Running flash inside flex

i have a flex application that uses a SWFLoader to load an
SWF (built from flash). The swf is loaded properly but the SWF does
not load the XMLs and images.
if sun in flash player or browser the sWF loads the xmls and
images properly.
any help appreciated

Is the path to the xml and images still valid once the swf is
loaded inside of Flex? So for example your folder structure is as
follows.
/FlexApplicaiton.swf
/FlashInstance.swf
/MyXMLFile.xml
/images
/images/image1.jpg
So when the flash is loaded within flex the scope to retrieve
the xml and images is still the same. Try adding Alerts within your
flash, they'll bubble up through flex and it'll make it easier to
see if it's really able to get to those assets.

  • Running Flash Player and Flex on HPUX and  AIX

    Hi
Issue: HPUX 11iv2 PARISC and Itanium and AIX 5.1 and 5.2
(PPC) are not listed in the systemj requirements of Flash Player.
And So affects the Flex SDK Applications?
Does this mean these OS are NOT Supported currently and FLEX
applications cannot run ont these OS browsers?
If no, if and when would Flex Applications be able to run on
    HPUX and AIX systems?
This is major concern for choosing the Adoe's Flash
Player-Flex technologies for our big solutions, in Web RIA.
    Thanks in advance, NG

    Hi
Got answer for HPUX but seems like its half-baked, as there
are plugins for Macromedia Flash Player version 6 in Mozill and
Firefox 1.5 browsers on PA and itanium.

  • Problems running Flash Builder 4.6 profiler

    Hello,
I have a problem running Flash Builder profiler. When I click "Profile" it starts my web application, but nothing else happens inside Flash Builder itself - no new data appears in Profiler perspective, Flash Builder itself doesn't show any sign of doing something.
My mm.cfg contains the next line: "PreloadSwf=C:/flash builder workspace/.metadata/.plugins/com.adobe.flash.profiler/11/ProfilerAgent.swf?host=localhost &port=9999"
    Additional details:
    OS: Windows 7
    Flash Builder version: 4.6
Tested web browsers: Firefox, IE 8 - the same problem in both of them
    Flash player versions: ActiveX/Plug-in Version:11.7.700.169
I made sure that ProfilerAgent.swf indeed exists in the location defined in mm.cfg. In addition, I tried to change port 9999 to other ports (both in mm.cfg and in Flash Builder). I also verified that the location of ProfilerAgent.swf appears in trusted locations of Flash Player.
I would be very grateful if someone could help me to solve this problem.
    Thanks,
    Valeria

This sounds like something has gone wrong during installation. CSAR and CSLIBS references should be set up automatically during installation.
There should also be no need to import the Flex SDKs as CS Extension Builder 2.0 ships with them included. It won't do any harm though having the CS Flex SDKs imported.
Can you detail how you installed CS Extension Builder 2.0, please and where you obtained it from?
Here are the installation instructions I would recommend starting from a clean FlashBuilder 4.6 instance:
To install Adobe Creative Suite Extension Builder, download the ZIP file and unzip it into a root location (SDKRoot).
Install Extension Builder in Eclipse with Flash Builder or Flash Builder Standalone:
In Eclipse, choose Help > Install New Software.
In the Install dialog, click Add.
In the Add Site dialog, click Local... to browse to the SDK root folder or enter the URL of the update site.
Name the site CS SDK and click OK to confirm the changes.
Select the new CS SDK site in the "Work with" field.
-- Select all the Adobe Creative Suite Extension Builder components.
-- Click Next to confirm the selection.
In the Install Details review dialog, click Next to confirm that you want to install all the components listed.
Accept the terms of license agreements and click Finish.
    Re-start  Eclipse as recommended.
I obtained it from Adobe and installed it using the Help > Install software option, but without unzipping it. Maybe that was it.
Now I've done a clean installation and it works perfect. I did it with administrator permissions, don't know if it has anything to do with it, but I read it somewhere and did so just in case!
    Thanks a lot!

