RV180/RV180W - MAC adress filtering and IP biding

Hello !
First, i'm sorry for my poor english :o)
I'm interested by the router Cisco RV180 or RV180W.
So as to increase security, i would like to set a MAC adress access restriction for all peripherals that would be connected to the router (10 computers, 2 servers, 6 Synology NAS) : only allowed MAC adress should access to the internet and network ressources.
Does the Cisco RV180 or RV180W have an IP to Mac biding feature and a Mac adress restriction feature ?
If yes, how many peripherals/computers can be set ?
For example, only 30 mac/IP adress can be allowed on my actual router and it is not enough.
Best regards
churchillguy

Hi churchillguy
The RV180W Admin guide on page 94 discusses MAC address filtering;
Well since you cannot directly connect 30 MAC hosts directly to the built in 4 port switch, why not perform the restrictions on the managed layer 2 Small Business switch such as a SG300-52.
Apply MAC address filters to the AP side of the RV180W as needed.
But are you much better off loading a series of MAC address entries for allowed devices on the switch, so that the restrictions will work in the LAN switch.
Pretty easy to setup on the Small Business 300 or 500 series switches.
below is a example of the switch management interface where you would add MAC filters.

  • MAC-Adress Filtering vs. Access - Lists

We are using two WLC 4400 Series Controller for our Guest WLAN. They are installed the way Cisco Recommends . One in our LAN and one in the DMZ.
I am looking for a possibility to deny company users the access to this WLAN with their notebooks. The WLAN has direkt internet access and we don't want our notebooks to be compromised...
With MAC-Adress Filterring I can only permit access to a specific Wlan or is there a way to negogiate such a filter to use it for a denial?
Is there a possibility to use access lists for the denial of specific Mac-Adresses to a specific WLAN ?
Anyone an other good Idea how to solve this issue?

Well... MAC-address filter would work, but if you have alot to input, it can be a headache. ACL's I don't think will work, because users will get an ip from the guest network and then how can you know who has what address. Create a username password webauth page. The credentials can be changed each day or week depending.... and give this out to guest users to access the guest network. Now internal user can't access this unless the username password slips out. If you really want to make it tough, use GPO and push out the wireless policy and lock out the feature to add a wireless network.

  • Wireless Mac-Adress Filtering via Radius Bypassed

    Hello
i have two Mac-adress based filtered WLAN configured plus one Guest SSID.
The mac-adress filtering is linked to a radius server faut mac verification
When i enable Fast-SSID change (globally for controller) i can switch from guest ssid to mac-filtered SSID without radius validation of my mac.
If i disable fast-SSId change, i cannot switch between, and radius return reject for my MAC@
the problem is i have some iPhones switching between two SSID --> i have to leav Fast-SSID change activated, if not iPhones can't connect to SSIDs ...
    ( as stated in : https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-21729 )
    My version : 7.2.103.0
Does anybody can confirm this problem ?
    Thanks,

  • How to share internet by wifi using wpa encryption or mac adress filtering ?

Hello, (and sorry for my English)
How can I share internet (from ethernet) to wifi, with a minimum of security : wpa encryption, mac adress filtering or hidden ssid ?
    Thanks,

If I understand your question, Internet Sharing doesn't support WPA, only WEP, which is essentially worthless.

  • MAC Address Filtering and SPI set up

    Hi,
I just purchased a WRT54GS V 6 wireless router.  I updated the firmware to the latest (May 30) and the set up seems to be OK.  Using the security recommendations in the manual as a guide, I implemented them - the turn off SSID, and the others.
IF I try to filter the MAC addresses (accept only those on the list) for my wife's Sony VAIO VGN - S260 laptop, it can see the network but will not connect. When I turn off the MAC filtering, it is fine.  I used the WPA2 personal encryption, and input the passphrase into both router and computer.
My other issue is the firewall Statefull Packet Inspection (SPI).  On the Security set up screen, firewall tab - I have the four radio button settings that I am supposed to (Block WAN request, filter Multicast, Filter NAT, & Filter IDENT), however, I do NOT have the option to turn on the firewall (SPI) above the 4 radio buttons - that setting is totally missing from the set up screen.  Reference Page 28 of the manual.
I would appreciate any help or suggestions, as I could not find any ideas searching the forum.  Thanks for your help

you can try and change a few wireless settings ....in the routers wireless section....go to the advanced wireless settings.....here you can reduce the beacon interval to 50...also reduce the RTS and Fragmentation by 40 each.....

