RID Pool

So, an ad-hoc client of mine has come to me with some issues. Wile resolving them I was also looking at a few other concerning replication issues and that the RID pool - although looking like it has a ton of available RIDs left to allocate is reporting less
than 2% available in the pool.
What can I do to verify that this is correct and is this a concern.
There are 2 Global Catalogs, both Server 2012.
dcdiag /test:ridmanager /v | find /i "available RID"
* Available RID Pool for the Domain is 11605 to 1073741823
* Warning :There is less than 2% available RIDs in the current pool
Thanks in advance.

  • RID Master not allocating new rid pool

     Hi guys,
I am having some problems with my server. I am unable to create new AD objects with the message, the directory has exhausted the pool of relative identifiers. I have a SBS 2003 environment with only that as the DC. However, a while ago, the previous
admin promoted another server (Server 2003) as a Backup DC and later on the network was split and the Secondary DC no longer connected to the domain. It was not demoted or anything like that. The network was split in two and now after almost a year I am unable
to create new objects. The PDC has all the FSMO roles as indicated when i run the netdom query fsmo command. Below is the dcdiag /v output:

Also, another problem I am experiencing seems to point to my DNS service which also runs on the same machine. When I try to open Active Directory snap ins, it indicates that the domain does not exist or cannot be contacted and the AD is unable to load.
I'd really appreciate any help at the moment. Thanks in advance.

    Idan,
Yes I followed the article regarding removing data in AD with NTDSUTIL. There is one domain and one site, but it states that there is "no current server" and "no current naming context"
My TCP/IP config was set to 127.0.0.1 but then I changed it to point to its static IP Address, but I stumbled onto a best practice article which indicated that the 127 address was preferred, so I changed it back. I changed it as you said and ran the commands

Experienced the following operational errors trying to retrieve replication information:
    58 - wsgbdc.WSG.local
In the event viewer there are two errors in the Directory Service, Error ID 2089 and 1864 both regarding replication not taking place.

  • Allocating extra RID pool

By default, RID master allocates 500 RIDs to each DC. When a DC runs out of RID and requests extra RID, how the allocation is done?
e.g if DC1 request additional RID pool, will RID master allocated extra pool only to requested DC or for all?
If it allocates to only the requested DC then if there are 8 DCs in a domain each having 500 RID and if DC1 has requested all the remaining RID Pool then RID master will run out of RID and cannot allocate RID to other DCs in the near future.

    Hi,
A domain controller requests RID allocations in blocks of 500 RIDs at one time. You can override this default using the following registry REG_DWORD value on a domain controller:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\RID Values
    RID Block Size

  • FIM: AD MA giving error: The directory service has exhausted the pool of relative identifiers.

    Greetings,
Trying to export users to an OU in a remote forest AD from FIM 2010 R2 and I keep getting this error back from the destination AD:
"The directory service has exhausted the pool of relative identifiers."
After reading up on this I went back to the AD owners of the forest and they said that they had seen this before and had applied this hotfix from Microsoft to give their RID pool another bit (now making 31bits)...
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2642658/en-us
Now I can create a user in their AD without a problem within ADSI, but FIM can't; I just get a "cd-error" with the afore-mentioned error description of "The directory service has exhausted the pool of relative identifiers".
I have checked the RID Manager, I have got the dcdiag (below) and everything looks OK except for the fact they have run this hotfix?
Test omitted by user request: Replications
          Starting test: RidManager
             * Available RID Pool for the Domain is 1073746324 to 2147483647
             * XXXXXXX is the RID Master
             * DsBind with RID Master was successful
             * rIDAllocationPool is 1073745324 to 1073745823
             * rIDPreviousAllocationPool is 1073745324 to 1073745823
             * rIDNextRID: 1073745324
Has anyone come across this issue regarding the hotfix before and, if so, how did you get around this via FIM?
    Cheers,

The work-around at the moment is to specify the IP address of the RID Pool manager server in the MA's preferred domain controller listing. Still working with the external forest as to why this is failing from the DC we initially connected to.

  • Allocation of RIDs to DC

We know that RID master is responsible for allocating RID pool to DCs.
RID master allocates RID pool in blocks of 500. Why is that so?
Why there is a constrain like only RID master allocated number of objects can be created?
Why can't we allocate infinite RID pool to DCs?

If all DCs had a "infinite" RID pool, how would you prevent two DCs from allocating the same RID? 500 RIDs are considered enough for a read/write DC while the RID master might be offline/unreachable

  • Windows server 2008 R2 Standard edition time server problem: The computer did not resync because no time data was available.

