Rutilt without root password?

Is there any way to use rutilt or wifi-radar without sudo or a root password, as is done with e.g. wicd and networkmanager? I'm getting sick of wicd's bugs, but the root access requirement is annoying - can I make these applications respect the network group, or allow some other group to use them without root priveleges? Or would that be too insecure?

I've been using wifi-radar for ages and really like it.  To avoid having to run as root or enter password I've added to /etc/sudoers file:
username ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/wifi-radar
I don't know if this would be what you want as it's kinda using sudo without having to type in "sudo wifi-radar".  wifi-radar is added to my DAEMONS list in rc.conf and works great.  I also have a wifi-radar icon in my E17 ibar so I can check out other access points if I want.  Come to think of it, is what I'm doing insecure?  Never really thought about it.

  • Root Password for Cluster bounce

    Hi All,
    Is there any way we can bounce and do CRS activity without root password.
    I am using Oracle 11gR2 RAC on AIX 6.1
    I think that root password with DBAs is not a good practice.
    Is there any alternative solution ,please suggest.
    Thanks

    Not all CRS activity requires root.
    Stopping/starting/relocating resources to mention a few can all be done as the grid user.
    For the rest which do require root you can ask your SA to implement sudo.

  • [SOLVED] load VirtualBox modules without root pw

    Hi,
    i want to write a wrapper script for virtualbox to load the modules when virtualbox starts and unload them when it exits.
    is there a way to load those specific modules without root password? i could teach sudo to allow modprobe without password but that would be a security problem.

    I'm experiencing some problems with suspend to ram on my x230t. since kernel 3.10 i often get a kernel panic when i suspend.
    i use an up to date system (no testing) with linux-ck-ivybridge and intel graphics. i wrote systemd scripts to unload third party modules before suspend (like vboxdrv).
    that actually doesn't solve the problem but i thought it might be a good idea if only loading such modules when they are really needed, i don't use virtualbox often.
    thanks for the reply, i think this can work. the script can only be changed by root so this would be no security problem.
    so this is solved, i'm thinking about a new topic regarding my kernel panics, do you know where to get the kernel logs of the panic?
    when i go to suspend the sleep led blinks fast and the screen is blank, so i have to rely on log files.

  • Shutdown from SliM without typing root password

    Something similar to GDM's shutdown button...why does slim need the root password ?
    As a second best, I tried setting up acpid to send the shutdown signal upon pressing the power button but that doesn't work until i'm logged in.
    Any suggestions ?

    I do have sudo set up so that I can shut down that way. I know that unix is multi user system but this is my laptop we're talking about and only I use it.

  • Auto mounting disk drives on click without prompting root password

    I've installed Arch linux using the instructions given on the Beginner's Guide wiki.
    I want to auto mount a file system (partition) when I click on a partition from the default toolbar or from within nautilus, without prompting me to provide the root password for the system.
    I'm using 'gdm' as one of the DAEMONS entries to start the graphical environment in /etc/rc.conf
    Following the above mentioned wiki, I had deleted the '~/.xinitrc' file as it was mentioned in here.
    Now, how do I find(or regenerate) a backup copy of this above mentioned file, to add the line ''exec ck-launch-session"?
    Or, is there some other way to get the desired functionality working for me?

    As for the .xinitrc file:
    @skunktrader: This is exactly what I wanted, the '/etc/skel/' directory. Never realized that directory there. Thanks!!!
    @Mr.Elendig: Creating the file manually was too obvious. Thanks anyway!!
    As for my requirement:
    Even after placing the .xinitrc to my home directory and appending the line 'exec ck-launch-session gnome-session', I'm still being prompted for root authenication when trying to mount the partition from the desktop environment.

  • How to allow users to launch SMC; login to SMC without root account

    I've very familliar with how to create accounts and assign members to groups and assign privliges in Solairs 10 using SMC. I want a user to review the audit logs using the SMC console since the logs are GUI but I don't want the user to use the root account to login to SMC. I know the user can use the su command but I can only login with root after typing su and then launch SMC.
    Bottom line what is the best way a user can use the SMC console without having the root password to execute SMC and then login to SMC and view the audit logs?
    A million thanks
    John

    I found the best solution is to use a Role Based Access Control (RBAC). Using SMC as root go the the Role Icon and setup a Role using the wizzard. Next have the user login to the system, go to the terminal and type:
    /usr/sadm/bin/smc &
    The individual user will be prompted to login with his specific user name and password and then prompted to use the Role Login Name and Password you provided in the above paragraph.
    Now the user can perform SMC functions without the need for root.