  • Posing a question for those well versed in flash and flex

I would like to start an off-line communication chat with those of you who are well versed in Flash and Flex.
I've worked with Cold Fusion but I am not up to date on all the technologies available.  This seems like the perfect forum for this question.
I simply want to build an application (web or desktop is unknown) in which a person can learn a foreign language, in this case English.
I need some technical advice as to whether Flash, Flex, or a combination of technologies (Cold Fusion for server side functionality) is the best choice for this application.  I do not understand the technical aspects of Flash or Flex in building applications so I need the advice of you experts.
As with most foreign language textbooks, audio, or foreign language video training, the material is not interesting, not pertinent to daily life, and is great for late night insomnia.  I've never seen any type of foreign language training that is interesting, fun, or uses current events as part of the curriculum.
I would like to illustrate my idea with an example.  I want to use an existing English beginners textbook (for kids), scan the images in the textbook, store the content (rules of grammar) in a database and store example sentences in a database.
I would like to record basic audio sentences from the textbook (Do you know tomorrow's weather), incorporate some animation (baseball player hitting a home run), incorporate some basic video (purchasing an item at the grocery store), add a quiz, test question or puzzles, etc..
In addition, since this is a classroom setting and the kids are split into groups, I would like to store a seating chart with the kids names and pictures in a database.  After the first segment is finished (e.g. purchasing a toy at the store) the kids next perform an activty.  I want to use a combination of audio, video, and animation to explain the activity, give instructions, split the class into groups, and perform the activity.
As I mentioned before, I would like to start an off-line discusion for those of you who are willing to share some of you knowledge and experience with both Flash and Flex.  Since you are extremely busy, maybe you might be able to point me in the right direction.
Hopefully, some of you can provide some sound technical advice.
    Thanks in advance
    Michael Poplawski

This is an abitious project even for some-one well versed in flex/flash, i have to give you points for outstanding courage on this .
You need to cover quite a few areas in a project like this both for the client and the back end, you need a strong understanding of animation(either through code or the flash timeline), data parsing, logic trees for the quiz/test elements and a lot more before the first line of code would be written.
In Australia there are already a few companies using flex for online educational applications and at least 1 state educational Authority. A search on the internet will find several sites pertaining to flash/flex based online education software and this would be a starting point to give you an idea of the strength flex has in this area.
Beyond this it is not the sort of project that 'help' would be readily available for unless it was relating to very specific issues you could readily define. Also this is not the best forum to request this type of help as the forum is more about testing a beta product. I am sure that if you start learning about flex and have trouble understanding different aspects of how things work there will be plenty of support from the flex community.

  • Question about running flash from a DVD

I'd like to create an install splash screen which is
developed using Adobe Flash or Flex because if the rich
capabilities in Flash. When a user inserts the DVD, I want my
splash screen to autorun. The only problem I see is that the user
is required to have the flash player installed. Is there a way to
carry runtime libraries on the DVD so that I can run the splash
screen without requiring the user to install Flash? Thanks.

Thank you. Exactly what I needed. I'm new to Flash and Flex,
    but am getting hooked fast!!!!!

  • My Macbookpro shuts off after running flash

    Hi Everyone
My Macbook pro shuts down when I run flash programs...it's not all of the time though. I can get away with some video sites, like YouTube...but when running more intensive .swf's such as games, my macbook pro shuts completely off like a desktop computer losing power. It sounds like a fan on the right side of my computer turns on for half a minute and then the whole thing shuts down. I can use this as a warning to close down all of my programs, which sometimes prevents my computer from shorting.
I know that flash is a rather memory intensive program, especially on macs. Id assume this is a heatsink problem, but I'm wondering if it's my memory.
I can't remember when I first started having this problem but it might have been around when I upgraded my ram to two gigabytes.
my macbook pro is the very original, 1.85 ghz
I can't remember what ram was in it...it was the stock apple ram, 512 megs.
    I now have
2 GB 667 MHz ddr2 sdram inside. If you guys don't think ram could do this I will take it to a genius bar.
    thanks!

I'm gonna have to wait on the hardware test...unfortunately my install disk is packed far far away..but I'll be able to get it eventually.
The upgrade was a good recomendation, I thought it was going to work...played a game for about 15 minutes, and my computer shut down...
As far as my computer reaching the a critical heat...it just seems funny to me that this is isolated to only flash.
I primarily use this computer for work...For a long period of time every day I am running a combination of photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, indesign, etc...along with itunes, mail, sometimes quicktime. It's only when flash comes into to play either combined with other programs or just a flash swf running through firefox that my computer shuts off.

