RMI and a firewall

I'm having a strange problem getting RMI HTTP Tunnelling to work with a firewall installed. I configured my code to use HTTP Tunnelling a few months ago, and had no major issues. Now that we have begun testing in the production environment with the real firewall, I am getting several errors.
My network admin has given me an external IP address to use to get to my machine. The firewall forwards all requests to the machine with an internal address (172.16....) on the other side of the firewall. I can successfully locate the registry, and am returned a reference to my object. However, deep with the bowels of the tunnelling code I noticed that all subsequent calls to the new object use the 172 address, so I can't reach the actual object.
After some digging, I determined the reason for this. The program that registers the objects was started with -Djava.rmi.server.hostname=172.16... I made the change to the server's startup parameters, and verified that all calls to the RMI server use the external address. Now, I am getting the following error:
java.rmi.NoSuchObjectException: no such object in table
I refuse to believe that I am the first to set up RMI like this, but I haven't been able to find anything about how to do this correctly. Any ideas on the correct configuration for a system like this?

Sorry, that's not correct. I have done some more testing, and it looks like the lookup works, but when I actually try to use it, the call fails.
I was able to open up the port that RMI uses, and I get the same problem. Perhaps the issue is with the port that the object uses: 58494. I'll check with our network guy.

  • RMI through a firewall

    Has anybody been able to do this. I have an RMI server that will attach on a non-firewalled machine but won't on the machine I really need it on. Can anyone tell me what needs to be done admistratively or programmactically?
    Steve

    I looked into RMI over a firewall once.
    The port 80 solution, called Http Tunnelling, at the time ( 2 years ago ) required a custom servlet intercepting all the RMI calls, then it forwarded the call on to the actual RMI server..... messy.
    In the end I recommened writing an RMI Custom Socket Factory.
    Not as hard as it looks, and source is available.
    It meant that you could have your own properties file which dictated the ports the RMI used. So you might have something like
    rmi_ports=1900-2000
    You parse the properties file, and only attempt to open ports in that range.
    The firewall will off course have to open that range of ports too.
    I never implemented this, but did research it a few years back.
    Maybe there's a more up-to-date solution.... maybe not.
    But that's my 2 cents ( in Euro not dollars ! )

    Owen

  • RMI (Internet, LAN, Firewall)

    Hello everybody.
    In the last view days I solved a lot of problems with my RMI based System... There was the registry problem, the IE problem (no RMI support), the access permission problem and so on...
    But now everythiung is working properely. I use the Java Plug-In (JRE), so I don't even mind about Microsoft's Java implementation :-)
    The registry is working, the server is working and the applet is working, too.
    The problem I had is that I couldn't connect to my RMI server from the Internet... the applet could only connect from a LAN-host. The server is running on 192.168.0.1 and I could only connect from hosts like 192.168.*.*.
    So I changed the rmiregistry command line:
    "rmiregistry &"
    to
    "rmiregistry -J-Djava.rmi.server.hostname=myhost.net &"
    and the server command line:
    "java -Djava.rmi.server.codebase=http://myhost.net/msg/ -Djava.security.policy=server.policy MessageServer &"
    to
    "java -Djava.rmi.server.codebase=http://myhost.net/msg/ -Djava.security.policy=server.policy -Djava.rmi.server.hostname=myhost.net MessageServer &"
    ("myhost.net" is just a reference for the real domain name)
    Now, I can connect the server from outside (Internet) but if I try to connect from the LAN (192.168.*.*) I get an Exception:
    java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.net.SocketPermission 192.168.0.1:5099 accept,resolve)
    Per haps there is a firewall problem. I connect to the internet unsing the gateway (firewall) 192.168.0.1 (which is also the RMI and webserver) and I opened the port 1099 for RMI (but in the exception above there is always another port, for example 5099, 5100, 5101, 5102, 5103) and it looks as if the applet tries to connect on different ports... first for example 4800, then 4801, 4802 and so on (and I really can't open alle these ports).
    What should I try... I'm new to RMI and I don't have much experience in using RMI and handling ports, hosts, codebases etc. Is there a possibility to allow the access to the registry/server from LAN AND Internet or what can I do. Is there a possibility to tell the client/server to connect to a fix port (for example 5099) so I would open this port on my firewall.
    Please give me some advice... I would be very grateful.
    Thanks a lot.
    Greetings

