RMAN performance parameters

Hello,
I have to backup big databases (more than 10 To) with RMAN in Oracle 10gR2 in a Networker environnement. I have to do full , incremental and archivelog backup.
Could you tell me, please, what are the parameters which have an impact on the performance, the speed of the backup?
I am thinking of number of channels, FILESPERSET ...
Could you tell me the relevance of each parameter of performance of RMAN with an example, for the backup and also for a restoration?
Thank you very much

Simple example using catalog stored on test1 database
BACKUP
rman <<EOF
connect target rman/rman_oracledba@test2
connect catalog rman/rman_oracledba@test1
run { allocate channel d1 type disk;
backup full tag backup_1 filesperset 2
format '/data/oracle9/BACKUP/rman_BACKUP_%d_%t.%p.%s.%c.%n.%u.bus'
database;
EOF
RESTORE
export ORACLE_SID=TEST2
sqlplus /nolog <<EOF
connect / as sysdba
shutdown immediate
startup mount
exit
EOF
rman <<EOF
connect target rman/rman_oracledba@test2
connect catalog rman/rman_oracledba@test1
run { allocate channel d1 type disk;
restore database;
recover database;
alter database open resetlogs;
EOFSs

  • Showing RMAN configuration parameters 8.1.7

    Hi group
    What is the RMAN command in 8.1.7 to show RMAN configuration parameters, I know (SHOW ALL;) command is used in 9i version but it doesn't work on 8.1.7.
    Thanks you very much

    If I remember correctly, you could NOT configure and preserve parameters in 8.1.7 (so CONFIGURE and SHOW are not present in 8.1.7 RMAN).
    You could create scripts with all the required commands and save them to the OS or to the Catalog -- preferably at the OS level so that they can be viewed and edited if the Catalog becomes unavailable.

  • RMAN configuration parameters for Oracle8i

    HELP - i'm migrating a production database from one server to another and need the current RMAN configuation parameters on the original database in order to migrate these same parameters to the target database. Could anyone ghelp me figuring out the RMAN configuation parameters including the defaults on the source orcale8i database?
    Thanks

    In ORACLE 8i, there are NO stored RMAN parameters (I believe, 9i was the first version to add this feature).
    Instead, in ORACLE 8i you had to specify all channel parameters, formats etc in a run block ... So, the good news is, in ORACLE 8i these parameters should be already "hardcoded" in the RMAN scripts ... in other words, nothing to transfer on a database level ...

  • Network Performance Parameters

    Hi All,
    Hi All,
    I need your advise on following point:
    1.     To measure network performance parameters (Availability, Packet Drop, Latency, and Jitter & Throughput) through NMS on Cisco device, what commands need to be configured on Cisco devices?
    2.     Is it through IP SLA commands, does it require SNMP RW commands to be enabled instead of SNMP RO command?
    3.     What activity would be required at NMS to fetch the data from Cisco device so as to generate performance reports from NMS tool? Is it walkthrough? What impact this activity will have in production environment to re-discover the elements in NMS?
    Please revert.

    If you are using ciscoworks, you can use IPM to do this. you only need to configure snmp ro and rw strings on the cisco device.
    IPM does a set and get to get the IP SLA information from the routers.

  • Performance parameters WLS4.03 & Heartbeat Lost

    Hello,
    We are currently having performance problems with WLS 4.03:
    1. Heartbeat Lost
    Sometimes, we get messages as "Heartbeat/PublicKey Resend detected". In previous newsgroup postings, this was said to be due to a combination of JDK1.1.7 + WLS4.03 + NTPerformance Pack enabled. However, after disabling the Performance pack, problems persist. Does anyone have experience with this?
    Now we have the Perf. pack enabled and performance seems to be slightly better than when disabled; even with the above messages.
    2. Parameters.
    As performance tuning on the production server on one side and the simulation of many users on a test machine on the other hand is rather difficult, we do not know whether current parameters are really suitable on our production machine:
    weblogic.system.executeThreadCount=45
    weblogic.jdbc.connectionPool.Pool_name=\
    url=jdbc:weblogic:oracle:DB_name,\
    driver=weblogic.jdbc.oci.Driver,\
    loginDelaySecs=1,\
    initialCapacity=5,\
    maxCapacity=20,\
    capacityIncrement=2,\
    refreshMinutes=10,\
    WLS 4.03 is running on a dual-CPU NT4.0 server and started with:
    java -ms512m -mx512m -noasyncgc -Dweblogic.system.home=e:\weblogic weblogic.Server
    DB Server: Oracle815 database on seperate unix server.
    We are planning an upgrade to WLS5.1 & JDK1.2.2 but this will not be before spring 2001: in the meantime would anyone have any remarks on the above settings of our WLS4.03?
    Thanks & best regards,
    Lieven.

