RoleEnvironment.GetLocalResource is throwing SEHException (0x80004005)

Hello,
I have a Web Role project that calls
RoleEnvironment.GetLocalResource() and the
code was working for several months, but with the latest publish, I'm getting the exception below:
System.Runtime.InteropServices.SEHException (0x80004005): External component has thrown an exception.
   at RdGetLocalResource(UInt16* , _RD_RESOURCE** )
   at _LOCALRESOURCE.GetLocalResourceW(UInt16* name, _LOCALRESOURCE** ppout)
   at Microsoft.WindowsAzure.ServiceRuntime.Internal.InteropRoleManager.GetLocalResource(String name, InteropLocalResource& ret)
   at Microsoft.WindowsAzure.ServiceRuntime.RoleEnvironment.GetLocalResource(String localResourceName)
NOTE: I get this error on Azure environment, not in the development environment.
Thanks,
Eslam Kamal

Hi Eslam,
About this issue, I suggest you could try to log the error message firstly just like
Sandrino's said. You could check the event log from instance EventLog or E: Driver.
Another solution, you could remot into the role instance and starting the component from the command line like
MingXu's post and this docs(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/microsoft.windowsazure.serviceruntime.roleenvironment.getlocalresource.aspx
The reckless solution is that you could delete your cloud service deployment and re-deploy it.

Will

  • Exception writing XMP to jpg

    I have a specific file that throws an exception trying to save metadata into the file.  I am using SDK v5.1.2.
    System.Runtime.InteropServices.SEHException (0x80004005): External component has thrown an exception. at TXMPFiles<std::basic_string<char,std::char_traits<char>,std::allocator<char> > >.PutXMP(TXMPFiles<std::basic_string<char\,std::char_traits<char>\,std::allocator<char> > >* , TXMPMeta<std::basic_string<char\,std::char_traits<char>\,std::allocator<char> > >* )

    Hi,
    could you please provide more details. This could have multiple reasons. For example the file simply could be write protected.
    Please post the full exception message and the file you tried to update.

  • .svclog file is not creating on cloud when cloud service is deployed into azure website.

    I have created a wcf cloud service which is being deployed on cloud through bitbucket repository.
    I want to create a .svclog file to trace logs on my azure local storage.
    For that, I have refered so many posts and finally configured my solution as below:
    ServiceConfiguration.Cloud.cscfg:
    <Role name="MyServiceWebRole">    <Instances count="1" />    <ConfigurationSettings>      <Setting name="Microsoft.WindowsAzure.Plugins.Diagnostics.ConnectionString"                value="DefaultEndpointsProtocol=https;AccountName=StorageName;AccountKey=MyStorageKey" />    </ConfigurationSettings>    <Certificates>      <Certificate name="Certificate" thumbprint="certificatethumbprint" thumbprintAlgorithm="sha1" />    </Certificates>  </Role>

    I also tried to comment out element in ServiceDefinition.csdef file. but here, I am having build time error (The XML specification is not valid).
    In my case, I am pushing all source code to bitbucket repository and from there it is deployed to the azure "WebSite". Here is more details:
    I need help to know:
    Why my service did not creating .svclog file from local to azure?
    It's also not doing the same even it has been deployed to azure?
    On which location(container) I can get the .svclog file into local storage?
    Please suggest correct way or modification so that I can overcome with this issue. Please replay fast.
    Thanks.

    Hello _Adian,
    Thanks for response.
    I uploaded all my code on bitbucket repository and configured a website on portal using "Integrate source control" (please refer:  http://azure.microsoft.com/en-in/documentation/articles/web-sites-publish-source-control/).
    (NOTE: This is the way my client is following.)
    Here is the structure of my solution:
    1. a wcf service application (.svc)
    2. few class library projects
    3. Azure cloud service (with Project 1 as web role).
    Now whenever I push my updated code to bitbucket, It automatically deployed to azure.
    So, please suggest me how can I create a separate .svclog file into local storage (using above environment).
    I hope this info will helpful to you for answer.

