Routing ppp togheter with NFS, did I get it all right?

Hi,
I am new to archlinux and network routing so I was just woundering if someone could take a look and se if I made this correct.
Setup:
I have a small server, I want all traffic (except the one going through NFS to another computer on my local network) to go  through my VPN tunnel.
For VPN I followed the guide "Microsoft VPN client setup with pptpclient" at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mi … pptpclient. Works great!
For NFS I followed the guide "NFS" at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NFS.
I have not automated anything yet, wanted to make sure it works at is should first.
Well, this is what it looks like:
When I start up my server.
[root@arch ~]# ip addr
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
inet6 ::1/128 scope host
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UNKNOWN qlen 1000
link/ether 00:0c:6e:4a:e1:fb brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 192.168.1.139/24 brd 192.168.1.255 scope global eth0
inet6 fe80::20c:6eff:fe4a:e1fb/64 scope link
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
[root@arch ~]#
[root@arch ~]# ip route
default via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 metric 202
192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.139 metric 202
[root@arch ~]#
Then I start my VPN tunnel with "/etc/rc.d/ipredator start"
[root@arch ~]# ip addr
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
inet6 ::1/128 scope host
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UNKNOWN qlen 1000
link/ether 00:0c:6e:4a:e1:fb brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 192.168.1.139/24 brd 192.168.1.255 scope global eth0
inet6 fe80::20c:6eff:fe4a:e1fb/64 scope link
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
3: ppp0: <POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST,NOARP,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1496 qdisc pfifo_fast state UNKNOWN qlen 3
link/ppp
inet 93.182.130.114 peer 93.182.130.2/32 scope global ppp0
[root@arch ~]#
[root@arch ~]# ip route
default via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 metric 202
93.182.130.2 via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.139
93.182.130.2 dev ppp0 proto kernel scope link src 93.182.130.114
192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.139 metric 202
[root@arch ~]#
Now I want to route everything through VPN(ppp0) and open for NFS to 192.168.1.135.
[root@arch ~]# ip route add default dev ppp0
[root@arch ~]# ip route add 192.168.1.135 dev eth0
[root@arch ~]# ip route
default dev ppp0 scope link
default via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 metric 202
93.182.130.2 via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.139
93.182.130.2 dev ppp0 proto kernel scope link src 93.182.130.114
192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.139 metric 202
192.168.1.135 dev eth0 scope link
[root@arch ~]#
Now I believe everything except traffic to 192.168.1.136 is going through my VPN.
NFSv4 is also forking great, speed up to 10MiB/s
I feel quite happy with archlinux, tried to do this with outer distros but no luck.
Feedback and comments most welcome.
Best regards,
/Christer

OK, thank you.
Do you have any suggestion on were routing in linux is explained in a easy newbie friendly way?
Great, then it feels like I got it all up and running.
But just the outer day I discovered that the routing changed for some reason, the server has just been running.
The VPN tunnel, rtorrent, screen, tmux and htop that is it.
When I started.
[christer@arch ~]$ ip route
default dev ppp0 scope link
default via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 metric 202
93.182.180.2 via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.139
93.182.181.2 via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.139
93.182.181.2 dev ppp0 proto kernel scope link src 93.182.181.134.134
192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.139 metric 202
[christer@arch ~]$
But then the day after.
[christer@arch ~]$ ip route
default via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 metric 202
93.182.153.2 via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.139
93.182.153.2 dev ppp0 proto kernel scope link src 93.182.153.68
93.182.180.2 via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.139
93.182.181.2 via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.139
192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.139 metric 202
[christer@arch ~]$
I suspect that it can have been due to new ip for the VPN. I did not have 93.182.153.2 when I started.
Any idea what can happen?
Any way to keep "default dev ppp0  scope link"
Thank you,
Regards,
/Christer

  • Sudo -S with Terminal - Did something get messed up?

