Running db2 on zfs make disk 100% utilization

Hello,
I am using db2 on solaris 10 with zfs filesystem. Since change from ufs to zfs it show 100% percent utilization of disk that keep db2 data file almost all the time.
Is this normal behavior or it has something wrong about zfs or db2 configuration?
I use T6140 with raid 1+0 to present to ldom host and using zfs, this is result from iostat

Regards,

If your filesystem is populated with more than 80%, then the performance can be drastically decrease. Please try to increase filesystem size to become less that 80%. Several options are available with zfs command to force ZFS filesystem size or to have an minimal size.

  • New Log Files Not 100% Utilization

I just recently deployed my web app with new configurations to require my BDB to have at least 65% disk utilization (up from the default 50%) and 25% minimum file utilization (up from the default 5%). On start of my app, I temporarily coded an env.cleanLog() to force a clean of the logs to bring the DB up to these utilization parameters.
I've deployed the app, and its been chugging away at the clean process now for about 2.5 hours. It is generating a new 100 MB log file approximately every minute as it is attempting to compact the DB. However, at 2.5 hours, I just ran DbSpace and the DB utilization is only up to 51%. Perhaps most surprising are the following two facts:
    1) The newly created log files from the cleaner are nowhere near 100% utilization
    2) Some of the newly created log files have already now been cleaned (deleted) themselves.
There are 0 updates happening to the BDB while this process is running. My understanding was that when the cleaner removed old files and created new files, only good/valid data is written to the new files. However, this doesn't seem to be the case. Can someone enlighten me? I'm happy to read docs if someone can point me in the right direction.
    Thanks.

Sorry, somehow I missed that you weren't doing any updates, even though you said so. I apologize.
However, your cache size is much too small for your data set. Running DbCacheSize with a rough approximation of your data set size gives:
    ~/je.cvs$ java -jar build/lib/je.jar DbCacheSize -records 50000000 -key 30 -data 300
    Inputs: records=50000000 keySize=30 dataSize=300 nodeMax=128 binMax=128 density=80% overhead=10%

Without enough cache to hold the internal nodes -- 3.5GB according to DbCacheSize -- the cleaner will either take a very long time or never be able to clean up to 50% utilization.
Do you really only have that much memory available, or is this just a dev environment issue?

  • Cannot reinstall Tiger : installer stuck (cannot make disk bootable)

    Good afternoon experts,
I am writing to you here as I have a problem with the Tiger installer which suddendly stops when trying to install on a prepartioned disk.
First, some background information : I have a 20' iMac Intel machine which I bought on February 06 (well designed machine, happy with it so far). The thing is, I have had serious crashes and lockups using the UB version of VLC (media player) which led me to hard reboot the machine several times. Despite the journaling on the disk, some of my filesystem was corrupted, seemingly beyond repair (some apps did not even boot, nothing happened when I plugged in an external disk, etc). Scanning for disk errors and permissions problems revealed that a lot of files had been damaged ("extended allocation" error) in both the system and in my applications.
As I did not know what to do (I should have asked first here whether it was possible to reinstall only parts of the OS using, maybe, a package manager), I synced my backups and went for a reinstall.
The thing is, the disk is already partitioned, as I also run Linux on the machine (updated firmware and repartitioned the disk w/ BootCamp; worked well). It contains, in that order : the hidden EFI partition (fat32), the macOSX HFS+ volume (where I want to install), Linux swap partition, HFS+ partition (for use w/ rEFIt, the EFI bootloader), and two Linux ext3 partitions.
The install starts fine (booting from the DVD which came with my machine), the macOSX volume is formatted but the installer just then stops. Looking at the logs, I can see that it is because it cannot make the volume bootable (this is what the error message says). Note that it correctly read the partition table/EFI partition scheme as it gives me the correct partition types I have presented above. Also note that I cannot do an "archive and install" procedure, seemingly because I have insufficient space (6GB free on the volume); the installer does not give me any choice. Finally, I can still boot into Linux holding the 'Alt' key and using the builtin volume chooser to start on the second HFS+ volume.
I am asking for help to you gurus, to know what to do here. I was think maybe something like using the shell to do a manual 'bless' would solve the issue; I would like however to be sure before proceeding. Otherwise, is there a manual installation procedure (as there is for instance on the Debian installer, allowing to skip/redo some install steps)?
    Thanks for your help experts,
    Vincent
PS: I am going to see whether I can collect the logs and post them here.

