Returning strings from Java- C JNI calls

<newbie to JNI>
I have an application written in Java that accesses a .DLL written in C. The .DLL does low-level communication to a hardware device. I've got it all working except for one little problem:
For all of the functions I need to return an integer return code and for some of them I also need to return a string, such as a serial number, version string, or whatever.
Try as I might, I can't find any information on how to return two values from a function call (pretty sure I can't in Java).
SO, I tried to find out how to stuff the version string into a string object variable in the class object the DLL API is defined in. I can't figure out how to do that either...
e.g. the following Java code:
class LLDev {
/* --- Load the .DLL -------------------- */
static { System.loadLibrary("LLDev"); }
/* --- Error Codes ---------------------- */
public static final int LLDOk = 0;
public static final int LLDInitErr     = -1;
/* --- Public Variables ----------------- */
public static String DLLVersion;
/* --- Public Methods ------------------- */
public native int InitLLDev();
When I invoke LLDev.InitLLDev() from Java I want the C .DLL function Java_LLDev_InitLLDev to put the DLL Version string in the LLDev object's DLLVersion field and return an error code as the function result.
Is this possible???? Is this the right way to do this?? I tried to define the API with methods that return strings instead of integer return codes but the customer using the class wants all of the methods to return a return code in case of some error (e.g. reading the serial number from the device could fail...)

1. In general, the java way to deal with errors is by throwing exceptions, not using return codes. But OK, you are stuck with the user requirement.
2. I suggest you have the native method take as an argument a java object which will accept a string as input. In other words, it has a string "setter".
3. So in your native method, if the function succeeds, it writes your string result to that object, and you can futrther process it when the native method returns a "success" code.
4. There are JNI methods for
o looking up the class of a java object.
o looking up the method of a java class.
o invoking the method.

    I created java stored function: it's doing http post, parsing xml from http reply, and returning string result.

    The high level procedure, has following form:

    sbe.logger.log("Finish SBE intetraction");
    return result;

    end;
    In log file ("d:\\oracle\\ora81\\network\\log\\SBE.log"), I can find message :

    This comes up periodically. It just isn't possible using that type of approach. Probably the best you could do is the create an ADT (containing collections) and use that to pass a 'batch' of information.
    Hopefully this will get addressed in the next release of the database.

  • How to get return value from java and read by other application?

    i want to read return value from java and the other application read it.
    for example:
    public class test_return {
        test_return(){
        public int check(){
            return 1;
        public static void main(String args[]){
           new test_return().check();
    }from that class i make as jar file. How to read the return value (1) by other application?
    thx..

    If your installer is requiring some process it invokes to return a particular value on failure, then the installer is seriously broken. There are a bazillion commands your installer could invoke, and any of them could fail, which in turn could invalidate the entire install process, and any of them could return any value on failure. The only value that's consistent (in my experience) is that zero means success and non-zero means failure, with specific non-zero values being different in different programs.
    About the only control you have over the JVM's exit code is that if your main method completes without throwing an exception, the JVM will have an exit code of 0, and if main throws an exception (either explicitly or by not catching one thrown from below), it will be non-zero. I'm not even sure if that's guaranteed, but I would guess that's the case.
    EDIT: I'm kind of full of crap here. If you're writing the Java code, you can call System.exit(whatever). But nonetheless, if your installer requires certain exit codes from any app--java or otherwise--you have a problem.

  • How to access data structures in C dll from java thru JNI?

    We have been given API's( collection of C Functions) from some vendor.
    SDK from vendor consist of:
    Libpga.DLL, Libpga.h,Libpga.lib, Along with that sample program Receiver.h (i don't know its written in C or C++), I guess .C stnads for C files?
    Considering that I don't know C or C++ (Except that I can understand what that program is doing) & i have experience in VB6 and Java, In order to build interface based on this API, I have two option left, Use these dll either from VB or Java.
    As far as I know, calling this DLL in VB requires all the data structures & methods to be declared in VB, I guess which is not the case with Java (? I'm not sure)
    I experiemnted calling these function from Java through JNI, and I successfully did by writting wrapper dll. My question is whether I have to declare all the constants & data structures defined in libpga.h file in java, in order to use them in my java program??
    Any suggesstion would be greatly appreciated,
    Vini

    1. There are generators around that claim to generate suitable wrappers, given some dll input. I suggest you search google. Try JACE, jni, wrapper, generator, .... Also, serach back through this forum, where there have been suggestions made.
    2. In general, you will need to supply wrappers, and if you want to use data from the "C side" in java, then you will need java objects that hold the data.

  • Return data from Java servlet in form of JSON encoded parameters in Javascr

    How to return data from Java servlet in form of JSON encoded parameters in Javascript handler function call?
    The same is implemented in php as the following
    echo "sT.handleAjaxResponse(";
    echo json_encode($response);
    echo ");";
    How to do the same in Java servlet?
    Thanks.

    With the rising popularity of JSON (especially with Ajax), support for it has started to appear in the Java community. I am not aware of any standardized approach yet, but expect it is likely we'll see that eventually. For now, you probably want to look at a third-party library such as the [JSON in Java Library|http://www.json.org/java/], Jettison, or [Java Tools for the JSON Format|http://jsontools.berlios.de/].

