Reverse Engineering db schema - UML & Stored Procedures

Do any of you kind folks know of an open source plug-in for SJSE or Eclipse that can reverse engineer a Sybase ASE schema to a UML class diagram?
I also need to edit existing stored proceedures in Sybase ASE and I am hoping to do this in SJSE or Eclipse as well.
The reason being is that I am tasked with updating a large web app. and I thought something like this would help me get a handle on where I need to make changes to the existing .jsp and .java sources. The original developers are long gone and there is no documentation. I am just a sales person who was given this development task and I have no money.

Unfortunately, the UML module for NetBeans/JavaStudioEnterprise does not as yet support database modelling.
There are several tools available on the net though:

  • Import/Export a schema in Stored Procedure

    Can I execute an import or export a schema from within a stored procedure?

    One last question.
    I'm now testing doing an import and when I run my procedure I'm getting an error from within the DBMS_DATAPUMP procedure. Here it is:
    Error report:
    ORA-39001: invalid argument value

    *Action:   Correct the bad argument and retry the API.
    Here is the procedure I'm running:

         /* END THE DATAPUMP PROCEDURE */
         DBMS_DATAPUMP.DETACH(v_dp_job_handle) ;
    END ;
    My guess is the parameter that it doesn't like is the VALUE parameter in the METADATA_FILTER section. What I want to do is export the TEST schema and then import it back into the same database into a new TEST2 schema. How can I do that?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Schemas and stored procedures

    Hi,I'm new at Oracle so I don't know how silly my question must sound. I would like to know if I can execute a stored procedure, without refering to its schema in the beginning, from an schema B if I'm logged in as a user from schema A. I got an error if I dont executed as "B.SP_SONTHING". What's my problem is it a matter of grants or what?
    Thanks

  • Adding named constraints from another schema using stored procedures

    I need some help. I am trying to create a constraint like Primary key on a table in schema say 'a' from schema 'b'. in Oracle 10g. Schema b has all permissions of create, alter table, create index and other permissions required.
    I can create this constraint from schema b using SQL command 'alter table add constraint...' but not from inside a procedure. I am using 'Execute Immediate' statement to alter table to add constraint. While trying from a procdure, it throws the error as 'insufficeint previleges'.
    Kindly advise.

    it is due to roles.
    if schema b has for example role DBA it is not sufficient. You should
    GRANT ALTER ANY TABLE TO B;maybe also CREATE ANY INDEX. not sure...

    I am writing the payload that goes into the Stored procedure to an output file and it contains the proper value for transactionId (which has been mapped to SP input argument..)
    But it doesnt seem to invoke the procedure at all. I am confirming that it is not invoking the stored procedure(SP) as I have written out the input value that comes into the SP and this value is null.
    Is there something that I need to do this to work?
    I also found out that what I supply is integer , but the SP is looking for decimal. I saw these types in the mapping file.(.xsl).
    <CRequest><Transaction><transactionId> type is integer.
    <InputParameters><PVN_TRANSACTION_ID> type is decimal.
    Does that make any difference?
    Thanks,

    Thanks James.
    I always wonder where to look for errors. I look in <ORACLE_HOME>J2EE/logs.log.xml. Is it the right place? I also look under opmn folder. I dont see any good error message anywhere. ESB is very bad in communicating back to users. Sometimes it writes just the payload and no error message like why it didnt like the payload.
    Regarding executing Stored procedure, I have some logging statements in Stored procedure that writes the incoming input to a temporary table and this value is always null. So, the Stored Procedure in not getting the value passed by the ESB DB adapter node. I have the mapping done using xsl that writes from input xml to input of stored procedure.
    Any ideas?

  • JDeveloper capabilities for Reverse Engineering existing instances and data

    We are experiencing difficulty obtaining the indexes, synonyms, and triggers via reverse-engineering capture of existing 10g DB's. Does JDeveloper have the capabilities for Reverse Engineering all objects from existing DB's ?
    Will 10g JDeveloper handle reverse-engineering large 300 table schemas rich with large quantity of indexes, synonyms, & triggers?
    And last, how can a listing of the Data Dictionary be extracted /exported in CSV or excel format for review distribution? Via JDeveloper? We have a large distributed development, test, quality, and integration team which prefers to review various elements of schema updates and changes in excel.
    Thanx.

