How to continue backing up the rest of archives?????I'd say that you start by taking a new full-backup (probably using RMAN), so that you can recover in the event of a failure. Then, you can do as so many before me have suggested, copy 'n paste the error message here, so that we can help you.

  • Taking daily rman backup of archivelogs

    Hi,
    Technical info:
    OS: Windows 2003 EE
    DB: Oracle 10g EE v. 10.2.0.3
    DB size: 30 GB
    I need help to create a rman script or suggestions for creating a Job in Grid Control.
    I want to take a daily (monday to friday) rman backup of archivelogs in the time interval 9 AM to 5 PM. The script should be run every 2 hours. I want the script to remove the archivelogs that are older than 4 days. The retention policy is 9 days.
    Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

    Hi,
    Yes, I have realized that I can create different jobs in Grid Control one for each day and each time: for example: at 9 AM, 11 AM, etc until 5 PM.
    Each job performs a backup archivelog and removes those backups that are older than 4 days.
    But I have to create 25 jobs (5 jobs for each day).
    Is there a simpler way to achieve the same result?

  • Got RMAN error when running RMAN backup of archivelogs on physical standby database

    Got below error when running RMAN backup of datafiles and archivelogs on physical standby database.
    RMAN-06820: WARNING: failed to archive current log at primary database
    ORACLE error from target database:
    ORA-17629: Cannot connect to the remote database server

    Could anyone help me? Thanks,

    Hello;
    When you connect RMAN to the source database as TARGET you must specify a password even if RMAN uses operating system authentication.
    So the errors ORA-17627 and ORA-00942 appear to be cause and effect.
    What version of Oracle?  ( 11.2.0.4 according to the tag )
    Can you post your backup script?
    Best Regards

  • RMAN backup with archivelog (pros/cons)

    When performing a "backup database with archivelogs" where does rman store the info contained in the archive logs. If I do a backup like this do I still need to keep the archive logs out on disk? Does this increase time to do backups? I have some production databases that are close to 500gb. Wondering what the pros/cons are doing a backup this way.
    Thanks All!

The info stored in the archive logs (what you asked about, but probably not what you meant) is stored in the archive logs. The backups of those logs are stored in a backup set. The information about the logs is stored in the control file.

    You have backed them up, right? Archivelogs are not actively used by the running database, right? If you don't delete them after they are backed up, let me know who you buy your disk storage solutions from, as I'd like to buy stock in that company.
    Does this increase time to do backups? Anything you do "increases time to do" vs. not doing something. (The most efficient SELECT statement is the one not executed). The question is does this have a practical, measurable degradation of performance that is intolerable to my organization? The answer undoubtedly "no".

    Pros are you can recover your database.
    Cons are, you can't recover your database.
    And it looks like we need to point out that the housekeeping of your archivelogs can and should be handled by rman, not outside of it. Look at "backup archivelog not backed up n times" and "delete archivelog backed up n times", and other variations of 'backup archivelog' and 'delete archivelog'.

    To answer your question you can probably just create the UNDO tablespace ... no harm in trying.
    But there is substantial harm in running a production system, as you are doing, and not being in archive log mode.
    Unless your production database is a toy holding nothing more important than your mother's cookie recipes I highly recommend you don't even take the time to blink your eyes before you enable archive logging: What you have is the moral equivalent to performing surgery without first washing your hands.The production system is in archivelog mode, I just didnt want to FTP the log files over too as it doesn't have to be a completely recent backup. It doesn't even have to be from the last month.

  • Rman backup with archivelog from tape

    Hi,
    We are doing a level 0 backup on sunday and then level1 backup on all the weekdays.
    The archive logs generated are 1GB each and are more in number.
    IF we include archivelog in level1 backup , its taking around 12hrs to complete.
    So we are thinking of not including the archivelog in level 1 backup,but then we can daily move the archive logs to another location .
    So archivelogs will not be in the rman backup.
    So in case of restore, how can we apply the archive logs required? rman will not identify the archive logs...how can we manually apply the required archive logs
    Please help

    Information about ArchiveLogs is available in the controlfile as I outlined in my response post in the thread How to find out which archived logs needed to recover a hot backup?
    However, if your CONTROLFILE_RECORD_KEEP_TIME is 7 days and you are attempting a restore of a backup 14 days or 28 days or 35 days old ... you may be out of luck.
    You'd need to maintain a listing of ArchiveLogs in some manner (e.g. a log file outside the database that you periodically update with information about ArchiveLogs).
    It is much better to also backup the ArchiveLogs using RMAN. Don't forget to ensure that controlfile backups or autobackups are also taken and retained.