    Hey everyone,
I just had a quick question...Today I got my 2011 Macbook Pro from repair. Everything was replaced, so everything on my computer, including applications, was lost. I've been reinstalling them, no worries. I let someone with the proper software install Adobe Creative Suite, but I found out he was using a pirated version he had on an external, and I removed it - the company I work for would obviously not support it. However, after doing a bit of searching, I want to make sure nothing on my computer got screwed up, because when I found out it was pirated and I searched for it, there were some security concerns, specifically with the sudo -s command in terminal.
This is what was done (I think, this was in a "install.txt" file):
    Run Osx/disable_activation_osx as root
if you dont know how to do that, open a terminal window
then issue sudo -s, a root shell will open
then simply do "sh disable_activation_osx" w/o the ""
or ./disable_activation_osx( make it executable chmod 755 disable_activation_osx
you do that from the folder where disable_activation_osx is. (just copy it anywhere on your hdd)
      Or do it manually
Add the text below to the bottom of your hosts file. To get to hosts file, type "sudo nano /private/etc/hosts"
    # Adobe Blocker
    127.0.0.1 lmlicenses.wip4.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1 lm.licenses.adobe.com
When I checked the contents of the disable_activation_osx file, I found this:
echo "Do you wish to update your host file ?"
select yn in "Yes" "No"; do
        case $yn in
            Yes ) echo "127.0.0.1     activate.adobe.com" >> /etc/hosts;
              echo "127.0.0.1     practivate.adobe.com" >> /etc/hosts;
                  echo "127.0.0.1     lm.licenses.adobe.com" >> /etc/hosts;
                  echo "127.0.0.1     lmlicenses.wip4.adobe.com" >> /etc/hosts;
                   break;;
            No ) break;;
        esac
    done
Is this something I should be concerned about? And if so, should I just basically start with a completely clean version of OSX? Or is this something that is harmless? I wasn't sure because the script files don't seem to have anything but IP Addresses and URLs. But as I said, some websites were saying sudo -s can mess up your whole computer, and I don't want that!
    Any help is appreciated!

What is there to be concerned about? The shell file is simply doing what you were instructed to do yourself manually.
By itself sudo -s doesn't screw up anything. It's what you enter next. Just be careful to either type or paste the instructions you were given. Or take it all to your IT people and ask them to fix it all for you.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • How did they get Siri so right and yet so very very wrong?

Siri can understand some absolutely amazing things and I am often in awe of the accomplishment. But there are some things that are just mind boggliningly crazy.
I have a friend with an unusual name, "Irfan." I cannot make Siri understand his name. It keeps responding with things like "I cannot understand your Fujin." and some that are even more bizarre than that.
For a short while she seemed to settle on "I Irfan" which couldn't be understood either. But finally it seems to have settled on "your phone." So I thought I would add a phonetic first name to his contact. His name doesn't really sound like "your-phone" but I figured if that is how Siri hears it...
    But that hasn't helped either.
Anybody have any idea how to get Siri to understand unusual names?

I suppose access to the log is yet another thing apple removed from their toyland version 6 airport utility.. if so you will need to install 5.6.. which is a bit tricky but can be done.
Download the real utility.. not available for ML so the lion version.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Open the DMG file to see the pkg file but do not proceed further.
    Download install and run unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Drag the pkg file of airport 5.6 utility over unpkg.. it will unpack it to the desktop in a directory.. AirPortUtility56, drill down, applications, utilities and you will find the actual utility.. drag it to your utilies directory. Now you have a REAL TOOL not a TOY.. Log is under advanced.
Then you will know what is happening instead of living in the darkness.

  • TS4268 After following instructs from apple to set up iPhone as new phone can I re-sync with my iTunes to get all my contacts back

after the new IOS 7 update, my 4s would not activate facetime or imessage. I called apple and walk thru a simple reset. waited 24 hours and still no activation. I followed Apple's online trouble shoot and reset phone and set up as a new phone. Can I now re-sync with my itunes to get back all my lost contacts, notes, music,  etc etc?
    Thank you

usually when you set up as a new phone it will ask you in the options if you would like to restore from last back-up, what i would do is, start again by deleting everything and setting it up as a new iphone again and after that on your iphone it will go through steps of setting it up again such as 'enable my location' and so on. when it comes up on the last option 'back up from last back-up' press the option you would like and then on your computer while having it plugged in go on prefrences on the itunes tab at the top, and click backing up and it will show you your recently backed up files, click okay after pressing the option you would like on your phone,,, this will only work with ios5.

