Restore failure -cannot validate source -resource busy

After a successful creation of bootcamp volume with XP and MS Office I found 11GB too small a partition. I made an image of my OS and installed software, reformatted to a single volume, created a larger 32GB partition and attempted to restore the image to the Bootcamp volume. Same error each time "restore failure -cannot validate source -resource busy"
Stuck - any ideas?

You used WinClone to backup and restore Windows?

  • Restoring .ISO to FAT32 Hard Drive "Cannot Validate Source -Error Code 254"

I have a bootable ISO that I need to restore to a hard drive on a laptop with a broken disc drive but every time I try to restore any ISO to any volume, I'm given that error....
I'm not sure what the deal is and I've tried several things. I've tried changing the extensions to .dmg, I've tried using Carbon Copy Cloner to back up the contents and Pacifist to extract the packages to no avail...
I've read a little on this, but all info on Google seems to be people dealing with Linux distros. My ISO is just a bootable service disk for a Windows machine. It burns to disc with no problems and the disc is bootable, I just can't get it to go to a USb drive, external HD or internal HD via "restore" in Disk Utility.

This also appears to be happening when trying to copy a DVD/CD onto an external disk; the problem is not specific to disk images.

  • HT1526 I'm trying to delete files from the trash and an .InProgress file in Time Machine that cannot be moved to the trash. I cannot unmount the TM disk either.  If I use the chflags -R nouchg  command, I get a "Resource busy" message. Any suggestions?

I've got one or maybe two problems.  Time Machine routinely crashes and there is a file in the TM folder that is an .InProgress file at the end of successful backups. Can't delete it, even using various sudo commands in Terminal.  These come back with a "Resource busy" message.
Similarly, there is a Microsoft Office alias in my trash that will not delete, again including various delete or Terminal commands.  Also "Resource busy"
I can't reformat the TM volume since it cannot unmount and it also cannot unmount the whole disk, which contains some other backup files I'd rather keep.
    Any suggestions?
    Mike

I'm not sure I can be very helpful since I was doing a lot of things and ultimately the problems went away.  But one thing that definitely seemed to help was to shut down, restart, do something, shut down again and repeat.  So with a clean start, try to move the file to the trash.  If that works, shut down restart and look to see if it is still in the trash.  Empty the trash. Shut down if it appears to empty and then restart.  It seemed sometimes that the computer was doing what I wanted then something was overriding this and restoring.  The shutdowns immedately after I could do something but before it engaged an override operation seemed to keep this from happening.
Sorry to not have more to offer but...

  • Disk image Restore returns "Could not validate source - error 254"

I had backed up an older G4 with a disk image of the boot disk. I was having severe problems so I reformatted the boot drive and started a restore (using disk utility from startup disk). The restore started fine and ran a while but then "stalled." The "progress" bar stopped and the system just kept "hitting" the Utility DVD install disk non-stop (as shown by disk access light).
Now when I try again, I immediately get a "Restore Failure - Could not validate source - error 254"
The disk image being restored is on a hard drive. I copied it to another drive and tried again with the same result.
This is being done on an old G4 Tower, dual 1 GHz PPC under 10.5.8
    Comments?
(This won't kill me as all my data files are also on my MBP, I just don't want to have to reinstall all my apps, setups, etc.)

Yes, for my "real" machine (my Intel MBP) I have images, clones, and Time Machine Backups not to mention my data files written to DVD. I've got at least triplicate backup. This was a old machine I was setting up for a specific purpose. I'm not losing any data but I just didn't want to have to reload apps and such. But guess I have no alternative. Thanks for the tip. I had never used the "scan for restore option" before so I learned something. Usually I just trust my multiple backup method so if one source is bad, no big deal. Thanks baltwo!

  • Disk Utility: Restore Failure-Source image needs to be scanned for restore.