  • What is the source of this Crawl Error `The item could not be indexed successfully because the item failed in the indexing subsystem`

    Once in a while my full-crawl fails and stops working properly. The crawllogs show this error for all items crawled.
    The item could not be indexed successfully because the item failed in the indexing subsystem. ( The item could not be indexed successfully because the item failed in the indexing subsystem.; Caught exception when preparing generation GID[7570]: (Previous generation

    The full crawls starts out ok, after a while (1.5 hours into the process, 50% of all the data) suddenly no more items can be added to the index.
    The index seems to be stuck. The index files on disk are no longer updated (Located in D:\Microsoft
    Office Servers\15.0\Data\Office Server\Applications\Search\Nodes\BAADC4\IndexComponent3\storage\data\SP4d91e6081ac3.3.I.0.0\ms\%default) The Index and Admin component start to report these error in the ULS logs:

    Looks to me the index has troubles updating/merging 'generations'. But the exact working of the indexer is not documented (as far is I know). Let alone how to fix this.
    Other (maybe related) observations
    Just before the errors start the NodeRunnerIndex starts a 'checkpoint': Journal[SP4d91e6081ac3]:
    Starting checkpoint because forceCheckpoint is true.which ends a few moments later with Journal[SP4d91e6081ac3]:

    Also just before the errors start to appear a TimerJob starts: Name=Timer
    Job job-application-server-admin-service. This timerjobs does some strange things to the search topology: Synchronizing
    Search Topology for application 'Search Service Application' with active topology [...] and Activating
    components. Previous topology:   ---  New Topology: TopologyId: [...] followed by Starting
    to execute Index RedistributeData method.
    And right after these two evente the errors start to occur. (each row is a ULS log enrty)

    The Question What is causing this? And how to prevent it? It happend twice in two weeks
    nows. Out of the blue, no config change has been made, all disks have enough space.
    Known Fix This resolves the problem, but doesn's address the root-cause of the problem!
    Stop all crawls.
    Wait a few minutes to let the crawl come to a complete stop.
    Reset the index (clearing all!)
    Start a full-crawl. In the meantime no search is available to the end user (boohoo!)

    Hi,
    I searched for the similar error log, the issue is finally solved by adding more drive space even though they though there is plenty space already.

    From your decription, the issue seems to occur to your full crawl. There is one point in best practise for crawling:
    Run full crawls only when it is necessary, the reasons to do a full crawl are as below:

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with SP2: 'SQLEXPRESS'-instance installation fails while any other instance name installation succeeds.

    We supply our software package that also includes the unattended installation (with /QS and so on) of SQL Server R2 Express (with SP2).
    The setup works good in about 99.9% cases, but one customer complained that after the "successful SQL Sever installation (at least, it looked so!) he could not open the supplied database getting some strange error messages...
    After some months of trial-n-error attempts we are now able to reproduce the problems this custumer had. But we cannot find the reason of the problem.
    So the test computer is a virtual machine with Windows 7 + sp1 32-bit.
    Among the programs/tools installed on this machine there were (in the following order):
    SQL Server 2008 Express - the default SQLEXPRESS instance
    SSMS
    VS 2010 Pro (German)
    SQL Server 2008 Express R2 (with SP 1 or SP2 - ?) - the default SQLEXPRESS instance
    Then some of them were uninstalled in the following order:
    SQL Server 2008 Express
    SSMS
    SQL Server 2008 Express R2
    Now we tried to install (in normal mode with UI) the SQL Server 2008 Express R2 with SP2.
    When we chose the default SQLEXPRESS instance - it failed with the following info:
    Configuration status: Failed: see details below

    When we chose some other instance name then the installation has completed successfully.
    So the questions are:
    What could be the reason of the problem (and only for SQLEXPRESS instance that was earlier installed and then uninstalled)? I will provide the complete Detail.txt file if needed.
    How could we check (if we could) the conditions so some name would be allowed as an instance name for SQL Server installer to success?
    With the best regards,
    Victor
    Victor Nijegorodov

    Thank you Lydia!
    Unfortunately the simple check the registry
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance Names\SQL does /did not work in our case since there is no any instance
    name there,
    However there seem to be some "rudiments" under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and/or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services.
    So I will now try to check the subkeys of these two keys as it was mentioned by Xiao-Min Tan.

