S-Video or Composite video input
I need to connect a camcorder to my iMac but it has no digital output. Only s-video (which I prefer) and composite.
I know there exists converters which can convert this stuff to USB or Firewire but the ones I found are really expensive. $300-$500
I need it to be less than $100.
I looked for tv tuners and they seem to cost a lot less. But can anyone here suggest one that will work well with this ol' iMac?
Hi,
First, if you are using Quicktime or iMovie to import video, you need firewire, USB won't do it.
My own search for such a converter ended with the ADS-Technology ADPYROAVL Pyro A/V Link, D-A Media Converter, $149.95 at http://www.bhphotovideo.com/. Shipping added 6.90 to that.
Having been using it for 2 or 3 weeks now, I'd say I made a pretty good choice, certainly for my main use, which is conversion of old VHS tapes. It can also export video from the computer onto an analog tape.
Hope this helps.

Connections: 3 HDMI; 1 S-Video input; 2 Component Video; 3 Composite Video
Hi,
I just went to the store to get a HDMI-DVI and mini (from my macbook) to DVI to watch my MB on my tv. I only see the desktop background without the icons or any window I have open. What am I doing wrong? Please help Are there any specials steps to see the whole enchilada?
Here are my tv's specs:
Connections: 3 HDMI; 1 S-Video input; 2 Component Video; 3 Composite Video Inputs; 1 RS232 Control; 1 Digital Audio Output; 1 PC Video Input; 1 PC Audio Input
thank you.Connect the MB to its AC adapter. Now close the lid on the MB so it goes to sleep. Now plug in a USB mouse to the MB so it wakes up again. When it wakes up with the lid down, only the TV will be used as the display and the menu bar and everything will be on the TV. Once that happens, you can open the MacBook's lid if you need to use the keyboard. You could also plug in a USB keyboard and leave the lid down as an alternative. If you don't own a USB keyboard or USB mouse, you can wake up the MB with another USB device, like a flash memory stick.

What adapter needed to connect to S-video or composite video on TV
My MacBook Pro has a mini-display port and I can't seem to find an adapter that will allow output to S-video and composite video. I have the adapter that worked with the Powerbook G4 12".
ThanksS-Video is limited to 720 x 480. Unless you have a standard TV (not HD-TV), or older projector, S-Video is not ideal anymore. Plus you end up with an almost unusable external display unless all you are showing is video and stills and slides.
A mini-DisplayPort is adaptable to VGA with this adapter:
http://store.apple.com/us/searchresult?p=MB572Z/A
which can be adapted to S-Video fairly easily with a cable such as this one:
http://www.eforcity.com/pothvgasvrc1.html
A mini-DisplayPort is adaptable to DVI:
http://store.apple.com/us/searchresult?p=MB570Z/A
which can be adapted to component here from:
Buy.com (I never shop here, but that's the specs).
However, the audio will not come out of DisplayPort. For that you need a separate audio cable such as this one:
from StarTech if you have a compatible Toslink speaker system.
Otherwise, you can use a standard RCA minijack cable to hook up to your stereo speaker system.
Note the only store links I shop from are Apple from above. I just found these cables on Google, and have no idea how good any of the other stores are. -
[T420] VGA to S-video or composite video
I want to connect a T420 to an older TV. Can I use this VGA to s-video/composite adapter? The website says:
"Your video card MUST be able to support s-Video or Composite out through it's VGA port. This is known as a TV out function. If you don't know if your video card can do this, then call the card manufacturer and ask them "Does my video card support S-Video or Composite Video out through its VGA port?""
So, does the video card in the T420 (Intel HD 3000) support S-Video or Composite Video out (more importantly composite video) through its VGA port?
W520 i7-2720QM | 32 GB RAM 1333 MHz | FHD 1920x1080 | Quadro 1000M | Windows 7 & Ubuntu 14.04
Crucial M500 480GB mSATA + 2 x 1 TB Hitachi Travelstar 7200 rpm | BIOS 1.38Hi biznatch!
The T420 does not support s-Video or Composite out through it's VGA port. You need an active VGA converter box.
Hope this helps!

