Restore database to different host

Hi
Suppose, I have a full rman backup of a database called "orcl" in the tape.
Can I restore this backupset to another host with database and instance name "test" ?
I will first restore controlfile and datafiles respectively.
In other words, is it necessary to have same database name and instance name if I want to do restore ?

Hi!
If you can connect from the target host to the source host than you can use the "DUPLICATE DATABASE" with "SET NEW NAME" option in rman. This is the easiest way:
[http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/rcmdupdb.htm#BRADV169]
[http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14194/rcmsynta028.htm#RCMRF126]
If the connection is not allowd from the target host to the source host than you can simply restore and recover the ORCL database on the target host and rename it with NID (DBNEWID) utility:
[http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14215/dbnewid.htm#SUTIL014]

  • To restore backup on different host using RMAN

    Hi All,
    Friend I need your help once again. I want to restore my database from the past backup to new HOST by keeping the original database intact using RMAN. Let me explain the scenario:-
    Databas Version - 8.1.7
    OS - Solaris 5.8
    We are using RMAN with Tivoli as third party media management. I just need to restore the database from this tape library using RMAN with recovery catalog on new server. The only doubt I have is how I will make the backups of the production database whose backup has to be restored available on the new host where I have to create new database.
    I will be using different file structure for the newly restored database. Do I have to create TDPO files seperately on the server on which I have to restore the database.
    Please reply asap.
    Regards
    Harpreet Singh

    You need to create a tdpo.opt file of source on the destination database. Then, allocate channel using this TDPO_OPTFILE and recover database.

    its up 24*7.
    i know how to create dup db using cold backup..but dont know how to create it using RMAN Backup..
    I have googled..but getting issues..
    Steps Taken till now
    Note- I dont have catalog created on live db..
    I already have set the tnsnames.ora on both servers
    1) Took full backup plus archivelog plus control file on 15
    2) moved it to another host..ie 27
    3) now on live db..
    I conected to rman target /
    so i m now connected to prod db
    than i try to conect to rman auxiliary sys/sys@dubpd..
    But it gives me insufficient privilages error..
    Can you tell me what to do next..Coz unless i get into mount phase on sever 27( new server)..i cannot use the control file from backup).my dupdb is up in nomount phase..but what enxt i can do..to restore the control file and than restore the backup after cataloging them to right path..

    My tns name for live server is..*primary* on live server .. whose ip is 15..(lIVE SERVER).
    i also have another entery with tns names- standby .on live server .. whose ip is 27..(other server for duplicated db).
    now @command prompt..@live server.. i did sqlplus sys/sys@standby
    It gives me ORA-12518
    Am i missing something..1- It could be a network problem. You may enable tracing on listener (and examine the logs).
    2- Add "DIRECT_HANDOFF_TTC_LISTENER=OFF" to listener.ora, then reload the listener
    3- You may want to increase "large_pool_size"

  • Error while restoring database with different name on subscriber

    Hi all,
    I am using merge replication in sql server 2008R2. Yesterday I wanted to create a test environment, so
    I did:
    1. on publisher I restored from backup production db with another name ( lets call it TEST and new files
    .mdf, .ldf and no switch KEEP_REPLICATION). After this step original replication between production
    dbs worked fine.
    2. on subscriber I did the same: restore as new db TEST with new
    files .mdf, .ldf and no switch KEEP_REPLICATION.
    Unfortunately I noticed, that after second step replication stopped. SQL agent replication job on Subscriber
    is gone.
    Why restoring db with new name did affect original replication?
    Finally the most important: replication was set up by external company and I have to bring it to live now
    but I don't know this subject so good. How can I do it?
    Assuming, that there is no data change on subscriber in replicated tables is it enough when I select ‘reinitialize’
    on Publisher and Subscriber?
    Thanks in advance
    Artur

    Hello,
    Sorry for late response, but I was out of the office during last week.
    Regarding problem 1: restoring replication. I contacted guy who made originally our replication and he recreated subscription agent. So this is solved.
    problem 2: why did it happen?
    Lydia, in link which you provided I found only info about restoring db in replication, but I didn't want to restore replication.
    I checked SQL Server and Server Agent logs and there were no entries on that time. The only entries are regarding db restoring. Below:

    In Windows application log there were also no other entries, besides these above.
    I also could not check job history, because the job was gone in SSMS jobs list, while the subscription was present in SSMS Replication with info, that last successful synchronization was at 12:42 (there is a 5 min. sync period).
     I also don't understand how the job was deleted, because according this manual (http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/1803/auto-alert-for-sql-agent-jobs-when-they-are-enabled-or-disabled/) I have 2 triggers in sysjobs table and every time, when
    job is deleted/disabled I got @ notification. In this case I got no @.
    My SQL Server version:
    Product_Version Product_Level Edition
    10.50.2550.0 SP1 Standard Edition (64-bit)
    Any idea what happened?

    in this new database already created with the same name?