    Update: I mucked about more after making this post; I installed gnome-alsa-mixer and checked the "internal mic" option and "Auto-Mute mode" (both were off), after this my headphone output works again, and does the built-in microphone (!)
    I have no idea how I ended up in this "broken" situation, or even what this option does, or how to use it without gnome-alsa-mixer (I had to install 15 packages to get this, as I normally don't use gnome)... Sound on Linux still seems no better than when I started using it 15 years ago :-( (I spent about 5 hours on this...)

  • RMAN NB_ORA parameters

    Hello,
    I'm about to restore a database, but I'm not sure what channel parameters should I be using such as NB_ORA_CLIENT, NB_ORA_CLASS etc.,
    Any idea which view containts these details? I'm using controlfile as backup catalog not RMAN catalog.
    Thanks,
    kam

    If you store your backup scripts in the rman repository, then they should contain the parameters. You can use the RMAN commands "list script names" and "print script" to check. E.g I have the following for Netvault backup.
    RMAN> list script names;
    List of Stored Scripts in Recovery Catalog
    Scripts of Target Database MYDB
    Script Name
    Description
    backup_mydb_daily
    RMAN> print script backup_mydb_daily;
    printing stored script: backup_mydb_daily
    {allocate channel sbt1 device type 'SBT_TAPE' format 'BACKUP-1:AIX_FC:AIX_Daily_MYDB:%d_%s_%t';
    send 'NV_JOB_TITLE=Backup MYDB Full';
    backup database include current controlfile MAXSETSIZE=350G;
    }

  • Bluetooth performance parameters in OS X

    have bluetooth connectivity to blackberry 8830 and 8330. Performance is poor. when i connect the blackberry 8830 via usb and vz access manager i get up to 2Mbs down link speed. When i connect same blackberry via bluetooth i get 100K downlink.
    does anyone know of a way to increase performance of the link by changing parameters on the command line in OS X or by chance on the blackberry.

    You can't expect Bluetooth to work as fast as USB - it's not designed to be...
    *USB 1.1:* 12 Mbits/second
    *USB 2.0:* 480 Mbits/second
    *Bluetooth 1.2:* 1 Mbit/second
    *Bluetooth 2.0:* 3 Mbits/second
    So, even the latest *Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR* standard is still a quarter of the speed of the old *USB 1.1*
    And *USB 2.0* is up to 160 times faster than *Bluetooth 2.0*
    Things never run at the fastest possible speed, so you're unlikely even to get near to the 'advertised' speeds listed above with these technologies.
    The speeds you're getting are quite normal for Bluetooth.

  • Performance parameters - page load - adf pages

    I am developing a webcenter portal application. most of it's pages are displaying adf tables which data coming from web services.
    business has not given any numbers for performance of system and i need to put numbers in requirement catalog so requirements can be measured later.
    we are into development phase now, services are not yet ready.
    I was thinking how can I come up with these numbers like -
    a 'simple' page should load in 2 sec?
    a 'medium' page should load in 4 sec?
    a 'complex' page should load in 6 sec?
    How this is determined?
    help appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hi,
    You can use a utility called HTTP watch http://www.httpwatch.com/ to measure the page performance. You can also see which files are cached and which are not etc etc.
    Based on that you can tweak your pages to meet the baselines.
    Hope it help,

  • Tuning RMAN Performance

    we have R 12.1.1 with database 11.1.0.7 and redhat 5.3 ( every thing 64 bit).
    i have configured RMAN full hot backup daily on my production system.
    this is backup on disk. Application is quite slow (died) and users are not able to do data entry at that time.
    backup is scheduled at 3 a.m ( midnight) and i think its data entry only at five terminals at that time.
    please suggest me what i can do to over come this issue.

    Highly speculative, but something you might investigate: If you have a lot of dirty blocks built up over the course of the day, and a large SGA, you may have a checkpointing issue set off by the backup. If you have a very large controlfile, you may have an issue of the controlfile being locked for rman to snap it. See what waits you have.
    But also possible is you have a configuration issue, like not using asynch or some memory wasting thing like improper hugepages.
    Don't guess, get a statspack or awr.

