_root vs _levelN (_level0)

is there a definitive forum-post or article or whatever,
about:
understanding _root and _level0 and _levelN?
for example: if a given SWF can loadMovie() another SWF into
"level17", then can that 'child' movieclip say "_parent._root"
to refer to something that might have loaded that 'first'
SWF's movieclip -- which thinks it is "_root"?
stuff like that...
okay, then what if you have some wierd superFlash contraption
that deeply loads SWFs so that nothing can be sure
it is really the "main zero top root" timeline of anything??
what kind of code is necessary to climb all over the currently
existing
flash-rigamarole-structure-of-movieclips-loaded-by-other-movieclips,
and know what the whole monster looks like (and facilitate
communication between them)?
[are we still in some kind of time-travelled past version of
some kind of Flash 17.0, a future Flash which isn't so "Flash 4"
about all this?] [[TELL TARGET always makes me think of apples and
arrows and overtures.]]
i'm not a programmer, but it sure seems that nothing but
Flash has _levels and movieclips and timelines...
and so there is no Java or C++ or Scheme paradigm or model
for what is going on in Flash... i feel like i am learning the
mechanics of something very high level, like say, Flex 17,
for which Flash 8 is just a kind of nuts and bolts level...
thus, there is indeed something quite special about being a
Flash Mechanic, something not quite here yet.

There is now...
There are any number of levels in the flash player, that by
default are
layered/stacks so that level 0 is behind level 1, which is
behind level 2
etc.
The first SWF movie you load goes into level 0 automatically.
You can load
other SWF's into other levels.
_levelN refers to the root of the SWF movie loaded into level
N.
_root refers to the root of the SWF for the current level (ie
the level that
owns the object that owns the script that is currently
executing)
Its really not that hard ... have you read the help?
> for example: if a given SWF can loadMovie() another SWF

Its not a child movie clip then .. its a separate movie (not
clip) playing
in another level. It doesn't have a _parent

If you load into a level, it cannot be nested .. levels are a
simple linear
'stack' of movies, there is no nesting there.
You can load a SWF into a movieclip (INSTEAD of into a level)
.. then you
can get nesting.

_parent goes to immediate parent
_root goes to highest level parent or parent or parent for
the movie (the
root timeline)
_levelN goes to the _root for a given level number N

Its very much like levels = hard disks, _root is root (top
level) folder on
the disk, _parent is the '..' link to parent folder
Anyone whoe programs anything more than very trivial will
have similar
structures of parents and children. Its got to be one of the
most basic and
useful paradigms in programming.

Not really .. you jsut have to 'get it'.

  • Encore no longer behaving when building a menu.  Help!

    I have creative suite 5 for iMac.  Premiere works fine but when I want to build a menu in Encore and try to put Text into it, it announces a “General Error“ or "sorry an abnormal condition has been detected” and the screen goes “mad”.  I’d be grateful for any help!

    My guess is that you have a scope problem. By putting the button inside a movieclip you have made the buttons scope the same as that clip.
    So if you add a trace inside the release event handler, what do you get?
    trace("My current scope is: "+this);
    I'm guessing it is "_level0.mc_anim_backdrops_menu," right?
    So since you are using the global function of gotoAndPlay() it is looking for that label in the current timeline and not finding it.
    You should probably use the MovieClip method and specifiy which timeline it should look in.
    _root.gotoAndPlay("Why");
    _level0.gotoAndPlay("Why")
    _parent.gotoAndPlay("Why");
    both would probably work. I would never use the first two, other than to make sure that there wasn't something else going on...

  • Button no longer works when inside a Movie Clip?

    Again I turn to the almighty Adobe forums for help...
    So basically, I've had this problem for over a day now, and I've posted on Experts-Exchange.com... to no avail really.
    So here we go:
    I have a button in a Flash project I've made. It's used to jump to another place on the root timeline, labelled "Why". It used to work perfectly.
    I have now placed the button inside a movie clip (it has to be in an animated sequence), but now it no longer works. It appears to work fine, the rollover state works and all. But when clicked it does nothing.
    The code I use to work the buttons goes on the main timeline, the code for this button is:
    mc_anim_backdrops_menu.btn_subsection1.onRelease = function() {
    gotoAndStop("Why");
    _global.swfloaded = "";
    Why does it no longer work? and what can I do to fix it?
    The question is posted here over at Experts Exchange - http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Photos_Graphics/Web_Graphics/Macromedia_Flash/Act ionScript/Q_24888850.html
    what we've tried there is tracing the problem. The code seems to be pointing to the right place, but none of the actual function works.. as you'll be able to see if you open up the attached file (and change it's extension from .txt to .fla to get it working)
    So would someone be able to open it up, have a look and tell me what's wrong? Because I'm stumped. And frustrated.

