Resetting preferences -- what all should I save first?

Hi, I've got to reset my preferences in CS4 since the tools are wigging out.  I'm trying to figure out what all I need to save first (going through looking for "Define" dialogs).  Anyone have a full list?  I'd like to come back to things mostly the way they are now (only working).
Thanks, Phyllis

That script was mentioned in a nother thread, yesterday, and Harbs pointed out that it does not yet back up presets, so you'll still need to do that.
My list is Document Presets and Printer Presets. Prefs reset doesn't mess with PDF presets, workspaces, or keyboard shortcuts (though there's no harm in backing those up too in case of major drive failure). You reload default styles and swatches from other docs that have them in use, so you can save an empty doc with nothing but swatches and styles as a backup for that. I also make backup copies of the two critical preference files, InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData from a working set, then I just overwrite those with the backup copies instead of doing a keyboard reset, and other than the recent file list you wouldn't know you've repalced the prefs, and you won't have to reload anything, but that only works if you've already done the backup on a good set.

  • What size should i save my pictures to make a good high def. DVD?

Ok, I am using Elements 10 with Premere 10 to create a DVD high definition movie of our trip to Rome to display on our hi def tv. What I want to know is what size should I save my pictures after fixing them. The JPEGS are usually saved to around 2 mb while the NEF's are saved around 6-11 mb's.  I am afraid that the 2 mb files will not retain enough data to show well on the high def TV and maybe the 11 mb pictures may be overkill resulting in long rendering times and larger movie sizes. Anyone have any information on this. Both the Elements 10 and Premere 10 manuals don't address this. The only thing I could find was that they support up to 4086 x 4086 size pictures. Thanks in advance

    Hi,
I am not an expert on this subject but since nobody has replied yet, I thought I would give you my current thoughts on the subject so then someone can either confirm it or shoot me down in flames.
If we are talking about a HD TV, they have a screen resolution of about 1920 x 1080 or 1360 x 768 so if your images are greater than that, something has to do some down sizing.
I think that a normal DVD can has a limitation on size of 720 x 480 (NTSC) or 720 x 576 (PAL). To get a greater resolution than that you need to talk about Blu-ray.
The important thing to think about is the aspect ratio. The widescreen TVs are 16:9 and your photos are probably 4:3. If you want a full screen picture without black margins each side then I suggest that you do some cropping first.
I tend to crop to 16:9 aspect ratio (using crop tool) and then resize the image to 1920 x 1080 (using image resize). I use a larger size if I know I want to use pan & zoom effects. I use that size, even though some pixels will be lost, just in case I switch to Blu-ray in the future and it might save a bit of work then.
Hope that helps (and is correct)

  • What All Should I Learn To Achieve These Effects?

    Hi,
I would like to know what all I would need to learn and which extra plugins I would need to buy to achieve these effects (Looking mainly to do the text effects and all the in video transitions)
I already have After effects Cs4.
    http://youtu.be/tIPLTiKAQTo
The reason why I am asking this in particular is because I will be doing only these kind of effects and nothing more. So I neednt waste time learning things I will probably never use.
    Thank you.

Unless there's a specific reason for reducing the frame size of the original footage I always work at maximum resolution. IOW, Don't resize your 550D footage unless you can come up with a really good reason to do so.
My content is 100% for the web. I will be creating just one or two videos in 720P (For streaming via amazon S3 and cloudfront) and the rest in 480P (For youtube).
Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all solution to the problem.
I understand. My case is pure youtube and web videos. So I guess I should follow the below scenario
    --> Shoot in Full HD.
-->Import the full HD to some video editing program and perform trimming as required
--> Import trimmed full HD to AE.
--> Apply the required effects (similar to the ones I showed in the video in my first post).
--> Import it in Adobe Media Encoder and Resize it to 480p or 720p as per the requirement and render.
--> Follow the above 4 procedures for the opener video (I have spotted a very good opener AE template for videohive.net)
--> Take the output videos and then stitch them together using a software like sony vegas or some video editing software and join them
    --> Render the output video
Does the above procedure seem good?
A preset is something everyone using AE should know how to use and to create.
I tried some text animation presets. Worked out fine. Going to learn some more on this.
    There you go.
Thanks a lot for your help.
If you like wasting a lot of time, effort and storage space you should use the workflow you propose.  If you want to be more efficient, you should edit your footage BEFORE you do AE work.
How about the work flow I mentioned above?
There are all kinds of editing applications availble,  Adobe makes one: Premiere Pro.
I took a look at it. It seems too costly. I think I will go with Sony Vegas

  • What quality should I save progressive jpegs for e-commerce products?