  • General Question - Flash or Flex

I am an executive responsible for a RIA application project
for my company... I am not a developer.
The application we are building involves live video chat,
non-live video player, text chat, and more...
I am trying to create an attractive design which will allow
minimizing of different components, drag-drop functions, movement,
    etc.
When suggesting working with Flex my designer told me Flex is
not as flexible as Flash and limits you in terms of design assets
you can use. He was specifically talking about pixel size of the
    different elements.
Is this really a limitation? Will I be only able to use the
existing templated Flex UI components, or can they be customized /
    re-designed?
    Thanks foryour help.

I would personally go with a mixture of the two. As far as
the RIA is concerned with the video chat, text chat, and all of
your features I think you would have a much easier time developing
those components within Flex then you would Flash. However getting
something to really look nice is accomplished much easier within
Flash seeing as how Flex's only drawing tools consist of code. So
depending on your design itself you can go very very deep into
getting something to look good with using CSS Styles themselves
however there are limitations that CSS isn't just gonna get the
look you want which is when it's time to switch over to what's
called "Skinning" this is where you replace the skin of the
component itself with one that's more desirable to your design. You
can develop your skins or photoshop and use either the exported SWF
or image to completely change the look of the component.
So my conclusion to this is I think developing your
application within Flex will produce a much more scalable
application in terms of being able to be expanded upon later,
however depending on the design you are looking for you will spend
a lot more time getting that extra "shadow" just where you want it.
The other thing you have to ask yourself (and your developer)
is what is better suited for your company? I've been inside Flex
everyday for over the past year now so I feel very comfortable in
writing an application like that within Flex, however lately the
only tinkering I do with Flash is freelance and skinning for Flex
so I'd have a much more difficult time developing it within Flash.
Is your developer more comfortable to accomplish the task in Flash
or in Flex? As well as is there time to compensate for a learning
curve for your decision of which to use?
Just my thoughts, hope this helps.

  • Is there a  way to run flash player on iPAd?

I am rather unhappy that I cannot run FlashPlayer on my iPad. I can't run most of my weather sites without it. As a boat captain I rely on weather sites for safety among other things and when I travel it becomes even more important. I find it ridiculous that apple won't run Flash and Java. If I can't run these I will go back to my laptop.

What you rather unfriendly and DEFINITELY unhelpful people fail to realize is 1) I am still, regrettably, using my laptop BECAUSE the iPad cannot run Flash Player. 2) As a PROFESSIONAL, whose livelihood and safety depend largely on weather and the ability to forecast CORRECTLY, not just with a pretty forecaster or cute comments, I SUBSCRIBE to PAY weather services which are much more accurate and detailed than the Weather Channel and Accuweather which try for mass appeal. SO STOP TELLING MY WHAT SIGHTS I SHOULD USE? After 30 years (20 with Internet) I chose my sites because of their quality. 3) I ASKED A SIMPLE QUESTION. With the exception of one or two answers, all the rest of you chose to attack me and criticize me for not wanting to use HTML5 or whatever garbage Apple chooses t shove in my face.
I could give a rat's &$@ what you think of me. I wanted to know if Apple could work for me and now I know it cannot. For now I will continue to lug my heavy laptop around and I will dedicate more time to researching a
Ight alternative. You APPLE JUNKIES are ridiculous. If somebody is unhappy with anything Apple, it is never Apple's fault. OK you run out and buy whatever you are TOLD. I for one choose to buy what works for me. I bout the iPad because everyone raved about how great it was - well, I found out that wasn't true.. in the few months I have owned it I have encountered MANY people unhappy with it for various reasons. YES IT WAS MY FAULT I PURCHASED IT WITHOUT SUFFICIENT RESEARCH--- I WON'T MAKE THAT MISTAKE AGAIN.
All you know-it-alls, can have your junk. I am happy with myself and when I make a mistake I recognize it and change it. I am doing that. I have no use for any of you. you are no help to anyone. Fortunately, I can go back to wonderful life out on the ocean, being paid for what most of you can only dream about doing even once. you on the other hand can go back to your litle cubiclels taking whatever corporate America shoves down your throat and believing it is best for you.
LASTLY, how is it that anyone who has a complaint is a troll? Do you all work for Apple? Or ar you just THAT BRAINWASHED? how lame a life you must have.

  • I need to know how to run Flash Player in a Vista 32-bit browser running on a 64-bit O.S.

