  • Problem in cloning a Database through RMAN

    Hi,
    I have a requirement to clone a Database of size 500G.
    The problem here is, I don't have enough disk space to take the backup and clone it later...
    Is there any utility in RMAN which clones the database, without demanding the 500G disk space to stage the Database, in a serial fashion i.e. TS by TS or some other way?

    I'm curious to know how Oracle is performing the datacopy operation in this case, if it's not backing up the database?
    Will it do copy a file --> restore ->> copy another like that?
    This will create a process that sets up a network channel between the servers and will use an 'ftp'-like process to copy the database. Including archivelogs such that it can recover the database when done.

    Another question I have is how to specify the paths for new datafiles if the destination is using ASM?run
    { set newname for datafile 1 to '+DATA';
    set newname for datafile <last> to '+DATA';

    and whoever said disks are cheap have not tried to purchase them even though it is a requirement to do business. "Hey, let's have more data, but you can't have disk on which to store it. Just use an etch-a-sketch."

    RMAN Active cloning command below is used to clone the database from one host "A" to another host "B".

    spfile                               string      /app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3/db/dbs/spfiletestDB.oraWhat could be the cause for the spfile missing?
    I have been advised below as workaround;
    1. Create spfile or pfile from memory and bounce the db to fix this issue.
    2. RMAN Active clone script specified with the the pfile clause.
    For example.
    duplicate target database to testDB  from active database file=/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3/db/dbs/inittestDB.ora;  Would appreciate the advise on this.

    Hello;
    What could be the cause for the spfile missing?
    This :
    duplicate target database to testDB from active database nofilenamecheckInstead of this :
    duplicate target database to testDB from active database spfile nofilenamecheckSee :
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/rcmdupdb.htm

  • RMAN restore from active database, ASM

    I'm attempting to refresh a stage database from a prod database using RMAN restore from active database. Both are on ASM. After working through various hurdles, I've got one issue I'm a bit stuck on. I've got a handful of data files that do NOT have OMF names (ie MSTRDATA/mstrmdpd/datafile/gsa_indx instead of MSTRDATA/mstrmdpd/datafile/gsa_indx.351.714779777) and these are failing when I do the restore. The syntax I'm using in RMAN is as follows:
    duplicate target database to dwstage
    from active database
    spfile parameter_value_convert 'dwprod','dwstage'
    SET DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT '+DWPROD','+DWSTAGE'
    SET LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT '+DWPROD','+DWSTAGE';
    The error message I'm getting is this:
    RMAN-03009: failure of backup command on ORA_DISK_1 channel at 04/21/2011 13:26:24
    ORA-17628: Oracle error 19505 returned by remote Oracle server
    continuing other job steps, job failed will not be re-run
    Normally from what I've seen/read this error can be traced back to needing to pre-create the directories for the controlfiles etc, but since 90% of the datafiles copied correctly...
    Any suggestions as to a way around this, or am I going to be forced to restore from a backupset?

    This fails saying that "ORA-12528: TNS:listener: all appropriate instances are blocking new connections" which is quite normal given that the listener is havig a handle in BLOCKED state for this AUXDB as it is in NOMOUNT state.
    Could you please help me on how to proceed?
    One option can be to create the controlfile manually and mount the instance before doing the duplicate. I hope Rman can continue from there.
    Another option is to go for backup based duplicate.
    Is there any other way to go?
    Provide static registration on AUXILIARY side for your auxiliary instance and try again.For example change listener.ora file as
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
      (SID_LIST =
        (SID_DESC =
          (GLOBAL_DBNAME = AUXDB)
          (ORACLE_HOME = <your oracle home>)
          (SID_NAME = AUXDB)
    LISTENER =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <auxiliary host/ip>)(PORT = 1521))
      )And restart listener on auxiliary host then try again

    I am new to DBA Learning how to look things up in the documentation is time well spent investing in your career. To that end, you should drop everything else you are doing and do the following:
    Go to tahiti.oracle.com.
    Drill down to your product and version.
    <b><i><u>BOOKMARK THAT LOCATION</u></i></b>
    Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what is available here. Take special note of the "books" and "search" tabs. Under the "books" tab you will find the complete documentation library.
    Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what <b><i><u>kind</u></i></b> of documentation is available there by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab.
    Open the Reference Manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to get familiar with what <b><i><u>kind</u></i></b> of information is available there.
    Do the same with the SQL Reference Manual.
    Do the same with the Utilities manual.
    You don't have to read the above in depth. They are <b><i><u>reference</b></i></u> manuals. Just get familiar with <b><i><u>what</b></i></u> is there to <b><i><u>be</b></i></u> referenced. Ninety percent of the questions asked on this forum can be answered in less than 5 minutes by simply searching one of the above manuals.
    Then set yourself a plan to dig deeper.
    - Read a chapter a day from the Concepts Manual.
    - Take a look in your alert log. One of the first things listed at startup is the initialization parms with non-default values. Read up on each one of them (listed in your alert log) in the Reference Manual.
    - Take a look at your listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, and sqlnet.ora files. Go to the Network Administrators manual and read up on everything you see in those files.
    - When you have finished reading the Concepts Manual, do it again.
    Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.
    and I need your help to perform this. I have done a installation of a database but cloning I am doing for the first time. The database size which I want to clone is of 6GB, so i won't think it will take much time to clone the database.

