Safari 1.2 and Mac OS 1.4

I am writing a web (JSP2/Tomcat) application for a group that uses Safari 1.2. I have been using Windows IE to debug it and that has proved frustrating insofar as there are quite a lot of incompatibilities. (If you load these Apple pages in IE, you will appreciate that it goes the other way too!)
I am wondering, if I get a Mac Mini with OS-X 10.4 (Tiger) which seems to come with Safari 2.0, can I install 1.2 on it for testing purposes? Can both be installed simultaneously?
Thanks.

Welcome to Apple's user-to-user discussion forums.
I have seen one user who said he had Safari 1.2 running under OS X 10.4.x and one who said he could not get Safari 1.2 installed, so I don't know if the earlier version can be installed or not. Even if you do get Safari 1.2 installed, it would be using the same underlying webcore technology of OS X 10.4.5 as Safari 2.0.3 rather than the webcore version found in OS X 10.3.x, so results may not be what you want or expect.
Safari is the least forgiving of browsers when it comes to rendering non-standard, bad, or sloppy code, so the first thing to do is to write standards-compliant code. You can check your code using the W3C Validator and the W3C CSS Validator.
IE/Mac has been completely abandoned by Microsoft and is not even available for download anymore. It's last update was in June, 2003. It is way behind the times and, in my opinion, is the worst browser available for OS X. Other excellent OS X browsers include Firefox, Camino, Opera, OmniWeb, and iCab.

  • Using LastPass with Safari 6.0 and Mac OS X 10.7

I am considering using LastPass with Safari 6.0 and Mac OS X10.7.  Preliminary due dilligence suggests various problems with loading and running the plugin with Safari 6.0 and Mac OS X which appear to be unresolved.  I will greatly appreciate any user experience with LastPass on the current Mac OS and Safari platforms, as well as any suggestions (i.e., "tips")  for installing and using the plugin (or another more compatible plugin).  Thanks for your consideration.

Solution was to stop rapport, quit and restart Safari, turn rapport back on, then quit and restart Safari, all now working.

  • My Safari, Address Book and Mac Mail have stopped working.

Recently my Safari, Address book and Mac Mail have become unstable, I cannot edit or copy anything from my Address book, most of the time it'll stop responding before I can even view an address. My Safari keeps freezing and then crashing and I have to force quit, sometimes several times before it'll close. The Mac Mail won't do anything, it tries to download mail and then will sit there doing nothing, again sometimes I have to force quit several times before it'll actually quit.
I have run the extended hardware test and all is fine, I have reinstalled my OS and then restored my info from a backup and still it doesn't work. Can anyone shed any light on this?

    Hi jen_bob,
My iMac is a trooper, so far this is the first time its played up - I have I pushed it too far?
I think you've just installed the wrong version of Safari, that's all. Safari 3.x is supposed to be for OS X 10.4 or 10.5 - according to your tag line you are using 10.3.9.
Assuming you are using 10.3.9, then the Safari install will have updated a few system frameworks that are used by other applications (such as Mail). In that case, the 'easiest' way to get things working again is to do an 'Archive & Install' and choose to preserve users and network settings.

  • Safari 3.1. and Mac OSX 10.5.3

    Hi everybody,
I accidentaly dumped Safari from my system because I never used it and I didn't like it very much. anyway, I am using Opera but to set Opera as my default Browser I need Safari to change this setting. So I downloaded the new 3.1. Safari version but wasn't able to install it. I got the message that I need Mac OSX 10.2. or newer (wich I already have). So I tried to install the Tiger version as well (out of curiosity) but it didn't work either. Afterwards I was browsing through the threads in this forum and tried all the other suggestions I found, like:
Installing the Safari 2.1. version from the install disk that came with my PBP. I was able to install it but when I tried to launch it I got the message that I cannot use this safari version with my Mac OSX version. And Software Update doesn't mention any Updates for Safari although an older version is installed.
After that I downloaded Pacifist, repaired my permissions with disk utillity, re-downloaded the Safari 3.1 package and tried to install it via Pacifist. The .pkg file was a zero-byte file and whe I marked every file in the package, and clicked on the install button it seemed to work. I was asked for my admin password and wether I want to replace all the files connected to safari. I said yes (like mentioned in another thread in this forum). I quit Pacifist, logged out and in again but Safari is still missing. If I search for safari using spotlight, the only thing that shows up is the .dmg file.
Does anyone have further suggestions??? I'd really appreciate it.
I am really annoyed about all that and I don't understand how Apple can release a new version of their browser wich is incompatible with their new MAC OSX version...

