RMS size in J2ME 3.0 SDK emulator

Hi All,
I'm developing an application which uses RMS to store about 1 Mb of data. On a target device (Samsung mobile phone) it works fine, under J2ME 3.0 SDK emulator the RMS size is limited to about 200 Kb so I get RecorStoreFullException. Is it possible to configure the available RMS size? I use NetBeans IDE, there is a button "Open preferences" for J2ME emulator, but it is disabled

Note: This thread was originally posted in the [CLDC and MIDP|http://forums.sun.com/forum.jspa?forumID=76] forum, but moved to this forum for closer topic alignment.

  • Arch64 and Android SDK Emulator issues

Hey guys. I have recently installed the newest version of Eclipse and the Android SDK. I have had to install 32-bit libs so everything runs ok, which I have successfully done. After thinking all was fine and dandy I proceeded to execute my application, in reply my console (from within Eclipse) spat out the following message:
    [2009-09-20 00:29:47 - HelloAndroid]------------------------------
    [2009-09-20 00:29:47 - HelloAndroid]Android Launch!
    [2009-09-20 00:29:47 - HelloAndroid]adb is running normally.
    [2009-09-20 00:29:47 - HelloAndroid]Performing com.example.helloandroid.HelloAndroid activity launch
[2009-09-20 00:29:47 - HelloAndroid]Automatic Target Mode: launching new emulator with compatible AVD 'my_avd'
    [2009-09-20 00:29:47 - HelloAndroid]Launching a new emulator with Virtual Device 'my_avd'
So, as far as I was concerned I was to wait a few minutes (maybe a little longer) for the emulator to work it's magic. 20 minutes later I found myself scratching my head, wondering why the emulator hadn't booted yet. Any ideas?
If I try and run the emulator via command line independently I get the follow message:
    [haze@shirley tools]$ emulator -avd my_avd
    Segmentation fault
    Any ideas?

H4z3, I'm not sure why you are getting seg faults but, I just got everything setup for Android 2.0 development on my 64-bit driven laptop. I did the following:
    1) Downloaded Android v2.0 SDK & setup buy running
    sh %path_to_sdk%/android-sdk-linux/tools/android
Then under "Available Packages", download the SDK Platform and other APIs you want. I downloaded Android 2.0 & 1.6, Google API 5 & 4 and the documentation.
    2) Downloaded Eclipse 3.5 for EE Development from eclipse.org
    3) Installed lib32 libraries:
    sudo pacman -S lib32-libstdc++5 lib32-libx11 lib32-sdl lib32-ncurses lib32-zlib lib32-libext lib32-alsa-lib
    4) Added the ADT to Eclipse following these instructions http://developer.android.com/sdk/eclipse-adt.html
    5) I then followed the Hello World example.
    Issues noticed
    1) Clicking some of the Eclipse & Android SDK/SVD Manager buttons didn't register. I had to use the keyboard shortcuts to fully press the buttons
    2) The emulator does take a while to load. I had issues with it not loading and sucking up my CPU. But I realized that I wasn't allowing the initial run of the emulator to fully finish before I closed it. Give it a good few minutes to run before stopping it.
    I hope this helps,
    Ken

  • Footprint of J2ME applications using an emulator

Is there a way to find out the total footprint of a J2ME application?
Thus it should calculate the actual maximum required amount of memory by a certain application.

I think this keeps growing ig not careful but there is a memory monitor that should give you this information in a table I think. It is in the wireless toolkit 2.0. Your should be able to see which part of your program is taking up the most memory too by analysing the table.
    Hope that helped

  • How to read a RMS file

Is it possible to read a RMS file from my pc written by a Midlet application?
I need to find a way to read the rms file and convert it to any format supported by SQL or MS Access.
    Thnx!

Rms file structure depend on device.
You must change the point of view.
Don't read rms file by read the file structure but by using the RMS class in j2me.
For example If I have a device that store(in rms) a contacts list by j2me application.
Then I would to store this contact list in mysql or access db I must read the contact list by rms api, store the data in j2me structure (array for example) and then transfer it by http, socket, bluetooth etc in a server that store the data in db.
Another solution is like the first post: Read the rms contents (by RMS api) and store it in a text file(you can do it only in a device with JSR-75 File api). Then import txt file in db.
Don't try to read rms file generated by device in emulator or viceversa is impossible.