    제품 : RMAN

    RMAN BACKUPS AND ARCHIVED LOG ISSUES
    =====================================
    Scenario #1:
    1)RMAN이 모든 archived log들을 삭제할 때 실패하는 경우.
    database는 두 개의 archive destination에 archive file을 생성한다.
    다음과 같은 스크립트를 수행하여 백업후에 archived redo logfile을 삭제한다.
    run {
    allocate channel c1 type 'sbt_tape';
    backup database;
    backup archivelog all delete input;
    Archived redo logfile 삭제 유무를 확인하기 위해 CROSSCHECK 수행시 다음과
    같은 메시지가 발생함.
    RMAN> change archivelog all crosscheck;
    RMAN-03022: compiling command: change
    RMAN-06158: validation succeeded for archived log
    RMAN-08514: archivelog filename=
    /oracle/arch/dest2/arcr_1_964.arc recid=19 stamp=368726072
    2) 원인분석
    이 문제는 에러가 아니다. RMAN은 여러 개의 arhive directory중 하나의
    directoy안에 있는 archived file들만 삭제한다. 그래서 나머지 directory안의
    archived log file들은 삭제되지 않고 남게 되는 것이다.
    3) 해결책
    RMAN이 강제로 모든 directory안의 archived log file들을 삭제하게 하기 위해서는
    여러 개의 채널을 할당하여 각 채널이 각 archive destination안의 archived file을
    백업하고 삭제하도록 해야 한다.
    이것은 아래와 같이 구현될 수 있다.
    run {
    allocate channel t1 type 'sbt_tape';
    allocate channel t2 type 'sbt_tape';
    backup
    archivelog like '/oracle/arch/dest1/%' channel t1 delete input
    archivelog like '/oracle/arch/dest2/%' channel t2 delete input;
    Scenario #2:
    1)RMAN이 archived log를 찾을 수 없어 백업이 실패하는 경우.
    이 시나리오에서 database를 incremental backup한다고 가정한다.
    이 경우 RMAN은 recover시 archived redo log대신에 incremental backup을 사용할
    수 있기 때문에 백업 후 모든 archived redo log를 삭제하기 위해 OS utility를 사용한다.
    그러나 다음 번 backup시 다음과 같은 Error를 만나게 된다.
    RMAN-6089: archive log NAME not found or out of sync with catalog
    2) 원인분석
    이 문제는 OS 명령을 사용하여 archived log를 삭제하였을 경우 발생한다. 이때 RMAN은
    archived log가 삭제되었다는 것을 알지 못한다. RMAN-6089는 RMAN이 OS 명령에 의해
    삭제된 archived log가 여전히 존재하다고 생각하고 백업하려고 시도하였을 때 발생하게 된다.
    3) 해결책
    가장 쉬운 해결책은 archived log를 백업할 때 DELETE INPUT option을 사용하는 것이다.
    예를 들면
    run {
    allocate channel c1 type 'sbt_tape';
    backup archivelog all delete input;
    두 번째로 가장 쉬운 해결책은 OS utility를 사용하여 archived log를 삭제한 후에
    다음과 같은 명령어를 RMAN prompt상에서 수행하는 것이다.
    RMAN>allocate channel for maintenance type disk;
    RMAN>change archivelog all crosscheck;
    Oracle 8.0:
         RMAN> change archivelog '/disk/path/archivelog_name' validate;
    Oracle 8i:
    RMAN> change archivelog all crosscheck ;
    Oracle 9i:
    RMAN> crosscheck archivelog all ;
    catalog의 COMPATIBLE 파라미터가 8.1.5이하로 설정되어 있으면 RMAN은 찾을 수 없는
    모든 archived log의 status를 "DELETED" 로 셋팅한다. 만약에 COMPATIBLE이 8.1.6이상으로
    설정되어 있으면 RMAN은 Repository에서 record를 삭제한다.

    Very strange, I issue following command in RMAN on both primary and standby machine, but it they don't delete the 1_55_758646076.dbf, I find in v$archived_log, this "/home/oracle/app/oracle/dataguard/1_55_758646076.dbf" had already been applied.
    RMAN> connect target /
    RMAN> CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO APPLIED ON ALL STANDBY;
    old RMAN configuration parameters:
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO APPLIED ON ALL STANDBY;
    new RMAN configuration parameters:
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO APPLIED ON ALL STANDBY;
    new RMAN configuration parameters are successfully stored

  • RMAN backup for two databases with similar DBID

    We have two databases with SID 'uiivc' and 'uiivc1' running from one of the HP Unix 11.11 PA-RISC server. I did configured RMAN backup for both databases. But it is found that both databases have same DBID [connected to target database: UIIVC (DBID=3005194057) for UIIVC & connected to target database: UIIVC1 (DBID=3005194057) for UIIVC1] and backup configured via crontab seen running fine with full backup at weekend and archivelog backup at daily for both databases. Now my query is that will it create any issues at time of restoration since both databases have similar DBID? Does RMAN uses DBID to distinguish databases?
    Kindly help to clarifiy

    Hi Tycho,
    I configured RMAN to store controlfile backups in different folders on each database.
    UIIVC database:
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/hot_backups/rmanbkp/uiivc/cf%F';
    UIIVC1 database:
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/hot_backups/rmanbkp/uiivc1/cf%F';
    Server output:
    uii-79:uiivc1 > ls -lrt /hot_backups/rmanbkp/uiivc

    And I saw backups are placing in the respective folders too. So with these settings, can I safely assume there is no issues with RMAN backup and restore having similar DBID for two databases running on same server?

    Hi,
    ORA-19504: failed TO CREATE file "\\remote\save\"make sure you have created this directory and change it's ownership (chown command)to oracle.
    also make sure that oracle user has permission to write to this direcotry (chmod command)

  • Cloning a database from data guard

    Hi Gurus,
    I have a situation where I am using 11g R1 11.1.0.7
    Primary database in server prodsrv and active data guard read only db in drsrv host.
    I have to clone a new dev database in drsrv database. since 11g R1 supports clone from active database, i thought we can use active data guard to clone a new database.
    is that possible? my trial didn't work out.
