Running out of RAM & Fan Running

I have been having problems with my Mac Book since around Nov. 2010 which just continue to get worse.   My system (now 10.6.8) continues to gobble up RAM though no programs are running.  Had 2G of RAM that was using up 75% of the RAM so upgraded to 4G of RAM, within 2 days (& after restarts) am back to the system using up around 65% of the RAM.  Fan runs & computer hot for no apparent reason, with just safari & this page open.  Have added Privacy for my bootcamp partition in Spotlight, still seems to have the problem.  Have reset the PRAM & SCM.  Anyone else with this problem?

Looking at your Free RAM is a useless measure, as the goal of any operating system should be to take full advantage of all the RAM it can.  Otherwise it is wasting your money because you paid for something the OS is not using, and worse, it is not taking full advantage of the best resource for allowing your system to run at its faster.
The operating system should be giving RAM to any process that needs it, and if the applications do not need it, the operating system should be using that RAM for a file system cache so you can avoid very expensive disk I/O.  And by expensive, I mean expensive in time, expensive in power consumption, and expensive in wear and tear on your disk drive.
On Mac OS X, you want to look at both Free and Inactive memory to see how much memory is availble for processes to use.  Inactive memory is often used a a file system cache.  But Inactive memory may also contain the code for a recently quit program so that if you start that program again, it can quickly be re-activated from the cached code already in memory.
As Linc has suggested, you want to look at Activity Monitor and see if there is an app or daemon that is consuming lots of Real Memory.
If you think your Mac is using too much memory, then you might also run an Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal -> "sar -g 60 100" command, which should let you see your pageout activity once a minute for 100 minutes (adjust the numbers to suite your tastes).  If mostly you have zero or very low numbers, you are NOT suffering from lack of RAM.  If you have a few spikes, that might come from starting a new app, or switching between apps.  If you have sustained pageout activity, that might indicate the work you are doing it stressing your available RAM and might benefit from running fewer concurrent apps, or getting more RAM for what you are doing.
It is very rare for the operating system itself to be the cause of excessive RAM usage.  More frequently it is an app or daemon that gets memory hungry.
Also Linc's suggestion to boot in Safe Mode is an excellent idea, as that will eliminate any 3rd party drives, kernel extensions, or daemons.  If the problem continues when running in Safe Mode, then that would increase your argument that it is something Apple provided.  If the problem goes away when booted in Safe Mode, it tends to indicate there is a 3rd party driver, kernel extension, or daemom that is causing the problem.

  • Photoshop 2014 keeps running out of ram and I am losing my work.

When I save a PSD file I get the message "out of ram and cannot save", or cannot clone, use brush, etc. because out of ram.  This is when I first open photoshop too.
I have a new machine with 32 gigs of ram and 1 terrabyte SS memory.  Scratch disks are pointed to my hard drive and two external drives.
I have had Photoshop older versions on much smaller machines in the past and never run out of ram.  This is a bug in photoshop 2014 - no one has been able to fix it so far.
I am losing work and time when I have deadlines to make.  Photoshop is becoming worthless - I am going to use gimp.......

That is blatant user error.  If you have other drives, UNCHECK your boot drive as a scratch disk.
The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open.  I have seen the scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS which is not checkedlisted as a scratch disk in Photoshop Preferences..  I also have 16 GB of RAM installed.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.

  • MacBook Pro out of RAM when nothing is running?

Okay so I have a brand new 13 inch non-retina MacBook Pro with a 2.9 GHz i7 and 4GB of RAM. I understand when I am running a game or FCPX why I would get close to or run out of RAM, but as I'm typing this, the only thing I have open is Google Chrome and Activity Monitor. I am using 3.99 out of 4.00 GB. I am planning on upgrading to 8GB soon, but is this normal? I have restarted and that doesn't help me. Here is a picture of Activity Monitor:

It most certainly is normal with Mavericks.  Please read this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5890
RAM usage under 10.9 id different than with priors OSX's.  Do install the additional 4 GB RAM but relax regarding the current usage.
    Ciao.

