Resume Bookmarking on Shared Machine

Greetings gurus and non-gurus (like me).
There have been some discussions around managing the Resume settings in published, LMS-deployed Captivate pieces and this will solve my problems going forward, I think. But today I have to face and resolve a present issue that goes a little something like this.
For no good reason whatsoever, the shared computer in our widget factory has only one login ... the Windows User Name is "Widget". Both Bob and Sally share this same computer -- logged in to Windows as "Widget".
Sally logged in to our LMS as herself and completed the Widget Quality Control training course. Good for Sally.
Bob next logged in to the LMS and launched the Widget Quality Control training course and was taken to the last page of the course. He cannot restart from the beginning, and he cannot complete the course. It sucks to be Bob.
Bob calls the Help Desk and courteously explains his frustrations...
At this point, I would like to be able to tell the Help Desk how to instruct Bob to delete the progress tracking for the course so that he can start over from the beginning. It is clear that the courseware is probably tracking the user's progress according to the Windows user account "Widget's" (which was "Completed" by Sally).
I was hoping it would be as simple, perhaps, as clearing the browser's cache and re-launching the course. But woe; it is not to be.
I suspect therefore that the tracking information is being maintained by Captivate in the user's profile directory structure (e.g. C:\users\Widget\...)... perhaps in the AppData folder or some other location related to the windows profile. Perhaps it is somewhere else entirely, and I am way off base.
Does anybody know if I am on the right track to "resetting/clearning" progress tracking for poor Bob so that he can complete his training. If so, it would be very helpful to know the proper procedure to accomplish this given my situation. I know this isn't the elegant solution that I will eventually implement, but I need at least a temporary "work around".
As always, thanks to all for a most helpful user forum!!
Mike

Are you by any chance using the TOC in your courses? If I am not mistaken the TOC stores progress as a LSO (Local Shared Object) on the users computer. That would cause problems for Bob and Sally.  The LSO's cannot be deleted through the browser so that could explain why your helpdesk can't assist them with deleting the bookmark.
If you are using Captivate's built in bookmark function then one thing you could do is to automatically reset it when it reaches the last page of the course. This is generally also a good idea since a user that has completed a course most likely don't want to be teleported to the last page again when they restart the course.
I'm not 100% that this will work for Captivate 4, because I have only tested it in Captivate 3.
Insert the below code as execute JavaScript in your project end options:
var data = g_objAPI.GetValue(”cmi.suspend_data”);data = “A” + data.substring(1);g_objAPI.SetValue(”cmi.suspend_data”,data);
This will clear the bookmark (at least for Captivate 3).
You can read a bit more about it here: http://www.captivate4.com/2008/11/25/reset-bookmark-in-captivate-3/

As a side note I was deleting bookmarks with the keyboard delete key and it ran away deleting bookmarks long after I let up. Then safari froze. died and lost the bookmarks

I don't know why you moved the app. Move the application back into your "Applications" folder which is where it belongs and should always stay. Then drag the app down to your Dock, if the Dock icon is not there already.
Now, open AddressBook. The click on the TM icon on your Dock. Now do you see the TM screen with AB open? Good. Use the TM time arrow back button until AB appears the way it used to be. Then click restore.

  • Restoring Firefox Bookmarks from Time Machine

I just updated my OS to 10.5.8. When I went to restore my Firefox Bookmarks from Time machine using this pathway: /users/username/library/application support/firefox, I realized that I do NOT have a Firefox folder in this pathway. There is a mozilla folder that contains a folder called "extensions" and an icon labeled pkcs11.shlb.
I am desperate to find my Firefox bookmarks. Any suggestions on where I might be able to find/restore them?
    Thanks!

this can't be. if you've been using firefox that folder must be there. firefox won't even run without creating it. maybe it got a hidden flag? run this in terminal and post the results
    ls -ladeO@ ~/library/application support/Firefox

  • Restoring safari bookmarks from time machine

Somehow bookmarks in one of my Safari bookmark folders got deleted in the course of attempting to move the folder. When I go into time machine to restore an earlier version of my book marks time machine does not display the contents of the caches folder where I understand the Safari bookmarks are kept, i.e. ~/library/caches/metadata/safari/bookmarks..
Is there a way to get time machine to display contents of the caches and metadata folders? If not, is there another way to restore an earlier version of my Safari bookmarks? I have separate backups on external drives in addition to the time machine backup.
    Thanks,

EDIT (copy from above response in thread)
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    ~/Library/Safari
    Quit Safari.
    Select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window should open. Restore the file named "Bookmarks.plist" in that folder from a backup that predates the unwanted changes.

