Restoring IPhoto 09 from backed up library files

Hiya, got a bit of a problem on my hands, as a new mac user i am still getting to grips with a few of the basics.
I have had to reinstall OSX Leopard recently after having problems during upgrade from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7, all that is now sorted and I have my OS working fine at 10.5.7.
Before reinstalling the OS I used target disk mode to create a back up of my library files so that i could set up my programs as they were, I have used this for safari and is working as it used to =]
Which library files will i need to replace to restore my IPhoto library and faces etc...?
Thanks in advance people =]

You need to restore the iPhoto Library. Put it back in the Pictures Folder.
The Library contains all the data - photos, albums, events, faces, places etc.

  • How to restore Mail Inbox from backed up Library: Mail folder?

I deleted my email account and recreated it to attempt to resolve some bizarre behavior with the Trash folder. Prior to deleting the account, I copied my Library:Mail and Library:Mail Downloads folders to my desktop.
I would like to restore the 100+ emails from my Inbox only, as all my other folders remained intact and appear to be fine. Could someone please refer me to an article or offer instructions to copy back to correct file to refill my inbox?
    I am on a MacBook Pro OS X (10.5.5) with Mail 3.5.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I appreciate your rapid response. So if I understand you correctly, I use this restore/import feature and it will return all my inbox messages, as well as creating duplicates of all my Mailboxes and those emails?
What if I delete the folder files from my backup, so all it will have to restore are the emails in the inbox? In the Mail folder, there is a Mailboxes subfolder containing folders and .mbox files for each of my Mail folders (which remained intact and do not need restored).
Wouldn't it make since if I move the saved Mailboxes folder to another location on my Desktop, the import feature will not see them and only restore the inbox? I just dont want to corrupt any folders and have to back up and restore and delete/add my mail account again?
    What do you think?
    Thank you,

  • How do I import playlists from an old library file?

How do I import playlists from an old library file?
I have a new computer and it has the music files completely reorganized from my last computer so I can't just drop in my old library files and have it work. Basically, I'm hoping there is some way to recover my old playlists from my old backed up copy of my music library without recreating my old jumbled file paths and just using my old library.

Backup the current passwords with the Password Exporter extension.
Then you can re-import them afterward.
For restoring the names and passwords from Firefox 3.5.x and later you need the file signons.sqlite from the old profile.
You also need the corresponding file [http://kb.mozillazine.org/key3.db key3.db] that stores the encryption key in addition to the signons file.
    Password Exporter: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/2848
    See also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Password_Manager#Backing_up_and_restoring_passwords
For the bookmarks to need to do something similar unless you have a HTML backup of the old bookmarks because restoring a JSON backup replaces all current bookmarks.
If you need to preserve current bookmarks then you can export your bookmarks in Firefox to an HTML file and import that file afterward.
Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Export HTML & Import HTML > From File
Another possibility is to use the clipboard to store selected bookmarks before restoring a JSON backup (e.g. All Bookmarks: Ctrl + A and Ctrl + C).
You can paste the bookmarks from the clipboard back after you have restored a JSON backup.
That will preserve all data including tags and annotations, but you should create an HTML backup to be safe.

  • Restore Thunderbird Profile from Backed Up Computer

One of my computers needs to be reset to default factory settings. I have a back up of the files on the computer including Thunderbird data including the profile. However, I'm not sure how to restore my mom's profile to the newly reset computer. I know there's a service called Moz Backup but I can't even start the computer to use the program. All I have is the folders and files from the computer. Is it even possible to restore the profile from the folders and files on the hard drive?

Of course it is. Create a new profile and copy the old one over it.

Nothing happened and I still don't have the old emails. Am I doing something wrong here?

  • I restored my bookmarks from a resent .json file, but one folder is now empty and one is missing.

    Hi,
Because of reasons my computer needed to be refreshed. My old firefox profile folder was saved though, and with that the bookmarkbackups. As the title says I restored my bookmarks from a resent .json file, but one folder (containing probably about a hundred bookmarks) is now empty and one other is missing completely.
In some places I have a 5 levels deep folder structure for my bookmarks, but since the folders missing are from different levels I don't think this is the problem.
The now empty folder contained six or seven other folders, that in turn contained a lot of bookmarks with titles including non-alphanumerical characters. †?|&*()<-/., to be precise. However, if I restore a very old .json (from september 2013) the folders are present and contain the mentioned bookmarks - albeit much fewer, since the file is old. A few other bookmarks still present also contain the mentioned characters, so this is probably not the problem either.
The folder that is completely missing just contained a lot of bookmarks that were to be sorted.
When opening the more recent .json files (I have a whole month of automatic backups to choose from) in the firefox scratchpad it would seem that the bookmarks are missing alltogether, so I suppose that there is not much to do about it (please correct me if I'm wrong), but I definitely want to report the bug.
Is there anything at all to do about it?
    Thanks,
    Hanna

If the bookmarks aren't present in the JSON backup then it is likely that you got a corrupted places.sqlite file at some time that caused the backup not working properly.
Did you try all the backups?
Note that the xxxx part of the bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx.json file name shows the number of bookmarks in the file.

