Restoring Database from tape to another server

Hi
What are the environment changes or other related changes that need to be made if we have to restore an oracle database to another server.
Like, we have one Oracle database on linux server XYZ and it is backed up to Tape using RMAN. And we need to restore the same database to server ABC.Do we need to modify any environment variables and such so that restore is done ? Or does it work straight away in this different server too ?

Hello,
Please have a look into the document 372996.1 MOS.
and the thread: http://www.dbasupport.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56236
Good luck!

    Ah, well, maybe with SBS it is an option (no idea, never used that
    product) and if it's a single-server tree you at least shouldn't be
    corrupting your tree by doing so but the hardest part will be your backup.
    If it does that, go for it but if not you'll need to recreate the tree or
    find another backup. If you ever ran `dsrepair -rc` you may have a backup
    in sys:/system/dsr_dib as I recall that can be restored by Novell.
    Good luck.

  • Changing CMS and Audit Repository databases from Oracle to SQl server 2008

    Hi guys,
      We have a Business Objects Dev environment which was installed with Oracle 10g database for CMS and Audit Repository.
    Our database team now decided to change the CMS and Audit databases of Dev BOE from Oracle to  SQL server 2008.
    What is the ideal way to achieve this? I'm concerned because the old DB is Oracle and the new one would be SQL server.
    Earlier, I have changed CMS database from one to another by stopping SIA , taking the backup of old DB into new and changing it in the Update Databse option. But in that case both old and new CMS databses were on SQL server 2005.
    Thanks,
    Ganga

    Denise,
      Thanks for the solution.
    We have done Windows AD and SAP integration on the Dev BOE. Will there be any issue with those after the DB change. I am guessing there won't be, but just want to confirm. Please reply.
      Also, we need to stop the old SIA and start using the new SIA after the step two is done right?

  • Resore the database from Tape to a new directory

    Hi
    can i use rman to resore the database from Tape to a new directory (not the database directories)
    is that will work
    run{
    allocate channel.....
    restore database to 'path';}
    Thanks for any contribution

    This will not work.
    You need to code
    set newname
    commands in your rman script.
    The syntax is
    set newname <filenumber> to '<filename>'
    As far as I recall this is a scenario which is documented in the RMAN documentation for your unknown version of the database.

  • How can i Migrate a database from DB2 to SQL Server 2008r2.

    Hi Gurus,
    Kindly help me letting me know the process for migrating the database from DB2 to SQL Server.
    1) Is there any way to migrate a database from DB2 to SqlServer. (My assumption is we can not migrate database, if wrong correct me gurus).
    2) Or we can only transfer data from that DB2 database to SQL Server (Using SSIS packages).
    Please help me knowing the process to migrate the data from DB2 server to MSSQL server. Even am reading the documents available in the web.
    Thanks in advance.. :)

    Microsoft provide a migration assistant for DB2 to SQL Server:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=45296
    SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) is a free supported tool from Microsoft that simplifies database migration process from DB2 to SQL Server and Azure SQL DB. SSMA automates all aspects of migration including migration assessment analysis, schema and

  • Hard disk crashed, restored data from tape backup, Firefox not showing bookmarks. What is the location of bookmarks & favourites to ensure I have restored the correct file?

    Hard disk crashed (XP), restored files from tape backup using Retrospect onto new Windows 7 laptop. Started up Mozilla after restore but bookmarks and favourites are missing.
    I still have access to the backup tape and files. I was wondering whether the bookmarks are kept anywhere special other than the Mozilla program file that I restored.

  • Database Restore & Recovery from tape

    Hi Fellows
    I'm about to attempt a recovery from backup tape to a test server, as a 'tape recovery' test. The files I've marked for recovery include (directories including all sub-tree);
    Datafiles directory
    $ORACLE_HOME/sid/ directory where the sid is the database sid
    Control Files
    adump, Bdump, cdump and udump directories
    Archivelogs directory
    Flashrecovery area directory
    Redo logs directory
    initfile and spfile
    With these files recovered (from one point in time), and the dbconsole shut down prior to restore (for the sid) should the database be able to startup afterwards? Is there any other actions I should make? Thanks, David

    Thanks for your responses Alok and Santosh
    I'm pretty sure the files I have selected should be able to recover the database. The recovery, I think is rightly said, can only be done within Oracle. I'll look into a test of RMAN (I know it should be better) recovery once I've tested this as a 'straight from tape' recovery.
    Thanks again, David
    Alok and Santosh
    I thought I'd put this in as 'aftermath' of the attempted recovery;
    I had the server team restore the files stated (basically everything - redo, archivelogs, datafile, controlfiles, init and sp files, even the dump files) - and repalced them into directories made the same as the other server. When I started it, I was able to go into a 'Oracle Suggested' full database recovery, which was successful. I then checked the expdp dump files, 1 taken at the same time of backup as rman - and one directly after the restore), and compared rows - exactly the same. So appears to have worked.
    Many thanks, David

  • Restore and recover Oracle 10g database from tape.

    I have a very basic question for restore and recover Oracle 10g database. Our envirnment settings are:
    Oracle 10g on Unix, daily database and archivelog backup to Vista NetBackup server. Retention policy is 2. Old backup files are copied from NetBackup server to the tape for record keeping.
    I want to restore a database to a point in time. Because our retention policy is setup to 2. The backup files I need have been copied to the tape. So I should ask SYSTEM ADMIN to copy the backup files back to NetBackup server disk or I can ask him to copy backup files to the Unix server that host my Oracle 10g database. Then I can use Rman to do restore and recover. Is this doable? I know normal procedure is to copy backup files I need back to NetBackup server disk, not directly back to database server. Please put your comments here as early as better. I do appreciate your kind help.

