The media used in the Applet is an avi file and runs in all major Player.
The code is same as in jmf examples, is there something special needed to run JMF in an Applet.
Please reply as this would decide whether to use JMF in creating customized media player in a project.
Thanks

Can understand your concern but you will have to take call what is your use case and what you are ok with and what you are not ok with.
"record" mode would automatically take care of file clean up - in sense that will overwrite data. But then if you consider "accidental" stop of your encoder and restart like you mentioned , if you wanted old data to be there - you will loose it with record option.
Since you have Interactive edition - there are lots of ways you can handle it. One of the ways - is like you can use flag to decide whether its first publish to the application - if yes use record mode or else use append mode (but then again accidental unloading of application will reset the flag - but this ideally should be very rare if things are working fine on server-side unlike encoder restart which can be due to network)
Please feel free to post again if you need any more help.

Anyone have an idea how to make it actually run?

• HSQLDB Queries fail only from JSP

I am new to Servlets and JSP and have encountered a weird problem when trying to query HSQLDB from JSP pages. If I write a small servlet and deploy it from the same web application with the same classpath, the connection succeeds and queries return. Every previous question I have seen about this has been resolved by a classpath problem, but I have verified that the hsqldb.jar is getting loaded in my classpath, and the servlet works fine in the same webapp. Just not the JSP page. Any ideas? This is really frustrating. Thanks!
Karl

First of all let me say thanks for your help! I think at this point it's just a matter of getting to work because it should and I want to know what I am doing wrong. To test things out, I wrote a JSP in the same directory as the one which is failing. Instead of using the JSTL sql tags I just wrote a scriptlet inline which uses the java JDBC code directly. This should have the same classpath and access as the JSTL code, right? Anyway, it works fine. So maybe I am running into a bug in the JSTL of some kind? Here is the working code:
<%@ page import="java.sql.*" %>
<%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/core_rt" %>
<%@ taglib prefix="sql" uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/sql_rt" %>

People

<%
try {
Class.forName("org.hsqldb.jdbcDriver");
Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(
"jdbc:hsqldb:hsql://localhost:9001/",
"mrfoo",
"foo"
Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT first, middle, last FROM people");
%>

First

Middle

Last

<%
while(rs.next()) {
out.print("
");
out.print(
"
" + rs.getString("first") + "
"
out.print(
"
" + rs.getString("middle") + "
"
out.print(
"
" + rs.getString("last") + "
"
out.print("
");
%>

<%
rs.close();
stmt.close();
conn.close();
catch (SQLException se) {
System.out.println( "SQL Exception:" ) ;
// Loop through the SQL Exceptions
while( se != null ) {
System.out.println("State : " + se.getSQLState() );
System.out.println("Message : " + se.getMessage() );
System.out.println("Error : " + se.getErrorCode() );
se = se.getNextException();
%>

Here, on the other hand, is the not working code:
<%@ page import="org.hsqldb.*" %>
<%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/core_rt" %>
<%@ taglib prefix="sql" uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/sql_rt" %>

<sql:setDataSource var="datasource"
driver="org.hsqldb.jdbcDriver"
url="jdbc:hsqldb:hsql://localhost:9001/"
user="mrfoo" password="foo" />
<sql:query var="people" dataSource="${datasource}">
SELECT first, middle, last FROM people
</sql:query>

First Name

Middle Name

Last Name

<c:forEach var="row" items="${people.rows}">

${row.first}

${row.middle}

${row.last}

</c:forEach>

I'm starting to think JSTL<->HSQLDB bug... Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

• Can we run external mail program from JSP / Servlet deployed on tomcat

Hi folks,
Had a tough time getting JavaMail API to work, finally when things seem to be working
there were some issues with the vendor's server, so finally gave up the idea.
On the server Apache and Tomcat are integrated via mod_jk and currently I redirect to a php page
which acts as a helper to send mail, however for the given business needs and server's limitations
there are potential security holes.
So I was wondering if I could directly execute the linux sendmail program from JSP/Servlet
as we would in a standalone java program or do we need special settings on Tomcat to execute external
programs.
Please let me know your views / ideas / comments on this
Thanks in advance
Abishek

Hi
It's not designed for you to be able to do this, it needs to run through 10gAS or 11gWeblogic.

• How to run a Oracle 9i .JSP report from outside 9i Reports Builder

Hi,
I have successfully created a .JSP report from within 9i Reports Builder. It runs fine and generates desired output using Run -> Web Layout from the Reports Buider menu. The output is a .htm one.
Now, my requirement is to run this .JSP from my application without using Reports Builder. In other words, I want to integrate this .JSP with my existing application which will fetch data dynamically for the user. There is no hint to this solution in the 9i Reports Tutorial available at OTN.
A sample code would be highly helpful.
Regards,
- Partha

partha,
you deploy a reports-jsp to your oracle9i application server like any other JSP. copy it to a directory in the application servers document tree.
when you execute the reports-jsp it will need a reports server (in process or stand alone) to execute since the actual data-management is done by the reports-server.
regards,
philipp
PS : if you have further reports related questions, you might want to post those in the reports forum here on OTN.

• Running an exe file from jsp

Hi,
Do you know a way to run the "startup.exe" Tomcat file from jsp?
I have to start and stop a server remotely.
Max

public Process pFiglio;
Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
pFiglio = rt.exec("c:\\Tomcat\\startup.exe ");
then you can have
pFiglio.waitFor();
iEsito = pFiglio.exitValue();
pFiglio.destroy();
Look at specification:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/
Look class "Runtime" and "Process".