    If you look back through this forum you will find LOTS of discussion about operating through firewalls. A lot of it is problems with callbacks. Ignore it (unless this is the next problem you have to tackle.)
    The probelm is about as you guessed: The actual communications from client to server program require a socket, and that's a problem unless you can nail down fixed ports and open them in the firewall. (There is supposed to be an automatic workaround built into RMI to use HTTP tunnelling. This may work - I just have no experience using it.)
    One basic technique for solving the problem you posted is to define and set a "socket factory" that will provide fixed addresses for the communications.
    As I said, look back through earlier postings.

  • Can RMI get through firewall?

    my java applet will have to communicate with SAP server using JCO
    so the applet connects to an RMI server then the RMI server connects to SAP server.
    in between applet and RMI server there is a firewall. will RMI get through firewall?

    The answer is "maybe". It depends on
    o How the service is coded. Probably has to be written to communicate using a fixed port number, rather than randomly assigned. (Most firewalls allow access to only specified ports.)
    o Changing the firewall settings.
    o Whether or not your server tries to call back the client, and whether the client is also behind a fireall. If these two details are both true, then you are probably dead in the water.
    There are HTTP tunelling techniques for getting through firewalls. Haven't used them, but if you look back through this forum you'll probbly find some info.

    your client is behind the firewall but the server you're trying to access has an address 10.x.x.x which says that it too is behind a firewall and not on the Internet, or is the server in a DMZ. It sounds more like a networking issue than a java problem at this point. If the server is on some side of a firewall, you may need a some sort of "permit established" config setting added to the firewall. Just a thought.

  • What is the difference between RMI and JAX-RPC?

    Dear All
    First of all my understanding of RMI and JAX-RPC:
    RMI is JAVA only version of RPC. It can't talk to any other language.
    JAX-RPC is a part of JWSDP and if you implement your client and server with JAX-RPC, client written in any language can talk with JAX-RPC implementation.
    What else makes them different and am I right with my understanding?
    Finally, I would like to develop clients which will have a java class, say httpserver.java, which will act like a http server, listens to a http port. Now, Two such client will run in two different PC and I want to call a module from one client to another which should be accessible via my httpserver.java. For that which should be my choice RMI or JAX-RPC? Can I achive it with http get-post method, as I am expecting to read some value of variables from one client to the another.
    Say class A has variable a, aa, aaa and clas B has variable b, bb, bbb. Now I want to read the value of b, bb, bbb from class A. How do I do that when class B is listening to a http port with my httpserver.java class.
    Lastly, say B is listening to a http port and I want to send a file to B from A. How can I do that? Remember, B didnt ask for that. How can A send a file to B when B is listening to a http port with my httpserver.java.

    simply put, RMI allows you to (semi) transparently treat remote objects as if they were local, and your distributed application can be written (more or less) like a "normal" java app. Sockets just give you a "raw" connection to work with, and you get to build up your application from that.
    I hope that helped

  • Please help: RMI and Swing/AWT issue

    Hi guys, I've been having a lot of trouble trying to get a GUI application to work with RMI. I'd appreciate any help. Here's the story:
    I wrote a Java application and its GUI using Netbeans. In a nutshell, the application is about performing searches. I am now at the point where I need exterior programs to use my application's search capabilities, thus needing RMI. Such exterior programs are to call methods currently implemented in my application.
    I implemented RMI, and got the client --> server communication working. However, the GUI just breaks. It starts outputting exceptions, gets delayed, doesn't update properly, some parts of it stop working.... basically hysterical behavior.
    Now take a look at this line within my server class:
    Naming.rebind("SearchProgram", mySearchProgram);
    If I take it out, RMI obviously does not work... but the application and its GUI work flawlessly. If I put it in, the RMI calls work, but the GUI's above symptoms occur again. Among the symptoms are null pointer exceptions which all look similar, are related to "AWT-EventQueue-0", and keep ocurring. Here's just snippet of the errors outputted:

    Thanks!