Because it says it's incompatible when it can't be, I got hope. I get error messages all the time with my iPod and iPhone that it cannot sync and that 'this device is not capapble of connecting to iTunes' stuff. I literally forget that happened, plug it in again and it works, I later realize that iTunes made a mistake, they do that.

If it says wrong password, evidently what you're typing isn't it. Remember it is CaSe SenSiTiVe, a zero is not an Oh, a one is not the letter l and spaces count.
And make sure you're typing in the same language keyboard it was originally typed in.

  • Restoring iPhoto contents from an external hard drive results in duplicates! Please help!

    Hi Folks,
I have an iMac 2.8Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo computer that had it's DVD fried and I gave it to Apple to fix it. They did and they also upgraded me to the Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4. I am not sure if I am a fan of this OS but that's a different story. I had backed up everything to an external hardrive (not using time Machine). The external drive is a Hitachi and came with it's own back-up software for the Mac. I was able to restore everything except iPhoto properly. By the time I specified the directory that contained my library information, I ended up getting duplicates events/pictures of EVERYTHING to the point where it has eaten up more than 100GB of my 350GB hard-drive
Now I have been looking through all of the duplicate events that iPhoto created, I see that most of them are thumbnails. I also downloaded photosweeper Lite to find duplicate pictures and that didn't help. I am a Unix hack and could write some sort of script to compare the fine names etc but I know that's not a practice that's encouraged and I really don't have the time to putz with it.
So can you please let me know how can I re-restore iPhoto properly please given what was in the back-up hardware? Here is what the directory structure looks like in the external drive:

Sorry to hear of your difficulties.
Simply copy the iPhoto Library Folder from the back up to the Pictures Folder on the MBP and launch iPhoto. It will do the rest.
Alternatively, you can leave the library where it is and hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the Library on the Back Up disk.

  • Restore iPhoto Librariy from Time Machine

After some problems I have removed my iPhoto Library from my MBP harddisk ! Now I would like to import the iPhoto Library File which I backupped with Time Machine. Everything goes well for a while but suddenly the backup stops and I get a screen which says I have no authorization to access the iPhoto Library !? Anyone knows what this means ? Tnx.

Are you using the Restore button in Time Machine to recover your library or trying to copy it via the Finder? Here's how it should work:
1 - open your Pictures folder.
2 - enter Time Machine and go back to the most current date that has the library in the Pictures folder.
3- select the iPhoto Library and click the Restore buttonl
That's it. If that's what you're doing and still get the authorization message you need to post your problem in the Time Machine forum.

  • Can't back up Library file

    Hi All,
Problem: I'm trying to create a backup of my Aperture Library file by simply doing a drag copy of it to an external drive. I get about 2/3 of the way done, when the copy process stops and I get an error that the process has stopped, due to a corrupt file. I get the same result copying to my internal back up, external back up and even doing a file copy on the same drive. I've now done the consistency check and rebuild the database, but there were no errors, so I'm assuming that I will get the same result as before. I'm trying the copy again any way, just to check. If this doesn't work, I see two next steps.
    1. Open the contents of the Library file, try the drag copy again. With the contents exposed, I think I may be able to find the offending file and get rid of it. I know this is dangerous, to muck around in the Library like this, will this work?
    2. Export my library, project by project, then rebuild (import) on to the new drive.
I guess my third option is to just trust that the Vault will work, but after my last experience, I wanted to look at all options.
    Thanks.
Background: I have had a bad run with hard drives lately and just after recovering from having a Samsung 1TB die (lots of hours to restore everything), I had my new WD Caviar Black 2TB start to act funny, with corrupt file issues etc. Here's my config, Mac Pro Quad G5, Mac OS 10.5.8 and Aperture 2.1.4. My current back up plan has been simply drag copies of my data to both an internal and external drives on a regular basis. Simple, yes but it has served me well until this latest bout of hard drive problems.
My short term plan is to get two new 2TB drives to raid in my system, with my external 2TB as a clone of my drive. That should hold me over, till my sales pick up and I can spend my savings on a new Intel Mac Pro with new OS and Aperture 3.
My current problem is getting fully updated copied of everything backed up. I've had some corrupt file issues, which stops the copy process and makes me hunt for the offending file. All that's done, except my Aperture Library. Yes, I have multiple copies of my Vault file, but in the process of rebuilding the last time, I learned that the Vault doesn't keep thumbnails and previews. I got uneasy about this process, when it took forever to rebuild thumbs and previews. It didn't seem like it was working, when I realized I had a copy of my Aperture Library, so I copied it over and everything was cool.

A few thoughts. First when you do the drag of the library file is Aperture closed? Don't know for sure if it would make a difference but it's probably a good thing to do.
Second have you done a disk verify of the volume your Aperture library is on? I would suggest you run disk utility and do a disk verify on this volume just to rule out the possibility of a bad sector.
Finally I would really advise against going into the Aperture library and mucking about unless you have a definite know good backup of the library. You could select all your projects at once and then export them all in one operation as a new library directly onto the external drive. The you could just open this new library in Aperture, no need to import anything.

