up until unchecked and the rechecked?

I hope the title is enough info, please ask. In the mean time I have created an applescript to open preferences/ sharing and uncheck then check the file sharing box. This works but I would obviously prefer it just work normally. I have no corrupt preference files. Perhaps a file is missing? Thank you.

    Greetings Kwnez
I'm not up to your level of expertise yet. I'm networking and file sharing too, on my Mac Powerbook 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4; OS 10.5.8 Lepoard. At the public library I found by asking the clerk a book Authored by David Pogue. "Mac OS X Leopard the Missing Manual". It (the book) has helped me ask better questions. I'm not saying that your question "
Power book G4 Leopard 10.5.8. File sharing preference checked but not working after start up until unchecked and the rechecked?
is hard for me to understand, I went to system preferences and looked at the sharing box. when I clik it it opens up and the first thing I see is my computers name, and under that i see, " Computers on your local network can access your computer at: ...-powerbook-g4-15.local"
What I'm saying is "Are we on the same Page"

  • Basic File Sharing question between user accounts on my iMac

I don't understand how to be able to share and download to one common folder among User Accounts on my iMac. I am trying to use a Clean Account as a test, and wanted to copy a file I downloaded from the web in one account into this clean account folder, and install the file.
I went to Sharing and thought I turn File Sharing on. Logged into the Clean account and Apple+I the folder, changing access priviledges to the folder. Then copy the file into the Clean User Account.
But it doesn't work that way. Can anyone help me understand sharing between accounts?

File Sharing is for sharing files between two different machines, not between different accounts on the same machine. If you want to share files on one machine, you just need to put them in a folder everyone has access to, like the /Users/shared folder. Also, don't go fooling around with folder permissions... that's a good way to mess things up. If I had a nickel for every time someone messed up their system using the "Apply to enclosed items" option when changing permissions, I'd be a rich man!

  • What's the best Bluetooth file sharing app for iPhone

I'm trying to find a good BT file sharing app for an iPhone 5. I've noticed that the iPhone 5 won't even detect devices such as other phones or computers with BT but seems to have no issue with BT accessories such as satnav. My iPod touch has no problem detecting any BT device which seems odd.
So, is there a good BT file sharing app availble for an iPhone 5?

You won't find any Bluetooth File Sharing app that will work with non-iOS devices. That is something iOS simply does not support.

  • In August installed PE12  on Windows Vista with incorrect Sharing Preference for Email Client. Shows default Adobe Email Service How do I change it to Windows Mail?

Had PE6 previously to installing PE12 on Windows Vista.  PE 12 installation went OK except for the Sharing Preference for the Email Client. Existing  PE12 client is the default Adobe email service not the correct Windows Mail for Vista. How do I make this change..

    Hi,
I think that for PSE 12, you may need to switch to Windows Live Mail
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=29224
You may find that you then also need the following fix.
Freeze or error “There is no email program” | Share via email | Elements Organizer | Windows 7
I think that the problem is that the new versions of PSE do not know where to look for the mail client.

  • HT201301 I see some iOS apps in the file sharing list for my iPad device but I do not see the same APP on the file sharing list of my other iOS device

There are some iOS apps appear in the file sharing list  of my iPad that does not appear in my iPhone file sharing list. Why is that and why iBook App does not show on the sharing list of my iPad?

The apps which show on the file sharing section on your iPad when connected to your computer's iTunes, you have exactly the same apps installed on your iPhone - they are not separate iPad and iPhone apps that you have installed on your iPad/iPhone, and only the iPad version supports file sharing ?
For iBooks, that won't show, it doesn't support file sharing. You can add ibooks / epubs / PDFs to your computer's iTunes library (the iBooks app if you are using a Mac with OS X Mavericks on it) via File > Add To Library, and you sync them to a device via its Books tab :
If you want to copy them off the device to your computer's iTunes (to the iBooks app on Mavericks) then File > Devices > Transfer Purchases will copy them over (that will copy PDFs and epubs from the iBooks app on your device, not just ibooks).

  • HT5312 How do I reset my security question for my account?