  • How can i retrieve bookmarks from time machine?

Hello. I need major help. This past weekend, I had to wipe the HD on my Macbook Pro. I did have Time Machine backups at the time. Is there any way to retrieve my old Firefox bookmarks from Time Machine? Please help. I'm trying to recover more than two years of work. Please help! :-)

You would have to find the previously used Firefox profile folder in the Time Machine backup.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
The profile folder consists of a part with a random name and a trailing file extension part that shows in the Profile Manager.
You need to go one level up and locate that folder in the time machine backup.
    */Users/<user>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>/
Then you need to transfer the places.sqlite file to the current profile folder or possibly use a JSON backup to restore the bookmarks.
Make sure to remove other possible places.sqlite files (places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal in particular).

  • I don't have any shared machines but one appears in my Finder

Finder says I have a shared machine called Thomson, yet I am not connected t any other Macs. I do have a La Cie machine for Time Machine, but other wise nothing else - so who is Thomson ?

Dont be so certain you're the only one on the network. One possibility could be that if you're on your WiFi network you might be getting an ip address in the range 192.168.1.x. If "Thomson" is connected securely to another wireless router nearby and is getting another ip address in the same range from his WiFi router, then its possible "Bonjour" wireless networking is finding his network signal and configuring your computer to be able to see his on the network.
Try turning off the airport card temporarily. If "Thomson" disappears then he's definitely nearby on some WiFi signal.

  • After restoring bookmarks from Time Machine, iCloud keeps changing them back.

Is there a way to force iCloud to choose the bookmarks from safari on my computer?
When I turn on Safari sharing in iCloud, it merges, and messes things up.
I'm running latest Yosemite and iOS8 on all devices.
    Thanks!

Thanks Linc. I just tried it. Turned of Safari sync on all devices, but when I turn on Safari sync on my computer to start things off, it's still getting the old data from somewhere. Maybe it's storing it in the cloud and I need to delete that data somehow? I definitely turned off sync on all possible devices.
Thanks for helping! I really appreciate it.

  • How can I restore my contacts and bookmarks from Time Machine?

A few weeks ago a friend tried to help my wife with a problem on her Mac and unwittingly in the process fiddled with my iMac so that I now have her contact list and her bookmarks and I can't find any way to get my iMac back to the way it was. I have a Time Machine backup, conscientiously kept, and a SuperDuper backup as well. Can somebdy please tell me how to restore my computer to its former state?

To restore your contacts, quit the Address Book or Contacts application. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select Services ▹ Reveal from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Restore the selected folder, or its contents, from a backup.
To restore your Safari bookmarks, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist

  • I would like to know how to selectively merge bookmarks on two machines on the same network please

Over time, my desktop and notebook computer bookmarks have diverged. I would like to be able to merge them so they are both the same again, choosing entries from each machine as appropriate. With IE I used to use a directory/file comparison tool, but I undertand FF uses a database and haven't found out how to do it.

  • Strange behavior with Quick Cluster and one shared machine

Hi, I've been struggling for a while with my compressor 4.0.7 distributed processing setup... Here is my configuration:
1 Mac Mini running as a Quick Cluster with services (3 instances of compressor shared)
1 Macbook Pro running Services Only (7 instances of compressor shared)
1 Macbook Pro (much older) running Services Only (2 instances of compressor shared)
All 3 systems are running Mavericks, but I had this same problem when all 3 were Mountain Lion.. Had to trash the app and all of the prefs in Library\Application Support\Apple Qmaster and Compressor and reinstall to get the app running on all of the upgraded machines, so a fresh start didn't fix this issue.
The Mac Mini and the older Macbook Pro can see the cluster, submit jobs and are both utilized for rendering when jobs are submitted from the Mini or the older Macbook Pro
The newer MBP can see the cluster in Share Monitor and in qadministrator, but cannot see any of the jobs in the history (the other Macbook Pro can see all details identically to the Mac Mini).  When a job gets submitted from this system it appears as "Not Available" on the Mac Mini share monitor and it only utilizes 1 local process to do the rendering, which stalls out after about 1 minute. Activity Monitor shows all 7 instances of compressord are running and not frozen but have no activity.
Jobs submitted from the Mini and older MBP attempt to use the newer MBP for distributed rendering but stall out after about 30 seconds with a host error.  The shared volume never appears on the newer MBP. Qadministrator on the Mini can see the newer MBP and all of the listed services as available.
Now here is the part that really blows my mind:
After submitting a job to the cluster from the newer MBP, which will stall out and need to be cancelled as mentioned above; submitting a job from the mini will actually successfully use the services on the newer MBP. Share monitor on the newer MBP still does not display any jobs on the server cluster. Rebooting the newer MBP puts me right back in the "I won't play with those other macs" tantrum.
Anyone else see this issue and have a fix for it? Workarounds are nice but this is very, very annoying when I get into crunch time.