  • How to back up a ZFS boot disk ?

    Hello all,
I have just installed Solaris 10 update 6 (10/08) on a Sparc machine (an Ultra 45 workstation) using ZFS for the boot disk.
Now I want to port a custom UFS boot disk backup script to ZFS.
Basically, this script copies the boot disk to a secondary disk and makes the secondary disk bootable.
With UFS, I had to play with the vfstab a bit to allow booting off the secondary disk, but this is not necessary with ZFS.
How can I perform such a backup of my ZFS boot disk ?
I tried the following (source disk: c1t0d0, target disk: c1t1d0):
    # zfs list
    NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT
    rpool 110G 118G 94K /rpool
    rpool/ROOT 4.58G 118G 18K legacy
    rpool/ROOT/root 4.58G 25.4G 4.50G /
    rpool/ROOT/root/var 79.2M 4.92G 79.2M /var
    rpool/dump 16.0G 118G 16.0G -
    rpool/export 73.3G 63.7G 73.3G /export
    rpool/homelocal 21.9M 20.0G 21.9M /homelocal
    rpool/swap 16G 134G 16K -
    # zfs snapshot -r rpool@today
    # zpool create -f -R /mnt rbackup c1t1d0
    # zfs send -R rpool@today | zfs receive -F -d rbackup               <- This one fails (see below)
    # installboot /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/zfs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0
The send/receive command fails after transfering the "/" filesystem (4.5 GB) with the following error message:
cannot mount '/mnt': directory is not empty
There may be some kind of unwanted recursion here (trying to back up the backup or something) but I cannot figure it out.
I tried a workaround: creating the mount point outside the snapshot:
    zfs snapshot -r rpool@today
    mkdir /var/tmp/mnt
    zpool create -f -R /var/tmp/mnt rbackup c1t1d0
    zfs send -R rpool@today | zfs receive -F -d rbackup
But it still fails, this time with mounting "/var/tmp/mnt".
So how does one back up the ZFS boot disk to a secondary disk in a live environment ?