  • Unzip contents to a container in blob storage

    Hi,
    I have a worker role which zips a folder and its contents from the local resource and uploads it to blob storage. Is it possible to unzip the contents of the zip file to a different container in same blob storage ?
    Am using ionic.zip to zip the folder.Might be wondering why I am zipping the folder if finally needs to unzip it but what I can tell you is its one of the requirements.
    - Ranjit If you found this post useful, Please "Mark as Answer" or "Vote as Helpful".

    Another option is to zip it into local storage then transfer it back to a new blob container:
    CloudBlobContainer container = blobClient.GetContainerReference("myfiles");
    CloudBlob blob = container.GetBlobReference("2b5f8ea6-3dc2-4b77-abfe-4da832e02556/AppList/isjirleq/mydocs1.doc");
    LocalResource myStorage = RoleEnvironment.GetLocalResource("myLocalStorage");
    string filePath = Path.Combine(myStorage.RootPath, "mydocs1.doc");
    blob.DownloadToFile(filePath);

  • Semantic Logging web api in web role

    Hi Team,
    I have implemented web api with semantic logging to capture logs and hosted in azure.
    I have azure project added the web api project as existing web role project.
    Below are my code snippet.
    In eventsource class:
            [Event(1, Level = EventLevel.Informational, Keywords = Keywords.BRRIHUB, Task = Tasks.Processing, Opcode = Opcodes.Debug, Version=1)]
            public void DebugLogging(string msg)
                if (IsEnabled())
                    this.WriteEvent(1, msg);
    In web api controller:
    using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.SemanticLogging;
    using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.SemanticLogging.Formatters;
            [HttpPost]
            public string DebugLogging(HttpRequestMessage Req)
                string Response = null;
                EventListener DebugLogFileListener = null;
                try
                    DebugLogFileListener = FlatFileLog.CreateListener(localResource.RootPath + "DebugLog" + System.DateTime.UtcNow.ToString("MMddyyyy") +
    ".txt", formatter: new XmlEventTextFormatter(EventTextFormatting.Indented), isAsync: true);
                    DebugLogFileListener.EnableEvents(BRRIHubEventSource.Log, EventLevel.Informational, BRRIHubEventSource.Keywords.BRRIHUB);
                    string msg = Req.Content.ReadAsStringAsync().Result;
                    BRRIHubEventSource.Log.DebugLogging(msg);
                    Response = "Message Successfully written in to Debug log File";
                catch (Exception ex)
                    Response = "Error in writting Debug log File" + ex.Message;
                finally
                    DebugLogFileListener.Dispose();
                return Response;
    In webrole onstart to synchronize the log files written in resource folder to azure container:
                LocalResource localpath = RoleEnvironment.GetLocalResource("LogStorage");
                var logFilePath = localpath.RootPath;
                var logDir = new DirectoryConfiguration
                    Container = "slab-logs",
                    DirectoryQuotaInMB = 100,
                    Path = logFilePath
                var diagnostics = DiagnosticMonitor.GetDefaultInitialConfiguration();
                diagnostics.Directories.ScheduledTransferPeriod = TimeSpan.FromMinutes(1);
                diagnostics.Directories.DataSources.Add(logDir);
                var connStr = CloudConfigurationManager.GetSetting("Microsoft.WindowsAzure.Plugins.Diagnostics.ConnectionString");
                DiagnosticMonitor.StartWithConnectionString(connStr, diagnostics);
    But this code is running fine from my local machine.
    After deploying it to azure this is not running as expected. First time it is creating log files in resource folder. but then later it is keep sending error message like below,
    - The operation has timed out
    - File used by another process
    How can I resolve this? Kindly experts please share your ideas and blogs that available for writing semantic logs file in flat file and then it should move to azure storage blob container.
    Expect azure experts advise.
    Thanks.