    Maybe you want to change that worker thread to
    not do RMI but anything else (dummy data) to see if it really is RMI, I doubt it, I think you are updating some structures that have to do with swing GUI and hence you will hang.
    Just check this out.

  • Connection to CRX via RMI and getting WeakReference value..... with an exception!

    Hi there,
    I have the following problem.
    I opened a ticket in Day Care Support system, about CRX users/group membership that got lost while synchronization with our LDAP server.
    Although when the user and the group had been created (and therefore taken from that same LDAP server), the membership was good.... but after some time the membership got lost......
    So what i am trying to do now is a Java program that connects to CRX via RMI.
    And gets the list of all the users from a group (aka membership).
    The idea is to monitor the membership each seconds.
    But when trying to get the property "rep:members" of the group, I have the following exception :

    I searched a little bit and found that "10" is the number for type WeakReference.
    That's normal to me because memberships are stored in the group as a list reference to users linked to that group....
    Anyways, what's not normal to me is that when the type is "10" the API does not let me get the Value (cf. ServerProperty.getValues() method)

    Selection boxes in Barracuda Anti Spam and Virus Firewall do not appear in 7.0. They appeared in previous versions, and in IE.

    FIXED!
    I reverted back to 3.6.23 and all works fine. From everything I can tell; number of problems submitted, breadth of issues, no access to versions 4, 5, 6 (rapid version turnover with no support), and now beta being released for 8, it seems FF is having the user base do all it's alpha/beta testing without consent. Being in product marketing myself, I probably would have lost a significant percentage of my customer base by now. When FF begins to support a new mainstream release, then I'll be interested again.

  • RMI and Swing Events

    Hi,
    I have a problem, integrating an application with RMI and a Client side with swing.
    I have un RMI object that does something, and in any time I want to inform to the client side rmi... I did something like:
    // This is the REmote implementation
    public MyRemoteImpl extends Activatable implements MyRemote{
      EventListenerList listeners;
    // code for activation, etc.......
      public void addListener(MyListener l){
        // add the listener in the list...
      public void fireEvent(String msgEvent){
        // in each listener that is MyListener, .doEvent(String msg)
      // Methods that calls fireEvent...
    // Mylistener interface..
    public MyListener implements EventListener{
      public void doEvent(String msg);
    // The swing client side.
    public MyClient extends JPanel implements MyListener{
      MyRemote rem=null;
      // In the start of ui.. Ido:
      rem.addListener(this);
      public void doEvent(String msg){
        // Puts the message at one component....
    }The problem is that when the doEvent of the Swing side is called, it is executing in the rmid... And the UI is not updated...
    What I do wrong??
    Thanks and Best Regards.

    I wrote an application that does something similar, it receives some event and modifies a JTree accordingly. You should try using the java.awt.EventQueue.invokeLater(Runnable) method. Something like this:
    public void doEvent(String msg) {
        // Determine what changes need to be made
        java.awt.EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
            public void run() {
                // Only the GUI component modification calls need to go here
    }

  • I can not sign into FaceTime and my firewall is turned off, help. I'm a Clear internet user, if that matters or helps.

    I'm having trouble signing into facetime. Keeps saying to check my network, but the internet is fine and my firewall is turned off. I'm a Clear internet user and I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.

    there has been a big problem with facetime and imessage. The best solution for this case is to restore your device http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
    Make sure you back it up. and I would set up facetime before you reinstall your backup and  make sure its working.