  • RMAN backup with archivelogs.

    Dear all,
    Can i delete all archivels after the RMAN backup. Why do we backup archivelogs with RMAN backup. I think it is useless.
    Please can somebody explane this.
    Regards
    upul indika

    Why do we backup archivelogs with RMAN backup. I
    think it is useless. You think backing up archivelogs is useless ? Did you ever recover a database ? Did you ever simulate a disaster recovery ? If yes, how did you do it ? If not, then you should have a look at the documentation
    Anyway, you can (or even you should) delete archivelogs after the RMAN backup.

  • RMAN backup isssue..

    Hi
    I am using 10g asm diskflash for my archivelog destnation and rman backups...
    my current sequence number is 452
    when I go to rman prompt and give command
    backup archivelog all;
    it starts from 1 to 450...
    previous to this
    I backed up
    backup archivelog delete input;
    so it should delete the archive logs from original location.
    then when u give backup archivelog all;
    it start from 1... this is my question it should start from where I stopped
    or I should only give backup archivelog
    second ques??
    what is way i get rid of all archive logs...
    they are 3 months old...
    I configured retention policy of recovery windows of 1 day and redundancy 1
    I only need one backup and backup of archivelog of atmost yesterday..
    ineed to get rid of all other backups, archivelogs;
    How do I achive this..
    Mny thanks..

    Hi,
    Is it the first time that you are trying to backup using RMAN? Have you deleted the old archive logs manually?
    if so, just issue
    CHANGE ARCHIVE LOG ALL CROSSCHECK
    at RMAN prompt. RMAN will sync the catalog with the missing archivelogs and you will be able to do your backups.

  • RMAN backup error in R&D Server

    i am doing some R&D in my 10g test db....
    i deleted the last archive log file...then i tried to do rman backup plus archivelog all;
    but i am getting an error...then i copy the deleted file in the same location...then the backup is working fine...
    suppose if this situation comes in production db what should i do....am i have to wait for the next archive log generation or i have to alter system switch log file;
    thanks

    Hi,
    RMAN>change archivelog all crosscheck;
    If below error commes then Your options are either to restore the missing file(s), or to perform a crosscheck. To perform a crosscheck,
    run the above command from within RMAN
    It is advisable to perform a full backup of the database at this point.
    When an archive log crosscheck is performed, RMAN checks each archive log in turn to make sure that it exists on disk (or tape).
    Those that are missing are marked as unavailable. If you have got missing logs, this won't bring them back. It will allow you to get
    past this error and back-up the database though.

  • Create a database from 8i RMAN backup

    Hi,
    I am in need to recover some historic data from a historic database's RMAN backup.
    The situation is ... I have one old RMAN backup of a 8i database which includes datafiles, archivellog files and control files. Init.ora file is also available.
    I have installed the 8i software in a host and created the oracle service through ORADIM and pwd file through ORAPWD utility. Then copied the init.ora file under 'C:\Oracle\ADMIN\ORCL\PFILE' and the RMAN backup files under 'C:\Oracle\Ora81\DATABASE' folder.
    Now I can start the instance with the init.ora file but can not mount as control files are not there. when I try to restore the control files through RMAN as...
    RMAN> run
    2> {
    3> restore controlfile;
    4> }

    RMAN>
    Now without the catalog database how can I restore the control files and the database from the RMAN backup?
    I think the old RMAN metadata was stored in catalog database.
    Any suggestion please?
    regards

    Sorry I wrongly said that I do not have the DBID, I have DBID but I have controlfile backup as RMAN backupset, not in Binary. So even if I set DBID, RMAN asks for the catalog database, which is not available.

  • About RMAN backup !!!!