    Hi Billgiee,
    Thanks for replying. I have tested by taking RDP of instance deployed.
    Finally I found the issue fix. This was happen due to created file listener in asynchronous mode. After I changed that property to false. Code is working fine. now it is continuously taking the input and writing to log files in semantic logging approach.
    Set property : isAsync: false
    It got fixed!
    Coding snippet:
    DebugLogFileListener = FlatFileLog.CreateListener(localResource.RootPath + "DebugLog" + System.DateTime.UtcNow.ToString("MMddyyyy") + ".txt", formatter: new XmlEventTextFormatter(EventTextFormatting.Indented), isAsync:
    false);
    Thanks

  • SEHException accessing RoleEnvironment on 2.2 project on 2.3 Emulator using Full IIS

    Hello,
    I recently upgraded my development environment to the 2.3 SDK. However I'm still referencing 2.2 assemblies in a project I'm working on. When running the project using IIS-Express everything appears to run fine.  However, we attempting to use full IIS
    I received this exception:
    "A first chance exception of type 'System.Runtime.InteropServices.SEHException' occurred in msshrtmi.dll"
    on the following line of code:
    protected void Application_Start()
    var configValue = RoleEnvironment.GetConfigurationSettingValue("ConfigValue"));
    The RoleEnvironment.IsAvailable is false at this point.  I've made sure that I'm starting the Azure Cloud project and not the web project as I know this is a common occurrence when that happens. The compute emulator and storage emulator appear to start
    fine.
    There is the following exception in the emulator, but some blogs suggest its an error I can ignore:

  • SSRS 2012 Print Error w/ Win 8.1 IE11 (0x80004005)

    I'm having an issue printing SSRS 2012 reports from Win 8.1/IE11.  When I print I get "An error occurred trying to render the report. (0x80004005)"  See below for SSRS Log.  This happens when trying to print any reports from this
    server on a win 8.1 machine. I've checked on Win8/IE10 and Win7/IE11 and they both work fine.  When I change the "User agent string" in F12/Emulation to IE10 instead of default it also works fine.  These reports are in compatibility mode
    by default due to the "Dispaly intranet sites in Compatibility View" being checked by default.  If I uncheck this box the reports will not even run.  They display an error message of "Value cannot be null. Parameter name: String"
    which is very similar looking to the error in the log below.
    TIA for any help
    Tommy

    Hi Joshua.Arenz,
    As per my understanding, you configured SSRS 2012 of SharePoint mode, when you click system setting in Central Admin, you got the error message.
    According to the error message, the Reporting Services service application is not configured correctly. Please make sure you created service application correctly by following steps:
    In SharePoint Central Administration, in the Application Management group, click Manage Service Applications.
    In the SharePoint toolbar, click the New button.
    In the New menu, click SQL Server Reporting Services Service Application.
    In the Create SQL Server Reporting Services Service Application page, enter a name for the application.
    In Application Pool section, create a new application pool for the application (recommended). Then select or create a managed account for the application pool.
    In the Database Server, you can use the current server or choose a different SQL Server.
    In Database Name the default value is ReportingService_<guid>, which is a unique database name. If you type a new value, type a unique value.
    In Database Authentication, the default is Windows Authentication.
    In the Web Application Association section, select the Web Application to be provisioned for access by the current Reporting Services Service Application.
    Click OK.
    For more information about Creating a new Reporting Services Service Application, please refer to the following document:
    http://niftit.com/how-to-install-configure-reporting-services-sharepoint-2013/
    If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

    Yes plugin is written using C++ and that plugin is connecting with MyApp. Previously the plugin was working fine while the connection WCF service was in .net version 3.5 but on change of .net version to v4.5 is throwing the exception. This wcf service developed on C#.

  • Function module JOB_CLOSE throwing exception

    Hello,
    We have a batch job which has 2 steps:
    1) Step 1 uses job_open, job_submit and job_close and immediately schedules batch job A/P_ACCOUNTS which in turn creates batch input sessions A/P_ACCOUNTS.
    2) Step 2 Processes A/P_ACCOUNTS sessions created yesterday or today.
    In few cases, job_close is throwing exception job_close_failed. I believe that error is coming due to non availability of work processes. Job A/P_Accounts is defined as a class C batch job. There is a check in the FM job_close which does the following check:
    - if the class of a batch job is B or C, it calculates the number of free work processes. If there are no work processes available then JOB_CLOSE throws JOB_CLOSE_FAILED exception.
    - If the class is u2018Au2019, it skips this check.
    We have an option of changing the class of batch job to A but there are some system critical jobs that are running as class A.
    My question is:
    In the code, JOB_CLOSE has been called for scheduling the job A/P_ACCOUNTS with parameter start immediately. Can anyone please let me know what will happen if function JOB_CLOSE is not called with start immediately option? Will the batch job A/P_ACCOUNTS wait till the time work processes are available?
    Or, can anything else be done to solve the issue?
    Regards,