Should I save them as low (3), medium (5) or high (8). I want my images to load as fast as possible and still look good. My images are 1024 x 1024.

Use the "Save for Web" option.  Put in the resolution you want, and then dial down the quality, it will show you what it looks like.  Go as low as you're willing given the quality it shows.

  • My iPod Nano 2nd gen. has a black caterpillar-like shape on the screen when turned off. I recharged and reset. What else should I do?

My iPod Nano 2nd gen. has a black caterpillar-like shape on the screen when turned off.
It disappears when turned on. It must mean something. I recharged and reset. What else, if anything, should I do?

You can work through the remaining five 5 R's of troubleshooting.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
It might also be a good idea to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up and restore it once more in iTunes.
Otherwise, it's likely a hardware issue with the iPod's LCD display, meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service either via Apple or a third party repair service. Here is Apple's repair pricing.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Note that they don't actually repair the device, but exchange it for one of the same generation, model, and capacity.  A third party service will actually replace the damage part for a little less.  Google "iPod screen repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.

  • What resolution should I save images for fixed-layout epub?

I have produced an illustrated history book that was created with 300dpi images for print publication.  My next step is to create a fixed-layout epub. Is there a particular resolution that I should set for the images?  Is there a single resolution that I can use to target all tablets and e-readers that accept fixed-layout epubs?
My strategy was going to be to generate a PDF of the book (with no text) and import the PDF pages as the background images for the fixed-layout epub. I am guessing that I should use 150 dpi when saving the PDF.
I'm just a little worried that if I create the fixed-layout epub with 150 dpi images, it may not show up correctly on tablets that don't have high resolution screens?
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • What file should i save my entourage contacts to import in address book

    Help, again, sorry.
I need to import contacts from Entourage to Mail, what type of file is needed to be exported from Entourage to enable mail to import it?
    Thank you.
    Dean Jackson

The default export option for Entourage contacts is a tab-delimited plain text file which should work since the Tiger Address Book includes a Text File import option which doesn't always work as intended.
A better option in my opinion is creating a folder on the Desktop named Contacts or whatever you prefer.
Select a contact in the Entourage address book and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Select All to select/highlight all contacts.
Click and drag the highlighted contacts to the created folder on the Desktop. This will create a copy of each contact as a separate vCard file.
At the Address Book menu bar, go to File > Import and select vCards. Navigate to the created folder on the Desktop.

  • What settings should I save my Ai made logo so that it can open correctly when placed into Id?

I am having an issue placing my Ai file, saved multiple ways, in InDesign without losing quality? Maybe save settings or a step-by-step? I work between Ps, Ai, Id often but just started using Ai to create my own graphics. The help is much appreciated!

Most probably it's just an issue of view settings in InDesign

  • Resetting Preferences the eazy way

It seems the universal cure for just about any problem in InDesign is "resetting the preferences". It sounds like Adobe decided to add this option in a rather obfuscated way -- something you could have customer support tell clients over the phone, and impress the hell out of them. Well, it bit them right back, as it seems everyone needs to do that every now and then.
To reset preferences, start your InDesign
b pressing Shift, Control, and Alt keys down.
Now, with these keys down, you cannot start the program by double-clicking, so you have to start it and
    i then
whack those keys as fast as you can. As InDesign should ask you on startup whether you wish to reset or not, this expert advice is usually followed by "... if it doesn't, you weren't fast enough."
A tip for the slow of hand: locate the program on your desktop or in your Start menu, press-and-hold the three magic buttons, right-click InDesign with the mouse and select "Open".

The usual caveats about saving all your presets to external files FIRST so you don't lose them continue to apply (you do that by selecting them in the various "define" dialogs and clicking "save"). Resetting preferences removes all the custom stuff you added (though your workspaces and keyboard shortcut sets will be safe) and you'll need to reload document and printer presets after doing this.
You can also find the two files InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData in your user profile (you'll need to show hidden files in Explorer) and simply rename them with ID closed. They'll be replaced, but not destroyed, when ID restarts (without fumbling with the keyboard) and if it should turn out new prefs don't fix whatever was wrong, you can shut down ID and go back to Explorer, delete the new files, and rename the old ones back.
Where, you ask, are these files? With so many versions of InDesign and Windows it's getting too complex to list all of the locations (but they will always be in your user profile). In CS and CS2 they will be together under something like Application Settings\Adobe\InDesign\[version]\ for CS3 the defaults will be there, and the saved data will be somewhere like Local Settings\Application Settings\Adobe\InDesign\[version]\caches, and CS4 adds another level (folder) with your language, like en-US, to the path. A file search in Explorer that includes hidden files should turn them up wherever they are hiding.
Finally, once you have a set of defaults that seems to be what you want and working smoothly, go find those two files and save copies somewhere safe (and someplace you'll remember). Use the copies to replace the current set any time you have doubts.