Help please !  I have been reading for days, trying everything to find the answer to my dilemma, which BTW is making it impossible to use our new computer now. Every other minute it seems I get the message that I need to run Flash Player in a VISTA 32-bit browser which is actually running on a 64-bit operating system.  Do I have to uninstall a program (what and where is it) and then instal something else (from where etc.)?
Give me back our XP!  I get the idea that Adobe keeps SAYING they are developing a platform for Adobe Flash to run on a 64-bit, but I fear that is only a stall. Who is responsible for helping neophytes?  No matter how many times I have tried to contact Adobe, it is a joke.  One time, even though I do not have a subscription for service, the poor man took pity on me.  But his Indian accent was so severe I have ZERO idea what he was saying.  Can one of you wonderful, erudite, helpful people out there give me the solution in computer language 101?? I will be forever grateful.  I wish our computer "guru" had been smart enough to give us the pros and cons when he suggested Vista and 64..... When I am asked for a serial number even I have no earthly idea how to get that either.  I feel completely HELPLESS  and SLEEPLESS in Tucson.   Thanks SOOOO much to whomever can get me going in the right direction. (Forgive my LONG message.  I had to vent.  I feel better.) CLOWG

    Hi Clowg,
Sorry to hear that you are having trouble.  Unfortunately, I don't believe the folks here on this forum will be able to help you with your issue.  Have you tried posting on the Flash Player forum?

  • Switching from Flash to Flash Catalyst/Flex

For the last few years I have been developing applications for project reporting. To explain this in simplest terms, my clients give me hundreds of reports and supporting documents, graphics, videos, etc. which I then condense and reorganize into a presentation/application in Flash. The project is then published as an .exe to be burned to CD ROM or DVD along with any supporting files and is then distributed to project stake holders, investors, etc.
I'm considering the possibility of a switch from Flash to Flash Catalyst/Flex and want to outline what my needs are, here in the forum, in hopes that others now using Catalyst/Flex can help me decide if this is an appropriate move.
    Features needed:
    1. Basic animation, transitions, etc.
    2. Full Navigation (up to 3 levels) for up to 300 slides.
    3. Keyboard navigation (PageUp/PageDown) to navigate sequentially through the entire presentation.
    4. Linking into other applications and documents - Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.
    5. Full Screen Mode
    6. Slide Show Mode
    7. Search Features
    8. Slide sharing (via email)
    9. Video and audio w/controls
    10. Pan and Zoom w/controls (panning and zooming of graphics and .swf files)
    11. Scrolling (scrolling of text, graphics and .swf files)
    12. Interactive forms
Can anyone please comment specifically on these features and wether or not they are possible using Catalyst and/or Catalyst/Flex in combination.
Thank you all for any insight or suggestions.
    John

With the exception of making fre-form animations (like a cartoon for example), everything you can do in Flash can be done in Flex considerably faster.
The downside is that Flex applications (especially ones designed in Catalyst) are generally larger, and consume more memory. Personally, I never publish anything made in Catalyst without optimizing it in Flash Builder first.
If the drop in operating performance isn't a deal breaker (most of the time you can't even notice it), then I would certainly consider moving to Flex going forward on new projects.

  • How to tell a swf file in web was made by flash or flex?

the swf file in web, how to tell it was made by Flash or
    Flex? accurately!

Im not sure, but I would think that right now the main way to
tell the difference would be to find out if it requires Flash
Player 8.5 or not. Currently, Flash swfs only go to 8.0. Another
way is to look at the source of the HTML file. I notice that Flex
puts an incredible amount of code into the HTML file.

    Hello,
My gool is to disable the save icon of pdf document when i open the pdf document inside flex application.

This isn't something that can be managed from the Flex end of things. You have to configure the document DRM.

  • Why change from flash to flex?

    hi everyone
I'd like to know why is flex a better alternative to build
RIA applications then flash itself, because i can't find anywhere
the reasons to change, since flash can do almost anything that flex
can to, so please explain it to me. thanks

Let me try a short answer: I think Adobe targets two
different audiences with Flash and Flex: Flash is the authoring
tool for the design-oriented web artist. Flex on the other hand is
a powerful IDE for the application-oriented software developer.
Since both products share ActionScript and the SWF file format I'm
sure both sides will benefit from each other in the future.

  • Same fonts used in Flash and FLEX are different

Fonts used in Flash and Flex differs in appearance even though they are same. It lacks the anti alias property and shows pixelated in flex even if it appears normal in flash. Please see attachment.

There can be several reasons for that.  First make sure the font is embedded properly.  Rotate the object and see how it looks.  It is also possible that in Flex the fonts are being captured as a bitmap which can turn off AA at times.