No S-Video and composite video cable adapters from Apple?
Hello.
Is it me or does Apple's http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/mac_accessories/cables/cable_choo ser not carry any video cable adapters that go to S-Video and composite inputs (an old Panasonic projector TV from Y2K) from MacBook Pros (2008 and 2012 models)? This is just for watching fullscreen videos.
Thank you in advance.Courcoul wrote:
Might want to canvass Mom & Pop computer stores in the area, that usually don't have such a furious inventory turnover rate as the big chains, and maybe you'll find what you need. Or look in eBay, Amazon, etc. Note that you don't NEED an Apple-labeled adapter, just one that will plug in whatever ports you have left and gives the required output.
OK and thanks. I tried to find on big retailer stores online like Best Buy, Fry's Electronics, Office Max, Radio Shack, etc. but had no luck. Or maybe I am not searching correctly (DVI S-Video and DVI composite keywords as two examples)? I did find Apple's on Amazon.com based on the model number from someone on comp.sys.mac.system newsgroup: http://www.amazon.com/APPLE-M9267G-DVI-Video-Adapter/dp/B0000ACOBL/ ... -

Connecting Macbook Pro to TV via S-Video or Composite video
Hi,
I own a Macbook Pro mid 2010 model, and I was wanting to connect it to my somewhat old TV. The TV itself has a input for S-video and the regular RCA composite inputs, no HDMI, VGA, or DVI. I purchased a miniDisplay Port to DVI adapter and a DVI to Video Adapter. I tried to get it to work but to my dismay it didn't because the number of pins between the 2 adapters were different (something about DVI-I and DVI-D). But although I am not too happy about wasting my money I still want to connect my macbook to my TV. Is there anyway I can get that to happen? I also have to miniDisplay port to VGA adapter if that makes a difference.
Thanks,
TeagueThis should do it:

VGA to S-video or composite video adapter
I need some way to get the video output of my computer to my T.V. The computer has no S-video or anything other outputs for video besides the VGA one. And I don't have a T.V. with VGA input. Has anyone ever seen an adapter for something like this? I know I can get a splitter for the VGA so I can keep my monitor plugged in at the same time, but I need something to convert the VGA for the T.V.
Welcome, jacob1982!
Could you please post which TV model or which inputs
the TV does have? I ask this because if
you have HDMI input on the TV then you just need a
cable and a converter
adapter. You can split VGA output by
using this VGA
Splitter. I looked on bestbuy.com for a VGA to S-Video adapter I had once
purchased but it appears we may not have them anymore? You can also try going
into your local store for assistance (hint: these adapters may be found in the
TV area).

S-video and composite-video, maybe even SCART, in due course
According to Reg Hardware, it's a matter of time.

I for one, hope they are right.If there's money out there for a converter (and there is!) someone will sell one

Compnent Video to Composite RCA
Hello,
Due to downsizing I need to use an old TV for my second Apple TV. Does anyone have an idea for a cheap way to go about this. It needs to be converted into a regular yellow RCA video cable. I have seen a few that are $100's of dollars. Is there another cheap way to do this? Can I go with a component video to S video adapter to an S video to composite video? This is a $15 fix but I am not sure if it will work.
Thank you for your help.
BWComponent video can be analogue or digital.
AppleTV can output an analogue YPbPr signal, which is why you sometimes see people posting 'I've connected to my composite input and it's not full colour' - they've connected one of the red, green or blue RCA sockets in error to a composite RCA input, and only one of the luma, 'blue' or 'red' signals is input to the composite socket.
I don't think fiddling with the HDMI output settings affects component changing from YPbPr to digital YCbCr, but I've not tried in practice.
Either way decent analogue component to S-video/composite converters are expensive.
There was a convoluted method posted ages ago to trick AppleTv into outputting composite on one of the sockets - Google might help.

Composite Video on eMac problem
At my school I have a number of eMacs and I want to connect a few of them up to TV monitors. In the past I have been able to use the mini-vga to video adapter and connect it to the video input and have things work just fine. Recently, however, when I do that I do not get the mirrored screen. I get bands of light flickering across the screen.
This setup works fine for a iBook, but not for the eMac.
Any suggestions?Is this also true on the 1.07 GHz iBook G4 (Early 2004)?
No
The iBook G4 has a mini-VGA output. To get S-Video or composite video simply use the Apple Video Adapter (M9109G/A). -
S-Video/Composite Video via VGA with 3rd Party Adapter
As mentioned elsewhere in these discussions, the Mini-DisplayPort on the Aluminum MacBook is different from the eartlier models. The Mini-DP adapters from Apple don't support S-Video or Composite Video, even in combination.
I ordered and just received my Grandtec PC to Video EZ adapter. It is a bit klugey, requiring a USB connect for power but it supports Apple Mini-DP to VGA output and generates both S-Video and Composite (yellow plug) video.
The good news is that it WORKS. A bit pricey - Apple VGA adapter was $29 and the PC to Video from Dobbs Electric was $39.99 + shipping. But, the alternative was unacceptable. It may not be HD but at least I can do my job in a variety of sites where most of the video devices are older.Dear Popster41,
I found myself in the same situation you were when you posted this. Could you tell me where you found the converter you mentioned?
I appreciate your help,