    and those that do not.
This post will deal with what you may need to look at.
First off make sure your device is acting as a DHCP server. (if you are already on the internet you may not have to bother with this.)
Check in the Network Preference Pane, in the "Built in Ethernet" option from the "Show" drop down list.
Make sure the TCP/IP tab is the 'front' one. You should be able to see Configure IPv4 and it most likely reads Using DCHP. Make a note of your IP address. It will start 10.xxx.xxx.xxx or 192.168.xxx.xxx (the 'x' s will stand for any number between 1 and 255).
Your router is most likely to be configurable from your browser. You will need to find the IP address to type into the browser from any Readme or PDF files that came on the install disk or visit the makers website and download a manual.
    DMZ Demilitarised Zone
This is a less secure setting that basically opens all ports and points the incoming data to your computer. (not helpful if you have more than one computer on your LAN)
NAT Sometimes called NAPT and related to Port Forwarding (also Virtual Server or Pin Holes)
These settings are usually found in an Advanced setting.
You will need to set an incoming IP address (Usually 0.0.0.0 for any outside server), a port that data will arrive on, the Inside computers IP address (your computer) and the port it will deal with the data on and the protocol it will use.
iChat uses TCP and UDP so some devices will need the settings done twice, once for each protocol.
See Apple Doc 93208 for more information.
    Note:
    Note 1 should read:
    1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP and UDP; and 5220, 5222, which need to be open for TCP only.
    UPnP Universal Plug n Play.
This is a simple Plug and Play type of setting. iChat can find it's own way through a router if the device has this capability.
    Trigger Ports
Some devices offer a security measure that works by a first or trigger port receiving a data packet and then opening further ports when accepted.
The first port for incoming Video or Audio invites is port 5678. When you click on the invite window the process moves to port 5060 (so these will need to be opened by the trigger port) for negotiating the final group of ports from the group of 20 (16384-16403 These will need to open when the trigger says so as well). Therefore port 5678 triggers ports 5678, 5060, 16384-16403. All on UDP. Port 5190 neeeds to trigger port 5190 for both TCP and UDP

Here you will have to read around but this Apple Doc 58514 might be a good starting place.

First off make sure your device is acting as a DHCP server. (if you are already on the internet you may not have to bother with this.)
Check in the Tiger System Preferences > Network Preference Pane, in the "Built in Ethernet" option from the "Show" drop down list.
In Leopard the Networks are listed on the left with icons. The Airport Option will need you to access the Advance Button for the Next bit.
The range 172.16.xxx.xxx is also a possible value at this point. The Port Forward.com site lists many devices and clicking on one will take you to a list of Applications. This iChat will open an page that will start by telling you the defaults to access the device
Opening or Allowing ports. Several Methods not all devices have all of them.
    DMZ (Demilitarised Zone)
This is a less secure setting that basically opens all ports and points the incoming data to your computer. (not helpful if you have more than one computer on your LAN). It can be considered as an extreme form of Port Forwarding
Port Forwarding (also Virtual Server or Pin Holes)
These settings are usually found in an Advanced setting.
You may need to set an incoming IP address (Usually 0.0.0.0 to any outside server), a port that data will arrive on, the Inside computer's IP address (your computer) and the port it will deal with the data on and the protocol it will use.
See this pic for an example of the description above.
In this example shows that on some Port AND Protocols need to be listed.
iChat uses TCP and UDP so some devices will need the ports listed one by one and some settings done twice, once for each protocol. The example above has a "Both" setting
See Apple Article HT1507 Previously Doc 93208 for more information. This is the Tiger iChat 3 list. The same ports are needed for Leopard except for these changes
    My Note 2:
On the first link Note 1 under tables in that link would be better if it read:
" 1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP -
    except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP as well;
and 5220, 5222, which need to be open for TCP only. "
    Note 2
GoggleTalk needs port 5223 on TCP. Also note the Server name for iChat 3 set ups
    UPnP Universal Plug n Play.
This is a simple Plug and Play type of setting. iChat can find it's own way through a router if the device has this capability.
By Not doing Port Forwarding, Triggering or DMZ and enabling UPnP the application is allowed to control the modem and the ports that are open.
They close after the application has finished with them on a timed basis.
On some devices the number of "hops" (how far away the UPnP can be "seen") can be reduced from a default of 4)
    Trigger Ports
Some devices offer a security measure that works by a first or trigger port receiving a data packet and then opening further ports when accepted.
The first port for incoming Video or Audio invites is port 5678.
    Pre iChat 4
When you click on the invite window the process moves in to port 5060 (so these will need to be opened by the trigger port) for negotiating the final group of ports from the group of 20 (16384-16403 These will need to open when the trigger says so as well). Therefore port 5678 triggers ports 5678, 5060, 16384-16403. All on UDP. Port 5190 neeeds to trigger port 5190 for both TCP and UDP.
See this variation where only the ports listed above are completed.
The other single ports need to be set one by one in addition. (5220,5222, 5223 5297, 5298, 5353)Replace
    iChat 4
The port used in IChat 4 is port 16402 instead of port 5060. The group of 20 ports is reduced to 10 (16393-16402). This is because all the In and Out Audio and Video data is on one port. Other that than the settings are the same.
At this time there is no Info on the ports the Screen Sharing in iChat 4 uses.
    Wireless
Here you will have to read around but this Apple Article TA25949 Previously Doc 58514 might be a good starting place.
Essentially whether you are wireless or Ethernet to your routing device makes very little difference to the way you do things.
Your computer will get two IPs from a DHCP server if you are connected by both methods. (iChat does not like this)
    Multiple devices
Make sure only one is acting as a DHCP server. Make sure wireless devices are bridged properly.