  • VoiceMail button no longer works

    I have an iPhone 4 and the voicemail button worked up until August 27 when all of a sudden it no longer dialed my voicemail when i tapped it. Another problem is I don't get notified of new voicemails, This is a major problem when Im expecting work calls, which I discovered a few days ago that I had 10 new voicemails. I can dial voicemail by pushing and holding 1 down.
    Before I go further my carrier is Red Pocket which is an MVNO of AT&T. I did call them and they reset my voicemail several times but to no avail!
    I have spent many hours researching this issue to no avail as well.
    Things Ive tried:
    *Rebooting phone
    *trying a button combination to force the phone to dial my voicemail number:
             *5005*86*xxx-xxx-xxxx#  (both with and without * after 86, x's are my voicemail number, tried with and without 1- Im in the US)
                    When I do this number combination and hit call, the screen either flashes or pops up a message saying "Error performing request, unknown error"
    *Resetting all settings on phone
    *And as I said called Red Pocket whos customer service s*cks....but its whats i got....
    I think from what I can gather this has something to do with Visual voicemail which i dont believe I have as red pocket doesnt have it as an option, AND unlocked iPhones. Im not sure if my phone is unlocked as I bought it used and Im not sure how to check if it is....
    I do see that others have this problem as evidenced by google search results...
    set voicemail number in iPhone 4S
    iphone 5 change/add voicemail number?

    Some other things I've read about were swapping the SIM card out with another and then putting the correct SIM back in. I haven't tried this as i don't have a spare SIM AND people said that this only temporarily worked!
    So does anyone have any ideas?

  • Play a Movie Clip on a frame In Main SWF from a button, within 2 MovieClips

    I’m using AS2, Flash 8
    I have a frame on my main Timeline Called “Gallery” within this frame I have 2 movie clips, which I need to work together:
    One is called:
    Gall_Lge_1
    Which contains 37 frames.
    Each frame has a different movie – basically 37 different photos which pop up on each frame.
    (MC’s named Lge_1, Lge_2, Lge_3 etc)
    The second Movie Clip I have on here is called:
    gall_strip_mc
    Which contains a movie clip called strip1 , (which is set to scroll its contents controlled by buttons on ”Gallery”- which works) inside that is a movie clip called strip_all , and contains one frame with 37 buttons/photo thumbnails, (Buttons named btn1, btn2, btn3 etc which I require to link each individual button to the corresponding photo/frame in Gall_Lge_1  …
    So,
    btn1 will go to and play Lge_1(Frame 1 of Gall_Lge_1)
    btn2 will go to and play Lge_2(Frame 2 of Gall_Lge_1)
    I’m stuck and can’t get it to work..
    Here is the site – under ‘Gallery’ so you can see what I’m trying to achieve
    http://www.blueshelldesign.com.au/draft/
    (I’ve placed in Back and Next buttons next to ‘Gall_Lge_1’ so you can see how its suppose to look when the thumbnails from ‘gall_strip_mc’ are clicked)

    First, you do not use quotes when you are specifying a frame number, so try changing that first.  The only time you use quotes for that argument is for frame label strings.
    If it still won't play, are you sure that the button is coded properly and executes the function when clicked?  You should put a trace in the function to make sure.  Also, you could try using _root instead of _level0... I forget the difference, if any, but _root will definitely get you to the main timeline.
    btn2.onRelease = function() {
         trace("btn2 clicked");
        _root.Gall_Lge_1.gotoAndPlay(2);

  • Change getURL with a variable

    quote:
    I have a movie clip with instance name "launch". I created a
    global variable with:
    _global.launchwebsite = "";
    I have a scrolling menu with thumbnail images. I want each
    thumbnail to dynamically change the URL of the launchwebsite
    variable. I tried putting this code on one of the menu items:
    launchwebsite = "
    http://www.google.com";
    I only get a blank page. If i initially make the global
    variable "launchwebsite" like
    this: _global.launchwebsite = "
    http://www.google.com";
    it works fine. I guess I'm having trouble with the syntax for
    handling the quotes in the getURL("
    http://www.google.com");
    I have getURL(launchwebsite);
    I would really appreciate any help!!!
    Thanks!