OK, this post requires some clarification.
First, thanks to robert.cohen and rogerfujii for giving some elements.
The objective is to make a backup of the boot disk on another disk of the same machine. The backup must be bootable just like the original disk.
The reason for doing this instead of (or, even better, in addition to) mirroring the boot disk is to be able to quickly recover a stable operating system in case anything gets corrupted on the boot disk. Corruption includes hardware failures, but also any software corruption which could be caused by a virus, an attacker or an operator mistake (rm -rf ...).
After doing lots of experiments, I found two potential solutions to this need.
Solution 1 looks like what rogerfujii suggested, albeit with a few practical additions.
It consists in using ZFS mirroring and breaking up the mirror after resilvering:
         - Configure the backup disk as a mirror of the boot disk :
         zpool attach -f rpool <boot disk>s0 <backup disk>s0
         - Copy the boot block to the backup disk:
         installboot -F zfs /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/zfs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/<backup disk>s0
         - Monitor the mirror resilvering:
         zpool status rpool
         - Wait until the "action" field disappears (this can be scripted).
         - Prevent any further resilvering:
         zpool offline rpool <backup disk>s0
Note: this step is mandatory because detaching the disk without offlining it first results in a non bootable backup disk.
         - Detach the backup disk from the mirror:
         zpool detach rpool <backup disk>s0
         POST-OPERATIONS:
After booting on the backup disk, assuming the main boot disk is unreachable:
         - Log in as super-user.
         - Detach the main boot disk from the mirror
         zpool detach rpool <boot disk>s0
This solution has many advantages, including simplicity and using no dirty tricks. However, it has two major drawbacks:
    - When booting on the backup disk, if the main boot disk is online, it will be resilvered with the old data.
    - There is no easy way to access the backup disk data without rebooting.
So if you accidentally lose one file on the boot disk, you cannot easily recover it from the backup.
This is because the pool name is the same on both disks, therefore effectively preventing any pool import.
Here is now solution 2, which I favor.
It is more complex and dependent on the disk layout and ZFS implementation changes, but overall offers more flexibility.
It may need some additions if there are other disks than the boot disk with ZFS pools (I have not tested that case yet).
***** HOW TO BACKUP A ZFS BOOT DISK TO ANOTHER DISK *****
    1. Backup disk partitioning
    - Clean up ZFS information from the backup disk:
The first and last megabyte of the backup disk, which hold ZFS information (plus other stuff) are erased:
    dd if=/dev/zero seek=<backup disk #blocks minus 2048> count=2048 of=/dev/rdsk/<backup disk>s2
    dd if=/dev/zero count=2048 of=/dev/rdsk/<backup disk>s2
    - Label and partition the backup disk in SMI :
    format -e <backup disk>
         label
         0          -> SMI label
         y
(If more questions asked: press Enter 3 times.)
         partition
(Create a single parition, number 0, filling the whole disk)
         label
         0
         y
         quit
         quit
    2. Data copy
    - Create the target ZFS pool:
    zpool create -f -o failmode=continue -R /mnt -m legacy rbackup <backup disk>s0
Note: the chosen pool name is here "rbackup".
    - Create a snapshot of the source pool :
    zfs snapshot -r rpool@today
    - Copy the data :
    zfs send -R rpool@today | zfs receive -F -d rbackup
    - Remove the snapshot, plus its copy on the backup disk :
    zfs destroy -r rbackup@today
    zfs destroy -r rpool@today
    3. Backup pool reconfiguration
    - Edit the following files:
    /mnt/etc/vfstab
    /mnt/etc/power.conf
    /mnt/etc/dumpadm.conf
In these files, replace the source pool name "rpool" with the backup pool name "rbackup".
    - Remove the ZFS mount list:
    rm /mnt/etc/zfs/zpool.cache
    4. Making the backup disk bootable
    - Note the name of the current boot filesystem:
    df -k /
    E.g.:
    # df -k /
Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on
    rpool/ROOT/root 31457280 4726390 26646966 16% /
    - Configure the boot filesystem on the backup pool:
    zpool set bootfs=rbackup/ROOT/root rbackup
Note: "rbackup/ROOT/root" is derived from the main boot filesystem name "rpool/ROOT/root".
    - Copy the ZFS boot block to the backup disk:
    installboot -F zfs /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/zfs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/<backup disk>s0
    5. Cleaning up
    - Detach the target pool:
    zpool export rbackup
I hope this howto will be useful to those like me who need to change all their habits while migrating to ZFS.
    Regards.
    HL

  • Do I need to run fsck manually on Clustered disks?

I am just wondering if fsck is run automatically on Clustered monitored disks, once the resource is brought on line after a crash?
Or if not what steps should be taken to make this happen automatically?

what do you mean by clustered disks? What file system is it running ufs? A fsck checks the file system not the hard disks so it is always good to check it no matter where it resides, however some NAS will have thier own file system checking commands so its important to establish where the disks are and what fs is on them.

i have a mac osx version 10.6.8 no windows installed and i am trying to install a program but keep getting can not run in dos mode  ( the disk says on back works on intel mac with parallels or vm fusion) is this program not compatible with my mac?

You run Windows in Parallels or Fusion. Then in Windows you install the program.

if this really cannot find the file, then how could it run successfully for 100 users?
    Have anyone experienced this problem?
    Thanks for your help.

ummm seems odd to have 100 users making a report.. that can be the limitation of your application..

  • Firefox won't insall into my applications folder. Says can't install because libsmime3.dylib is in use. I am running Mac Os 10.6.7 on a Macbook Pro. I can run firefox okay from the disk image but just won't install into the apps folder.

My system is a Macbook Pro running Mac Os 10.6.7 with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram. The upgrade downloads fine, but when I try to drag the firefox image onto my appication folder, I get a dialogue box that says...Cannot install application because "libsmime3.dylib" is in use. I can run Firefox fine from the disk image.