  • Design Patterns, OO Design, and J2ME performance

Hello- I am a J2ME newbie. I am a design patterny/OO kind of guy using J2SE. I'm trying to create a facade for the business logic on a project I'm working on which will work on both J2ME and J2SE. I have come up with an acceptable design, but I am afraid that the bytecode may end up being way too large for J2ME. For example, I used the command pattern for some functionality, which results in many small Command classes, which is nice for extensibility and functional encapsulation, but creates extra bytecode. Another example is I like to throw specific business exceptions, however, those also require a separate class for each exception. Another example is I like to use TypeSafe enumerations, again, new, unnecessary classes.
I am aware of some workarounds (create a generic business exception, just put info into the message, don't use the command pattern, use bytes for non-typesafe constants), but I find myself resisting due to my hardcore OO/best practices tendencies. I guess J2ME is a whole different programming paradigm. How are you guys dealing with these issues? The most important issues with J2ME programming are small footprint and high performance, right? I guess I could write more procedural-ish code, but I am interested in any compromises that the OO guys here have come up with. Also, what size is an acceptable library/sdk in J2ME?
    thanks,
    Abraham

I'm not an OO guy, but I can definitely say that you'll will have to find some comprmises in your designs (the generic business exeption is a very good example).
Since you are making business apps, you do get some leeway on two issues:
    * As opposed to games, where every cycle counts, for a business app maintainability and scalability are you usually more important than performance, so OO techniques will often be a better choice than a slightly faster implementation.
    * You probably have more control over the devices you will be targetting. The most common limitation for MIDlet size these days is 64KB, so a library that more than 20-30KB probably won't be any good on these phones. But if you know your apps will be run on higher end phones you can make it a lot bigger, since they can often have MIDlets that are up to several MB in size.

  • One or more ports used by the Compute Emulator are currently used by other processes

    Environment:
    VS 2012 Professional
    Azure SDK October 2012
    Windows 8
I lost the last few days of my life struggling with a weird issue in the emulator. I just ran out of options and I would really appreciate if someone could help me figure out what's wrong.
I am trying to debug a service package from Visual Studio 2012. It's really just about any package -- even the ones generated from a Windows Azure Cloud Service VS template. Any. The VS debugger starts, and in parallel there's "Starting the Windows Azure Debugging
Environment" dialog which shows "Deploying service package to the Windows Azure compute emulator..." message.
The progress bar shown in the dialog gets stuck for a long time (possibly even for an hour or longer!) at some 60% and then the following error message is shown:
"One or more ports used by the Compute Emulator are currently used by other processes. To resolve this, please see MSDN documentation at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh472164.aspx"
There doesn't seem to be anything else listening on the ports mentioned on the above MSDN page. I did nevertheless try to re-map devfabric and agent ports by specifying different values in the .config files mentioned on the page, but that did not help.
What I also tried and did not help:
    - reinstalled SDK, IIS Express, Local DB
    - reinstalled VS 2012 (yes, I got that desperate)
    - tried using IIS instead
    - used SysInternals TcpView to check if there are any conflicts
    - rebooted the machine: the deployment works initially (*once*), and the subsequent deployments fail (!)
    - tried to kill all Azure-related processes in memory and restart debugging
    - tried looking into log files under the user directory (dftmp\...); no errors in *any* log
    - tried looking into Event Viewer logs (Azure-related and in general); no errors either
Since the conflict seems to be related to my current network settings, below is my IP
configuration. I am behind a router and I have DHCP activated, but again that should not matter since none of that has changed in the last few years (and the emulator did work until few days ago).

    Hi,
Unfortunately I already tried all kinds of re-installs (the full list is in my original message). The only one remaining is the reinstall of Windows 8 itself, which I would really like to avoid.
What I find really strange is the time it takes for the above error message to appear. It's like one hour or even more (never measured exactly, I left the computer running).
What kind of a timeout is that? I would expect that, if ports are really used by some other application, I get the message in less than a minute (seconds, actually). To me this looks like the emulator itself for some reason believes there's a problem with
some port while in reality there isn't.
I'll eventually contact Microsoft Support, thanks for the suggestion.

  • Flash SDK and MacBook Pro with Retina display major issues

    Hello,
Apple has recently released Macbook Pro's with Retina displays.
I have tested my Flash application on the new laptop, and this is what I observe:
My Flex SDK Flash application looks blurry and strange when I try to check it out from any Macbook Pro with Retina display, while looking sharp and OK from all other machines.
On this screenshot you can sort of see the issue:

  • Are there any ways to package a J2ME app and let people view via computer?

Are there anyways to packaged a J2ME app with the emulator?
So that when people click on a bat file, that emulator will run along with the J2Me app?
I saw this in the jbuilder console
    C:\WTK21\bin\emulator.exe -classpath "C:\MyApp\classes;" -XdeviceefaultColorPhone -Xdescriptor:"C:\MyApp\jad-temp\MyApp.jad"
I belive it can be done?
    Please advise. Thanks

What? An .exe? What is this? Do you know that you are coding in Java? Especially in J2ME? What do you want with a windows executable on your mobile phone?
    Once more:
    1) pack your project and generate the jad/jar files. This contains your code, the app you wrote.
    2) To run this, you need a phone or an emulator. (like you need windows to run an exe). So either you transfer these to a phone and run it from there or use the emulator that comes with the WTK or SunONE or whatever. And for running on an emulator, you can write a .bat for starting. Of course, you can write a .exe but it will do nothing else than calling the emulator with its parameters.
    Thats the Java principle btw:
Bytecode (i.e. jad/jar in mobile environment)
    Java VirtualMachine (i.e. an emulator)
    OS (i.e. Win32)