    Dear Friends,
    Let my production server running starts from 1st June .
    In 15 june , I take the First rman full (or level0) backup using the command :
    RMAN> backup database plus archivelog;
    In 20 June I take 2nd rman full backup using : RMAN> backup database plus archivelog;
    Again in 30 June , I take the Third(3rd) rman full (or level 0) backup using the command :
    RMAN> backup database plus archivelog;
    And also my rman policy set as :
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1;
    In the above scenario , I have the following questions :
    1) When I take the Third(3rd) backup then is it the First RMAN backup goes to obsolete as per my rman policy ( RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1) ?
    2) Is the above all RMAN backup make a link between them ?
    3) If my first RMAN backup goes to obsolete and I have to delete the First RMAN backup , then which types of problem I face ? Can I go to previous state(suppose I need to back in 1st June) of my server if I delete First rman backup ?
    4) when I take 3rd rman full backup , then is it all information from 1st january of the server are stored in the 3rd backup ? i.e., is the 3rd rman backup stores all the previous two rman backups information ?so that If I delete the previous two backup , then I get all information form 3rd rman backup .what is the actual scenario ......
    plz help me to make clear concept about it .......
    thx in advance .....

    1) When I take the Third(3rd) backup then is it the First RMAN backup goes to obsolete as per my rman policy ( RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1) ?The REDUNDANCY parameter of the CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY command specifies how many backups of each datafile and control file that RMAN should keep. In other words, if the number of backups for a specific datafile or control file exceeds the REDUNDANCY setting, then RMAN considers the extra backups as obsolete.So as in your case the redundancy is 1 so the 1st and 2nd backup are obsolete.
    To check the obsolete backups run
    rman> report obsolete;
    To delete them
    rman> delete obsolete;
    Link:[http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/setup005.htm#BRBSC400]
    Is the above all RMAN backup make a link between them ?I am not very much clear with the question.The RMAN information is stored in the controlfile.You can also create a new recovery catalog and register the target database. The RMAN repository records in the control file will be copied to the new recovery catalog.
    when I take 3rd rman full backup , then is it all information from 1st january of the server are stored in the 3rd backup ? i.e., is the 3rd rman backup stores all the previous two rman backups information ?so that If I delete the previous two backup , then I get all information form 3rd rman backupThe 3rd RMAN backup will contain all the information of the DB from the very 1st day.You will get all the information in the 3rd rman backup as its a level 0 or what we say a FULL DATABASE BACKUP.If suppose the 3rd rman backup would have been a incremental backup, then you would have required a full backup, previous to the incremental one, so that after restoring the full backup, you restore the incremental to recover the DB completely.

    [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/bkup004.htm#BRBSC133]
    Forgot to answer the 3rd question
    3) If my first RMAN backup goes to obsolete and I have to delete the First RMAN backup , then which types of problem I face ? Can I go to previous state(suppose I need to back in 1st June) of my server if I delete First rman backup ?well, i am not very much sure , but i think is , if you have the 1st rman backup pieces physically present on the disk, you can catalog it and then use the rman command to restore the data from it of till 1st june.
    To catalog the backup pieces use
    rman> catalog backuppiece 'filename';

  • Undo tablespace recovery from RMAN backup

    Hi,
    Lets's assume we have RMAN backup and archivelog backups, and now
    my undo tablespace's disk crashed ,how can i recover?
    Can i recover while database is up?
    Thanks,

    to recover UNDO tablespace from RMAN backup you must shutdown the database and start it in the MOUNT state to recover the missing files as follows
    rman target /
    RUN
    STARTUP MOUNT;
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch3 TYPE Disk;
    RESTORE datafile 'c:\u01\prod3\undo01.dbf';
    RECOVER datafile 'c:\u01\prod3\undo01.dbf';
    ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch3;

  • Datafile lost. No backups or archivelogs

    DB version: 11.2.0.2
    In our newly created DB which is in NOARCHIVELOG mode, we lost a datafile in one of our tablespaces (accidently removed).
    We don't have RMAN backups or archivelogs since the DB creation.
    What is the most we could do ?

    Thank you Hemant, Najat
    Yes. After mentioning that the DB is in NOARCHIVELOG mode, I didn't have to mention "We don't have RMAN backups or archivelogs since the DB creation" .Sorry to confuse you.
    This was the only datafile in that tablespace. So, i guess I have to add another one before dropping the lost datafile (from control file)
