"And would I still be able to use my iPod with Mac even if it's Windows formatted?"
Yes. Macs are smart enough to be able to read and write to FAT32 formatted drives like a Windows iPod.
All future software updates would have to carried out on a Windows PC of course.

  • Can I remove iPod for Windows 2006-03-23 and 2006-06-28?

I have the latest update of iTunes installed on my PC. I'm trying to remove uneeded programs from my c drive. Is it safe to remove iPod for Windows 2006-03-23 and iPod for Windows 2006-06-28? If I removed them will it adversely affect the restoring of the iPod to factory settings or cause other problems?

The iPod updater is now integrated with iTunes so that you no longer need the standalone updaters each of which only delivered a particular version of the software. You can safely delete them, you'll find a few of the later ones are still available for download should you feel you need one. If you need to restore your iPod this can be done through iTunes: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings with iTunes 7

  • Ipod for Windows 2006-06-28 software installer fails

When I install the iPod utility for Windows, version 2006-06-28 (the current download), the install shield goes to 100% --- but then it reverts and deletes all the files it installs at the very end.
eventvwr tells me the last application event was:
"10:23:55 - Product: iPod for Windows 2006-06-28 -- Installation operation failed."
...and the second most recent event was:
"10:23:41 - Product: iPod for Windows 2006-06-28 -- Installation operation completed successfully."
Anyone know whats up with this?
PS - i had a similar problem with installing iTunes -- see this post for details on that...(reinstalling SP2 fixed the itunes installation error - http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2675547#2675547 )

  • Cant uninstall iPod for windows before Installing 7.0.2

Im using Windows XP. When I tried to install iTunes 7.0.2, it told me to uninstall previous iTunes software which I did. Then during installation is out up error message cant install until I uninstall previous iPod software. I have a program called iPod for Windows listed, but no matter what I do in the Delete Program it wont uninstall. Cant go any further. I also uninstalled Quicktime already from a related topic.
    Thanks in advance.

I finally gave up on iTunes 7. After uninstalling iTunes 7 and reinstalling iTunes 6, my iPod became more reliable and Windows XP would consistently mount it. Even though iTunes 7 is well conceived, I founded considerably slower than version 6. The slowdown becomes apparent when iTunes automatically starts with connecting an iPod. Syncing the iPod with a large music database will cause a slowdown; even a crash.
I do not believe that iTunes is multi-threading well on Windows XP. My other syncing applications do not put a strain on my computer’s resources. My computer handles Photoshop 10 megapixel processing and a 2 gigs bi-directional sync over my network without a hiccup. iTune grinds my computer to a halt with just a 2 gigs syncing to the iPod. In addition, all startup items were disabled in the troubleshooting process.
Even though features like the Summary tabs and view by album art appeal to me, I will hold off on the iTunes 7 upgrade in place of speed and reliability. I have a couple recommendations as well. These suggestions are for people with large music databases and a large number of hard drive and firewire devices.
TURN ON – Automatically update selected playlist only
TURN OFF – Open iTunes when this iPod is attached
If you restore you iPod, leave your computer alone for several hours while iTunes fills up a large capacity iPod. It took me all weekend to reload my iPod.

  • IPod for Windows *date*

I'm using windows XP and when I go to Add or Remove Programs on my computer theres a couple of items on the list that say
iPod for Windows 2005-03-23 163 MB
iPod for Windows 2005-11-17 113 MB
iPod for Windows 2006-03-23 163 MB
My computer is running really low on memory and I need every MB I can get!
So can I delete those items in the Add or Remove Programs without destroying my iPod?
Thanks for your help, and I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum.

So I can delete to of them? Just keep the recent one?
    Yes.
And your sure iTunes or myiPod wont get messed up???
These items contain firmware for the iPod, and are only used during an update or restore procedure. Both procedures are part of iTunes 7, and no standalone updater is needed.

  • Using first generation ipod for windows with my (older) mac

I have got an old unused 10gb ipod for windows, I beleive it is first generation. My computer meanwhile is an ibook with OS 9.1. Having gone through some really useful discussions on the topic of re-formatting ipods from windows to mac and vice-versa, I got the impression that I should download the ipod software updater. However, the software updater requires OS 10x or later. What can I do without having to upgrade the OS version (that I am otherwise quite happy with). Is is possible that my version of iTunes (v 1.1) has somethig to do with it?
Many thanks in advance for your kind assistance
    iBook   Mac OS 9.1.x

Thanks - iTunes now recognises the iPod, however version 1.3 of the software updater requires 9.21 (as you've said). Unfortunately I've only got 9.1 so it won't allow me to install. I get a message asking that I "select another volume". Are you aware of an earlier version of the software updater that works with OS 9.1? Presumably one did exist at some point.
Thanks again for your prompt reply - the prospect of getting the iPod actually working is quite exciting!