    Hello,
I'm trying to get my 2008 R2 server (physical server) to synch with an external time server. I've read other threads on the topic but have not found a solution. I'm sure i'm missing something.
First the step leading to the error:
    w32tm /resync /rediscover
Sending resync command to local computer
The computer did not resync because no time data was available.
    Following is the history:
    Here are the steps
    C:\>netdom /query fsmo
    Schema master               DC-01.coastal.local
    Domain naming master        DC-01.coastal.local
    PDC                         DC-01.coastal.local
    RID pool manager            DC-01.coastal.local
    Infrastructure master       DC-01.coastal.local
    The command completed successfully.
    next:
    w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:time.nist.gov,0x1 /syncfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update
    The command completed successfully.
    next:
    net stop w32time && net start w32time
The Windows Time service is stopping.
The Windows Time service was stopped successfully.
The Windows Time service is starting.
The Windows Time service was started successfully.
    Next:
    w32tm /resync /rediscover
Sending resync command to local computer
The computer did not resync because no time data was available.
    Next:
Did a restart of the server and repeated:
    w32tm /resync /rediscover
Sending resync command to local computer
The computer did not resync because no time data was available.
    Next:
    Ran the following:
    w32tm /query /configuration
    C:\>w32tm /query /configuration

    Any feedback/guidance appreciated!!

    Hi,

    Answer an interesting question?
Create a wiki article about it!

  • Domain either does not exist or could not be contacted

    Ok where to start!
    Existing 2003 domain (2x DC)
    New 2012 server - i have followed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG5K6B7hgRU as i hadn't done a migration to 2012
Everything was generally ok, Active Directory appeared in sync as i had the users/computers etc before seizing the roles and these where confirmed by using 'netdom query fsmo'
    Now there was FRS errors in the event log;
File Replication Service is scanning the data in the system volume. Computer SERVER-AD cannot become a domain controller until this process is complete. The system volume will then be shared as SYSVOL.
    and
The File Replication Service has detected an enabled disk write cache on the drive containing the directory c:\windows\ntfrs\jet on the computer SERVER-AD. The File Replication Service might not recover when power to the drive is interrupted and critical
    updates are lost.
The 2003 SBS log was suggesting it was in a RNL_WRAP_ERROR so i looked at one of the log and said to set the value one '1' for 'Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore' and this is where i think it went pear shaped!!!!!!
Entry was ' Setting the "Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore" registry parameter to 1 will cause the following recovery steps to be taken to automatically recover from this error state.' --- this is still set to value '1' do i need to change
    to '0'????
So running through the FRS log entries i have ' Setting the "Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore" registry parameter to 1 will cause the following recovery steps to be taken to automatically recover from this error state.'
'The File Replication Service moved the preexisting files in c:\windows\sysvol\domain to c:\windows\sysvol\domain\NtFrs_PreExisting___See_EventLog.
The File Replication Service may delete the files in c:\windows\sysvol\domain\NtFrs_PreExisting___See_EventLog at any time. Files can be saved from deletion by copying them out of c:\windows\sysvol\domain\NtFrs_PreExisting___See_EventLog. Copying the files
into c:\windows\sysvol\domain may lead to name conflicts if the files already exist on some other replicating partner.
In some cases, the File Replication Service may copy a file from c:\windows\sysvol\domain\NtFrs_PreExisting___See_EventLog into c:\windows\sysvol\domain instead of replicating the file from some other replicating partner. '
'The File Replication Service successfully added this computer to the following replica set:
        "DOMAIN SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)"
Information related to this event is shown below:
    Computer DNS name is "rookesbs.Rooke.local"
Replica set member name is "ROOKESBS"
Replica set root path is "c:\windows\sysvol\domain"
Replica staging directory path is "c:\windows\sysvol\staging\domain"
Replica working directory path is "c:\windows\ntfrs\jet"'
'The File Replication Service successfully added the connections shown below to the replica set:
        "DOMAIN SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)"
          "rooketerm.Rooke.local"
          "SERVER-AD.Rooke.local"
          "rooketerm.Rooke.local"
          "SERVER-AD.Rooke.local" '
SERVER-AD is the NEW server (master) and rooketerm is another 2003 member server
'The File Replication Service is having trouble enabling replication from ROOKETERM to ROOKESBS for c:\windows\sysvol\domain using the DNS name rooketerm.Rooke.local.'  --- and getting the same for SERVER-AD
Now the SYSVOL folder SHARE had gone but looking there is a backup in that  folder?
NOW i have 'NtFrs_PreExisting___See_EventLog' in the 2003 SBS SYSVOL folder -- can i use this?
I DONT HAVE A BACKUP OF SYSVOL -- i can maybe able to get an old backup of Backup exec SRS but NAS has been down :(
Now naturally how things are i can't access Active Directory on any server as it says not available/found etc
IS this going to stop users logging on in the morning??
    REALLY need some urgent help!

I also ran a NSLOOKUP to make sure DNS was ok - as i changed the order of DNS on SERVER-AD as the 2003 SBS server was first however those appear to be in sync anyhow - results of the lookup

    Hi,
Were there other error codes logged in Event Viewer?
Regarding Event ID 1055, the following article can be referred to for troubleshooting.
Event ID 1055 — Group Policy Preprocessing (Security)
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc727272(v=ws.10).aspx
Based on the report you posted, this issue may be related to FRS replication service. As a result, we can use ntfrsutl tool to check whether the replication service is healthy.
Regarding this point, the following articles can be referred to for more information.

In addition, we can also try doing a non-authoritative Sysvol restore on Windows Server 2008 DC to see whether the issue persists.

  • The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file...

