Restoring RAC database to single instance
We run a 2-node RAC instance on 11g (Standard Edition) under SuSE 10 but our remote disaster recovery machine just runs a single instance.
Is it possible to restore from RMAN in this case and how should we go about it?
Thanks!
It is always possible to restore a RAC database backup to single instance. Infact restores are generally made to a single instance. After the restore we convert the database to RAC with required number of instances. Depending on the procedure you use the steps vary.

Another RMAN duplicate problem - RAC database to single instance
Hi,
I have a problem with the RMAN duplicate procedure and was hoping someone can help.
I would like to create a duplicate of our production RAC database on a separate, stand-alone, database server on another site. This duplicate will be used for intensive querying by another business unit who I don't want to have access to our production database.
My procedure goes like this:
1. Create a disk (not ASM) based backup of the datafiles and any archived redo logs:
"run {
allocate channel d1 type disk;
backup format '/u02/stage/df_t%t_s%s_p%p' database plus archivelog delete input;
release channel d1;
2. Tar and scp these files to the same location on the stand-alone database server.
3. In the meantime, work has been happening on the production database and further archived redo logs have been generated. I don't really care about these logs for the purposes of the duplicate however, I just want to duplicate to the point of the recent backup. To do this, I run the following SQL to determine the sequence number that I should be duplicating up to:
"select max(sequence#), thread# from v$archived_log where deleted='YES' group by thread#;"
4. Duplicate the production database to the stand-alone database (all the SQL Net stuff is working).
"run {
set until sequence (value returned by above SQL statement);
duplicate target database to XXX;
However, my problem arises because I don't know how to handle the fact that there are two threads. I understand that each thread relates to one of the RAC instances, I just don't know which one to specify for the duplicate. We have a database service which the client application connects through, and that service runs on on or other of the instances. Should I just care about the logs from the instance where the service is currently running?
Am I even approaching this is the correct way?
I look forward to any help that people may be able to offer.
Regards,
PhilHi Werner,
Thanks again for your help, there is still something wrong though. "list backup of archivelog all;" shows:

If I select current_scn from the production database, this gives me 569528258 which is closer to the value which RMAN is expecting to recover to than any of the archived redo logs.
Can you think what might be causing RMAN to try to recover to this value? and why does it appear to be ignoring the SET UNTIL SEQUENCE command?

Making single instance DB/ RAC Database with 2 instances
i created single instance DB , now i want to make it RAC DB with 2 instances. Need guidelines/Notes to do so.

Restore RAC database from non-RAC source - EBS R12.1.1
We have restored (PIT) a RAC database from a non-RAC (but ASM) source and I was wondering if that was a reasonable thing to do.
The reason I ask is that I seem to remember that in the upgrade to R12.1.1 the upgrade driver had a different list of jobs to do when the target was RAC vs when it was non-RAC... so is it possible the EBS R12.1.1 code is different for RAC (meaning we dont have the right code base in the DB since we restored a non-RAC source to a RAC destination)?
Disclaimer - I am NOT a DBA .. just trying to identify some potential problems we are troubleshooting.
Thanks in advance!
EBS R12.1.1
OEL 5
11gR2We have a RMAN back up of the non-RAC database that was restored and PIT recovered on the RAC database.Is it a full database backup?
The "code" base I am referring to is all the db stored objects for R12 EBS .. database compiled code.Restoring the RMAN backup on the target node is not enough. Have you run AutoConfig or postclone? Does your instance know that this is a a single instance and not a RAC one?
I am nervous that there may be alternate versions of the code to run in RAC vs non-RAC .. for instance I know that some of the ASCP jobs use DBMS PIPES and that can be tricky with RAC and Concurrent Manager.. And when we did the upgrade to R12, pointing it @ RAC generated more and different jobs than when it was not pointed @ RAC .. so SOMETHING was different according to the APPS ADPATCH/ADADMIN utilities.Please explain in details what is the purpose of doing this restore and what exactly you are trying to achieve. What cloning procedure you follow to refresh the target instance?
Thanks,