  • Running out of RAM; skipping

I'm using AEcs3 and doing a roto. As I work, it "seems" like it's running out of RAM. At first I thought it was coz iTunes was open; closed it. Then it would happen again, I thought it was my Wacom tablet; unplug & plug, made sure it was updated to latest driver. It would still happen, so I reboot, flash the PRAM and have no programs opening and only using the mouse. When iTunes was on, the music would skip, like a CD. With nothing running except AE, then the mouse stops working and turns black, no beach ball, then I have control again. I even shutoff nucleo Pro. I don't know if this is an AE issue or an OS issue. This is the first time I've seen this. Any ideas?

Well, it needs to render the paint strokes and depending on their number, this can indeed cause massive RAM consumption, as they are vector-based. Therefore you may wanna pre-render the sections you already have and start with a "clean slate" on the rest of them. It will take some more effort to manage the various versions, but should make working easier. Also do not forget to purge the Undo list and RAM previews regularly, this may also help.

  • Keep running out of RAM!! (even with 12GBs of it)

I work on some complex maps with lots of lines and vertices and lables, etc... so basically a lot of
stuff. the maps themselfs are about 30MB-60MB so not really that huge either. and the are all vector-based
I keep upgrading our computer and adding more and more memory and still I keep getting this "Can't complete operation, out or RAM" or soemthing to that effect when I do big oprations (large copy/paste, moving complex groups, etc...)
    I use Illustrator CS4.
    Windows XP 64-Bit (2003, SP 2)
    Intel Core i7 920 (2.67 GHz)
    12 GB of RAM
I continue to add more and more power but yet still run out of RAM
Is there something i'm missing? I researched the internet to see if there is a setting or something, but found nothing.
Should I keep adding more memory or am I waiting my money?
    Should I try installing Windows 7 64bit?
    Should I wait for CS5?
    What else?
    Hope you can help!

    Should I try installing Windows 7 64bit?
Yes, that might help. While you are still bound to the limitations of any 32bit app (simple computer math sets the 4GB memory ceiling, minus operating system requirements etc.), stability and reliability may improve greatly.
    Should I wait for CS5?
You could, you could not. You could just assume it is more stable because on a general level, more bugs have been fixed, but I wouldn't hold my breath for a 64bit version. Officially only After Effects, Premiere Pro and Photoshop have been announced as being "64bit native"...

  • Is anyone else having problems running out of RAM following an upgrade to Mavericks and Server v3?

I recently upgraded to Mavericks on my iMac which was also running Server v2.  Following the upgrade to Mavericks I upgraded to Server v3 and have been suffering from constant errors where the computer complains that I have run out of RAM and suspends all applications until I restart the computer.  I cannot work out how to turn off or delete the Server and therefore cannot isolate the problem to OS X or Server.
Is anybody else experiencing the problem?  I am quite happy to delete the server running on the iMac as I only installed for experimental purposes and only really use it as a caching server at the moment.
    Any help gratefully received.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Why am I always running out of RAM?