    Try this:
Go to /Library/Receipts and look for an item named Safari311Upd.pkg or something similar, and Trash it (don't empty the Trash yet).
Decompress the Safari 311.dmg file by double-clicking on it. When it's done, open the mounted disk image (if it doesn't open automatically) and drag the pkg file to your Desktop. When it's done copying, close the mounted disk image.
Launch Pacifist and open that package that's on your desktop. Click once on the top package icon in the Pacifist window and then choose Install from the menu, and be sure to replace all items related to Safari that it may find. When it's done, try launching Safari and post back with what happens. If everything is fine again, then you can Empty your Trash.
As for Apple releasing a version of Safari that's not compatible with 10.5.3, that's not the case at all. It is entirely compatible; the fact that the OS is claiming something that doesn't make sense to you is not an indication that it doesn't work or isn't compatible.

  • When i updated my computer, my safari on applications wont open and says "safari quit unexpectedly" and wont open but when i open it on the application key on the mac, safari will open. how do i get safari back on my dock where it will open.

When i updated my computer, my safari on applications wont open and says "safari quit unexpectedly" and wont open but when i open it on the application key on the mac, safari will open. how do i get safari back on my dock where it will open. when i click reopen it wont. but i know safari works because thats what im using right now. it just wont open when i click the one i had loaded on my dock and in applications. please help!
    Stephanie

Drag the Safari icon straight up and off the Dock so it goes, "poof" ...
Now click and hold the Safari app in the Applications folder and drag that to the Dock.
See if you can open a webpage in Safari.

  • Safari 3.2.1 and Mac OS 10.4.11

I have reached the point where Safari (current version for Tiger) on Mac's running 10.4.11 (with all current updates) is totally unusable. It simply quits responding to calls to load web sites. I cannot even quit Safari using the Safari Quit Safari menu item. I have to use force quit (it shows Safari as NON RESPONDING.. I do not get a application quit unexpectaly, report to Apple, etc. screen.
This happens on four totally different machines in totally different environments. They all work just fine with Firefox on the same web sites. It is not web site specitic, or # of sites visited, it is totally random and it will occur EVERY time I use Safari on all 4 machines. One is an eMac, another an original iMac, another is a Ti power book and the 4 th is a G4 cube.
I have trolled all the sites for safari problems on 10.4.11 and tried some of the things indicated. None work. Safari on my 5 Mac's with 10.5.6 all work fine. But that is a different version.
Right now I am an unhappy Safari user on Tiger and a very happy Firefox user on Tiger.
    Any ideas.
Yes I have tried downloading and installing the latest version from the web site on all 4 machines. I was using the prior version until it would no longer allow checking e-mail with mobile me login. Upgrading to the new version fixed that. But you have to start Safari from scratch and go to me.com first thing because if you try and surf around for a while Safari dies and you have to force quit and restart.

    Hello,
"I have trolled all the sites for safari problems on 10.4.11 and tried some of the things indicated"
Before we make suggestions, what exactly have you tried so far?

    There's another way.
Right or control click the + then click Remove Item.
    Just remembered that keyboard shortcut!

I'm running Safari 6.0.5 - Mac OS 10.8.4 -- when I load my gmail the block around the DELETE and MOVE tabs are not usable - press buttons but nothing happens. ???
I can see the block (flashes) and the buttons are no longer usable.
I have Empted Cache but doesn't seem to help.

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.

  • How to play Netflix on my Imac G5, it has Safari and Firefox 3, and over 1gb Ram and Mac OS X 10.4.11

How to play Netflix on my Imac G5, it has Safari and Firefox 3, and over 1gb Ram and Mac OS X 10.4.11

You referenced that you had a iMac G5 model?
G5's are PowerPC CPUs and not Intel CPUs.
The Microsoft Silverlight software works with Intel chip Macs only.
And, if I am not mistaken, the software requires OS X 10.5.8 Leopard or greater to install.
So, you need both an Intel Mac with, at least, OS X 10.5.8 as minimum requirements.
Netflix will still not work on your Mac.
    FYI.

    Hi Anne,
Did you do this through one of the Office app updates, or did you download it directly from the Microsoft website?
Whichever way you tried it, I would try it the opposite way this time, although simply repeating what you did before may also work.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab.
If there are any extensions installed, turn that OFF, then quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Reader updates on Mac state it must have internet connection, but my Safari is up and running fine. What to do?

I have Reader 9.5.5 on Mac OS 10.10.2 and frequently get Adobe update notifications in my dock, accompanied by a warning panel that states an internet connection is necessary, but I have my Safari browser up and running fine. So I can never get the updater beyond this point. This happens periodically and I have written Adobe and never received an answer. Adobe should make the updates a seamless, nearly automatic file, but instead they are still using antiquated software which is confusing (unless you are an IT person) and difficult to troubleshoot. Adobe could do much better.

Your Reader version 9.5.5 is very old and no longer supported.
I suggest that you uninstall it, then install the latest version using the offline installer from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