    Vicki-
    Thanks for the additional info. I was thinking you were most concerned with reverse-engineering existing schemas. I did not realize you were designing new schemas.
    When you mention ERDs, are you interested in logical ERDs (as compared to physical tables and foreign keys)? If you are interested in doing pure logical ERD modelling, then Designer is the way to go. It has been years since I worked with Designer, but it has ooodles of capabilities to forward and reverse engineer between databases, physical models, and logical models of schemas. It sounds like you might be using Designer today and are hitting some snags. Is this the case? If so, I suggest you see if Oracle Support or the Designer forum can help you get past the specific Designer issues. The forum for Oracle Designer is here: Designer
    Sue mention that JDeveloper does support database modelling. Here is a how-to for JDeveloper 11g that shows how it works:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe11jdev/11/db_dev/obe_%20databasedevmt.htm
    The how-to is pretty complete showing you forward and reverse engineering capabilities.
    A few more minor notes:
    1.The JDeveloper schema modelling features work on a physical (not logical) level. In other words, they work on tables not entities.
    2.The SQL Developer report features certainly work on "DATA". But, the "DATA" they work on can certainly be the data dictionary data. In other words, I can write a report in SQL Developer that queries all of the column names, column data types for a subset of tables. Then I can export that "DATA" into excel and use it for whatever your downstream needs are. The potential capabilities are practically unlimited.
    Cheers,

  • Calling stored procedure with output parameters in a different schema

    I have a simple stored procedure with two parameters:
    PROCEDURE Test1(
    pOutRecords OUT tCursorRef,
    pIdNumber IN NUMBER);
    where tCursorRef is REF CURSOR.
    (This procedure is part of a package with REF CURSOR declared in there)
    And I have two database schemas: AppOwner and AppUser.
    The above stored procedure is owned by AppOwner, but I have to execute this stored procedure from AppUser schema. I have created a private synonym and granted the neccessary privileges for AppUser schema to execute the package in the AppUser schema.
    When I ran the above procedure from VB using ADO and OraOLEDB.Oracle.1 driver, I got the following error when connecting to the AppUser schema:
    ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:
    PLS-00306: wrong number or types of arguments in call to 'TEST1'
    ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:
    PL/SQL: Statement ignored
    but when I was connecting to the AppOwner schema, everything is running correctly without errors.
    Also, when I switch to the microsoft MSDAORA.1 driver, I can execute the above procedure without any problems even when connecting to the AppUser schema.
    I got this error only when I am trying to execute a stored procedure with an output parameter. All other procedures with only input parameters have no problems at all.
    Do you know the reason for that? Thanks!

    If anyone has figured this one out let me know. I'm getting the same problem. Only in my case I've tried both the "OraOLEDB.Oracle" provider and the "MSDAORA" provider and I get an error either way. Also my procedure has 2 in parameters and 1 out parameter. At least now I know I'm not the only one with this issue. :)

  • "Best Practice" for a stored procedure that needs to access two schemas?

    Greetings all,
    When my company's application is deployed, two schema owners are typically created and all database objects divided between the two. I'll call them FIRST and SECOND.
    In a standard, vanilla implementation there is never any reason for the two to "talk to each other". No rights to objects in one schema are ever granted to the other.
    I am currently charged, however, with writing custom code to roll up data from one of the schemas and update tables in the other with the rollups. I have created a user whose job it is to run this process, and this user has the proper permissions to all necessary objects in both schemas. I'll call this user MRBATCH.
    Typically, any custom objects, whether they be additional staging tables, temp tables or stored procedures are saved in the FIRST schema. I tried to save this new stored procedure in the FIRST schema and compile it, but got "Insufficient priviliges" errors whenever the code in the stored procedure tried to access any tables in the SECOND schema. This surprised me a little bit because I had no plans to actually EXECUTE the stored procedure as FIRST, but I guess I can understand it from the point of view of, you ought be able to execute something you own.
    So which would be be "better" (assuming there's any difference): Grant FIRST all of the rights it needs in SECOND and save the stored procedure in FIRST, or could I just save the stored procedure in the MRBATCH schema? I'm not sure which would be "better practice".
    Is there a third option I'm overlooking perhaps?
    Thanks
    Joe

    In this case I would put it again into schema THIRD. This is a kind of API schema. There are procedures in it that allow some customized functionality. And since you grant only the right to execute those procedures (should be packages of cause) you won't get into any conflicts about allowing somebody too much.
    Note that this suggestion seems very similiar to putting the procedure directly to the executing user MRBATCH. It depends how this schemauser is used. I always prefer separating users from schemas.
    By definition the oracle object to represent a schema is identical to the oracle object representing a user (exception: externally defined users).
    my definition is:
    Schema => has objects (tables, packages) and uses tables space
    User => has priviledges (including create session and connect) and uses temp tablespace only. Might have synonyms and views.
    You can mix both, but sometimes it makes much sense to separate one from the other.