• How to run .ksh file in unix from .jsp files

Hi frnd,
How to connect unix servers from .jsp file & I want to run unix scripts .ksh files from .jsp files
Thanku
bhupathipawan

It is usually a bad idea to do any major processing directly within a JSP. It is better to create a helper class and invoke methods on that. This helper class can then be tested outside of the inhospitable JSP environment.
To run the '.ksh' file you will need to use either Runtime.exec() or the more modern ProcessBuilder. You will save yourself a lot of grief if you read thoroughly the 4 sections of http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-2000/jw-1229-traps.html and then implement the recommendations.
Note - although the 'traps' article is written around the use of Runtime.exec(), it's content is equally applicable to ProcessBuilder.

viewer.dispose();
catch(Exception e)
throw new JspException( e);
%>

I never really had much luck with this approach.
Mind you I was using Crystal Reports 10, and as far as I recall it didn't allow setting/changing of database at this level.
Things to check
- can you create a database connection on your page with this URL/username/password?
- what server are you using? Tomcat? WebLogic?
I found this in your other post:
Connection Information: {Server Name=ee6rpt, Connection String=DSN=s(ee6rpt);User ID=s(ee62test);Password=;UseDSNProperties=b(false), Database Name=, Database DLL=crdb_odbc.dll}That would indicate it is using odbc to connect to the database (crdb_odbc.dll). ODBC is a bad idea with java.
The way I have got it to work for me (after much trial and error) was to in Crystal Reports to connect using the Oracle Driver, and specifying a tnsname - eg define REPORT_DS in tnsnames.ora.
When running through the JRC, it looked for a JNDI datasource under that same name "REPORT_DS".
Don't know if that will help you or not.
Good luck,

• Passing correct image-file path in flashVar from jsp into embedded Flex application

I have an application that embeds an image viewer, written in
Adobe Flex within a jsp page running in a J2EE application on
Tomcat 5.5. The Flex code is a one-line modification of the
application displayed at (
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/samples/fig_panzoom/).
The image viewer is founded and loaded in the output to the
screen, but I cannot get the Image Viewer to display the image
correctly, even though I succeed when either I run the .swf from
the command-line or from an HTML page.
My webapp is called FRSApp. The directory structure is, under
FRSApp:
myTest.html
jsp/catalog.jsp
pan_zoom_files/images/map.jpg
The JSP code is thus,
code:
<%@ taglib prefix="mm" uri="FlexTagLib" %>
<mm:mxml
source="../pan_zoom_files/FIG_PanZoom_for_jsp.mxml" >
<mm:flashvar name="myVar"
value="/FRSApp/pan_zoom_files/images/map.jpg"/>
</mm:mxml>
the code within PanZoom.mxml is,
private var _imageURL:String =
Application.application.parameters.myVar;
<ns1:ImageViewer
id="imageViewer"
imageURL="{ _imageURL }"
bitmapScaleFactorMax="5"
bitmapScaleFactorMin=".05"
width="100%" height="100%"
x="0" y="0"/>
I have tried other paths to the image file, including
images/map.jpg [required by command-line execution of .swf]
pan_zoom_files/images/map.jpg [required by HTML page
(myTest.html) that embeds the .swf file]
I have succeeded in loading image viewer embedded in the jsp
page when the image path is hard-coded in the mxml file, by means
of the following code:

The error is either a "failed to load image" generated by the
Image Viewer code, or a Flex system error message, resembling a
null-pointer exception:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of
a null object reference.

at mx.managers::SystemManager/docFrameHandler()
Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!

Solved the problem. I had made several mistakes. One of them
was to pass in the J2EE context path when what was needed was the
fully qualified image url:
http://localhost/FRSApp/pan_zoom_files/images/earth-map_small.jpg.
The second mistake was to assume the flashvar variable could be
picked up by initializing Action Script in the the mxml file,
designated by <mx:script> tags. No, the flash variable will
only be visible within the <mx:Application>
</mx:Application> tags.

• Execute option missing from JSP drop down menu

I'm going through a Java Web Development class and trying to produce a small web app through Sun Java Studio Enterprise 7 2004Q4. I have two servlets, a couple of classes and two JSPs. At seemingly random times the "Execute" and "Execute (force reload)" options from the drop down menu you get when you right click a JSP fails to show up. It isn't grayed out, it just isn't there. Most of the time these options are there. And they can be there one time and then for the same project, same set of JSPs everything, they just disappear.
Can anyone tell me what dumb thing I'm doing to cause this?
And can anyone tell me how to fix it once I've done it?
Thanks
DR Crowley

First of all thank you for all the time you are spending on this. Believe me I know how frustrating it can be to figure out what is happening when you can't reproduce the problem.
On to your questions: I am running Windows XP Professional. I have checked and made sure that the extension is still .jsp and that it isn't changing. No I don't have the IDE set up to show extensions, however the icon beside the file is the jsp icon and when I go to Windows explorer (where I do have it set to show known extensions) it is a .jsp file and does not have the ever exasperating hidden extension that windows is infamous for. Sun Studio seems to recognize the file as a proper jsp (due to the icon).
As to your further questions. I am executing it by right clicking on the jsp file itself. And the jsp file is in the documents folder not in the web/inf folder.
At this point we are out of the class and it isn't nearly as important that I get an fix. We (our company) will probably not do jsp files and servlets thourgh Sun Java Studio Enterprsise. Instead we are looking at using Sun Java Studio Creater to do the view layer.
Thanks for all your help and the time you took to try to figure this out.
