RPD Migration

Hi All,
As part of migration
of our code from our DEV instance to SIT, we have followed merging process
(File-->Merge) using Blank.rpd approach. Its resulting some consistency check
errors with missing Logical Dimension Hierarchy, For which we have created
Logical Dimension manually and fixed issue. Is there any better approach that
we can follow as part of migration.
Regarding migration using UDML , If anyone has done migration using UDML utility can you please
send out the documents if possible.
I saw in some blogs
that UDML migration is not supported by Oracle , Can we follow this approach?

Thanks. I just need to migrate my rpd from dev to prod so that we get the latest changes made in dev on prod. What would be the best way to accomplish this? "There are couple ways for rpd migraiton; rpd file copy,merge, patching or udml etc.." Please tell me a bit more about rpd file copy option.

Hello User,
You can do that in two methods:-
Method-1:-
i) FTPing the RPD and Webcatalog of DEV from Devinstancer to your Local Machine
ii) Again FTPing the Same RPD and WebCatalog from your local Machine to the UAT/Prod Server instance
iii) And modifying the NQSConfig and Instance Config accordingly.

Best Practices for migrating .rpd

Hi,
Can someone please share with us the industry best practices for migrating the .rpd file from a source (QA) to a destination (Prod) environment. Our Oracle BI server runs on a unix box and currently what we do to migrate is to save copies of QA and prod .rpds on our local machine and do a Merge. Once merged, we ftp the resulting .rpd to destination (prod) machine. This approach does not seem reliable and we are looking for a better established approach for .rpd migration. Kindly help me where I can find the Documentation..Any help in this regard would be highly appreciated.

I don't think there is an industry best practice as such. What applies for one customer doesn't necessarily apply at another site.

Getting error while upgrading rpd to 11g from 10g

Hello,
I have a rpd using obiee 10g.I want to open the same in obiee 11g,but getting error like need to run one file.
obieerpdmigrateutil.exe.
So i just run with -i,-u and -o option, that now i am getting this error->
The file 'DBFeatures.INI' is required for RPD migration and could not be located. Please ensure that ORACLE_INSTANCE is pointing to a valid instance directory.

Firstly you need to upgrade from 10g to 11g,you need to run a .bat file from the path and follow some steps like collecting the artifact files like NQSconfig.ini,instanceconfig.xml,DBfeatures.ini with RPD and catalog to upgrade to 11g.

If still the problem exists you manually update the DBfeature.ini file going to the specific location in 10g and copy them to 11g path.

Hi Jay,
CAF is a utility that is used in migration of logical part of RPD and catalog objects from source to target environments. There are bunch of OBIEE bloggers already blogged about this a while ago. FYI - If you are working in 11g environment, this tool (CAF) as far as I know is not supported. This tool was introduced by oracle few months before 11g came out which everyone thought would be big on revolutionizing the way migrations are done in OBIEE between environments.

EPMMaster.rpd Fusion Pack migration from OBIEE 10g to 11g

We have successfully installed OBIEE 10g and 11g on Windows 2008 32bit servers. On the 10g Installation, we have applied the Fusion Pack EPMMaster RPD file and it connects successfully to our EPM warehouse. We want to migrate the Fusion pack to 11g which is also setup on the same platform. Per the instructions in the documentation, we have copied the files (RPD file and Webcat folder) to the 11g server. We run the UA.bat file and it proceeds to start copying the files over fom the RPD and WebCatalog to the new system. It completes this process, but then hangs on starting the Oracle BI server - it never gets beyond that.
We will be purchasing the EPMMaster RPD and know it is not available yet for 11g – however we’re trying to get ahead of the curve a bit and manually fix the items in the presentation layer that will not render correctly in 11g

One thing that I noticed – Since the UA tool does not completely finish --
RPD size on 10g – 42,675KB; 11g – 6,375KB
I manually change the webcat in Enterprise Manager to the EPMMaster catalog -this actually caused additional errors on restart.
Has anyone attempted upgrading a delivered RPD to 11g?

This is a known issue that we have worked through with Oracle tech support. The Dimension Deduction.Deduction Sid causes an error that prevents the UA tool from completing the upgrade process. There are a couple of ways around this, but the fastest is to simply delete the Dimension, the two related hierarchies and the fact table that is joined to this dimension. Physical table do not need to be touched however. There are still issues once it’s moved to 11g, but those can be addressed post migration. Thanks much to the Oracle support team for helping us out with this issue!

Migrating OBIEE 11.1.1.7 RPD and CATALOG

Hi Gurus,
We have two environments in our project DEV and TEST where OBIEE 11.1.1.7 is installed.
We are using weblogic Internal Security in DEV and we have 3 users and a role by name App in DEV.
Now after Migration I am having 3 issues:
1) After deploying DEV RPD in TEST and after restarting the services. I got an issue like Admin user Weblogic is not able to login in to Answers as well as Repository in Online. After my R&D I found that I have to delete all the users in RPD and then restart the services which worked and my Admin user (weblogic) is able to login to answers as well as RPD.
Now my question is: Am I doing it in right way for Repository Migration because if it is correct every time If I have to migrate I have to delete all the users in RPD?
2) Before Migrarting the Catalog we have created the same App role in Test Environment. After migrating the Catalog only the Shared Folders using Catalog Manager Archive/Un-Archive the security configured in DEv against the App in Catalog folders is not migrated but security configured against the App role in RPD Subject areas is migrated. Now my question is how to migrate the catalog folder security also.
3) After checking the Dashboards I can see that I lost all the format changes done in DEV. Format changes are like User preferred currency, Comma separator e.t.c. Now please let me know how to migrate this Format changes.