Nope---didn't work. I've owned Macs for about 12 years so although I am brain dead on some things, I do have a working knowledge on most things. I only say that to say this--I did try holding down the mouse and choosing empty trash. It asks if I want to permanently delete what's in there. I say yes--and then I get the same identical message again-----'The operation can't be completed because the item "Firefox 8.0.1.dmg" is in use I can then click stop, or continue.' So apparently that complains the same way it does if I click it up on the menu :)))
As for item owned by---that's not an issue and isn't coming up. User is not a problem either as I am the only user on this system. There is only ONE file in my trash at the moment at that is this dmg file. Nothing Mac. Nothing owned by anyone other than Firefox. The problem seems to be that the dmg file and the original 4.0 FF file are working in tandem with each other--even though I have already drug the new 8.0 globe into the Apps folder and it updated the FF app with the new stuff. If I could force the dmg file to go away, I would do so, but at every turn the system is telling me it can't be done because it seems to think that dmg file is in use---even though everything is shut down and/or ejected. Hey--I'm getting ready to head out and won't be back till evening. I'll check back in this evening. Thank you again for your help.

My ipad 1 has never been updated and can't run many apps which makes it of not much use, how do I update it ? A simple step by step idiot proof guide would be best ! Can anyone help please ?

You can only update the iPad to iOS 5.1.1and you cannot go any higher. If you never updated that high, you can do so by using iTunes on your computer. You will have to connect the iPad to your computer with the cable and launch iTunes
You can read more here. Make sure that you read the section about using iTunes. The article starts off with using the Settings on the iPad for WiFi updates. That only works with the iPad 2 and higher that is already running iOS 5.

The newly-installed Fedora8 cannot run VCD,CD and DVD disks. Can not open a few kind of documents, such as PTF,WinRar,PPT.
Can Windows' application software work under Linux OS?

The newly-installed Fedora8 cannot run VCD,CD and DVD disks. Is your CD/DVD ROM SATA?
such as PTF,WinRar,PPTFor PPT install openoffice (yum install openoffice.org-impress).
RAR is not commonly used in Unix world but there exists RAR on Linux. You can download it here: http://werewolf.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=291
    http://werewolf.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=328
PTF? Don't you mean PDF? If so then install KPDF or Kghostview (yum install kpdf or yum install kghostview)
Can Windows' application software work under Linux OS? No without emulation. For running Windows application you may be interested in Wine (free of charge) product or (commercial) Crossoveroffice (based on Wine). More at: http://www.winehq.org/

  • Running ext. drive as startup disk

on my WD mybook, which i am running as the startup disk, i notice that i when i turn my computer off, the light on the ext. drive stays on. which means that i don't think it is powering off. The WD website says to properly power it down, just drag it into the trash. But since i'm running it as the startup disk, won't dragging it into the trash shut down my whole system, since the OS is running from this drive? Any ideas on this and/or how to get it to shut down when i power my computer off?

I too have a mybook WD external drive.
Are you using the USB or FW interface?
although I`m not using the drive as my startup disk (that is another FW device on my chain), I can confirm that the disk does "spin down" when its not being used.
This is either after a long gap is disk access or by putting my mini to sleep. I know its "spun down" because I can hear a LONG delay in disk access if I try to access file from that drive. (you can also hear it physically spin down when it happens).
However the "power light" on the front stays illuminated. (It "beats"..... flashing on and off rather than "spins" like it normally does when accessing).
You might find that your drive is spinning down, and simply that the whole enclosure isn't "powersaving". The only way I can get the enclosure to poweroff is by pressing and holding the button on the front.
    hope this helps

  • Windows 8.1 running extremely slow with high disk utilization

My recently purchased Toshiba laptop with Windows 8.1 with 16 GB and I7 processor takes 3 minutes to start new programs. Running programs like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PDF reader, etc stop in their track with every few minutes and show a circling
cursor. Task Manager shows 100% Disk Utilization all the time.
I ran McKAfee as well as Kaspersky to see if this was a virus/Trojan issue. Both came up with nothing.
At this point the laptop (though spanking new) is completely USELESS and I have no hopes of using it !!!!!
I noticed from many forums that I am not the only one facing this issue. The complaint count for this issue is growing in multitudes.
    Please help!

    Try these steps.
    Open task manager
Click on processes tab. You can see all the apps and processes that are consuming memory.
Click on top of column showing the memory. This will arrange them in ascending or descending order of how much memory is consumed.
Find the ones which is consuming maximum memory
Uninstall if you don’t need the program or app. Re-configure or re-install the software or app if it is an important one.
    Hope it helps.