    Hello guys,
I have a .dmg (source image) that I have created from a DVD by myself (read-only format).
I am trying to restore it to a destination and a Restore Failure notification pops-up as follow:
    "Restore Failure
Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore"
I am quite new to Mac. Half of the time, I don't really know what I am doing - but just relying on the 'Help Menu', some research for guides on the internet and most of all read-on most of the posting here in the Apple Forum for what I want to do or might have encountered. Lastly to hopefully also speak the Mac language. For example - What's a disk image? What a .dmg? What's a source image? and etc. ~Lost~
So for this case, I am totally lost as I can't seems to understand what does the Restore Failure notification mean at all as I quote above. What does it mean by the Source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore? What do I do from there? How do I scanned my source image? Is there a steps that I miss out while creating .dmg from the DVD?
Could not find any scan information? What scan information? Where do I go to asked for scan information?
I am so lost that I don't even know the right question to ask or begin with.
I know what I want to do and believe it can be done with Mac. But I just doesn't seems to understand the concept of how it really works yet but to just follow blindly throughout the guides.
So please help me if possible.
    Thank you in advance.
    Best Regards,
    Jon Gan

    Hi,
If you open Disk Utility, select the Image in the disk util sidebar, and click on Images > Scan for restore... in the menu bar, it will take care of it for you. After that you can perform a restore as you were trying to do.
They do this so that disk util can verify your data after the restore to make sure it copied exactly.

  • Using DD in terminal or Restore in Disk Utility gives me 'Resource Busy' er

Hello, I'm trying to restore an old Hard Drive image OS.dmg to a usb hard drive that I have.
    I'm using the command:
    dd if=/Users/Shared/OS.dmg of=/dev/disk5 bs=1m
    And I'm getting
    dd: /dev/disk5: Resource busy
What would cause this error? I'm not sure why it's "busy"
    Thanks
    Josh
PS.. I get the exact same thing when i try to do it in DiskUtility

Try using the lsof command to list the open files on /dev/disk5.
Is /disk5 enough of a description? It does not match what the df command in Terminal would show, which specifies both a device and a partition on the device.

  • Time Machine Backups external drive developed problem which the disk repair utility cannot fix, so suggested reformat. I can't reformat because the "Resource Busy". How can I reformat this drive?

My Western Digital external hard drive which I use as a Time Machine Backup stopped working. I tried repairing the disk using the Disk Utility program, but got the message that the utility can't repair the disk and to erase and reformat the disk. When I try that, I get the message the operation can't be completed because "Resource Busy", even though Time Machine is turned off. Any suggestions for repairing the drive/disk?
    Thank you.

  • Unable to add partition on raid array, device or resource busy.

    Greetings,
I want to be able to create a disk image of a software raid of one of my arch box.
I'm able to create my image with G4U successfully. I'm also able to restore my image without error on my new box.
When my system boot up, I make sure that my raid array are up by doing cat /proc/mdstat.
I can see that md1 and md2 are 2 of 2 and active raid 1. But, when I look at md0 this is what I got:
    md0 : active raid1 sdb3[1]
               6289344 blocks [2/1] [_/U]
I try to add the partition sda3 to md0 array with this command:
    mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --add /dev/sda3
The output of this command give me this :
mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sda3: Device or resource busy.
It seems that this error only occurs on /dev/md0 (/) array. I'm 100% sure that both, my image and my drive (vmware hdd) are good.
    This is my partition table:
    /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 = /boot (md1) 100MB
    /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 = swap (md2) 2048MB
    /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3 = / (md0) 8GB
I have also tried the image creation with Acronis... same error.

