RMAN compression in Oracle 10g R2 Standard

Hi,
We're currently using Oracle 10g R2 Standard Edition on our production databases. I'm revising our backup strategy and I am very interested in RMAN compressed backupsets.
However, can you use the standard compression feature of RMAN in Standard Edition? Or do you need to upgrade to Enterprise Edition? I couldn't find this information in the Oracle documentation.
Please shed some light on this issue. Many thanks in advance.

Hi,
I don't think compressing the backupsets is forbidden with a SE license : it is not listed as an unavailable feature. Check note 465465.1 and contact your sales representative if you have similar doubts.
Best regards

  • Oracle 10g listener standard

    Hi all,
I am trying to define Oracle 10g listener standard in my organization.
We have 60 Oracle 9i databases in an AIX node. We are planning to upgrade these database to 10g. During upgrade we want to configure the listeners according to our standard.
Now we are not using dynamic registration for Oracle 9i databases. So there are 60 seperate listeners that always try to establish connections to the database even if the database is not up. This leads to server performance problems when the applications overload the server with connection attempts when there are hundreds of processes waiting to connect.
After upgrade, we want to make all databases register with a listener for performance problems. But one listener per node can be too risky, maybe we can register a database with more than one listener.
Also, there are some reasons for shutting the listener down:
    1. Cold backup
    2. Apply patches
If we use only one listener per node, for cold backup we would shut down the listener and then no clients would connect to the databases.
After these explanation, I am wondering if we can mix both reducing the number of the listeners for each node and using load balance for all databases.
Do you hane any ideas, suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Fatma

With Oracle 10g and RMAN there is no longer any reason to be doing cold backups.
I'd run one listener per node. If this is too risky than a single database instance is also too risky and you should be investigating other high-availabilty solutions. RAC isn't always the answer.
Connection manager might also be useful in your environment.
    Cheers,
    Colin

  • Upgrade path for Oracle XE to Oracle 10G rel2 Standard/Enterprise Edition

    Good day,
We are currently have application using Oracle 10G XE. Is there a document guide available to assist migration/upgrades from Oracle 10G XE to Oracle 10G Rel2
Thank you in advance for your guidance

You can use import/export from within the apex application control to move apex applications, or if you are just interested in moving a database (and don't use apex) you can use exp/imp.

Are you trying to connect it through Grid control ? If connecting through a script, then please post its contents.
Make sure you are not connecting to the target database using "nocatalog".
    rman target sys/<pwd_of_target>@<target_db> catalog <catalog_schema>/<catalog_schema_pwd>@<catalog_db>
My Query is can I use

    Regards,
*009*Are these archives backed up ? The above command only updates the RMAN repository if in case the archives were delete manually at OS level.
I would recommend you to backup these archives and then delete them.
RMAN>backup archivelog all not backedup 1 times delete input; If these archives are already backed up and have not been deleted from the disk, then you can use the below command
RMAN>delete force noprompt archivelog all completed before 'SYSDATE-n';where "n" is the number of days behind the current date. Make sure to verify if these archives have been backed up before deleting.

  • Installation of Oracle 10g XE in Windows Vista home premium

    Hi,
I tried to install oracle 10g XE(express edition) in my laptop which has Windows Vista home premium 32 bit.But when i start database it is showing me error
    C:\oracleexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\BIN>net start OracleXETNSListener
    System error 5 has occured
    Access is denied
    C:\oracleexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\BIN>net start OracleServiceXE
    System error 5 has occured
    Access is denied
CAn anyone please help me out with this issue.

I didn't realize Vista Home Premium wasn't supported, so I went ahead and installed Oracle 10g R2 standard edition and then personal edition on 64-bit Vista Home Premium. The only problem I've had is that the DB Console doesn't work, which is why I came to this forum and thread. All I get is a blank page with a few chicken scratches, but everything else has been working so far. I've had to revert to command line SQL Plus, and I just imported a couple million rows from an export done on a Solaris server, so go figure. Obviously I'm not using it for a production database, but for my purposes so far it's done OK.

  • Oracle 10g RMAN is not working in RHEL 4 after fresh installation

I downloaded Oracle 10g R2 from OTN at home for self study.
I have problem with the RMAN after fresh installation Oracle 10g in RedHat Enterprise Linux AS 4. (x86)
Everything seems works fine, database mounted including EM, SQLPlus, iSQLPlus etc.
But when I attempt to execute RMAN command on the terminal, nothing is happening. No RMAN prompt, No error message!
I ran the "relink all" command but no helps.
    Please advice.