  • Java Stored Procedure SAXParser XML Schema Validation

    Using Oracle XML Developers Kit 10.2.0.2.0 - Production.
    Attempting to validate using XML Schema in a Java stored procedure with the code:
                   if ( schemaDoc == null )
                        // Obtain default connection
                        Connection conn = new OracleDriver().defaultConnection();
                        OraclePreparedStatement stmt = (OraclePreparedStatement) conn.prepareStatement("SELECT XmlDocObj FROM XmlDoc WHERE XmlDocNbr = 2");
                        OracleResultSet rset = (OracleResultSet)stmt.executeQuery();
                        if ( rset.next() )
                             // get the XMLType
                             XMLType schemaXml = (XMLType)rset.getObject(1);
                             XSDBuilder builder = new XSDBuilder();
                             XMLSchema schemaDoc = (XMLSchema)builder.build(new InputSource(schemaXml.getInputStream()));
                   if ( inst == null )
                        inst = new ValidateCoreRequest();
                   ErrorHandlerImpl handler = inst.getNewErrorHandler();
    SAXParser saxParser = new SAXParser();
    saxParser.setXMLSchema(schemaDoc);
    saxParser.setValidationMode(XMLParser.SCHEMA_VALIDATION);
    saxParser.setErrorHandler(handler);
    saxParser.parse(new InputSource(new StringReader(docStr)));
    if( handler.validationError )
                        errorMsg[0] = handler.saxParseException.getMessage().substring(0, Math.min(199, handler.saxParseException.getMessage().length()));
    Never reports validation errors in the XML. Although the XDK Programmers Guide states "...you can use
    the oracle.xml.parser.schema.XSDBuilder class to build an XML schema and
    then configure the parser to use it by invoking the XMLParser.setXMLSchema()
    method. In this case, the XML parser automatically sets the validation mode to
    SCHEMA_STRICT_VALIDATION and ignores the schemaLocation and
    noNamespaceSchemaLocation attributes." No validation seems to occur. I have tried to set an xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation attribute on the root XML node, but this results in URL errors if the URL is not valid or schema build errors if the URL is valid, but does not point to a real location.
    It appears that without a schema location attribute, no schema validation occurs. Using setXMLSchema() with a database source does not seem to cause the schema location attributes to be ignored. At least for Java stored procedures.
    Does XML Schema validation work in the database for externally referenced schemas?
    Thank You,
    Art

    Edit your XSU installation script located on lib directory of Oracle XSU's distribution:

  • DB adapter calling stored procedure and change database schema

    Hello,
    when I create DB adapter which call stored procedure I find that is reference to DB schema in JCA file. Other DB adapter operation (select, insert, delete) store only connection-factory location.
    What happend when I move procedure to another DB schema or rename DB schema?
    It is only about change SchemaName in JCA file?
    Thank you.

    It sounds excelent.
    I try it. Change JCA file and redeploy SCA of service.
    Next I change user in data source (password is the same for both schemas). Save and activate changes. Update deployment of DBAdapter.
    Select operation on service works but return data from old schema.
    Call stored procedure fail with exception:

The invoked JCA adapter raised a resource exception.