    I solved my issue.
    My menu.lst was wrong..
    kernel /kernel26 root=/dev/md0 ro
I should add this to my menu.lst:
    kernel /kernel26 root=/dev/md0 ro  md=0,/dev/sda3,/dev/sdb3
    Now it work.
I followed the archlinux raid guide who's telling this:
Nowadays (2009.02), with the mdadm hook in the initrd it it no longer necessary to add kernel parameters concerning the RAID array(s).
Which is wrong because my distro is 2009.02, if someone can add a note to the wiki it can be usefull.
    Thanks for your support

  • Resource Busy When Trying to Image Macbook Airs

I've gotten myself into something of a dilemma. I have two MacBook Airs both running Lion, one that is set up as I want and one that hasn't been used yet. I've made an image file of the first computer and want to use it to "repair" the second.
So I was going along with the Disk Utility (definitely using the Migration Assistant in the future for other laptops but right now I just want to get out of the mess I've made of this first attempt) and I erased the data on the second drive. When I went to restore it, however, I run into issues.
I get to the restore tab of the Disk Utility and can see the second Air connected via thunderbolt cable so I drag that to the destination and drag the image file I have on the first Air's desktop to the source. At this point I have booted the second Air while holding T and just see the dancing Thunderbolt icon on the screen.
Anyway, I hit restore and confirm that I want to erase and replace, enter my password, but then I am told that Disk Utility has to scan the "disk image" before it can restore. I press Scan Disk Image and get the error: Unable to scan Macintosh HD (Resource busy). I've tried unmounting the drive and repeating those steps but I just get the same error.
How can I get myself out of this mess? The second Air is just empty now and it does not have a CD drive to boot from an OS CD (which I don't have anyway). I just want to restore it using the image on the first Air. How can I get around this resource busy error?
    Thanks a bunch!

I found the answer here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1215748 Thought I'd share it here.
The key is that you insure that the SOURCE image is the one selected on the left hand side NOT the destination, prior to clicking Restore.
    1. Select Image as Source
    2. Set correct Destination
    3. Insure the SOURCE image is selected on the left hand side
    4. Click Restore.
    5. Select Scan when prompted
    6. Success (hopefully)
    Hope this helps

  • Restore failure.

    Hi Everyone,
I am trying to restore an image using disk utility, but it keeps telling me "restore failure could not mount source image". I tried to copy the image and use it from another drive, but the same thing happened again. What I am trying to do is to make a partition on my drive, it says "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.".
    Could you please help me,
    Regards,
    MHBA

    Hello Lisa,
    Welcome to the forums.
If you have a backup file saved to your computer then there would be no issue in doing a wipe of your device and they restoring this backup file.

  • "Resource Busy" error during image creation, using disk utility when booting up from installation DVD

Hi all, first post to this community, wish all well
I have a MBP which is more than three years old, installed with OSX Leopard 10.6. Recently the MBP failed to to start and I tried to follow some articles online, including some from this community, to repair my disk, and more importantly, to backup data on the startup disk. But it does not work quite well so I try to seek some help here.
What I have done is to bootup with the installation DVD, try to verify and repair the disk using disk utility, which tells me it can't repair and recommend to backup, erase and reinstall. Am fine with this recommendation but now the problem is on the backup part. There are two partitons on this 500GB hitachi SATA disk. One is 300G which is for OSX itself, and the other 200G was partitioned for Time Machine. The repair failure is on the OSX partition which contains most of the recent data that I want to backup/restore. And unfortunately the Time Machine backup was stopped about two month ago, for some stupid decision I have made , while I am hoping to recover some data for the past month.
Currently the SMART status of the whole disk is verified, the OSX partition is unmounted with no details in the Available, Used, Number of Files, etc. From what I have researched (correct me if I am wrong), I highlight the OSX partition from the list on the left, click 'New Image' button on top, and select the destination to try to create an image of the current partition. But regardless of my desintation (Time Machine partition, or external USB drive), the imaging process always failed with Resource Busy error. Some online search suggest that the partition must be in unmount status but seems it does not apply to this case.
Would be really appreciated if anyone can give me some advice on what's the 'resource busy' error mean, how to backup the OSX partition, or what are the other possible alternatives.

Very poor idea to keep the Time Machine backup file on the internal hard drive. They should always be put on an external drive. As when the internal fails you lose everything. Which is what I suspect has happened.
More then likely your internal drive is failing. the only options to get a new internal drive and a SATA to USB adapter. Install the new drive inside the system abd install OS X on it. Then once that is finished and you are booting from it connect the old drive to the system with the SATA to USB adapter and copy your files off the old drive. That is if you can.