kichat: FAQ 2 - How to get my router to work with iChat? December 2008 version 3
(Note to Hosts. to be removed on acceptance. Please use this to replace http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121775 )
Getting your router started with iChat.
Appropriate for using iChatAV 2 upwards. Edits have been made for iChat 4
    Glossary for this FAQ
Routers: Any configurable device that sits between your computer and the internet link you have. This includes Modems that Route as well as "routers"
Routers seem to fall into two categories
Those that work straight from the box. See Apple Article HT1787
NOTE :This Article has not been updated in content since Jan 04 Only being changed to an Article from the Previous Doc listing
Even then some list that they need tweaks.
    and those that do not.
This post will deal with what you may need to look at.
First off make sure your device is acting as a DHCP server. (if you are already on the internet you may not have to bother with this.)
Check in the Tiger System Preferences > Network Preference Pane, in the "Built in Ethernet" option from the "Show" drop down list.
In Leopard the Networks are listed on the left with icons. The Airport Option will need you to access the Advance Button for the Next bit.
The range 172.16.xxx.xxx is also a possible value at this point. Rarely used, but it is part of the RFC for Address Allocation for Private Internets.
Your router is most likely to be configurable from your browser. You will need to find the IP address to type into the browser from any Readme or PDF files that came on the install disk or visit the makers website and download a manual.
" 1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP -
    except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP as well;
and 5220, 5222, which need to be open for TCP only. "

  • HT1553 I did the back up as instructed... Installed a larger hard drive and followed the restore instructions... Now I get a white screen with a folder icon and blinking question mark. When trying to set startup with new drive I get a bless tool error...

I did the back up as instructed... Installed a larger hard drive and followed the restore instructions... Now I get a white screen with a folder icon and blinking question mark. When trying to set startup with new drive I get a bless tool error... Help!!

If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
Boot  into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as  Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup.

  • How do I get my router to work with my new modem?

Since the mods deleted my other post, so no one could see it and think anything bad about linksys's customer service, I will just have to ask a dumb noob question. I am not an IT professional, I am just a regular, non-technical kind of guy. I tried to follow the little guides that they have here, but they leave out too many steps for someone like me, who never does this kind of thing. Or at least, I have to assume that it does, cause it still does not work after I have tried the guide to my router, several times. I have to say that I am at my wits end with this stuff, since my whole home network is down. My router is a WRT54GS V7. But in an attempt to solve my problem, I updated to the latest firmware. My modem is a Motorola 2210-02. My ISP is AT&T. I have tried to get help from them, they do not care. I had to buy a new modem cause their other siemens speedstream 4100B died. So can anyone tell me, step by step, what to do to make my home network up and running again? Sorry about the rant, and the clear frustration, but I can not get any help from anywhere. So this is my last resort.

As your ISP is an DSL Provider, to configure your Router with the DSL Provider there are certain rules which you need to follow to configure your router to work with the DSL Provider..
Connect the Modem to the Linksys router on the Internet Port and then connect your computer to the Router on the LAN Port 1. Login to the Router setup and below you need to change the "Local IP address", By default its 192.168.1.1 so you need to change it to 192.168.5.1 and click on Save Settings....
Once you are done with the settings, you need to power cycle your network. Unplug the power from the Router and Modem, wait for 30 sec and then plug the power to the Modem first and when all the lights are solid on your modem then plug the power to the Linksys router..
Now check if you are Online from your Wired Computer.

I was told by comcast that we had a computer in the house with a malware virus, they even said that they were going to terminate our service if we did not get it fixed. Now this week we hear that there is a trojan malware virus, how do we get rid of it?

    Hello,
Flashback - Detect and remove the uprising Mac OS X Trojan...
    http://www.mac-and-i.net/2012/04/flashback-detect-and-remove-uprising.html
In order to avoid detection, the installer will first look for the presence of some antivirus tools and other utilities that might be present on a power user's system, which according to F-Secure include the following:
    /Library/Little Snitch
    /Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode
    /Applications/VirusBarrier X6.app
    /Applications/iAntiVirus/iAntiVirus.app
    /Applications/avast!.app
    /Applications/ClamXav.app
    /Applications/HTTPScoop.app
    /Applications/Packet Peeper.app
If these tools are found, then the malware deletes itself in an attempt to prevent detection by those who have the means and capability to do so. Many malware programs use this behavior, as was seen in others such as the Tsunami malware bot.