  • Executing DLLs from Java using JNI vs Runtime.exec()

    I am trying to understand the best way to execute a dll using java. The dll I am testing with takes a few input parameter. If I use JNI with System.loadLibrary("dll"); what do I need to do to pass the arguements in as well? Can I just add the arguements in the java code like private int xyz = "value"; and expect that the dll will accept them or is there special definitions I have to set up in the dll to make it work?
    Alternatively I was looking at using Runtime to execute the dll by using Runtime.exec("dll param1 param2",env,filePath); Does anyone know if there are drawback to doing it this way vs. using JNI or is this just as efficient? Any help would be appreciated.

    You seem to be confused...
    "execute a dll using java"
    Unless I'm mistaken, a dll is not executable. A dll is a library of code. This code has (hopefully) some well-defined entry points (declared in a header file somewhere) which you must call in a C/C++ file. The arguments you pass to the dll will come from java through JNI.
    As far as your understanding of this entire process, it is obviously confused beyond the scope of a simple reply. I recommend you read the examples and ALL of the documentation available here:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/native1.1/index.html
    When you get the/an example running (or just set up to run) then post your code and comments here for more help.

  • Return national language strings from java stored procedures

    Hi, all.
    How does i can return String which contains national characters from java stored procedure? I.e. convert UTF java string to national language of database. It's does not processing automatically (why?).
    declaration of procedure:
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION TestNLSString RETURN VARCHAR2
    AS
    LANGUAGE JAVA
    NAME 'test.SomeClass.getNLSString() return java.lang.String';
    SELECT TestNLSString AS X FROM DUAL;
    X
    iiiii
    OS: Windows 2000 Server
    Oracle Server version: Oracle 8.1.7.1.4

    Ok. I had a specific problem.
    I want to use java stored procedure (function) to make a connection to remote db using supplied connection parameters make some quieries there end return results in a form of structured data - object.
    I have defined an object type in a database where the function will reside. I granted execute privilege to public user on this type, made public synonyms to both, the object type and the function, so anybody connected to the same database would have an access to this functionality.
    I supposed that if I supply connection parameters for some other user but the same database when running the function, everything should go smooth. Yeah.
    My java code executed ok: it made a connection to the db with some x user, it resolved object type descriptor given (oracle.sql.StructDescriptor), but pl/sql wrapper function reported the error I've mentioned. If I executed the function giving it the connection parameters for same account as where object type was declared, everything went fine.
    My final solution is:
    Make TWO! connection in java code: 1st for ("jdbc:default:connection:"), 2nd for remote database account.
    Use first connection to construct oracle.sql.StructDescriptor
    Use second connection to retreive data from remote db

  • Need to return String from C Program to Java

    I need to execute a C Program, which returns a string, from my java application. I was thinking of using RMI to execute this C program. Any idea ?

    There are lots of ways to do this. The simplist is probably for the C program to write it's output to a temporary file, and then have the java program read that file. Or, you could open a socket and pass the string that way (say, have your java program listen on a port and have the C program open a connection to the java program and write it's string).
    Hope that gives you a starter

      </destination>
    Please help me .

    You are not able to get the returned value because if you see the Remote object help you will realise you have to use result="resultfn()" and fault = "faultfn()"
    In this you define what you wish to do.
    More importantly in the remote object you need to define which method you wish to call using the method class like this
    <mx:RemoteObject id="remoteObj" destination="sro" result="r1" fault="f1"  >
         <Method name="javaMethodName" result="r2" fault="f2"/>
    <mx:RemoteObject>
    r2 is the function where you get the result back from java and can use it to send the alert.

  • How to return sdo_geometry from java procedure

    How can I return a SDO_GEOMETRY object from a java-stored-procedure to PL/SQL.
    I have a java class with methods that creates a specific polygon based on some user values. I want to return this polygon as a SDO_GEOMETRY object to a PL/SQL procedure.
    JDeveloper does not accept SDO_GEOMETRY as a return type.
    Can this be done?

    Justin,
    I have a PL/SQL package that contains several functions. One of them does selection and filtering of spatial features based on a user's location and preferences. For this purpose a web-application runs this function.
    I would like this function to do the following:
    1. the function is called, user parameters are passed in
    2. a call to a java-stored-procedure is made. This java procedure creates a polygon based on the user's location and preferences.
    3. the polygon is returned to the PL/SQL function
    4. the funtion uses the returned polygon to query spatial features that intersect, etc.
    I can do the call to the java-stored-procedure but where I get stuck is how to get the polygon from java to pl/sql. I can return a String or a number from java but how can I return the polygon (e.g., STRUCT, java object)?
    The current solution uses a work-around by storing the polygon in a temporary table. I would like to change this because once the function has run, the polygon is not needed anymore so I would like to do without having to store the polygon.

    Hi,
    Have your tried pr.exitValue() ?
    I think you also need a finally block that destroys the subprocess

  • Returning strings from OLE2 Word object (Forms 4.5)

    Below is an example of how to return string and numeric values from OLE2 objects. In this example the OLE2 object is a MS Word document, and I want to fetch all the bookmarks in the Document into a Forms 4.5 Varchar2. To do this I first need to get the count of bookmarks.
    Getting a string property from an OLE2 object is a common OLE2 requirement but is poorly documented. This is the ONLY way it can be done, as OLE2.INVOKE_CHAR returns a single character not a string. Use OLE2.INVOKE_OBJ, then OLE2.GET_CHAR_PROPERTY which does return a string, as shown below, to return a string from an OLE object (or OLE property).
    Also note how you can only get the child object from its parent, not the grandchild (etc) object, so multiple (cascading) GET_OBJ_PROPERTY calls are required.