  • Resource busy time out oracle message - Concurrency and Locks

I have a requirement to generate gapless invoice and receipt number in our application. so i have currently used the below approach.
    a. created table with a column to hold the invoice and receipt number sequence value.
    b. whenever transaction gets succeed. i will lock the table which holds the invoice number and receipt number inorder to avoid the sequential number slipages.
    Issue
    1. since the application belongs to online payment through portal by customers, when concurrent users trying to pay and while generating receipt number's, i am facing with "resource busy time out" message frequently. Here i noticed when user1 locks the table to access the receipt number value and session is not committed or rollback and another session user2 trying to access the same resource, in this scenario i am facing this error.
Frequency of encountering this error is low, but customer was telling us this error is show stopper and affects normal business.
Is there any alternative solution or method can be applied to overcome this problem?

Engage the business and inquire WHY this "requirement" exists. I have personally never seen an audit requirement wherein invoices MUST be devoid of gaps (that's not to say they do not exist, just that I've never seen one
They certainly must be unique, but that's what a sequence will do for you. If the business absolutely needs gapless information, then they will have to be willing to pay the price which is going to be longer transaction times (as requests queue in a busy system to get this sought after gapless resource). Your job is to explain this to them ... nothing comes without a cost.
The only thing you can really do (assuming you engage the business and the requirement doesn't change) is ensure the transactions are designed in such a manner that
    1) they complete as fast as possible AND that the locking is done at the latest possible stage of the transaction
    2) there is no user interaction (you cannot allow the users a "review" screen of any sort ... because users get silly sometimes and go for a coffee while reviewing things)

  • 'screen' no longer works in Yosemite - Resource Busy

For many years I have used USB serial devices to connect to external machines, using commands like
    $ screen /dev/tty.usbserial-FTFZXCV 115200
Since the upgrade to Yosemite, this no longer works.  The screen commands give an error
'screen cannot open /dev/tty.usbserial-FTFZXCV for R/W - Resource Busy'
There was a similar question from April but that talked about using lost to identify an orphan session.
$ lsof | grep usbserial   # no output
$ pgrep screen # no output.
    The permission seems sensible:
    $ ls -l /dev/tty.*

  • Getting "resource busy" when trying to copy from an external USB drive

Hi, I have an external (Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1.5TB) USB drive attached to my MacBook Pro (2009) running 10.6. I am trying to copy the files back to my laptop. After this happens, when I do "ls /Volumes/MyDriveName" I get zero results, nothing. I cannot unmount or eject the USB drive. I have to physically kill power to it, and then plug it back in. Then my MBP recognizes it again, and I can work with it for a short time before I hit this problem again. Copying some files works, but mostly they do not. I hope I have not lost these files.
I ran Disk Utility, and it can't do anything with this drive... it keeps saying it cannot unmount it.
Oddly, I can "ls" every file in every directory on this drive after I reconnect it (i.e. until the problem happens). So it seems like my data is sort of there, at least the directory is.
Is there something more robust than Disk Utility that I can try? Any idea why I cannot eject the disk? And especially, what this "Resource busy" and "in use" message is about? This is coming straight after a reboot, and it only happens for SOME files, so it's not likely to be an obvious usage by some open app.

Hmm, check out this program http://www.hamsoftengineering.com/products/wkm/wkm.html ... it might lead to some more clues. It seems like as soon as you plug it in, the system latches onto it. I'm guessing because it's an iMovie file, which OS X scans for, so all applications have the ability to grab that media that it's messing things up.
Suggestions...copy those files, and rename them.
Check out the app above to see what's holding onto the files.
Check me out over at www.itarsenal.com for some remote control support on the house if you still need help.

    Please help.

    Hello Paul,
If you are connect via VPN and can ping the routers LAN IP but not the internal resources there are two main reasons for this symptom.
1- Default gateway of those clients pointing to a different router other than the QVPN router.
2- OS' firewall or 3rd party firewall blocking subnets other than its own.