For a pair of weeks now I have been doing all I am capable to understand the problem I have been experiencing. The language and terminology if my issue is somewhat foreign to me, but here is my best explanation.
On my Mac Pro 8-core 2.8 GHz tower with 8 GB of RAM I am finding myself running very few operations but end up in a situation where I can visibly see my performance bogging down as if I am out of RAM.
So I have been running activity monitor and what I am seeing is 40 MB of "Free" RAM with 630 MB "Wired", 2.5 GB "Inactive" and about 5 GB of "Active".
I understand some of the basics of what these terms mean. Here is one thing I am 100% certain: after a reboot I start with a massive majority of "Free" or "Green Colored Pie Section" of RAM and when this is happening, my performance is fantastic. Whenever I have a few GB's of RAM, I never complain about my performance.
Here is something I am almost 100% certain of: when my performance is poor or lacking, I notice two things that I find alarming: 1) I have under 100MB of "Free" RAM and 2) 50-60% of the RAM pie is colored yellow indicating "Active".
I am using very common applications and even when I quit all of my applications (except activity monitor) the active RAM is still dominating my 'pie'.
That's the best I can do for now, any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Both "Free" and "Inactive" are (supposed to be) available for use by any process that wants it.
When you first start up, most memory is, of course, "Free." As apps or system processes need memory, that's where OSX gets it. When they release it, however, it does not go back to Free, but to "Inactive" and is identified with the last process that used it. This is done to speed up assigning it back to the previous process if it requests it (which of course is quite common).
So as time passes, you'll see less and less Free memory and more and more Inactive memory; this means your Mac is working properly. In fact, after running for a long time, if there's much Free memory left, it is, in a sense, wasted!
The thing to watch for is Paging. If the "Page outs" figure is high, or changing rapidly, then OSX is having to page stuff out because it's out of both Free and Inactive memory.
A better way to monitor page-outs is via a Terminal command. (The Terminal app is in your Applications/Utilities folder.) Enter the following, exactly as shown, at the prompt:
    sar -g 60 10
Leave the terminal window open, then try to re-create the unresponsive problem.
This should tell you if you are doing pageouts. You'll see a line in the Terminal window every 60 seconds for 10 minutes (or until you quit Terminal), showing the number of pageouts per second. A few pageouts is normal. If you have large numbers of pageouts, then you have a memory problem.

  • AM I running out of RAM?

I am  running a late 2013 iMac with 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7. I have 16 GBs of Ram but it still seems lacking sometimes.
And by that I mean I may go to add an attachment to an e-mail and it hangs for a few seconds. And the same tends to happen when saving almost any form of doc including text docs. It's nothing dramatic just a tad frustrating.
I do have a tendency to leave multiple apps open including processor hoggers like Screenflow and Fuze meeting. I will also probably have Spotify, Chrome and Firefox, Skype, Mac Mail, Echofon for Twitter, iTunes, Pages, Word and Excel, Calendar and Preview open at the same time.
I know this is a lot but for the most part I need them. Am I simply running out of Ram when it slows and would 32 GB make a big difference?
    Thanks

That's normal.  With Mavericks it wants to use as much of the memory as possible.  It's the memory pressure and amount of swap files that you need to look at:
As long as the memory pressure is constant and there's no Swap used you shouldn't worry. The OS will free up what's needed for any new app that is launched.  More about compressed memory and memory management with Mavericks can be found here: https://www.apple.com/osx/advanced-technologies/

  • RAM: I Keep Running Out of RAM!

Hey guys, I've got a mid-2011 Mac Mini here with 8GB of RAM. I've looked through 'Activity Monitor' to close apps so that I've got more RAM, but I still keep running out of RAM.
What can I do? I don't want to buy more RAM.
Firefox seems to be using quite a bit of RAM.

  • Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram

I have 1 TB of SS memory in my machine and photoshop is telling me I am out of ram.  I can't do any image larger than 1024 x 1024.  I specified my hard drives as backup and increased the memory size to max.
Still can't work on any large images.
My old machine had only 250 Gigs of SS memory and it would do any size of image just fine.
    thanks,

  • Maxing out on RAM

    Hey
My old powerbook came with 128, I added 512 to start then exchanged that with a 1gig so it was running on 1.128. No problem at all. Spec said max was 640.
I now have the macbook pro 2.16 C2D 15.4 screen. It came with a removable gig ram and I had a gig from my previous MBP. However - I feel 2gig is not enough. This MBP says it can only do 3gig ram. Recent models can do 4. I'm wondering if anyone has maxed out the ram on a 3gig version and run it on 4.
I'm thinking of pullng out both 1gigs and sticking 2x2gig in it. Just want to make sure it is possible.
    Appreciate any help.