    HI,
    This is my experience with job_close..
    when i was working in zprograms then i was able to scedule it any time i wanted..
    but in my standard program when i tried it didn't worked....
    so i have to use that option of starting it immediately..
    and then it is working fine..
    now if i schedule 5 jobs... one after another..
    its get queued up...and once the processor is free...its working..
    my code of job close

  • Access denied error while writing a file to the file system - myfileupload.saveas() throws system.unauthorizedexception

    hi,
    as part of my requirement , i have to perform read and  write  operations of  few files [ using the file upload control in my custom visual web part] and on submit button click.
    but while writing these files - with the help of  fileupload control - and when i use  myfileupload.saveas(mylocation);
    - i am saving these files into my D:\ drive of my server , where i am executing my code -, am getting access denied error.
    it throws system.unauthorizedexception.
    i have given full control on that folder where i was trying to store my attached files. and also  after following asp.net forums,
    i have added  iusr group added and performed all those steps such that, the file is saved in my D:\ drive.
    but unfortunately  that didnt happen.
    also
    a) i am trying the code with runwithelevatedprivileges(delegate() )  code
    b) shared the drive within the  d :drive where i want o save the files.
    c) given the full privieleges for the app pool identity- in my case , its
    network service.
    the  other strange thing is that, the same code works perfectly in  other machine, where the same sp, vs 2012  etc were installed .
    would like to know, any other changes/ steps i need to make it on this  server, where i am getting the  error.
    help is  appreciated!

    Hi Friends,
    I have gone through scores of examples and i am failing to understand the right thing to be done to copy a file from one directory to another. Here is my class...So let's see... C:\GetMe1 is a directory on your machine, right? And this is what you are doing with that directory:
    public static void copyFiles(File src, File dest) throws IOException
    // dest is a 'File' object but represents the C:\GetMe1 directory, right?
    fout = new FileOutputStream (dest);If it's a directory, where in your code are you appending the source file name to the path, before trying to open an output stream on it? You're not.
    BTW, this is awful:
    catch (IOException e)
    IOException wrapper = new IOException("copyFiles: Unable to copy file: " +
    src.getAbsolutePath() + "to" + dest.getAbsolutePath()+".");
    wrapper.initCause(e);
    wrapper.setStackTrace(e.getStackTrace());
    throw wrapper;
    }1) You're hiding the original IOException and replacing it with your own? For what good purpose?
    2) Even if you had a good reason to do that, this would be simpler and better:
    throw new IOException("your custom message goes here", e);
    rather than explicitly invokign initCause and setStackTrace. Yuck!

  • 0x80004005 error when printing SSRS rdlc report

    Hi there
    I have a small app that is published in MS azure with RDLC integrated reports.
    The application runs using IE and the system asks me to install the SQL Server Report Service 2012 add-in.
    I added with no issues but I am getting a 0x80004005 error when I am trying to print a report.
    I have followed the advise on this issue but I still have the same problem.
    I have unregistered and deleted the dlls from windows\downloaded Program files subdirectory, copy the dlls into the same directory registered the dlls to no avail.
    Any advise from anyone?
    Thanks in advance for the help
    Rio

    Hi Rio,
    The issue may be caused by incorrect session state provide for report view and need to use Azure Cache.
    Please make sure report viewer control works efficiently without any session related issue. We will need to configure session state provider using Azure cache.
    Reference:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/hh825825.aspx
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/gg278339.aspx
    We pretty much need first create an Azure Shared Cache namespace, then copy the configure property for our cache namespace to our web.config file.