  • Create stored procedure with table from another schema throws PLS-00201

    Oracle 10g. I'm new to procedures, so maybe I'm missing something obvious.
    Schema owner ABC has table T2001_WRITEOFF. The SYSDBAs granted SIUD to Some_Update_Role, and granted that role to developer user IJK. User IJK then created a private synonym T2001_WRITEOFF for ABC.T2001_WRITEOFF. This worked with normal SQL DML commands.
    When I try to create a simple procedure as follows, it throws PLS-00201 identifier 'T2001_WRITEOFF' must be declared, and points to the 2nd line.
    create or replace procedure woof1(
      fooname in T2001_WRITEOFF.territory%TYPE,  <=== error points here
      bardesc IN T2001_WRITEOFF.ind_batch_submit%TYPE) IS
    BEGIN
       INSERT into T2001_WRITEOFF
       VALUES ( fooname, bardesc);
    END woof1;
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks
    JimR

    Hi,
    The reason I've heard has to do with knowing when a procedure becomes invalid due to privileges being revoked.  Any time a grant to a role is revoked, you would have to check all procedures that depended on that role to know if they were still valid.  Even worse, since roles can be granted to other roles, every time a role is revoked from another role, you would have to check all procedures that depended on anything to see if they were still valid.
    Oracle 11 behaves the same as earlier versions in this regard, and I don't expect this to change.
    This whole thread applies only to AUTHID DEFINER stored procedures (which is the default).  If you can make the procedure AUTHID CURRENT_USER, then you can run it with privileges granted through roles.  Usually, however, you really want AUTHID DEFINER, and granting the necessary privileges directly to the procedure owner (or to PUBLIC)  isn't too hard.

    I need to call a stored procedure from another stored procedure in a different schema. Can this be done?
    For example:
    I am logged on as USER1 and I try to call these stored procedures from within a stored procedure:

    USER2.DO_STUFF (does not compile)
    INSERT INTO USER2.SOME_TABLE VALUES(...) (does not run -table does not exist)

  • Query in Stored Procedure accessing another schema

    Hi - this is going to sound kind of strange and even i can't come up with an explanation. My JDK 1.1.7 applet uses a type 4 JDBC thin driver (i think v 8.04.06) to access an Oracle 7.3.4 database. We also have a link with full grants and synonymns to another Oracle schema in an Oracle 8 database. Has never been a problem - we can access anything we need to through queries or stored procedures from either of these databases.
    So, i have a new stored procedure that needs to be called through JDBC that queries a table in the Oracle 8 database. For some reason, whenever i execute this stored procedure from java it hangs on this query and the instance needs to be restarted. If i execute that same stored procedure from SQL Plus, it runs fine.
    I tried a little test. I put a straight query in my java code that goes directly to that table (no stored procedure involved). It runs great through java!
    is this weird or what? my dbas have checked out all privelages and it seems that i have access to everything i could possibly need.
    If anyone has any suggestions i would love to hear them.
    thanks for your help...

    You can only access an object in another user's schema if you either:
    (a) Specify the 'other' schema name explicitly: SCHEMA.OBJECT
    (b) A synonymn has been created to access the object: CREATE SYNONYM OBJECT FOR SCHEMA.OBJECT.
    The user requiring the synonym should create it, or the user owning the object can create a PUBLIC synonym, if they have the authority.
    To check my hypothesis, try typing 'DESCRIBE procedure_name' from SQL*Plus as both users.

  • Stored Procedure executes on two different schemas in Oracle 8i

    Can I Create a Stored Procedure that access table from two different schemas?
    For Example I have created this Stored Procedure on SCHEMA_ONE
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE SP_DEMO IS
    BEGIN
    INSERT INTO SCHEMA_ONE.COUNTRY_ONE(COUNTRY_NAME)
    SELECT COUNTRY_NAME
    FROM SCHEMA_TWO.COUNTRY_TWO
    END SP_DEMO;
    and when I execute it I am getting error message as :
    Error: PLS-00201: identifier 'SCHEMA_TWO.COUNTRY_TWO' must be declared
    is that possible? If yes then what I need to do for that?
    Please assist me.

    hi john

  • Data Modeler : Generate direct to a schema / Reverse engineering

    Hi everybody,
    I searched for informations in the help but I didn't found any interesting information.
    I would like to know :
    - If it's possible to generate the relation model directly to a schema? If yes, where can I found documentation?
    - Is it possible to create some scripts with reverse engineering (as Designer)?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Cedric,
    If it's possible to generate the relation model directly to a schema?no
    Is it possible to create some scripts with reverse engineeringYou can generate DDL script for objects in relational and physical model - press "Generate DDL" icon when you are in relational model or use "File>Export>DDL File".
    You also can generate "alter statements" when you compare relational model to database, DDL files or another design.
    You can look at available demonstrations http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/datamodeler/overview/index.html
