Ripping a DVD into imovie help

Can someone help me please.. My son has just done a primary school production and i've bought the DVD which in our house will last 2 weeks.. I really want to copy this dvd and keep in on my hard drive and pedit it in imovie... What do i need here.. I'm using a macbook pro early 2011 and lion.. Thanks

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Ripping off a DVD into iMovie

My boss gave me a DVD of some older footage he wants me to put into some advertisement trailers for him.  I am using iMovie to do all the organizing and editing and want to know how I can get the video into iMovie.  I assume I have to rip it off the DVD, but don't know how to do it or what programs to use.  Thanks for any and all help,
    Eric

This tip will show you how to import your home movie on DVD into iMovie 11 for editing. It will not work on commercial, copy-protected DVDs. (Ripping commercial DVDs is against the Terms of Use of the Apple Discussions).
DVDs are encoded by iDVD into MPEG2, which iMovie cannot edit. So you need to convert the DVD into a codec that iMovie can edit. For highest quality, I recommend that you convert the DVD to Apple Intermediate Codec. There is a free tool called MPEG Streamclip that will do this. You will also need to install the Apple QuickTIme MPEG2 Playback Component.
    Here are the details.
    1) Download and install the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component ($20) - available online from Apple.
    2) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    3) Start MPEG Streamclip
    4) Insert your DVD into your Mac. If DVD Player or Front Row starts automatically, quit those.
    5) Open a Finder window. Navigate to the DVD.
    6) Drag the Video_TS folder from your DVD and drop it into MPEG Streamclip.
    7) If MPEG Streamclip offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes.
    8) Use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
    9) Optional steps.
9a) Optional: You can deinterlace your footage in this step, if you like. If you don't know which is best, try a short clip both ways. I usually do not deinterlace.
9b) Optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
9c) Optional: If you don't want to make one huge clip out of your DVD, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 8 through 10 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
    10) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
    11) Open iMovie.
    12) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/Movies... and choose the file you saved in steps 8, 9, 10.
    13) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.

  • Downloading a DVD into iMovie or iphoto

A friend shot a video and burned a copy in iMovie for me, is there anyway to download the DVD into iMovie on my Mac?
    Thanks!

I've been looking into the same thing.
I have Ripit, but the settings I've tried don't seem to work well with iMovie, as I can see iMovie is re-encoding the movies on import.
I've messed with iSkysoft's dvd ripper and it has a setting to export to iMovie, which I tried in the demo and it seemed to import much faster (only the thumbnails needed to be built)
It's a bit more expensive than the other suggestion, but possibly a bit easier too.

  • Inputing from dvd into imovie

Can I place a normal dvd into the built in drive in the side of my iMac and input all (or even better - part) of the DVD into iMovie. I am wanting to take a small 'grab' of a standard commercial DVD.

A commercial DVD is copy protected, which makes ripping it hard. Depending on the copyright laws in YOUR country, it may or may not be legal to do. That's even if you own the DVD.
Assuming the laws in your country allows you to do it:

  • Re user tip: How can I import a homemade DVD into iMovie for editing? - I've followed instructions so far so good, until I get to "You can then FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. "  How do I do that?

Re AppleMan 1958 excellent user tip: How can I import a homemade DVD into iMovie for editing? -
I've followed instructions with success until  "You can then FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. "  How do I do that?
I installed MGEG Streamclip 193b8 and used their utility to install quicktimempeg2 and got a message stating it was successfully installed.  (I'm on latest Maverick 10.9.2 on iMac)  Then I dragged the VIDEO_TS file from my home DVD into the streamclip app.  It asked which of 4 files to use, and I selected the first one.  Streamclip played the video with the sound.  so far so good. but now I cannot figure how to use quicktime player 10.3 to export this vob file out of streamclip.

Thank you for your quick reply and for clearing up my confusion.  I'm exporting the first section now.  I choose the smallest size, 3x4 but I'd prefer to go higher as this DVD was originally a VHS home movie.  I'm wondering if after three conversions (VHS,->DVD->MPEG) the resolution will be so poor as to not support a larger size frame?  If it can, what size should I select when I export?

  • Loading family DVD into iMovie

Ok, I know this has probably been answered 1,000 times here, but I can't quite find what I need.
I am a HS football coach and do the video editing for the team. One of the parents just handed me several DVD's of his video recordings. Is it possible to get the clips/contents of the DVD into iMovie so I can include them in my game cutups? I have never worked with these and have tried to avoid them just for this reason.
When I open the disk icon I see a single folder VIDEO_TS, and several folders within that one.
    What do I do?

    IHS Vikings

Well, maybe not that many but enough to make it easy to find what you need.
As long as the material is not copy protected, you can open and convert the TS files with a free application called MPEGSTREAMCLIP. You can find it online. The application comes with a guide that explains how to use it.
Keep in mind that the files on the DVDs are highly compressed. To bring them into iMovie, they will be converted by MPEGSTREAMCLIP, but there will be some loss in quality.
iMovie uses its own .dv format and can handle Quicktime, both of which are available options within MPEGSTREAMCLIP.

  • How do I get a dvd into iMovie for editing?

I want to edit my teaching videos. They are on DVDs. How do I get them into iMovie as all the tutorials I have seen only speak of loading from a camera?

    http://www.fcpbook.com/Video6.html
This should help. Rather than using DV which iMovie doesn't handle well for no earthly reason, you should substitute the Apple Intermediate Codec, which may give you better results.
DVDs are very heavily compressed standard definition media, so converting it will not make it any better.

  • Hitachi DZ-HS301SW importing files into imovie, help!

ok i have been frustrating myself with this for a while so im hoping someone can help me, i have a hitachi DZ-HS301SW dvd/hdd it isnt recognised by imovie when i connect it so i used the provided software Pixe VRF Browser EX to get the videos off my camera. As far as i can tell i need to buy a program to convert these files to dv, if i want to use them imovie? any help would be much appreciated

use the following link to get a freeware app that works great for converting .mpg to dv. I use it with my hitachi DZ-HS300A.
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/SVCDon_a_Macintosh.html#edit_convertMPEG
The program is MPEG Streamclip. The link also gives a brief instruction on how to use Streamclip.
    Hope this helps.

  • Ripping a DVD -- can you help?

I have DVD's of my son's football games. He needs a highlight video, and I need to be able to go into the DVD's of each game and select key plays, copy these, and place them on a new DVD I create - a highlight DVD of his best plays. I don't have the original video footage, just the DVD's for each game. Is it possible with some type of program for me to do this? Can you help? Never made a highlight DVD before. Thanks for your time and help!

  • Puting dvds into Imovie

hello, I wonder if anyone can explain to me in idiot terms how to transfer film that I have recorded on my DVD camera to Imovie.
I am using 8cm discs, and when I put the disc into my Mac the disc plays in Idvd fine, however, I want to edit and want to get the film on the disc into Imovies but I just can't seem to do anything other than play the disc in Idvd.
    any help would be great,
    many thanks in advance,
    regards
    Tony

    Hi Tony,
I suspect that it plays in DVD Player not iDVD right...
If that is the case then the DVD is in a standard .vob file format. You can use Handbrake or OpenShiiva to convert it to a format that iMovie can use.

  • I imported video from a card into IPhoto and it plays in slow motion.  Any suggestions? Would importing into IMovie help at all?

    Hello
I am importing video and pics into Iphoto and the video plays in slow motion.  Would importing in Imovie help or does it have something to do with the type of camera or file the video is in?

It should. So they aren't shown in the Last Import smart album, right? Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.