  • Move Engine Database to different Host without loosing data

    I have BPM application running in Production where both App DB and BPM engine schema in same host.
    I feel its good idea to move different host. Whats your thought on this?
    If I want to move and don't want to loose any data in production BPM schema, Is it possible to migrate data to new host after configuring BPM schema setup?
    What is your ideas?
    I use Oracle BPM 10.3.01
    Edited by: sideeque on Feb 23, 2011 7:51 AM

    Hi Michael,
    Not sure about AIX & DB2, but for Windows & MS SQL the next steps should be performed:
    1) Shut down J2EE and move backup of DB on the new host;
    2) Run ..\usr\sap\F12\JC30\j2ee\configtool\configtool.bat and change DB parameters here;
    3) Start J2EE.
    In your case I think will be the same.

  • Restore database to different drive

    I need to move an XE database from one machine to another. The original installation is on drive D: the new machine only has a drive C:. Is there a way of restoring a backup to an XE installation on a different drive ?
    I have tried copying the flash_recovery_area files across to the new machine. When I try to restore the backup, I get RMAN-04014: startup failed: ORA-02778: Name given for the log directory is invalid
    I presume this is because the log directory in the backed up database is D:
    Other things I have tried:
    * Copy the .dbf files - but the data file names for the tablespaces are all wrong, so the database gives ORA-01157 "cannot identify or lock file" for each tablespace.
    * Use RMAN set NEWNAME for datafile in conjunction with a
    * Use expdp/impdp to move the database, but I have wrapped PL/SQL functions and packages and expdp/impdp corrupts them [at least it does with Oracle SE 10.2.0.3 - I haven't checked with XE yet]
    I could perhaps use the orginal imp/exp, although I have had problems with my Oracle Advanced Queueing queues with it
    So my question is, how do I restore a backup or set of files from a shut down database from a drive D: XE installation onto a drive C: XE installation?

    * Copy the .dbf files - but the data file names for
    the tablespaces are all wrong, so the database gives
    ORA-01157 "cannot identify or lock file" for each
    tablespace.This can be the way, but you have to rename files. Once files have been copied to new destination, you can do as follows :
    1. Mount the DB
    SQL> startup mount
    2. Rename each datafile, tempfile and redo log :
    SQL> alter database rename file '<old path>' to '<new path>';
    3. Open the DB
    SQL> alter database open;

  • Can I restore the database (clone) to different Host/User account?

    Hi,
    We use RMAN catalog that backup our production database using "oracle" user (OS user is "oracle") account. We wanted to clone this database to different host and to different OS user (for example is "oradev") account. Both user has same group (oradba). Can I able to restore the control fies/data files to different user account (the account that wasn't backed up).
    Please update if you know of any documents/pdfs/links that explains this detail.
    Thanks in advance for your assistance,
    Ranga.

    Yes, the user account should be transparent assuming the backuppieces have the appropriate user/group permissions.

  • Installation of J2EE Adapter Engine with DB on different host

    Hello all,
    I don't know if this is the right thread, but hopefully it is.
    I have got following assignment:
    I have to install NW70 PI/XI J2EE Adapter Engine. The trouble is, that due to a CI and DB hosts politics it's necessary to have database on different host than the central instance is.
    But unfortunatelly the "SAPINST" program and its choice of J2EE Adapter Engine installation doesn't offer the possibility to install the product (J2EE AE) as a distributed system. SAPINST simply installs J2EE AE on one host including database. I've not succeeded the find a work-around.
    I got two ideas, but I would like to confirm them:
    1) Instal full SAP Java AS as a distributed system. After proper installation and patching I would use a SDM tool and deploy all necessary components to get a J2EE Adapter Engine "like" system. The  only problem is that I don't know exact difference between normal SAP Java AS and SAP J2EE Adapter Engine and I'm not sure where could I get all necessary .SAR files.
    2) Make a installation of SAP J2EE Adapter Engine as SAPINST allows. After installation and pathing, shutdown the system and move database to desired host, change all settings and start SAP J2EE AE as a distributed system. Only thing I'm not sure about is, if the J2EE AE would run in such a landscape.
    Could anyone help me to get out of this deadend ?
    Thank you for your comments in advance. Rewards points granted.
    Tomas