  • Performance parameters of the meter reading result entry

    Hi Guys,
    Can any one explain me about the below parameter in the meter reading result entry.
    1."No Entry of Tech. MRs at Installation Outside Installation"
    If we enable this option,it should not allow to enter the meter readings in the technical installation.
    But it is accepting. How? can any one explain.
    2.Turbo booster also.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Oven
    Edited by: Richard oven on Feb 18, 2009 11:41 AM

    Hi Oven,
    I hope the following information is useful:
    No Entry of Tech. MRs at Installation Outside Installation ->
    As a rule, technical meter readings at installation are entered using the appropriate transactions (Full Installation, Technical Installation).
    In addition, it is possible to enter meter readings for technical installation before the installation occurs. This is done by uploading meter readings using IDoc ISU_MR_UPLOAD or BAPI. In exceptional cases you can also enter meter readings manually using single entry. The meter reading is then included once technical installation has been executed.
    If you select this field, it is not possible to import meter readings at installation via upload or single entry.
    Turbo Boosting->
    Activates Accelerated Processing
    Transactions and background jobs of the meter reading result
    entry create a high database load. Excessive accesses to the
    database tables EABL, EABLG, V_EGER_H, ETDZ, EASTS and others
    affect the system performance this improves performance......
    Kind Regards
    Olivia

  • Trying boost the performance of RMAN on AIX5L

    Hi all,
    I need to find the best "number" for my test environment:
    I'm looking for opinions based on knowledge of who has experience with RMAN.
    I'm trying find better numbers of channels, maxopenfiles and additional parameters.
    I accept the recommendation of changing the parameters of Operating System or Database
    Environment Info:
    DB:  10.2.0.5
    ASM: 10.2.0.5
    OS:  AIX 5L
    CPUs: 16
    DISKGROUP: 1 (with 16 ASMDISK)
    Adapter: 4 HBA (4GBIT)I want to find out what the maximum rate that can be achieved, then this test I will use only "BACKUP VALIDATE" When I get the best number i'll go to TSM the backup will be done via LAN-FREE.
    Below the results of the tests using BACKUP VALIDATE:
    =====================================================
    1° Test
    Database Parameter
      backup_tape_io_slaves=TRUE
      dbwr_io_slaves=0
      db_writer_processes=6
      tape_asynch_io= TRUE
      disk_asynch_io= TRUE
    RMAN Parameter
      4 Channel
      4 MAXOPENFILES for each Channel
    TIME: 01:08:13
    SIZE IN:892.11GB
    RATE: 223MB/s
    =====================================================
    =====================================================
    2° Test
    Database Parameter
       backup_tape_io_slaves=TRUE
       dbwr_io_slaves=0
       db_writer_processes=6
       tape_asynch_io= TRUE
       disk_asynch_io= TRUE
    RMAN Parameter
       4 Channel
       3 MAXOPENFILES for each Channel
    TIME: 00:57:42
    SIZE IN:892.11GB
    RATE: 264MB/s
    =====================================================
    =====================================================
    3° Test - Here my best number
    Database Parameter
      backup_tape_io_slaves=TRUE
      dbwr_io_slaves=0
      db_writer_processes=6
      tape_asynch_io= TRUE
      disk_asynch_io= TRUE
    RMAN Parameter
      4 Channel
      2 MAXOPENFILES for each Channel
    TIME: 00:53:01
    SIZE IN:892.11GB
    RATE: 287MB/s
    =====================================================I ran other test with 2 Channels and 3 MAXOPENFILES and perfomance was like 3° Test - about 54 minutes
    I could not understand why using the maximum of 2 MAXOPENFILES and 4 Channels = 8 MAXOPENFILES is more performatic than if I increase the number parallelism of the datafiles reads.
    My 1° test i can get 784 GB/hour
    My 3° test i can get 1009 GB/hour
    It's a big difference, because this test database (~ 900GB) is small compared with the production.
    What makes sense for this to be optimal number (8 MAXOPENFILES)?
    Thanks,
    Levi Pereira