    Are you trying to change the global variable with
    launchwebsite = "
    http://www.google.com";? If so,
    you need to have _global.launchwebsite= "
    http://www.google.com" and getURL
    (_global.launchwebsite).
    I could be completely misunderstanding your post, but if you
    do this:
    _global.myVariable = 500;
    myVariable = 20;
    trace(_global.myVariable); // outputs 500
    trace(myVariable); // outputs 20
    You will note you have created two different variables here.
    myVariable is in the _root scope, so you have two variables:
    _global.myVariable and _root.myVariable (or _level0.myVariable).
    Or am I misunderstanding your question?

  • Play animation on main timeline from within a mc

    this is probably the most basic question of the day, but how
    do you get the main timeline to play from within a mc?
    say I have a mc called jolly_mc and within it is an action on
    it's timeline at keyframe 10. That action needs to jump to a
    certain frame on the main timeline and play.
    I've tried
    _level0.gotoAndPlay(492);
    _root.gotoAndPlay(492);
    _level0.gotoAndPlay("animation");
    _root.gotoAndPlay("animation");
    and non of these work, can anyone clear the haze in my day :)
    thanks in advance.

    _root.mainText = "Obtain 0.2 grams of Ascorbic Acid using the
    Spattula.";
    This line is fine. It's fine to have full-stops inside a
    string. It doesn't effect the code.
    this._root.bkg.gotoAndStop(3);
    Your pathing is a little strange in this line. As you can't
    go any further up the hierarchical tree than _root, if you're
    referencing objects via the root, it should be the first object in
    the target. So if you want to refer to your target using an
    absolute reference(ie by using root) then your line should read:
    _root.bkg.gotoAndStop(3);
    alternatively, since your AS is in a movieclip inside bkg,
    you can refer to your target using a relative reference like so:
    this._parent.gotoAndStop(3);
    this._level0.bkg.power.powerOne.gotoAndStop(2);
    similar story here. _level0 is the highest up you can go, so
    putting this before it is a little strange. Fixing this using
    absolute referencing:
    _level0.bkg.power.powerOne.gotoAndStop(2);
    or:
    _root.bkg.power.powerOne.gotoAndStop(2);
    or relative referencing(assuming the movieclip where the AS
    is is not power):
    this._parent.power.powerOne.gotoAndStop(2);
    if it is power then you could have simply written:
    powerOne.gotoAndStop(2);
    yes, the syntax you suggested for trace is correct.
    but anyway, i don't think that any of this advice is helping
    you with your problem. sorry i can't see the solution with the
    information you've provided. maybe upload?
    how'd you go with sourcing a flash book?

  • Need help with error msg 1120: Access of undefined property

    I am not a coder, so I need coding help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    I'm doing a Flash banner that has clickTAG instructions from Google. The code they said to put on the button is:
    ClickTAG parameter code for ActionScript 3:
    import flash.events.MouseEvent;
    import flash.net.URLRequest;
    someButton_or_displayObject_to_receive_mouseClick.addEventListener(
          MouseEvent.CLICK,
          function(event: MouseEvent) : void {
          flash.net.navigateToURL(new URLRequest( root.loaderInfo.parameters.clickTAG), "_blank");
    Replace someButton_or_displayObject_to_receive_mouseClick with the actual name of button that will receive the click.
    Note that it's not necessary to specify the destination URL for the ad anywhere in this code; this is taken care of through the usage of clickTAG. Also, depending on the structure of your Flash ad, it may be necessary to prepend "_root." or "_level0." to "clickTAG" above, resulting in "_root.clickTAG" or "_level0.clickTAG". It is strongly recommended to upload the ad into your account and verify that the ad is behaving normally prior to it going live, allowing time for any necessary changes.
    And this is the code I put in (btnClickTag is the name of my button):
    import flash.events.MouseEvent;
    import flash.net.URLRequest;
    btnClickTag.addEventListener(
          MouseEvent.CLICK,
          function(event: MouseEvent) : void {
          flash.net.navigateToURL(new URLRequest( root.loaderInfo.parameters.clickTAG), "_blank");
    and this is the error I got:
    Scene1, Layer 'actions', Frame 1, 1120: Access of undefined property btnClickTag. btnClickTag.addEventListener(

    First, make sure you have assigned that name to the button via the properties panel, then, be sure to adjust the code so that it is not spread out over several lines... normally it needs to be on one line.  You should not nest the function in the event listener either, so try the following (no need for the import statements)...
    btnClickTag.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, tagClick);
    function tagClick(event:MouseEvent):void {
          navigateToURL(new URLRequest( root.loaderInfo.parameters.clickTAG), "_blank");