Restore Rac database in another cluster
Hello, I have a rac database in a clusterware compose by two node, for example node_1 and node_2, but now I need to pass the rac database from this original cluster to another that already exist.
I have two idea but I do not know if they are correct. One is create a template from my Rac database, and then in the second cluster create a rac database from it. The second idea is to make a copy of the pfile and level 0 RMAN backup in one node of the second cluster and then restore the database there.
Maybe twice idea are bad or maybe exist a better form to do it. I hope you can help me.Hi,
Well, I believe that I was not clear in my last explanation.
The hypothetical scenario is:
One database using ASM (database name orcl) , two inatances in two separated servers (nodes serv1 and serv2) and two instances ( orcl1 and orcl1).
In this scenary I lost everything and just have the backups of spfile, controlfile, database and archives.
So the steps to recovery is (using serv1):
1- Create the cluster (install clusteware, create CRS/Vdisk, create ASM instance)
2 - Just install the oracle files in all nodes serv1 and serv2, but don't create the instance orcl1 and orcl2.
3 - restore/recover spfile - rman
4 - restore/recover controlfile - rman
5 - restore/recover database with until clause - rman
After these steps the instance orcl1 will be restored by RMAN in the serv1 and the database orcl was created in the ASM.
But, plese correct if I'm wrong, the instance and database will not be registered in CRS (RMAN not register the instance).
So I need to registry the instance and database with srvctl, doing:
1 - create PFILE in serv1 for orcl1 (that point to SPFILE in ASM) and ORAPWD file.
2 - add the database orcl to CRS
3 - add the instance orcl1 to CRS
4 - add the dependency about ASM and orcl1 from the node serv1 (using srvclt)
But after this I have the instance orcl2 in serv2 to create.
Just the instance, because the binaries already installed and the database was already created.
TO complete I need to do the steps:
1 - Copy/Create PFILE for instance orcl2 in serv2
2 - add the instance orcl2 to CRS (using srvctl add instance)
3 - add the dependency about ASM instance (that exists in server2) and Instance orcl2 from the node serv2 (using srvctl)
4 - create PFILE and ORAPWD file.
The question is, RMAN will registry the instanci and database in CRS?
Another question, the RMAN will create PFILE and registry all instances of the original cluster?
I believe that not for two questions, correct?
Exists another path to restore/recover the RAC in this scenary?
Thanks. -
Switchover between primary RAC and standby single instance
Hello All,
I am using Oracle 11gR2.
I am trying to do a switch over between primary database (RAC 2 nodes) and physical standby (single instance)
If my Primary is single instance i was following the below steps:
On the standby
ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE USING CURRENT LOGFILE DISCONNECT;
On the primary database:
alter database commit to switchover to standby with session shutdown;
shutdown immediate;
startup nomount;
alter database mount standby database;
On the standby again:
alter database commit to switchover to primary WITH SESSION SHUTDOWN;
On the new standby:
ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE USING CURRENT LOGFILE DISCONNECT FROM SESSION;now, and since my primary is RAC when i am trying switch over I am getting the below error:
SQL> alter database commit to switchover to standby with session shutdown;
alter database commit to switchover to standby with session shutdown
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01105: mount is incompatible with mounts by other instancesPlus that when I want to apply the remaining steps (below step), should I do it on each instance alone? or is there anyway to do it using the srvctl command:
alter database mount standby database;Regards,Hi,
Since You are using 2 node RAc as primary, so for switchover operation you need to shutdown
one database instance( Suppose instance 2).
Suppose your node1:
hostname is dcpdb1
and node 2:
hostname is dcpdb2
and standby hostname is drpdb1
So follow this steps for switchover .
How to Switchover from Primary to Standby Database?
Process:
On the primary server, check the latest archived redo log and force a log switch.
*########### Login dcpdb1 as Oracle user #########*
SQL> SELECT sequence#, first_time, next_time

ORDER BY next_time;

Cluster with one 2 Node RAC and a Single Instance using ASM
Hi there,
i am not sure with one planned installation and want to ask, weather i am on the right track.
Some Facts:
Clusterware 11g
ASM 11g
Database 10gR2
AIX 5.3
3 Machines
2 Storages DS4700
My Plan
On Node 1 and Node 2 we install a RAC Database for an ERP Software
On Node 3 we install a single Instance Database for a Logistic Software
So i will install on all three Nodes Clusterware and an 3 Instances ASM - Cluster
I create 2 Diskgroups, one for the FRA and one for the Data, both on Luns on the DS4700
The RAC-Database and the Logistic-Database are using the same Diskgroups.
Is this the way to go for this circumstances?
The alternative is, as far as i see
Clusterware on an 3 Servers
One 2 Node ASM for the ERP Software
one Single Node ASM for the Logistcs
4 Diskgroups, because of the 2 ASM-Database 2 for the RAC and 2 for the Single Instance.
Please give me some hints, which way i should prefer.
My tendence is going to the first alternative. I like the idea to share the Diskgroups over more than on Database because of easy administration.
The load of the 2 Databases are completly different, the logistc software will nearly do nothing compared to the ERP Software, so this should'nt be a problem.
But maybe i oversee something, so please do not hesitate to tell me, i am completly wrong ;)
Thanks a lot
JörgChris Slattery wrote:
why clusterware on 3rd machine ?
I'd have separate DGs but that's just me.If you wish to install ASM you need OCS installed on the machine, even if it is just one node at all.
It is a kind of a dependency, no OCS, no ASM

Help required of creating Oracle RAC database having multiple instances
Hello Guys!
I want to create one database having 2 instances on Oracle 11g R1
I have 2 nodes in this Oracle RAC
Database name will be Val
and instance name on node 1 will be val1 and instance name on node 2 will be val2
Raw storage will be used, that is, without using automatic storage management or an Oracle Cluster File System
Can anyone help how to do that ?
ThanksHi,
Wonderful example thanks for the link.You're welcome :)
I'm little confused which option to choose in shared storage option of DBCA
i.e. Cluster File System or Raw devices?I suggest you to use ASM for you database storage requirement and select raw devices. oracle recommends to use ASM storage for sahred database.