  • Audit Vault and DB Firewall Design

    I have and application (JAVA Based) connected to the database 11g using JDBC,
    I am going to implement Audit Vault and DB firewall R12 for three reasons:
    1. monitoring the traffic
    2. blocking un wanted SQL statements.
    3. blocking un wanted IPs/Users
    Our two Physcial servers that will be used for Audit Vault and DB Firewalls contain two NIC each.
    My Questions:
    1.  How to put these two servers in our network to be able to mointor as well block traffic, we don't need to change anything to our exisiting network configuration.
    2.  How to DB Firewall will block unwanted incomming traffic from the JAVA application to our database.
    please any usefull documents, links, ideas, network design
    I tried official Oracle Document, it is useless

    hi,
    1. if you plan to block sql using the firewall you will need 3 NICs in the firewall appliance since apart from the management interface you will need to setup a bridge (with 2 NICs) to physically route the traffic through the firewall, this also requires you to patch the appliance properly inside your datacenter between the protected database and the client or middle tier servers, so you can't do  this w/o changing anything in your nw configuration.
    2. you will need to compile a whitelist based on what your trusted applications are doing normally, this is an iterative process, then the firewall will be able to block sql not in the whitelist (replace it with something like select 1 from dual), since the only physical network path from the java clients to  the secured target db goes via the bridge
    Comment: so if you have a chance: pull one NIC out of the AV server (it only needs 1) and plug it into the firewall appliance.
    greetings,
    Harm ten Napel

  • Oracle Database Vault vs Audit Vault and database firewall

    Hi All,
    I would like to know the main difference between Oracle Database Vault and Oracle Audit Vault and Database firewall.
    I have read all the white papers and documents on them both and find them very similar in work process.
    Only difference I see in the pricing.
    I feel Oracle audit Vault can do all the work of Database Vault with added feature of proactive session monitoring.
    If someone can help me based on their knowledge and experience it would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

    I have read the white papers of both Database Vault and Audit Vault
    According to database Vault sessions can be managed using various roles created as per business requirements.
    Audit vault offers same thing in terms of a firewall which manages and restrictions based on roles created .
    From the white papers:
    DATABAES VAULT:
    Oracle Database Vault restricts access to specific areas in an Oracle database from any user, including users who have administrative access.
    This enables you to apply fine_grained access control to your sensitive data in a variety of ways.
    Oracle Database Vault enables you to create the following components to manage security for your database:
    Realms
    Command Rules
    Factors
    Rule Sets.
    DATABAE AUDIT AND FIREWALL:
    Oracle Audit Vault and database Firewall consolidates database activity monitoring events and audit logs. Policies enforce expected application behaviour, helping preventing SQL injection, application bypass, and other malicious activities from reaching the database while also monitoring and auditing privileged users and other activities inside the database.
    To me these sound very similar of doing same work.
    My apologies as I am unable to paste the whole text here and I cannot type full documents here

  • Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall implementaion

    Dear All,
    we are planning to implement Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall on 2 node 11g RAC/solaris10, please advise me to ahead in details
    Thanks

    Recently purchased Audit Vault and Database Firewall
    My question is with Audit Vault.
    All of the documentation says that i need Oracle Linux 5.8 as part of the installation. We do not have any servers now that support 5.8 currently. When I check the HCL for Oracle Linux 5.8 i see only 4 Oracle servers that support this version
    Sun Server X2-4
    Sun Server X2-8
    Sunfire X2270 M2
    Sunfire X4470
    The only two servers that are currently offer for purchase by Oracle are the X2-4 and X2-8 which are way overkill both in power and price for this application.
    The X2270 M2 would fit nicely, but is no longer offered for sale. In it place is the X3-2 which would fit nicely, but it listed as supporting Oracle Linux 5.8. Oracle Linux 5.9 is supported on the X3-2.
    My question is will Oracle Linux 5.9 or newer install to support Audit Vault? The documentation specifies Linux 5.8. Is this flexible or not?
    Thanks,