  • Loading external swf`s into main page automatically after 300 frames

    hi guys
    i have a main file called DEMAND.fla that has a loader placeholder/positioner thingy in it with the instance name "loader_mc_james"
    when the page opens it uses the code below to load in an external swf named demand_001.swf. to the placeholder location
    loader_mc_james.loadMovie("demand_001.swf");
    now at the moment i have 6 external files, demand_001, demand_002, demand_003 etc and use 6 individual buttons located on the DEMAND.fla page that the viewer clicks on to load each page as required, it all works fine and I happy with it.
    In the future however i would like demand_001.swf to load up and when it gets to frame 300 autmatically load up demand_002.swf and so on.
    MY QUESTION IS: What code would i stick at frame 300 to get that to happen?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Ps, it would also good if all the other exteranl files were loading into memory in the background as soon as the inital page is opened.
    you can see what i have at the moment here
    http://www.omega-completion.com/downhole_demand_activated_technology.html

    What you could do is have the DEMAND file include a fiunction that manages the loading and have your loaded files call that function.  You could either have a variable that you increment to modify the name of the file to load, or just pass the name of the file to load in the function call.  For the latter of the two your DEMAND function to load the files could be something like...
    function loadDemands(swfFile){
         loader_mc_james.loadMovie(swfFile);
    loadDemands("demand_001.swf"); // to start things off
    Then, in frame 300 of the 001 file you can have...
    _root.loadDemands("demand_002.swf");
    If you prefer the first option, then your DEMAND file would do the work of determining who gets loaded next and your loaded files would call the function without the argument.  Something along the lines of...
    var currentSWF = 1;
    function loadDemands(swfFile){
         loader_mc_james.loadMovie("demand_00"+currentSWF+".swf");
         currentSWF += 1;
    loadDemands(); // to start things off
    Then, in frame 300 of the files you can have...
    _root.loadDemands();
    (NOTE: if _root fails, try _level0 )

  • RemoveMovieClip not working

    Hi there,
    I built a website for our company, but because my boss kept
    adding stuff as I was building, the navigation-function became a
    total mess. On top of that, the need has risen to make the site
    multi-lingual, and I would like to get the back-button and
    deep-linking to work properly.
    So, I decided to rewrite the navigation-function using the
    exanimo
    stateManager. The site structure basically has two levels: Six
    main sections (L1), most of which have subsections (L2). All these
    "pages" are library items that get attached to a holder MC (L0). So
    for instance, the first page is built by attaching "home_NL" to L0
    and calling it L1, and then attaching "home_welkom_NL" to L1 and
    calling it L2.
    This all works fine, until I've clicked “Voices”.
    If I click a section after that, the L0 gets faded out, but L1 is
    not removed. And since the function then tries to attach a new
    library item as L1 and will not continue until it is loaded,
    navigation simply hangs.
    Unfortunately “luister_NL”, which is loaded when
    you click “Voices”, is a fairly complex movie clip (by
    my standards, at least). It allows the visitor to listen to samples
    of our voice-talents based on language, style and gender. These can
    also be selected and “ordered” through a form.
    Something in this movie clip is preventing Flash from
    removing it from the stage, but I can’t figure out what.
    I’ve
    uploaded the
    .fla so you can check it out if you want.
    Any suggestions on what could be causing this behaviour would
    be very welcome.
    Thanks in advance!
    Yours,
    Andra

    Now this is weird. I already had that trace in my code, and
    was about to post the results here, when I noticed I was tracing
    the depth at the wrong point in my code. I traced it before the
    swap, which always gave me 0.
    Here's a part of my current code:
    var mTemp:MovieClip = _root.L0.getInstanceAtDepth(0);
    trace("mTemp = "+mTemp);
    trace("mTemp.getDepth() = "+mTemp.getDepth());
    trace("_root.L0.L1 = "+_root.L0.L1);
    trace("_root.L0.L1.getDepth() = "+_root.L0.L1.getDepth());
    _root.L0.L1.swapDepths(0);
    _root.L0.L1.removeMovieClip();
    if (mTemp != undefined) { mTemp.swapDepths(0); }
    trace("_root.L0.L1 = "+_root.L0.L1);
    trace("_root.L0.L1.getDepth() = "+_root.L0.L1.getDepth());
    When I move from, for instance, "People" to "News" i get the
    following output:
    mTemp = _level0.L0.L1
    mTemp.getDepth() = 0
    _root.L0.L1 = _level0.L0.L1
    _root.L0.L1.getDepth() = 0
    _root.L0.L1 = undefined
    _root.L0.L1.getDepth() = undefined
    But when I move from "Voices" to any other section i get this
    output:
    mTemp = _level0.L0.L1
    mTemp.getDepth() = 0
    _root.L0.L1 = _level0.L0.L1
    _root.L0.L1.getDepth() = 0
    _root.L0.L1 = _level0.L0.L1
    _root.L0.L1.getDepth() =
    -32769
    It seems as though trying to remove the luister_NL MC moves
    it to depth -32769.
    Any ideas?
    Yours,
    Andra

  • Spamming has made app reviews pointless and report button no longer works

    The app reviews have become useless to me because of all of the spamming.  And to make matters worse, the report button no longer works so the spamming posts can't be reported.  Who do we contact to report spam?