Load balancing on rac database with single node appsTier
Hi,
Please advice me, I am working on to configure load balancing on appstier, following is my setup and steps I did so far.
Host name Services
Clelx062ptlge -- Rac 1 – only database
Clelx063ptlge -- Rac 2 – only database
Clelx042ptlge -- All apps services including concurrent managers
I have two R12 database(UDEV -- development & HRQA -- UAT), I only made changes in apps tier xml file of udev for some load balancing parameters, following are the changes I did.
*<TWO_TASK oa_var="s_tools_twotask" osd="unix"> udev_806_BALANCE </TWO_TASK>*
*<CP_TWOTASK oa_var="s_cp_twotask" customized="yes">udev_806_BALANCE</CP_TWOTASK>*
*<TWO_TASK oa_var="s_weboh_twotask" osd="unix"> udev_BALANCE </TWO_TASK>*
I changed the values from "UDEV" to given above value. After the above change I ran autoconfig. Then Concurrent managers and forms services are not automatically getting failover to second database node, I need to bounce services to fail it back to other available Rac node. Please note that we have only one appsTier
Thanks,
Tanveer Mohammed.Hi,
Yes, i have checked the doc referenced, and already did the steps given in the doc. Also i did all the steps given into ID 388577.1 but still Concurrent managers and forms services are not automatically getting failover to second database node, I need to bounce services to fail it back to other available Rac node.
Please advice...

Primary database is RAC and Physical standby is single instance
Hello All,
I am using Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3 as primary database, we are going to start using Oracle data guard.
So I am designing my infrastructure and planing to use Oracle 11.2.0.3 Single instance as my physical stand by database.
My question is it feasible to have my standby database as single instance while the primary is RAC?
is it feasible to build my Oracle single instance standby database from the RMAN backup of the RAC primary database?
Is there any restrictions (or any points to be taken into consideration) since my primary database is RAC while the physical standby is Oracle single instance?
in the below link
[http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28294/concepts.htm#i1039416]
it was mentioned that primary can be RAC or single and same for standby, but my question is it feasible to have primary as RAC while standby as single instance? or it should be like each others?
The primary database can be either a single-instance Oracle database or an Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) database.
Similar to a primary database, a standby database can be either a single-instance Oracle database or an Oracle RAC database.Regards,My question is it feasible to have my standby database as single instance while the primary is RAC?Yes...quite a common setup.
is it feasible to build my Oracle single instance standby database from the RMAN backup of the RAC primary database?Yes.
Is there any restrictions (or any points to be taken into consideration) since my primary database is RAC while the physical standby is Oracle single instance?No show stoppers. -
Data guard performance problem (rac to single instance)
i have a table it has GPS data, and gps table has too many data, 5 millions,
iam using RAC (2 nodes 11gr2). standby database is single instance data guard,
single instance database (standby)'s hardware cpu is lower than RAC machines. rac nodes have (15k) disks, standby has (7200rpm),
so i dont want to use GPS tables on data guard system, i dont want to run GPS table's DML commands (delete, insert), i think it may increase performance,
is it posible? what is your advise?
any feedback makes me happy,
best regardsit's not possible with data guard, but you can use streams or golgengate for this purpose. Have a look at dataguard performance tuning guide. Maybe there is something you can fix on the configuration to be faster.

CloudControl 12c: when adding cluster-database single instances are missing
Hello ,
I'e have installed the agent 12c on every single host of our RAC. When adding a database to CloudControl 12c just the RAC-instance gets discovered - but not the single database instances on each host.
Due to this when clicking targets -> databases I just see the cluster-database - but not every single instance of the database.
Compared to another RAC database this is totally different behaviour.
Any help will be appreciated
Rgds
JHHello ,
maybe I should try to explain the issue a little bit clearer...
We have one RAC database called PROD02. When clicking "targets -> databases" I see the following:
PROD02 of type Cluster Database
PROD021 of type Database Instance
PROD022 of type Database Instance
That's the way it shoudl be - that's the way I expected it...
For the newly cofgured RAC database, called PREP02, it looks different when clicking "targets -> databases"
PREP02 of type Cluster Database
The single instances don't show up. Of course I see the single instances when clicking on "PREP02" under the item "Instances".
Now I wonder why these two RAC databases are differently displayed when clicking "targets -> databases". When trying to add the single instances (clicking "Add" under "targets -> databases") and selecting then either "only on the host <hostname>" or "on all hosts in the cluster" no single instances are found or displayed...