Please help! Not able to set Video input Port(S-Video or Composite)on Linux
Hi
I am using JMF2.1.1e(Linux performance pack) for video capturing on Linux OS. I want to set video input port(S-Video or composite) through my application. I am using the following code:
if ( dataSource != null )
arrControls = dataSource.getControls ();
if ( arrControls != null )
nCount = arrControls.length;
System.out.println("No. of Controls: " + nCount);
for ( i = 0; i < nCount; i++ )
if ( arrControls[i] == null )
continue;
if ( !(arrControls[i] instanceof Control) )
continue;
componentControl = ((Control)arrControls).getControlComponent ();
System.out.println("ComponentControl : " + componentControl);
if ( componentControl == null )
continue;
But, i am getting No. of Controls: 0 (Zero). So i am not able to get any control component also. Rest of the application is working fine. Please help me solving this problem.
Thanks in advance.To go a stage further.
Google run a Jabber server for their service.
Jabber apps (those that can) use a Protocol called Jingle to make the A/V connections.
Google's version is not even that compatible with other Jabber apps. (See Here)
The Plug-in in the Google Install (Or the Standalone Web Browser Plug-in allow Browsers to access the GoogleTalk A/V side as does the Standalone PC app called GoogleTalk as well.
iChat uses a process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to connect to other iChat Users or to the AIM for PC app.
However this also works in any iChat to iChat Connection no matter if the Buddy List is an AIM Login based one, Jabber (including GoogleTalk) or A LAN based Bonjour Chat.
In you care this is not going to work.
Getting the Standalone (Intel only) Browser Plug-in and using the Chat option in the Google Mail Web page is probably the easiest option.

How do I make use of the Composite Video input jack on my HP pavilion Elite m9150f computer?
I have a Pavilion Elite m9150f computer that has front panel jacks labeled "Composite Video Input,and Audio left and Audio right input" They are all RCA type.None of the PDF type manual files mention these jacks.I would like to make use of them to input video from either my old VCR that has the same output jacks and or a DVD player that is also equipped with the same set of output jacks.Finaly, I would like to know what programs should I use to view the video that I connect to these input jacks? Thanks for any and all ideas.
If your m9150f still has Cyberlink DVD Suite Deluxe and the Hauppauge TV tuner installed, then you can use Cyberlink PowerDirector v6 to capture home videos from a VCR as MPEG2 movie clips (.mpg). The files can then be played using Windows Media Player or burned to disc using Windows DVD Maker. You can also edit the movie clips with PowerDirector or other video-editing software. MPEG2 video is not ideal for editing: there will be some loss of picture quality when the video is re-encoded. To minimize that, make your edited videos short and do not reduce the bit rate. Note: The jack on the back of the m9150f is Video Composite-01, the one on the front is -02. Be sure to select the right capture source in PowerDirector's Capture / Device Setup / Video Setup tab. I can't think of any good reason to use Composite jacks for DVD input as long as your m9150f has a functioning DVD drive.

HT3413 How can I get composite video out of the 13" early/mid 2009 MacBook?
OK, the Mini-DVI - DVI Adapter "works with" the 13-inch, Early and Mid 2009 MacBooks.
But can it combine with a DVI to S-video and composite adapter so I can play video from my MacBook (one of the above) to my TV (composite input)?
It is stated in many places that the Mini-DVI to S-video and composite adapter doesn't "work with" these models, and I've proven that's the case.
But I can't find anywhere that explains why, or says more than "works with," or just tells me how I could get any external video from my MacBook other than VGA which is useless to me as far as I can tell.
Thanks for any help!Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
4. Press COMMAND-E.
5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
/usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