  • How to create/reset root password on OSX Yosemite

    Hi,
    I am currently a standard user on a late 2008 Macbook Pro. There are two users on my computer, mine and another admin account. I do not know the password to the admin account. Before I upgraded to OSX Yosemite I had created a root user password in SUM using the command "passwd". After I upgraded (I reset my computer) I was back at square one, me as a standard user and another admin account that I didn't know the password. After I upgraded the “passwd” command didn’t work.
    I tried to obtain the root password using multiple SUM commands like, "rm /var/db/ .AppleSetupDone" which didn't work because it said that it couldn't find the file. Then I tried to use the command, “/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist” and then entering “passwd”. However that didn’t work. (Everything I did was after I mounted the drive.)
    So I was wondering if anyone on the forums knew of a way for a standard user to reset the root password without the knowledge of the admin password.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey SamuraiPizzzaCat,
    Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to use automatic login. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
    OS X Yosemite: Login Options pane of Users & Groups preferences
    Automatic login
    Choose Off to require users to log in whenever the Mac restarts.
    To automatically log in a particular user when the Mac restarts, choose the user’s account name and enter his or her password.
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • Shaman doesn't ask for root password. But gets root privileges!!

    As the title says:
    Shaman is launched as a reguler user, never asks for root password, but still i able to install and uninstall packages.
    Either something in my system is seriously fucked, or there is a major securiy problem with shaman.
    Running openbox, installed shaman while running gnome, if that has anythiung to say. Sudo is not installed.
    Output from running shaman in terminal:

    The point of this thread was that you don't need to enter the root password at all. Not the first time, not ever.
    As far as I understand, it is supposed to work like this: When you first use shaman too install anything, it asks for the root password You can tick a "Do not ask me again"-box, so you don't have to enter the password again. If you tick the box and enter the password, shaman add the lines
    [auth]
    askforpwd=false
    to the users shaman.conf-file (~./config/shaman/shaman.conf) The next time shaman is run, it checks the config file, and if the askforpwd value is set to false, it grants itself root privileges (with some nifty setuuid root-thingy, I imagine) This is not the problem - this is the feature.
    The bug is this:
    the fact that any user can add the lines
    [auth]
    askforpwd=false
    to his own shaman.conf file, without ever entering the root password in shaman. The next time shaman is run, it checks the config file, and if the askforpwd value is set to false, it grants itself root privileges - even though the user has never entered the root password.
    This works for any unprivileged user on the system.
    If that is indeed a feature intended by any sane person, then I'm Mother Mary. And that can't be, seeing as I don't have breasts.

  • Solaris 8, no root password, no login

    During install I got a message like 'could not write /etc/passwd, is locked', I still continue the install, then after a while the install asks for the second software disk, this one is not recognized, so I skip it. Then after rebooting the system, it asks for a login and password, so I enter root en give my password. No way, it won't comply. So I try changing the /a/etc/passwd file (it seems to be the new environment), for instance by adding a line test::::: , so no password should be asked, this also does not work. Removing de root password from the passwd file does not work either. So, who can help me loggin in into the system without a root password, on a Linux machine this is no problem in stand-alone mode no password is asked. Booting with the b -s option gets you into the stand-alone or service mode. This is my last try, then I will throw Sun away......
    PS. My system is fully recognized by the install software. No problem there.
    Thanx....