  • How to restore iPhoto pictures from time machine

Knowing this:  " When using iPhoto ’11 (version 9.2 or later) and Time Machine with OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later), iPhoto no longer has the Browse Backups option. This means that instead of restoring specific photos within your iPhoto Library, you must restore your entire iPhoto Library."
I need to restore from the July 2012 backup iPhoto library a few photos, no more than 50, I guess I need some guidance on how to prevent my current iPhoto library to be overwritten with the contents of an old library, thus erasing all of the pictures I have taken since, that's 2 years ago.
Should I create a *new* iPhoto library, and restore it with the contents from the time machine? I suppose that once the *new*  has been restored then I can pick up the pictures and export these to my current library.
I need to be cautious as to how I can do this, I do not want to loose the thousands of pictures I have in my current library and would appreciate if what I intend to do will bring the results I want to have.
    Thanks

When you restore the library, use the "Restore to" function and not the "Restore". This will let you select a different folder, or if you do not have enough disk space, restore to a different disk. Then open the restored library by double clicking it and export the photos you need to restore.
Double click your current library to switch back to your current library and import the restored photos.

  • Iphoto can't read old library files after backup

    Hi there,
after a HD-Crash, a new HD, a new System and iLife5 I thought putting back the backuped iphoto library in the new iphoto 5 library should work. It doesn’t.
Any other usual image editing program is able to open the .jpg Files (which I extracted manually from the old library folder because I didn’t know anything about an extractor) but iphoto says that the files “may be an unrecognized file type or they may not contain valid data“.
    I’m talking about 8000 Pictures!
I tried to put them in manually by dragging some of them.
I tried to import them via the menu
I erased the preferences (that spotlight could find and some I remembered)
And I thought about the REV Drive I used for Backup.
    I heared about permission issues...
    Any Help out there?
    You’ll get a nice Pict!
    Thanks

    OK, Problem solved.
Today I decided to move the Backuped Folders to some other place.
And than I decided to try again to import them by dragging (again) single jpegs into the (virtual) Library in the iphoto Window.
It worked. I was surprized because that was nothing that I haven’t try before.
    BUT:
The Problem was that I did all the steps above by still having the Folders (I tried to import) in the new Library Folder.
    SO:
It is right what all the other users say: DON’T DO ANYTHING MANUALY WITH THE IPHOTO LIBRARY FOLDER. NOTHING!

  • How to re-create playlists from Windows iTune library file?

After importing my itunes library from a Windows 7 sledded HDD, I have all my music etc but no playlists.
The kb article that explains the importing of the library files (itl and .xml) give some warnings about doing this import.
I can see both the xml file and a number of recent itl files on the sledded drive.
Am I going to mess anything up by importing these? It's possible that some of the songs the playlists pointed to are no longer in iTunes (I deleted some beore the import). Is this going to cause a problem.
    Will this even work?

Assuming your relocated library is now at *Z:\iTunes Media*, for example, copy the library files that you restored onto drive C: (iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel & Album Artwork folder - ignore the .xml) into the parent of this folder, i.e. Z:\, then click the icon to launch iTunes and *immediately press and hold the SHIFT key* until presented with an option to choose or create a library. Choose the library at Z:\ - all should be well. If I guessed wrong just use your actual media folder & parent of that media folder as approptiate.

  • How to work so I can re-build from backed-up AVCHD files if I need.

Trying a new title to see if anyone can help.
I'm recording on an AVCHD card, and have two ways of capturing this to FCP and backing up.
    1) USB - Log and Transfer straight from the camera. Then copy the card contents to a spare usb drive for storage. (Been using this)
    2) Copy the card to the usb drive first, then Log and Transfer from the USB drive. (Going to use this)
Both methods produce media and edit ok.
But in the process the files are renamed - twice. First by Log and Transfer, when they are given whatever names I choose in the dialgue box, and then they are often further refined in the browser as I name clips in more detail while cutting.
The card itself is, of course, then cleared to make room for more shots.
    Now, this is my problem:
If I empty my FW scratch disc, as at some point I must, and then need to rebuild the project from the back-up usb drive, I have a problem.
If I try 'reconnect media', the name in the box is the one I gave the clip in the browser, but the name on the drive is still the one the camera generated. So when I 'locate' to the folder on the drive with the clips in, FCP just goes 'click.'
How do i recapture the media from the back-up usb drive? There should be a metadata link, but i don't know how to activate it.
In the old days we could re-digitise form tape (though I confess I can't remember the process now). Suely there is a way to rebuild the whole project, by telling FCP to go looking for the original source files onm the usb drive?
I've tried media manager, but nothing there that I can see.
I'm probably being dumb, but I'd appreciate some advice if anyone knows the answer.
I need to steer my workflow so that in future i can rebuild from back-up if I have to.
    Thanks
    Tom

Ah - I missed batch capture - thanks!.
The only problem is that it's only showing the media from a different project (the clips I captured today for a different programme, which is in a different folder on the same drive).
It's locked out so i can't navigate to the correct folder.
    Hmm
No - wait - got it now!
It was looking for some tapes, of which there were none in the project, but it's seen the error of it's ways.
    Many thanks!