    Do you have log files?

  • Retrieve bookmarks in time machine

I accidentally erased all my bookmarks and need to access them from my time machine.  I would need to import them into either safari or firefox (my firefox seems to be corrupted)

    Hi...
In Time Machine look for the Bookmarks.plist file.
For Safari, go to the Safari menu bar click File > Import Bookmarks

  • Restoring bookmarks from Time Machine?

    Hi everyone,
This is the first time I'm posting. I've been trying to restore my Google Chrome bookmarks for hours now from my Time Machien backup. I'm running Mac OSX version 10.5.8. I can't find the directory where the bookmarks are stored.
    I've tried the ~Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome path...
Problem is that when I get to the google folder in the application support folder, the Chrome folder does not exist in any of my back ups. Does this mean my Time Machine DIDN'T backup my bookmarks?!?!??!?!?!? Are there other ways I can retreive my bookmarks? I really need help on this quick- I have so many bookmarks that are great online resources for me ; (
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Maggie

Copy the text on the line below to the clipboard, then quit Safari:
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Disable Safari synchronization in iCloud, if applicable.
Select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens, then press return.
A folder window will open with a file selected. Enter Time Machine and restore the selected file.

  • Safari bookmarks lost - Time Machine not doing his job ?!?!

I recently made a clean install of my system (10.6.6). I backed up everything before, did it again to make sure it was really backed up, and then I inserted the DVD.
Now back in OS X, I wanted to take my bookmarks from my back up. I know where they are /user/Library/Safari/bookmarks.plist
The thing is that this bookmark file is like a couple of days old. There are bookmarks that should be there that aren't ! Same thing with the history.plist file : I looked at it while thinking of the last websites I went to before doing the back ups and these websites aren't there too !
What's wrong with Time Machine ? I ******* hate it when machines don't do there job correctly.
Is there a place where these missing bookmarks might be ? Or should I start using something else than Time Machine ? Where's the problem ?
    Thanks in advance.
(edit: sorry, wrong subforum : this belongs in the Mac OS X v10.6)

You might have been bitten by a fairly rare but long-known bug in Snow Leopard. See the yellow box in #D5 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Probably no way to tell at this late date whether that was the cause or not.

  • How to Restore Safari Bookmarks with Time Machine in Lion

    Hi -
I want to restore my Safari bookmarks.
I am running Lion and have a Time Machine backup with the correct bookmarks.plist file.
The problem - as I see it - is that the "Library" folder - where the Safari bookmarks.plist file is located - no longer shows up (by default in Lion) in the Home folder.
I fixed it so that "Library" does now show up in the home folder but since it was not set to show "Library" at the time the backup I need was done, it doesn't show up in the Home folder for the backup that I need.
I have tried restoring the entire Home folder but this is not restoring my bookmarks for some reason.
I even tried restoring the entire hard drive but that did not work either!
It would seem that the "library" folder - even if it was hidden - would be restored when I did the entire Home folder or the entire hard drive.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Brillianrt! Worked like a charm.
Then I found an easy solution to alphabetizing that doesn't require 3rd party software in a Macworld article:
"Without resorting to external tools or dragging links about, it’s actually fairly simple to order the list. Make sure you can see a Finder window, or your Desktop, and the Safari Bookmarks window at the same time. Now just drag the folder (or folders) you want sorted from the Safari window to your Desktop—you’ll see the folder appear when you release the mouse. Switch to the Finder, and open each folder. Set the view to List view, and then close the window (not strictly necessary, but I’m a neat freak).
Now drag the folder back into Safari’s Bookmarks window; Safari will treat it like a newly-imported folder of bookmarks and add it to the list. Open the folder in the Bookmarks window, and you’ll see your neatly-sorted bookmarks."
    Love my Mac