    Did you remove the 2nd entry in /etc/shadow file?
    Each entry in the shadow file has the form:
    username:password:lastchg:min:max:warn:inactive:expire:flag

  • Root password changed

    Hi.. the root password of my server is changed without anybody's knowlegde.
    I'm now not able to login to this server. however i'm able to login to the sc> prompt.
    Is there any way to reset the root password from sc> prompt ?
    what would be the best way to recover the root password?
    Regards
    Nirvana

    You should be able to get to ok prompt after sending a break from the sc> prompt.
    Your zones should not be impacted except to be shutdown when the system is shutdown.
    Find out who changed the root password and why so that you can prevent
    this problem in the future.
    You have a couple of recovery options:
    1. Boot failsafe mode to either boot from a BE with a known, good root password or reset
    the unknown root password by copying and pasting a known, good root password
    into the /etc/shadow file. You can't reset the root passwd by using the passwd
    command from failsafe mode. At least, I couldn't.
    ok boot -F failsafe
    You are prompted to mount the BE.
    # export TERM
    # vi /a/etc/shadow
    # reboot
    2. Boot this system from media or from the network, import the root pool and mount
    the BE (if this a ZFS BE) and carefully remove the unknown root password entry
    in the shadow file.
    ok boot net -s
    # zpool import -R /a rpool
    # zfs mount rpool/ROOT/s10BE
    # TERM=vt100
    # export TERM
    # vi /a/etc/shadow
    3. Whether you boot failsafe (#1) or boot from media (#2), you should be
    able to log back into the CONSOLE as root and reset the root password if you weren't
    able to paste in a known, good password.
    # passwd -r files root

  • Delete root password

    Hi i am trying to enable root access as i need to perform a check on something and it seems that there is already a root password issued. when i enabled root in netinfo then went and tried to enter a password it says inncorret password meaning there is an old password and to change it i have to enter it. i have enabled root on this machince before to do various things but i always disable it and i thought that upon disabling root it also deletes the root password you set. is there a way to delete it manually with a terminal command or something?
    macbook core duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.83 ghz processor, 1 gb ram

    If you have an "admin" account, you could set a new password for the "root" account using 'passwd' or 'dsenableroot', i.e. either of:<pre>sudo passwd root
    dsenableroot -u adminusername</pre>For that matter, are you sure there is a need to enable to "root" user at all? An "admin" account can be used for many administrative functions without resorting to "root"...

  • Can't mount internal partitions whithout root password

    I've been making the transition to systemd as the required updates. After last pacman -Syu, when polkit was updated, I could no longer access the CD/DVD, USB devices and the not listed in /etc/fstab internal partitions, due to permissions errors.
    I have tried searching the forums and found this topic: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1185531.
    As suggested there I've added init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd to the kernel parameters in grub2 and then I can access the CD/DVD and USB devices but to access the internal partitions root password is required.
    Searching the forums again I found this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=152057 and follow the sugestion by creating the file /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/10-mount-system.rules. This doesn't work for me. So I created rc-local.service, as recommended in the same topic. Still doesn't work.
    Came back to search foruns and found this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1189842. I've replaced the old /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/10-mount-system.rules by 10-udisks2.rules with the follow content:
    // See the polkit(8) man page for more information
    // about configuring polkit.
    // Allow udisks2 to mount devices without authentication
    // for users in the "storage" group.
    polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
        if ((action.id == "org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount-system" ||
             action.id == "org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount") &&
        subject.isInGroup("storage")) {
            return polkit.Result.YES;
    Still doesn't work
    And replace by:
    polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
        if ((action.id == "org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount-system-internal") && subject.isInGroup("storage")) {
            return polkit.Result.YES;

    Hi everybody,
    I had tried:
    loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID
    Active=yes
    State=active
    To mount crypted partition, other authorizations are needed. But actualy, I only just try to mount decrypted partiton (root has "luksopen" the crypted partition to /dev/mapper, and I try to mount /dev/mapper/DECRYPTED partition). The "mount" command tell me only root can do that.
    May be I have to add other autorizations anyway?
    I had change my rule file:
    polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
            if (action.id="org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount-system" && subject.isInGroup("storage")) {
                    return polkit.Result.YES;
    and check by
    journalctl -b -u polkit