  • Time Capsule Set Up - SSID Broadcast and MAC Address filtering

How does one set up TC for MAC address filtering, and also to disable SSID broadcast? Apple store salesman assured me I could do both, but had no idea how. I can't find anything in the set up. I am used to looking at Linksys routers, so maybe it is buried somewhere.

Selecting only "Timed Access" doesn't really fully activate MAC Address filtering. Even you have that enabled any wireless client can join the network (provided they know the password, if you have any and the SSID, if disabled). You also need to do this:
In the AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Access screen, the MAC address of the TC (defined as "default") is always listed. Select that and press "Edit" and on the next page, under ".... set the default network time limits" select No Access from the drop down list and then that will prevent computers that aren’t on the access control list from accessing the AirPort network. Is this what you wanted?
This is applicable to the new TC (I didn't have a old one, so can't comment) and it's undocumented. It took me hours to figure out. Hope this helps!!!

  • MAC address filters Aplication

I am trying to configure AP 1200 MAC adress filters in allowing a list of MAC addresses, but the list is not being applied. How can I configure the restriction "deny any" in a AP 1200, so I can deny any MAC address but the ones allowed in my list.

The below tips will be useful.

  • Enable mac address filtering vs. Access restriction

What is the difference between enabling MAC address filtering and access restriction on my wireless router? I am curious if one is better than the other. Do they do the same thing?

"MAC address filtering" will permit (or deny) a computer to login to your wireless network, based on it's MAC address.  For example, a person would input the MAC addresses of the three wireless computers they own, and permit only these three computers to access their wireless network.   This setting would therefore prevent computers with other MAC addresses from connecting to your wireless network.  This setting effects only wireless connections.
"Access restriction" is primarily used to restrict or deny Internet access to a computer that is already connected to your network.  For example, you might want to permit your son's game computer to access the Internet only on Saturday and Sunday.  This setting can effect both wired and wireless connections.
Be aware that either of these settings can be circumvented by those who are computer saavy.  For example, a MAC address can be faked.  So an intruder could gain access to your network this way, or your child could bypass the restrictions you placed on him.
If you want to keep intruders from accessing your wireless network, rather than using MAC address filtering, you should use WPA, or preferably WPA2 encryption, and a strong password.

You have to add another email address on one of the two devices that you can use as the "You can be reached for FaceTime at" contact address and then remove/uncheck the Apple ID email address as the contact address on that device. The way you are currently setup is like to trying to call yourself on your on phone - from your own phone.
Using the iPad as the example go to Settings>FaceTime>You can be reached for FaceTime at>Add another email address. Then add a working email address in the next window. Apple will verify the email. Go to the inbox of that email account, read and respond to Apple's email in order to complete the verification process.
Go back to Settings>FaceTime>Uncheck the Apple ID email address and make sure that the new email address is checked/selected (you will see it being verified again) and that new email address will be your contact address for the iPad.