    Hi Dude,
    Thanks for the input.
    Dude wrote:
    I think the difference could be memory and process related combined with hardware limitations. RMAN will read the datafiles from disk into memory. Doesn't parallelism introduce additional channels and each channel writes to a separate backupset? From what I understand, too many I/O channels can reduce overall performance and cause additional overhead in particular if the media or disk is the bottleneck. On the other hand, If the cpu was the bottleneck, more cpu or processes can boost performance. When processes run on different cpu's, caching is less effective. The same applies to your HBA adapter. I monitored the whole process of backup and saw that the issue was always associated with performance of I/O the RMAN not was waiting for the CPU and also had no waits on disks. I knew I could increase my throughput but I do not know how. (i.e Resources was left over but did not know how exploring them.)
    >
    As a rule, the number of channels used in carrying out an individual RMAN command should match the number of physical devices accessed in carrying out that command. Striped disk configurations involve hardware multiplexing, so that the level of RMAN multiplexing does not need to be as high and a smaller MAXOPENFILES setting can results in faster performance.
    I can use up to 4 Drives (4 Channels) that are LTO-5 that may have an acceptable rate of 120MB/s, so I can go up to 480Mb/s I know it's not exact, there are several extra factors.
    I wish be sure which was the highest rate I could get by using four channels.
    It remains unknown (x =?) this math.
    16 (asmdisk) + 2 (HBA) + 256 (Datafiles) its ok to use 4 Channel + 2 MAXOPENFILES + 12 DB_WRITE
    If I knew the math to find the ideal number of channels and maxopenfiles would be my great discovery.
    I guess you already checked the Tuning Backup and Recovery chapter of the Database Backup and Recovery Advanced User's Guide, which also shows that you can use the V$BACKUP_SYNC_IO and V$BACKUP_ASYNC_IO views to determine the source of backup or restore bottlenecks and to see detailed progress of backup jobs. http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/rcmtunin.htm#i1006195
    I add more notes than I used:

    http://levipereira.wordpress.com/2010/11/20/tuning-oracle-rman-jobs/
    I tried one more change:
    On large workloads, the database writer may become a bottleneck. If it does, then increase the value of DB_WRITER_PROCESSES. As a general rule, do not increase the number of database writer processes above one for each pair of CPUs in the system or partition.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b32009/appa_aix.htm#BEHGGBAJ
    I changed DB_WRITE_PROCESSES from 6 to 12.
    My last RATE: 305MB/s.

    NEW 9I RMAN: PERSISTENT CONFIGURATION PARAMETERS - INTRODUCTION
    ===============================================================
    오라클 9i 부터는 RMAN 에서 항상 사용되는 파라미터 세팅을 고정적으로 할 수 있게
    되어 매번 파라미터를 주어야 하는 수고를 하지 않아도 된다.
    Persistent Configuration Parameters 기능은 RMA 에 다음과 같은 변화를 주었다:
    * RMAN 에서 파라미터의 디폴트를 DBA 가 커스터마이징 할 수 있게 되어 사용이 편리해졌다.
    * 한번 커스터마이징한 파라미터는 모든 Job 에 적용이 된다.
    * DBA 는 'BACKUP DATABASE' 명령어 하나만으로 RMAN 에서 데이터베이스 백업을 수행
    할 수 있게 되었다.
    * 오라클 9i 의 CONFIGURE 명령어는 RMAN 의 default setting 을 영구적으로 바꾸어 준다.
    * 파라미터의 값은 컨트롤파일에 저장이 되며 필요한 경우에는 리커버리 카다로그와 맞추어
    주는 과정이 필요하다.
    오라클 9i RMAN 에서는는 'show' 명령어로 현재의 파라미터 세팅을 확인 할 수 있다.
    SHOW show_operand [,show_operand ...];
    show_operand: RETENTION POLICY |
    EXCLUDE |
    BACKUP COPIES |
    CHANNEL |
    DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE |
    DEVICE TYPE |
    SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE |
    ALL
    'show all' 명령어로 현재의 모든 세팅을 확인 한다.
    RMAN> show all;
    using target database controlfile instead of recovery catalog
    RMAN configuration parameters are:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF; # default
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP OFF; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '%F'; # default

    CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/beta/app/oracle/product/9.0.1/dbs/snapc
    f_V901.f'; # default
    이렇게 Persistent Configuration Parameters 를 세팅하기 위해서는 스크립트를 만들어
    수행 하는 것이 좋다:
    run {
    # Use the configure commands to create your backup policy.
    # When complete these will be the new persistent
    # configuration parameters for RMAN in the controlfile
    # of the target datbase.
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 3;
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF;
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO
    '/proj/SME9i/backup/%F';
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 2;
    CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1;
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1;
    CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED;
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/proj/SME9i/backup/snapf_prod9.f';
    이렇게 스크립트를 수행 한 후에 결과를 확인 하기 위해서는:
    RMAN> show all;
    RMAN configuration parameters are:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 3;
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF;
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO
    '/proj/SME9i/backup/%F';
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 2;
    CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1;
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1;
    CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED;
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/proj/SME9i/backup/snapf_prod9.f';
    결과는 위와 같다.