    Nov 17 09:21:53 PCFixe polkitd[387]: Collecting garbage unconditionally...
    Nov 17 09:21:53 PCFixe polkitd[387]: Loading rules from directory /etc/polkit-1/rules.d
    Nov 17 09:21:53 PCFixe polkitd[387]: Loading rules from directory /usr/share/polkit-1/rules.d
    Nov 17 09:21:53 PCFixe polkitd[387]: Finished loading, compiling and executing 2 rules
    So all seems ok.
    But:
    $ mount /dev/sda3 ./test/
    mount: seul le superutilisateur peut exécuter cette commande (--> only root can execute this command)
    /dev/sda3 is crypted, so with root I "luksOpen" it on /dev/mapper/DECRYPTED
    cryptsetup luksOpen --allow-discards /dev/sda3 DECRYPTED
    Saisissez la phrase secrète pour /dev/sda3 :
    I try to mount it with my user
    $ mount /dev/mapper/DECRYPTED ./test/
    mount: seul le superutilisateur peut exécuter cette commande (--> only root can execute this command)
    An idea: may be /dev/mapper devices are not considered as "filesystem-mount-system" ??
    Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.
    Best regards.

  • Root Password Doesn't Work on Sudo Commands

    I went through the process of changing the root password in Recovery mode and it appeared everything went as expected. Rebooted the Mac. When I run a command in Terminal using "sudo", I get challenged for the root password, and authentication fails. Are there any reasons that might explain this, or is there something I need to do differently? The laptop is supplied by my work, and I have both an admin and a standard account on it. When I'm prompted for admin authentication, entering the admin username and password works fine. But I need to be able to do things that require sudo permission (like reload the hosts file without having to do a full reboot), and it's just not responding to the password I just reset. Thanks for any help.

    Does your work know you enabled the root password on their hardware? They may consider that a security risk it isn't normal for Mac users to do this and it defeats the point of having sudo installed too.
    Read the manual…
    https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man8/sudo.8.html
    man sudo
    (NOTE: in the default configuration this is the user's password, not the root password).
    You need to be an admin user to use sudo, standard accounts do not have access to it.

  • No root password

    I noticed that I can log on as root via getty without any password!
    The root account was secured via passwd -d
    I'm safe from SSH attacks (no root login AND no blank passwords). but this seems pretty serious nonetheless.
    Does anyone know the proper way to secure the root account? I want to disable the root password completely, so that the only way to log in as root would be via something setuid such as sudo.

    ThePacman wrote:One question: I just found the same solution on the wiki, but why does it say that Arch Linux is not fine-tuned to work with the root account locked? What problems might arise?
    I never tried to lock it. But su requires you to enter a password, sudo is not automatically installed and its default configuration allows neither passwordless root access nor root access with your own password.
    Edit: So if you don't take care you'll lock yourself out, with only a boot cd to restore root access.

  • Root password on solaris FPGA "fast-boot"

    I tried to boot opensolaris on FPGA in maintenance mode using "boot -m milestone=none" but it required root password which isn't mentioned in any documentation I looked at. Does anyone know what the password is or what it might be by default?
    Also, the DV guide mentions that adding programs can be done by mounting the program to the file system. This, however, requires root access to a sparc machine which I don't have. Some other users have tried ftp-ing executables.this would require ftp-ing these executables everytime the system is restarted. Any other solutions or suggestions? I am thinking about mounting a compact flash card to the file system and accessing my executables from there. The problem is I don't know how to mount devices to the file system. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    All,
    please Type sudo root
    Password is ovsroot
    Even i had the same problem.. Finally its not oracle or something, it is "ovsroot ".
    And this password is for solaris 11 express edition virtual machine package..I think this will confuse the original poster, who was asking about the LiveCD USB image, not the VirtualBox appliance image. These are two different things. You and Tony are correct with regard to the VirtualBox appliance image user and root passwords, as documented in the OTN readme:
    http://download.oracle.com/otn/solaris/express/README.txt
    However, the original poster downloaded and booted from the LiveUSB, which operates out of RAM, not the harddrive. It is used for a fresh installation of Solaris 11 Express, as well as for trying out and running the OS without touching the harddrive. As Sadiq mentioned in his post, some commands require the root role, which is in the Solaris 11 Express Getting Started guide:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19963-01/html/820-7799/explore.html
    The previous answers are correct: The password is "solaris" for the LiveCD/LiveUSB environment.