  • What DPI should I have photos at for iPad?

I understand the ideal resolution for photos on the iPad is 1024x768. What DPI should I save them at for the optimal display quality?

But it won't make a large file size smaller right?
If your files are managed by iPhoto or Aperture on a Mac, then yes it will. You need only compare the storage space allocated for your iPad photos against the storage space required for the original photos in the managing application. For example, I have 3 April Aperture albums currently installed on my iPad. On the iPad they require a bit more than 200 MBs of space. The original files that remain stored on my hard drive by Aperture take up 600 MBs of space. The amount of storage space saved will depend on the format and dimensions of the original files. I.e., the less compressed and larger the original file, the more space you will save during this automated optimization by iTunes as it syncs the content. Conversely, the smaller and more compressed the files you sync via iTunes, the less savings your will realize until you reach a point where no optimization takes place and the iPad file is the same as the original file. I don't think we can explain this in any simpler terms here.
As to the dpi vs. ppi (and/or lpi for that matter), I assume the poster was left-handedly attempting to point out that the terms have somewhat technical differences and should be applied more judiciously with respect to the medium or device to which you are making your reference. However, most of us did realize what you were trying/meant to say.

I tried to reset my iPhone (3gs) with deleting all data. When it power off and automatically again on then it is showing Apple logo only. Not restore and startup my phone. iPhone alerming low charge and I tried to charge and not charging.
    What I should do now?

Something has gone wrong. Turn your phone off, then force it into recovery mode:
Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new. In your case, select "new".

Photoshop CS6 keeps crashing. I am using a brand new IMAC, I have 16GB RAM recently updated as it was running slow with 8GB and lots of hardrive space. When it crashes, i lose all my presents and it changes my preferences, it also fails to save or produce a recovered file despite settings asking it to do so every 5 mins now. When i try to report the problem, it says it has found an issue and gives me a link to a solution....but wont let me click on the link.... PLEASE HELP! It's killing my productivity.

If the crash started right after you added RAM, it could be a bad Ram dimm. You can try this - change the amount of RAM in Photoshop to 4G, this should stop Photoshop from using the higher ram. If it doesn't crash, it's probably the ram. Or run a diagnostic app. You don't say when it crashes, what you're doing when it crashes - it there a pattern? Did it ever work on this computer? Did it work on your previous computer? Without a lot of data, it could be related to the new computer... What OS version? Did you recently update it? Have you updated Photoshop to the most recent update?
Do you have any plug-ins loaded? Try restarting Photoshop, and immediately press & hold the shfit key to turn off plug-ins.

Is it wise to keep the Nikon camera files "DSC's"  after downloading them and converting to DNG files via Adobe converter for lightroom use. In other words do the DNG files have all the raw data I would ever need in processing or should I save the camera's DSC files?

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

  • What all happens if I reset everything (Content and Settings) on my iPhone 4?

The day before yesterday I have discovered a problem where I have an app stuck on 'waiting...' And the app refuses to either download or delete. I've tried everything, syncing my phone to the computer, trying to redownload it on the App Store, but nothing seems to be working. I'm now assuming the only way to get rid of the app is to reset all content and settings off of my phone, which would be the last resort for me and is something I'd rather not do. But if I do reset everything on my iPhone 4, I would like to know all 'side effects' of this action and if it affects any data concerning credit card information or if my number or data plan will need to be added again. It would be very nice to find a way to avoid resetting my phone and delete the 'waiting..' App, if anyone could give me any information about that problem. If not, it would still be great if I could know what will happen to my phone if I reset it. Thank you so much, any and all information would be greatly appreciated !!

What you are describing as "reset" is actually called a Restore.
FIrst try doing a Reset by holding the power and Home buttons down for 5-10 seconds until you see Apple logo on the screen. This does not erase any of your data or setting, but often helps with problems like yours.
Restore Is a more involved process, but you'll still be OK if you follow instructions.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