  • Reformatting an iPod for Windows with a Mac

I have a 4G iPod that I'd like to use as a portable HD. My school only has Windows machines, so it obviously needs to be Windows formatted. Unfortunately (heh) I only have access to Macs at home, and cannot use the school's PCs for this. Is there any way I can use my Mac to format my iPod for Windows?

Is there any way I can use my Mac to format my iPod for Windows?
    No.
You either need to reformat the iPod for Windows (using a Windows computer) as you previously stated or use some 3rd party software (which is not free) like MacDrive or XPlay2 that allow Mac formatted iPods to be used on the Windows platform.
Neither of these options would appear suitable given your circumstances.

  • How Do I Remove Older Versions of iPod for Windows

According to my Add/Remove Programs utility I have iPod for Windows versions 3.8, 4.3, and 4.7 installed on my PC. It appears that these older versions take up quite a bit of memory; however, I am hesitant to try to remove these older versions using this utility because I am afraid of wreaking some sort of irreversible havoc.
    Anybody know about this?

If you are running the latest version of iTunes (7.1.1.5), then I believe that removing these past versions of iPod software off your computer shouldn't be a problem at all (since now iTunes 7 does not need a standalone iPod updater application).
To install the latest version of iTunes, see this download page:
    Download iTunes - 7.1.1.5
Or, if you don't want to download the latest version of iTunes, just delete the previous versions of iPod software (like 3.8 and 4.3), and keep the latest one on your computer.

  • Older versions of Ipod for Windows

IN looking at my add/remove menu in windows, I have eight versions of "Ipod for Windows" with various dates. Is it safe to uninstall the older versions?

Yes it is, the iPod updater was integrated with iTunes when version 7 was released. As a back up, you might want to keep the last one in case you ever needed it but dispose of the rest, they are just taking up space.

  • Can't delete ipod for windows

I have an old ipod for windows (95) I just got a new ipod and when I tried to download and install version 7 it says Error 1921 service iopd service could not be changed. Verify that you have sufficent privlages to stop services. The same thing comes up when I try to delete the programme from the computer

okay. also try downloading and installing the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to remove the installation configuration of any entries called "ipod for windows [date]" or "ipod updater [date]" (except for the latest one).
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
(the reason for this is that it's crashing on files that are part of the iPod software installation configuration information ... if that's still on the PC after your uninstall of the various ipod software packages, it would be best to use cleanup to remove it.)

We have 4 ipods (1st gen nano, 2nd gen nano, 3rd gen nano, 1 shuffle) installed on computer. The last 3 being installed during last 6 months. Can we clear some of this software of our hard drive? without modifying any of our accounts.

  • Cannot uninstall previous versions of iPod for Windows

Over a year ago, my roommate gave me his old iPod. I installed it and iTunes and it worked fine until the battery on the iPod died and everything went nuts with the iPod - iTunes worked fine.
Now i have a new 30 gig video iPod, but I can't get anything working. I had to fight to update iTunes / Quicktime. Basically, I had to run:
    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver\8\Intel 32\IDriver.exe" -Embedding
from the command line. I don't know why, but it worked.
Now I have three versions of "iPod for Windows" installed. I click to uninstall any of them (from add / remove programs) and nothing happens.
I wouldn't care, but when I run iTunes with the iPod connected, it says "the software required for communicating with the ipod is not installed correctly."
I've tried everything I can see, but I'm suspicious the three versions of iPod for Windows are conflicting with each other and / or iTunes.
    Can anyone offer any help?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Deleting Older "iPod for Windows" in Add Remove Programs

I need to free up space on my hard drive and I have 3 different "iPod for Windows" listed that are taking up a lot of space. Can I delete the 2 older ones without compromising anything?

If you are getting that close on space for your boot drive, you should consider getting a larger internal drive or an external drive.
Generally, the accepted practice is to keep at least 10%-15% free space on the boot drive.

  • Deleting old versions of iPod for Windows

I have the following "iPod for Windows" programs on my hard drive and am wondering if I need all of them or if I can remove the oldest ones. Which can I safely remove?
    2005-11-17 115MB
    2006-01-10 115MB
    2006-03-23 165MB
    2006-06-28 232MB
    Thanks for the help.

If you have itunes 7, you can delete/remove all of them. If you want to be on the safe side, remove all but the most current one (aka 2006-06-28)