    Hello all-
I am currently trying to configure group policy (specifically folder redirects) from a new Windows Server 2008 in my home... the server acts as both an AD DS and file server for 4 client computers, all running Windows Vista Ultimate.
Here are the steps I am currently taking:
I create a new Group Policy called All Users and Computers and apply it to the All Users and Computers OU, which contains exactly what it says (all users and computers in the domain).
    I verify that a new folder was created in \\<FQDN>\sysvol\<FQDN>\Policies.  The new folder created is named {6479C8E0-3134-4B4F-B047-7ADD51684684}
I change the GPO Enforced setting to Enforced.
I attempt to use the gpupdate command to see if the group policy can be updated successfully.  In a command prompt, I type gpupdate <enter>.  I receive the message 'Updating Policy...' then after about 15 seconds the message 'User Policy update has completed successfully.'
I keep the cmd window open.  After about 10 seconds another message apperas which says "Computer policy could not be updated successfully.  The following errors were encountered: The processing of Group Policy failed.  Windows attempted to read the file \\<FQDN>\sysvol\<FQDN>\Policies\{6AC1786C-016F-11D2-945F-00C04Fb984F9}\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful.  Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following:
    a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.
    b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).
    c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled.
To diagnose the failure, review the event log or invoke gpmc.msc to access information about Group Policy results."
I confirm that the error code is #3 using the Event Log, "The system cannot find the file specificed"
Of course the system cannot find the file specified because the folder does not exist in the sysvol folder. I am wondering why Windows is trying to read from this location when it does not exist, and is not the new group policy I created!  I have no other group policies linked or enforced to any other OU/Domain/etc.  Any help resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all and thanks for the help.  First a few things:
I understand that the DC should not be running RRAS, but this a simple server being used in aa home environment by 4 users and getting another server just for RRAS would be overkill.
Secondly, I currently have it so that while the router is handling DHCP, I have reserved a fixed IP for the server, so it always has 192.168.1.100.  If I were to use the server as the DHCP, what would my hardware configuration have to look like?  I currently have the router plugged into the ISP modem, and then server plugged into the router.  All other clients connect to the router wirelessly.
Here's the dcdiag output.  I tried dcdiag /fix but to no avail.

  • Upgrade to Server 2012 R2 domain controllers from 2003

I am at a loss as to what I did wrong here. Everything seems to be working fine except for one subnet (which is behind a hardware firewall).
We had two Server 2003 domain controllers and one of them was failing.  I raised the forest functional level of our old primary domain controllers to 2003.  I built the first replacement Server 2012 R2 domain controller.  Added the AD DS roles
and promoted it as a domain controller.  I let it sit for a couple days.  The FSMO roles were currently being handled by our other 2003 domain controller.  Once this had been sitting for a while (don't recall how long) I ran dcpromo on the failing
server and demoted it.  Once demoted I shut it down and pulled it out of the rack.  I then built our second 2012 R2 server and gave it the same IP as the failing one.  Installed the AD DS roles and integrated DNS as prompted by the wizard.
I then made it the operations master for Schema master, Domain naming master, PDC, RID pool manager, and Infrastructure master.  Then I ran dcpromo on the second 2003 domain controller to demote it and removed it from the network.  I then demoted
the first new controller (DC03) changed the hostname and IP to the name and IP of the second 2003 controller and promoted it again.  I'm not sure at what point things broke, but everything works from the same subnet that the domain controllers are in,
just not a second subnet that is through a hardware firewall.  I don't see anything getting blocked while watching firewall logs so I don't think the firewall is the issue.
Here is the dcdiag and ipconfig from the first controller (which has all 5 FSMO roles).

When I try to bind a machine to the domain I get an error message that says "
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for domain "wgd.inet":
The error was: "This operation returned because the timeout period expired."
    (error code 0x000005B4 ERROR_TIMEOUT)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.wgd.inet
The DNS servers used by this computer for name resolution are not responding. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:
    10.240.1.24
    10.240.1.23
Verify that this computer is connected to the network, that these are the correct DNS server IP addresses, and that at least one of the DNS servers is running.
Please let me know if I'm missing something or if there are other things I can check.
    Thanks!
I forgot to mention that after the 2003 domain controllers were out of the environment, I raised the domain and forest functional level to 2012 R2.  All clients in the environment are Windows XP Pro or above.  The XP Pro boxes will be going away as
soon as our vendor supports their software to run on Windows 7.

We now have 2 2012 R2 DCs. The 2003 DCs are gone. Metadata from the old DCs is all cleaned up. DNS seems to be working fine in 3 out of 4 subnets. The 4th is behind a hardware firewall and I can see the IP address of the machine I am trying to bind to the
domain connecting to the two new domain controllers but the client machine that is trying to bind gives an error.  An Active Directory Domain Controller for the domain wgd.inet could not be contacted.  It seems that this is just a DNS issue for one
particular subnet (10.240.2.0/24).  This subnet is setup in AD Sites and Services\Sites\Subnets\10.240.2.0/24 (Site: Default-First-Site-Name).
When trying to do anything with nslookup from the 10.240.2.0/24 subnet it times out.  The route is there and I can watch it connect through our hardware firewall over port 53.