  • Mac Address Filtering Issue with DI-624 router and HP D110 Wireless Printer

Just got the D110 Wireless Printer and cannot connect to the wireless router.
    I have a D-Link DI-624 Air Plus Xtreme G 2.4GHz Wireless Router.
The error message that I'm recieving from the printer is that "Mac address filtering may be enabled on your wireless router. This  can prevent your HP printer from connecting to your wireless network during setup....etc."
The D-Link is setup using WPA-PSK security. If I turn off all security than the wireless printer is able to connect. With WPA-PSK or even WEP enabled I cannot connect the printer to the wireless router. There is no connection to hardwire the printer and the router.
I've logged on to the router's admin and have confirmed several times that Mac filtering is turned off by going to Advanced > Filters > Mac Filters > and choosing Disabled Mac Filters. Where else is this setting? Why is the printer not able to connect?
Further, I check the logs on the router and it shows "Wireless PC Connected" and "Authentication Success" with a note that has the Mac Hardware Address matching the printer's mac hardware address on the Wireless Network Test Report. It would appear that the router is letting the Print in but that the printer is not able to communicate for some reason. It even shows under status > wireless that the printer is connected.
When i spoke to HP, they said to contact the router company and that they could not help. When I called D-Link they said tech support is no longer available for the model. I'm stuck, can anybody help?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Windows XP, tried both the front of the printer as well as connecting via USB and using the software.
After a few hours on the phone with both D-Link and HP, the issue has been resolved.
Apparently eventhough Mac Filtering was disabled (set to Disabled MAC Filters), the Mac address had to be entered into the router to allow it while keeping the setting to Disabled Mac Filters. To me it appeared counter intuitive to enter the Mac address while it's set to Disabled Mac Filters so I did not try that before getting on the phone with HP. Further on this, the problem did not go away right after adding the mac address but rather after restarting the router as the mac address addition did not take effect without a reboot of the device.
HP was much more helpful than D-Link on this one though it would be nice for HP to add to their instructions and Wireless Network Test Report to add the Mac address just in case. I would have tried that step if it was stated that it's okay to add the mac address and keep mac filters disabled.

  • SRW switches and MAC-based filtering

Hello, i looking for some guide how i can setup MAC-based filtering in ACL.
    Please have step-by-step guide?
    Thank you

802.1X authentication and MAC-based address filtering can be administered on SRW switches via their web based GUI.
There is very good documentation on each model...
    example:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9988/index.html
    then select acl....

  • MAC adress restriction is not working

    Hi All
I have 1 AirPort Extreme (4th generation) who is a DHCP server in my local LAN 172.16.1.xxx
Connected to this Extreme, one Airport Epresse (1th) generation
By default, all connection is filtering by MAC Adress.and for my kids, I stop the network during the night.
    All work's fine in WiFi.
But if one PC is connected to the AirPort Express by LAN (Ethernet), the restriction is not working.
I try to add restriction for the AirPort Extrem - by MAC Adresse of course - same issue.
could you help me to fix this error or is it a BUG in the airport.
Thanks in advance for your feedback
    Cheers

But if one PC is connected to the AirPort Express by LAN (Ethernet), the restriction is not working.
Since 2007, Apple's Timed Access feature does what it says that it will do. It only works for wireless clients......not Ethernet connected clients.
You may have missed this notation in the setup screen in Timed Access. See the highlighted box:
If you want to see a feature to include Ethernet clients in Timed Access, I suggest that you contact Apple to let them know.

  • How to Fetch MAC-Adresses across Subnets

    Hi All,
for some reason we have a number of Machines out there where we would like to install a Package via ARD instead of Casper. We have a list of Hostnames from this Machines. Now, the first idea was to ping them and to get the MAC-Adress out of the ARP Cache via arp -a. All together could be used as an Import-File for Remote-Desktop.
But ARP does not work across Subnets.
Now i was wondering - how does for example ARD read the MAC-Adress from a Machine if i do a scan to a specific Network-Range. Could i use this process to fetch the MAC-Addresses? Or could there be another way.
    bye
    joe

    Hi
You could try installing ARD on a client within that range? Poll workstations within that range for relevant information. Save it to the Desktop of that ARD workstation. Transfer it to a memory stick etc. Or if you know the IP address of that workstation you may be able to add it using the network address option from another workstation that's in a different subnet.