Can we migrate the modifications of one RPD to other RPD?

Hi all,
I have two RPDs. In both RPDs i need to implement HOver property for columns to show column desc when mouse placed over it.
Both RPDs are having many subject areas.
If i did this implementation in one RPD, is there a possibility two migrate only these modifications to the other RPD, as it is time taking process to do the same for both RPDs.
Please suggest me if any..

You mean, description field is filled up with some text ?
did you try simple copy / paste option of BMM, presentation layer.. also UDMLway...
if those 2 rpd's are in sync apart from this change... why don't you replace that rpd with this..

Migrate Rpd Catalog and User ,Groups from OBIEE 11.1.1.3.0 to 11.1.1.5.0

Check the Oracle reference I have provided earlier. Concept goes like this:
Important difference is that upgrading from 10g to 11g is called an "out-of-place upgrade" while upgrading to another 11g is called an "in-place upgrade," because the upgrade operates on existing files. Moving from one 11g release to another 11g release is sometimes referred to as "patching."

OBIEE RPD Incremental Migration

Hi,
How can we migrate increamental changes from Development RPD to Production RPD using an automated process in UNIX Environment ?
ie...Suppose if we updated a table in DEV RPD. There should be a script to update the table alone in PROD RPD .
(If anyone has used the "nqudmlexec" command for migration process in Unix Environment,*let me know the steps involved in it*.)

UDML is entirely unsupported, so using it in a Production environment would be very unadvisable.

Yes it's unsupported and so is the command line utility for the admin tool (so is CAF by the way and that one rightfully so...way too many shortcomings). Also, as you stated in your comment we have no clue which of these techniques and functionalities will still exist in 11g.
Generally the whole deployment cycle is still at a stage where each project needs to figure out its own process by picking out the bits and pieces fitting for them from the different "best practices". Even when Marks post series was written we had some interesting discussions.
Nevertheless a definite "NO DO" for anyone is to just pick up the "nqudml" as a buzz word and expect it to solve every problem and be easily usable.
@Darwin: if you want to build a deployment process involving UDML you need to test it very well in dev/test instances. One approach which leverages the technique and still keeps your production system safe can be to use all the "unsupported" ones only up until the stage before production as rnm said.

RPD Security and Migrations

We have a Subject Area where up to 25 columns in the Presentation Layer have security applied. They are denied to the System-level Everyone group and access is provided to Group1.
The way our migrations to the environments work is the Developer provides the RPD and we do a 3-way merge. The issue is the security does not get merged correctly. So if Group1 exists in the Master RPD when we do a 3-way merge groing from the Developer's RPD to the Master it creates another security group called Group#1.
I thought I could use UDML generation to apply the security but UDML does not generate the system-level EVERYONE group so when applying the UDML (nqudmlexec) to the Master the columns have the EVERYONE group defaulted back to Read access.
I am working with Oracle on their best practice for migrating RPD security but I'd like to see how those on the forum handle the migration of RPD level security. So any permissions applied to Presentation Layer catalogs, tables, columns, Phycial connection pools, etc.
How do you maintain that security going from a DEV to a Test to a Prod environment?

Yeah..... In 11g you have separater password for RPD which is not releated to any user. Unless you share the RPD password with user they can not open it in the offline mode. But still this problem persists if a ProjectA user log in and still he could see the project B details.
You are looking at object level security on the Tables. I guess you can implement for the presentation layer.

Migrate Hyperion Essbase Application into .rpd

Is there any tool to migrate Hyperion Essbase Application into .rpd file. If possible means i will import the .rpd file in BI.

Yes u can import data from Essbase to Bi .. there is built in function to do that in Bi
version :Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 10.1.3.4 or latest
once u have installed and opened ur .rpd file u can see 3 layers Physical, bmm, and presentationlayer
go to file >import>multidimensional
u get popup windows where u need to input u informations
Provider tye: Essbase
Essbase server: localhost(if ur using same pc )
username: admin
password: admin password
then if ur ceredentcails are correct u can login in essbase and u get all application which u ahve in ur essbase server
chose which one u need and then import

Is there is any upgrade process to follow (if so, what they are) to use OBIEE 11.1.1.3 rpd and webcatalog with OBIEE 11.1.1.5 installation.
Is there anything extra needs to be done apart from just about moving them to 11.1.1.5 installed machine and deploy/specify path through Oracle EM Fusion Middleware Control.

As per my Knowledge i know upto this .... "first we need to deploy RPD and WEBCatalog files in to New(OBIEE11g) system and we have to test RPD and WEBCatalog files,Whether these two are working fine or not? Because in OBIEE 10g we have OC4J Server,But in OBIEE 11g Architecture wise it's entirely Different here we have OBIEE WEBLOGIC Server. We have to Deploy RPD in WEBCatlog files in to WEBLogic server. And If any changes have to do in Securities and Variables we need to make changes in that after Migration".