    Are you using catalog or nocatalog?
    If the backup information is out of retention, Catalog them again also in netbackup.
    So that you can able to restore database directly without copying those files to host.

  • How to backup database using RMAN on another server's tape?

    Dear All,
    Please give me an advise what parameters I should set up in RMAN to backup database on another server's tape.
    Best wishies,
    Givi

    I am connected to the database server from the server
    where I have tape, but Rman is searching tape on
    database server.I am not sure I understabd the above statement, but at the Operating System Level, you must ensure that from the Server you are running RMAN, it is configured to see the Tape Drive of the other Server. Once the Remote Tape is mounted with any name (say sbt) on the Local Server (however it is done with), then RMAN can configure the channels to use it.
    If you cannot get this access at the Operating System Level, then do not bother trying RMAN to access it.

  • SQL Server 2012 restoring database from backup file

    Hi All,
    1. I was restoring the database from PROD box to DEV box with the deferent name.
    For Ex: Both PROD and DEV boxes are having "A" database. Now I am refreshing database"A" from PROD bot to DEV box with name "B". Now while restoring in SQL server 2012 I used GUI and took database name as "A" by default.
    by mistake I executed the request. before completing I notice that "A" database in DEV Box went to restoring mode.
    Now, in middle I stopped the query but still I am seeing database "A" is in restoring state.
    Please guide me is there any way to bring database online with current data?

  • RMAN error when restoring controlfile from tape

    Hi,
    We have a Production database with instance name PROD.
    We use Symantec Netbackup software to backup this database to tape library.
    We want to test some recovery scenarios on a test server. So we want to restore the production backups from Tape to this test server.
    We did the following:
    Cloned the ORACLE Home to the Test Server.
    Changed the db_name parameter to PROD and also set ORACLE_SID to PROD.
    then we connected to RMAN and ran the following command to restore the control files:
    RMAN> run {
    set dbid 4155532403
    set controlfile autobackup format for device type 'sbt_type' to '%F';
    set until time "to_date('16/12/2012:10:13:37','dd/mm/yyyy:hh24:mi:ss')";
    allocate channel t1 device type 'sbt_tape';
    SEND 'NB_ORA_SERV=riysvbkp-001,NB_ORA_CLIENT=lh-erp';
    restore controlfile to '/testerp/dbexec/tmp/cf1.ctl' from autobackup;
    executing command: SET DBID
    database name is "PROD" and DBID is 4155532403
    executing command: SET CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT
    executing command: SET until clause
    allocated channel: t1
    channel t1: SID=171 device type=SBT_TAPE

    Here you can see that AUTOBACKUP is found but RMAN is unable to process the backup piece.
    I am not able to see any errors in the log files. Please advise.
    Thanks,

  • Restore essbase.sec file to another server

    Dear all,
    I've restored several databases from our Develop server to another server.
    But can I just copy security file to that server?
    My concern is they have different numbers of app/db, will the security file work?
    if it doesnt work, how can I recover the security file of a certain database?
    Thank you in advance for your help!!

    Singlejoe,
    You are going to have problems if you don't match up the app/dbs on your target server.
    Assuming that your source dev server has more databases than the target, before you copy over, create dummy apps/dbs on the target. Stop Essbase, and backup your to-be-replaced Essbase.sec. (A just-in-case copy to retain whatever security, filters, etc. you may have).
    If you have more/different apps/dbs on your target, I would archive them (full backup to text, copy all relevant artifacts, etc.) and then delete. Then follow the paragraph above. The point is to make the app/db folders look exactly the same to Essbase.sec.
    Then copy over your source Essbase.sec to your target, delete the dummy apps/dbs and you should be good to go.

  • Restore controlfile from tape backup without autobackup setting on

    I am testing a scenraio of restoring control file if we loose all control files.
    My RMAN settings for CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP is OFF. But, I have taken a backup of controlfile using 'BACKUP CURRENT CONTROL FILE' .
    When I tried to restore control file. I am receiving following error:
    RMAN> run {
    2> allocate channel c101 type sbt_tape;
    3> restore controlfile ;
    4> }
    allocated channel: c101

    RMAN-06563: control file or SPFILE must be restored using FROM AUTOBACKUP
    My question is, How can I restore control file from tape backup without CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP setting ON.
    It sounds like, There is no way we can restore control file from tape backup if you've not set the CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP is ON.
    Please advice

    When all controlfiles are lost and a recovery catalog is NOT used, RMAN has no information , where to find the controlfile backup. It's not enough to specify the channel, such a channel could hold many different backups from many different databases. You have tell , which database and which backupset. Modify your run block:
    SET DBID <DBID of the database,for which you want to restore the controlfile>;
    RESTORE CONTROLFILE FROM <name_of_backupiece_which_contains_the_controlfile backup>';

  • Restore backupsets from tape.

    Hi,
    We are on a 2 node RAC cluster, ASM. We run backups through rman.
    Scenerio:
    Rman backup runs and create backupsets in ASM diskgroup. We again run a tape backup to backup the backupsets to tape and delete the backupset from disk.
    My question:
    How can i restore the backupsets back to disk, if i have to restore a database?
    I use the following to backup the backupsets to tape:
    backup backupset completed before 'sysdate-2' delete input
    But i'm not sure of what command to use to restore the backupsets back from tape to disk if i need to restore the database? Any help appriciated.
    Thanks
    Karthik

    Hi,
    You are keeping latest backups on disk and in case of any Disk failure, when you run RESTORE/RECOVER it will use the backups from disk.
    In case if RMAN need more files then automatically restores needed archived logs from tape to disk during recovery.
    Please keep backups in a separate ASM diskgroup, which should not contain active database files such as datafiles, control files, and online redo logs.