    My guess is that you have a scope problem. By putting the button inside a movieclip you have made the buttons scope the same as that clip.
    So if you add a trace inside the release event handler, what do you get?
    trace("My current scope is: "+this);
    I'm guessing it is "_level0.mc_anim_backdrops_menu," right?
    So since you are using the global function of gotoAndPlay() it is looking for that label in the current timeline and not finding it.
    You should probably use the MovieClip method and specifiy which timeline it should look in.
    _root.gotoAndPlay("Why");
    _level0.gotoAndPlay("Why")
    _parent.gotoAndPlay("Why");
    both would probably work. I would never use the first two, other than to make sure that there wasn't something else going on...

  • Unable to Remove Movie Clip

    Hello... I am an ActionScript newbie. I followed a tutorial
    from computer arts magazine, to create a portfolio using
    actionscript and xml. I linked the portfolio to several scenes in
    flash, such as contents and contact details. My problem is that
    when I placed a button "back" on the main stage of the portfolio,
    to redirect to the contents page, the list of artworks thats
    populated from xml remains on the next scene, or any other scene i
    link it to. I tried using unload movie clip, but nothing is
    working. Please Help. This is my actionscript:
    I don't if this helps, but I get this message in the output
    panel: Target not found: Target="_root.btn_projectsundefined"
    Base="_level0"

    check the flash help files. there's no better way to debug
    your flash applications than the liberal use of the trace()
    function.
    for example:

  • _root always refers to _level0 in levels

    Hi,
    if I load a movie with AS2 classes into levels like
    loadMovieNum("movie.swf",1),
    _root refers to _level1 inside the class funtions if I
    publish my movie to
    flash 6.
    This is correct.
    BUT if I publish my movie to flash 7, _root ALWAYS refers to
    _level0!!
    Please can anyone tell me if this is a bug or not and if
    there's a
    workaround?
    Thanks.
    Thomas

    I'm interested in what happens in this thread. I don't know
    the answer to your question. Does _lockroot help? I've never used
    it and I think I've seen it cause a few problems as well.
    I've not run into this problem due to: never using _root and
    avoiding _level. In some circles I'm know for my somewhat militant
    stance on these issues. :)
    So, of course, that would be my recommendation! I am
    interested to see what others in the community have to say about
    this. Bring it…

  • How can I reference the parent, without using _parent or _root?

    I cannot use the following in my ActionScript due to conflicts with the host application:
    _level0
    _root
    _parent references
    On a pop-up box I have a close button with an absolute reference:
    closeBtn.onRelease = function  () {
    unloadMovie("_level0.Page_1.holderBox");
    Is there another way to make this work without using _level0 or _parent?
    I've read that it is possible to use a global variable on the main timeline and ref that, but cannot get that to work.

    You may need to try a few different approaches (that's what I would be doing), but you may be able to just target the holder directly using the global variable, and not have to include the Page_1 reference with it....
    //frame 1:
    _global.mcVar = null;
    // later on...
    _level0.Page_1.imgholder.image0_0.boxS.onRelease = function() {
    createEmptyMovieClip("holderBox",getNextHighestDepth());
    holderBox.attachMovie("boxSound", "boxSound_mc", 0);
    _global.mcVar = holderBox;
    If that doesn't work, try moving it to after wherever holderBox gets added into Page_1 and include Page_1 in the assignment like I showed earlier.

  • Use _level0 function in _level1

    Hello.
    I've got a question:
    I have a moveiclip loaded, and Frame 1 contains a function
    that looks like this:
    function returnValue () {
    return _root.main.intRank;
    And with VB, I've loaded another clip on level1.
    When I use _level0.main.intRank; from the level1 clip it
    works fine. But the question is: how do I execute this function
    from the level1 clip?
    I've tried _level0.returnValue() but it returned as
    undefined...
    Any solution?

    what is your problem? Some times it might take more than an
    hour and half for some volunteer to answer your question - nobody
    owes you anything.
    If it is such a big deal, what did you come up with?
    My guess is that when you call the function from _level1 your
    _root is going to be _level1. So the peoperty won't be found. The
    way to check that would be to add the following to you function:
    trace("the scope is "+this);