    Hi,
one benefit of 2x2GB is that you still have the 'pairing' advantage of some small percentage more speed when the memory is accessed.
And secondly, if you decide to get a Santa Rosa MBP in the future you can use this memory for it.
Other than that, you are right, not much use.
    Have Fun
    Stefan

  • Out of Ram for cropping

I only have 8gb of ram. But as I track it's use (in an HD 1920x1080 timeline), I find I get Out of Ram messages upon rendering multiple layers of FCP-cropped 2500x2000 RGB jpeg stills. I tried it uncropped and got no error. But ram usage shows no more 5.5 gig of ram. Am I really using more ram than it's showing? Would I be able to perform these feats if I had 12 gb RAM? I seems very sensitive to this type of work.

FCP is a 32 bit application which limits the amount of RAM it can address to 4 GB (2.5 for FCP and 1.5 for related frameworks) Of this 2.5 GB for FCP, you can change the distribution and allocate more for still images. Keep in mind, this is a fixed pool so if you allocate more for stills, you remove it from other uses within the program.
The settings to adjust the memory allocation in FCP can be found in System Settings>Memory & Cache
With more than 4GB of ram in the machine, your Application Use should be 100%. If you are running a lot of larger stills, you might want to bump up the Still Cache an additional 10% -20% or so and see how things run.
    Good luck,
    x

  • Warcraft and out-of-control fans?

My 13-year old son spends a lot of time on our iMac 5 playing World-of-Warcraft—too much in fact, but that's another issue.
Anyway, I've noticed that sometimes I'll walk into the room when he's playing and the iMac sounds like it's going to take off. In the past, the only way I could fix the out-of-control fans was to completely reinstall Mac OS X—a little extreme I know. I suspect that Warcraft is corrupting something—perhaps the PRAM, NVRAM, or something else. I know how to reset the PRAM, but I think resetting the NVRAM involves using the Terminal and I can'y find the instructions on how to do that.
Does anyone know what causes this and how it can be fixed. Other than this problem, our iMac runs great! Here are the system specs:
    iMac G5 20" 2GHz
    1 GB DDR SDRAM
    Mac OS 10.4.8
    250 GB HD (195.35 available)
    Thanks,
    Kelly

  • I used to use PS7 then upgraded everything including computers.  Now I get out of ram errors all the time. Not Happy!!  Ideas?

I used to be able to minipulate huge photoshop files.
Now I can't even get one to go from 20 to 50 gig!
All I get is this out of ram error.
I have a 400G scratch disk and well over optimum on all settings!
    NOT HAPPY!!

It would be necessary that you have to use "Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool". (see Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6 )
The order varies depending on your individual needs:
    1. Maybe you have to activate/deactivate, so please have a look there:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.html
    2. Sometimes, we know in the meantime, the "opm.db file" is the culprit. In this case you should delete it.
    3. Did you already try "uninstalling and re-installing"? Be careful with (de)installing aso. by (de)installing by your own resources. As much as I regret it and as strange as it may seem I fear it's a challenge for Adobe's Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. Sometimes - for whatever reasons - CC doesn't "want" to work. In this case you should CC completely delete and reinstall by help of Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. (A try to uninstall by own resources is not enough!)
I quote: Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool helps resolve installation problems for Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite (CS3-CS6) applications. The tool removes installation records for prerelease installations of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications. It does not affect existing installations of previous versions of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications.
Please use: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html   and follow the prescribed sequence of operations
    4. If necessary and for further questions click through http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html or http://helpx.adobe.com/de/contact.html and if "open" please use chat, I had the best experiences.  The chat button is activated as soon as there is an agent available to help.

  • Photoshop out of ram error message

I have 32 Gigs of ram and two SS hard drives for memory backup.  I am constantly getting error messages that say Photoshop is out of ram and can't continue.
Is there a bug in the latest release.
    thanks,
    Julian

How much free scratch space can Photoshop get check your Photoshop Preferences Performance settings when you get that message.  I have seen PS use nearly 200GB.  You can see in my setting there are still 270GB free of top of the 4 GB CC currently using with no open documents in CC 2014.