I guess you are a common Linux 'victim', you don't invoke Oracle's rman, but a Linux executable:
    http://linux.about.com/cs/linux101/g/rman.htm
Check your PATH variable, you may move $ORACLE_HOME/bin to the top.

  • Oracle 10g on Windows Server 2003 Standard 64bit

We are running Oracle 10g on Windows Server 2003 Standard 64bit Edition. I am NOT a DBA, so forgive my ignorance.
We have 16GB of physical memory in this server. I was told by a DBA that Oracle runs on "a single process", and because of that, he said that Windows Server 2003 Standard will only allow 2GB max for a single process.
    Can anyone confirm this? Thanks.

This sounds more lika a Windows issue. If both Windows and app is "64-bit", I would expect the user virtual address space (per process) to be in the TiB range, if not larger.
(The said 2GiB limit applies to a 32-bit system.)

  • What is limit of database size in oracle 10g standard edition/edition one

    Hai All,
What is the limit of database size in oracle 10g standard edition and standard edition one.. I see the white paper of oracle says that the limitation is 500 GB. This limitation is correct.? if correct then what happened after the limit..?
    Please help?

What white paper would that be? I can't see any limit in the Oracle Database 10g Editions comparisons.

  • Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition user license in Standard Edition

    Hi,
If I purchase Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition license (user or processor), and somehow if I decedided to downgrade the server from Enterprise Edition to Standard Edition, is these license still valid to apply to the Standard Edition server??
    Thanks

I'm sure Oracle would have no objection to you using a less expensive version, but you may want to run that question by your Oracle sales rep to see if there is a notification requirement.
Whether there would be an opportunity to get some level of refund, though, would be a question for your Oracle sales rep. I would tend to doubt it but you never know.

  • Upgrading from Oracle 10G standard edition to Oracle 10G enterprise edition

    Hi
I want to upgrade from Oracle 10G standard edition to Oracle 10G enterprise edition. Is there any script provided by oracle which I can run on existing Oracle 10G standard edition to upgrade to enterprise edition after completing the licensing formalities or do I need to install Oracle 10g Enterprise edition from scratch and then migrate my data.
    Ramanbir S

You will not need to perform any data migration to upgrade to EE. The diffetence between standard en enerprise editions are the features offered. When you upgrade you can use the same set of files you used to install standard edition and just add the enterprise edition features you want to use in the 'Custom' section of the Universal Installer.

  • Oracle 10g Enterprise vs Standard Edition performance

For a database hosted on a single machine is there any performance advantage in using Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition over Standard Edition? For our application we do not require data warehousing or OLAP, just the ability to store and query a large amount of XML as CLOBs or using sturctured mapping.
I have looked at online documentation but have not been able to find the answer. Any advice would be appreciated.

Probably not. Unless there is some EE feature you can leverage, there probably won't be a performance difference.

  • Basic monitoring of a standard edition Oracle 10g  Alpha VMS

We are running Oracle 9.2.0.8 on Alpha VMS standard edition and are about to upgrade to Oracle 10g. It appears to me that :
    - database control is not available for Alpha VMS
    - Oracle grid control requires packs to see even the basic stuff that database control gives you, but you can only licence the packs against enterprise edition databases
What are we meant to use for basic monitoring of a standard edition Oracle 10g database on VMS?
    Thanks
    Flora

I have operating system VMS 8.3 with Oracle 10.2.0.4 EE, but I recommend 10.2.0.5, support a few weeks ago send me an email in which broad support for VMS until July 2013 for failing to support Itanium. Support ends in 2017, maybe it's time to migrate to another operating system. I am prounix, but VMS is much more advanced than Unix in some ways.
I do not remember well, but I use 10.2.0.4 or 10.2.0.2 agent, but the operating system causes problems and don't recollet all data.
The license part I don't know, ask a salesperson, but you don't need license all packs, there are many free and good tools like ASHMON (look for it in Google) that cover packs like performance/diagnostics

  • Oracle 10g Standard One

I want to clear out some issue abt Oracle 10g Standard One and Partitioning. On the internet I have found that one of the Oracle Enterprise Edition Features not available in Oracle Standard Edition One is:
Oracle partitioning - For database over 100 gigabytes
Can someone confirm this? Does it actually mean that there is actually PARTITIONING in Oracle10g Standard One if the database is less than 100GB ?
    thanks

I don't believe partitioning is available in the standard edition (or in Standard Edition One). The comment you refer to is likely explaining the sort of databases that might benefit from partitioning-- there aren't a lot of folks that would want to partition database tables if the database was only a few GB in size.