    Hi Jitendra,
    thank you for your effort.
    Maybe the question is more to Oracle forum part, because I don't think, that I would be able to do the installation as I described in point 1) (distributed JAVA AS and manuall deploying of AE components).
    Probably the SAPINST is built up in this way, because in most cases it's needed to install J2EE AE on side of the other integrated system and there is one special machine dedicated to it.
    If this is true and J2EE AE is really "normal JAVA AS" with some more functionality, I think the installation can be done as I described in point 2) - to install the J2EE AE locally, then shut it down and move the database to different host as required.
    Anybody with different idea ?
    Thank you

  • Restore RMAN from different Database Rman backup

    Hi Everybody
    I am practicing Rman so I have one query that how to restore rman backup from another database.
    For Example :
    1. I have Rman backup of DB1 with level 0 and level 1 cumulative database plus archievelog
    2. I need to import or restore Rman backup of DB1 to another database DB2.
    What is the procedure for doing the above queries. Please anyone one help me out.
    I have using oracle 10g r2 running in windows server 2003.
    Thanks in advance.

    These are the steps ; you need to write the appropiate commands for each step: Hope it helps!
    1) Take appropriate RMAN backup of the database db1. Note that you should turn on the CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP configuration so that we have the controlfile backed up after the database backup. When we restore the controlfile on new host from this autobackup piece, it will have the information of the latest backup.
    2) Create a PFILE for the destination database db2 using the database db1
    3) Move the backup pieces and the modified INIT.ORA file to the new host. Starting from 10g it is NO longer compulsory to copy the RMAN backup pieces to exactly the same location on the new host as the production location.
    4) Use the pfile created above to STARTUP NOMOUNT the database on the new host
    5) Now invoke RMAN and restore the controlfile specifying the location where the controlfile autobackup piece is restored on this new server. You can mount the database once the controlfile is restored successfully.
    6) You can skip this step if you have restored the RMAN backup pieces to exactly the same location they were backed up on database db1. If this is not the case then you need to catalog the RMAN backup pieces to make RMAN aware of thier new location on the new host. Note that CATALOG BACKUPPIECE command is available only starting from 10g.
    7) Having determined the point up to which media recovery should run, start the restore/recovery using for example:
    RMAN> run {
    2> set until sequence 59 thread 1;
    3> set newname for datafile 1 to '/new_location/system01.dbf';
    4> set newname for datafile 2 to '/new_location/undotbs01.dbf';
    5> set newname for datafile 3 to '/new_location/sysaux01.dbf';
    6> set newname for datafile 4 to '/new_location/users01.dbf';
    7> restore database;
    8> switch datafile all;
    9> recover database;

  • Restoring Web AS ABAP+JAVA or JAVA to different host

    Dear forum,
    We have a disaster recovery plan by using another host (call it as the backup host) to run SAP in case the main host is failed.
    The backup was done separately for DB, IFS and authorization, as well as the restore. After the restore, the profile parameters were changed to be pointing to the new host.
    We did a restore of ABAP+ JAVA and JAVA only systems from the backup that was performed on the main host to the backup host.
    In the JAVA part for both ABAP+JAVA and JAVA, I found a lot of things to change in configtool which are still pointing to the old host. I have tried to change the parameters that I found, but it didn't help.
    I could get the ABAP part up and running by maintaining WRKSRVTBLE and some SQL packages issues, but not for the JAVA part.
    Can I do a system copy from the main host to the backup host and in case of a disaster, the action is only restoring the DB part? Or any other suggestions?
    Thanks before,

    Let me make sure I understand what you are trying to do.  Your backup system is basically a copy of your production system running on a different host.  If the production system fails then you will restore the data from the most recent backup to the system running on the backup host.  Is that the scenario?
    If you are just trying to copy the system to a new host and get it up and running, I would recommend an officially supported method such as a homogenous system copy to do this.  However, the attached document in SAP note 568820 "iSeries: Implementing an Independent ASP (iASP) System" has an entire section on modifying an SAP system to run on a different host.
    You may want to consider taking your HA strategy one step further by implementing an iASP.  Your HA solution that you describe is very similar to the iASP solution, but I think an iASP will better meet your needs.