How do I reset my security question for my account?

Read the HT5312 page that you posted from, it has instructions for how to reset them i.e. if you have a rescue email address on your account then steps 1 to 5 half-way down that page should give you a reset link.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 page that you posted from to add a rescue email address for potential future use

  • SMB File Sharing only works for Admin Accounts???

I'm using a mac mini as a small file server. It will share files to WindowsPCs using SMB but there is a problem.
On the Option dialog where you select accounts to share files and folders using SMB only Admin accounts show up. This is far from ideal as I'd prefer to using Sharing Only or Standard accounts.
Is this a known issue? Is there a solution?

What permissions are you setting on the share?  My guess is you are only using user, group, and other (POSIX).  You need to add an ACL to the list and then set read/write or full control.

  • Changed file viewing settings for Guest account, now iMac won't boot :(

I'll start this off by mentioning that I'm not really a techie type person, but I'll do my best to describe what I did as accurately as possible. And I'm pretty good at following layman's terms troubleshooint advice!
I recently decided to move my iMac into the living room of my apartment. I have never found the need to create a Guest account, but I figured it might be convenient for..well, a guest every now and then. But when I created the guest account I discovered very quickly that they would have access to all of my photos, documents, movies, etc. via the "view all documents" "view all photos" tabs on the left-hand side of the Finder window. I googled what to do and people were saying that it is best to change the viewing options of particular folders via the "get info" tab when you right-click on a folder. There were three categories, the first one I believe was Admin or the main user, the second is "wheel" and the third says "Everyone". I changed the "Everyone" access on the folders I wanted private from read-writable to "none". I left the "wheel" and "admin" categories alone. I also did this to the utilities folder, and the library under the assumption it would only affect guest access to these files, not admin access!
Also, under the Account Preferences tab in the Apple menu I disabled the viewing of shared folders for the guest. I also disabled automatic login.
Next thing I know, while I'm under the guest login trying to test out my security updates, I see I can't click on anything! Or open anything! I can't open the finder at all, I can't open the internet, I can't even get to the Apple drop-down menu. I couldn't even log out of guest. I had to turn off my computer without shutting it down. I turned it back on, and it went through the motions of booting up until the blue screen with the grey dashed loading circle (no beach ball, thank god). It acts like it will proceed beyond that point, the grey circle disappears for a moment, but then nothing happens and that process starts over. Like it's stuck and can't find it's own files. I also notice a tiny white square in the upper left-hand corner of the blue screen if that means anything.
I don't know what the heck I did. I think I somehow managed to block my own admin access (is that even possible??).
    -Shayna

You need to get the install discs, erase the hard drive, and reinstall all the software from scratch. When acquiring a used Mac there's no way to know what condition its software is in... there might be hacks, security holes, pirated software, keyloggers, credit card sniffers, or other even riskier stuff on it. Using a pre-owned Mac's software as-is is a Very High Security Risk. Your Mac's software is obviously distressed. What's more, you are not licensed to use any Apple software unless you own and are in possession of the install discs.
Get the discs and reinstall. Apple will send you new ones that match your model for a small shipping fee. Call them and provide your Mac's serial number.

    Try this:
Quit iMovie. Delete its prefs file at the admin accounts home folder at ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie... (or something like that -- I'm at a Windows box right now). Then launch iMovie and rebuild its prefs as you like.

  • Why are my system services disabled for Admin accounts?

    Hi all,
I noticed that pretty much all services are disabled in my main (administrator) account. ("make new stickie note" from selection, Grab, import image, look up in dictionary, mail, font etc... Everything is a no go.
I set up a regular account as a test and they all seem to work. I just bought my mac recently and installed 160 gigs worth of documents/profedssional apps and I'm dreading having to go through all that again just so I can have a fully functional os!
Is there an easy way to copy all my settings from my admin account to another account? Or even better, is there a way to turn on all the fun services in the admin account?
    Thanks for any info!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Try deleting the Desktop settings file. Open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
    ~/Library/Preferences
Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", and restart. Finally, open System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver, and change the desktop wallpaper
