Safari 3.1.1 update has crippled my machine

Not only does Safari 'go to sleep' while it's trying to lad web pages, I can no longer send email attachments with any of the email clients I have. I have another machine on the same router that I did not upgrade (thank goodness) and it still works fine.
I reverted back to Safari 3.0.4 by extracting it from the 10.4.11 upgrade- no improvement. Then I completely re-installed the 10.4.11 upgrade- still no luck.
Since I am apparently looking at a backup restore here to use this machine in any meaningful way again, can anyone give me a COMPLETE list of every single file the Safari 3.1.1 upgrade might have changed or replaced?
Guess I'm on my own here since there seems to be a big river in Egypt over the fact that the Safari 3.1.1 upgrade is seriously flawed.
Thanks.

Hi
while I doubt that the 3.1.1 update is flawed of itself, here's how to get a list of any apple updates files....
First open the Terminal & type
lsbom -p f add a space after the 'f'
( don't press enter yet )
next, in the Finder navigate to HD/Library/Receipts/ & choose the update or install package name you need to find out about.
Ctrl-Click on the package icon & choose 'show package contents'
open the 'contents ' folder & click/drag the 'archive.bom' file to the terminal window ( after you release it, the full file path should be pasted after 'lsbom'
now press Enter in Terminal & you'll get a full list of every file contained in the update/installer.
Lsbom doesn't alter anything, it just outputs a (sometimes very long ) list
note that the '-p f' restricts the list to show only filenames/paths - you can remove it if you want other info - see the manual page for lsbom for how to get specific info.
worth mentioning that some installers contain scripts which make changes to permissions etc or actually modify files directly, in addition to simply replacing those you'll find listed via lsbom.
the actual install package also contains an archive.bom file which can be treated as above - IF you do go the route of manually replacing files, you may also find unPkg and/or Pacifist useful....
bear in mind that an archive/install then relevant updates might be faster/easier for you - or look a little more into what add-ons you{i] might have installed that are incompatible with safari 3.1.1

  • 3.1.3 update has crippled my legally unlocked iPhone.

I bought 3 Apple unlocked iPhones in Australia.
We have been using them on T-Mobile.
The Apple 3.1.3 iPhone update has disabled all internet connectivity.
    Can anyone please help?

First of all double check that you have got the right internet settings by going to settings-general-network-cellular data network, if you have ring your carrier to determine the fault is not from their end. if that doesnt work then my advice is to book a genius appontment at your nearest apple store. if your iphone was unlocked officially the new iphone the offer you will be officially unlocked as well (they take your details and authorise your phone to be unlocked) so when next you connect your iphone to your pc you will get that message your iphone has successfully been unlocked.

  • Safari 4.0.3 update has problems, AVOID it

I was browsing Lotus Talk (www.LotusTalk.com) specifically this thread of mine:
    http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f100/hod-infineon-7-4-09-ouch-75545/index2.html
When I used my Logitech scroll wheel I got the spinning beach ball after every scroll -- oddly you have to wait about 1 minute with the site open before the behavior happens. Once it happens it affects EVERY Safari window I have open, goes into "slow motion" typing text, scrolling, everything becomes super slow with frequent BeachBalls. Wasn't behaving like this under Safari 4.0.2.
Anyway, you folks might want avoid this update. I hope a 4.0.4 comes out soon as this problem has render Safari useless on my MacPro.
    Rob.

    Barry,
So you've made an assumption my Logitech wheel is at fault -- sounds like you've made some assumptions without any evidence. Have you actually gone to the link I listed and waited a minute or two (make sure the entire page loads and that you are on page 2 of the thread)??
It's pretty simple: Safari 4.0.2 works fine with the exact same link, same hardware, Safari 4.0.3 does NOT work on the same link and exact same hardware. Seems to me that it's clearly a Safari problem. Hence my post of caution.
    To replicate:
    1. Goto link I listed
    2. Wait for page to load and make sure you're on page 2 of thread
    3. Wait 1-2 minutes
    4. Use mouse clicks to scroll or scroll wheel or whatever method you like to scroll (mouse type is irrelevant).
This produces very slow scrolling and/or beachball. Once this happens open up a separate Safari window and goto this forum (Apple Discussoins and create a new post and start typing, typing is VERY VERY VERY slow.
The problem seems to only surface at the specific link I presented in my original post, other sites seem to work fine.
And again, 4.0.2 doesn't have the problem 4.0.3 does.

  • Safari 5.1.4 update has serious Javascript problem.

I cannot properly access most sites using javascript.  This has affected Safari, Chrome, Firefox.  How do I revert to previous version?

Are you able to log in to any of the sites if you use a different user agent? (Perhaps one of the mobile safari user agents?)
To get access to the User agents via the Develop Menu, go into your Safari advanced preferences and select "Show develop menu in menu bar":

  • Safari 7.1.2 update has installed 3 times

As above but still says I have the update to download. Im still using OS X Mavericks.

Are you syncing to iCloud? If yes, log into your iCloud account on your computer and see if the contact info is still complete. If it is, switch off contact synching on the phone in Settings/iCloud and let the contacts get deleted on the phone. Set up one contact on the phone again after that and switch on the syncing for contacts in iCloud again. iCloud should start downloading the contact info to your phone again.

  • KB2919355 has crippled my machine- boot loop to repair mode

Running Server 2012R2, installed KB2919355 manually using DISM as part of a series of manual updates recommended by following a rabbit hole beginning
here to address a problem I was having with gdi32.dll.  Upon rebooting after installing this package (2919355), I entered a loop into Repair Mode.  Further research found
this hotfix, which seems to be exactly my problem (my system boots from a SAS RAID array using an LSI1068E controller).  I have tried diligently to follow the instructions, however I cannot get
far enough along in order to actually install the hotfix.  Here's the main problem:
Using repair mode, I attempt to modify the BCD to limit memory to 4GB, but the change does not seem to persist after rebooting.  I have tried the same procedure from the command line after booting from the installation DVD, but I seem to be restricted
to a greatly reduced set of executables (do I not have admin privileges when using the installation media?), so things like bcdedit just throw an "unrecognized command" error.  I'm tempted to just pull RAM sticks to get below 4GB, but that's
    a lot of tedious labor.
    Noteworthy (I hope) facts:
    1. chkdisk gives no errors.
    2. sfc /scannow yields "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot...", so it aborts without giving me any info.
    3. Bitlocker was not being used.
    4. Attempting the "last known state" restore simply returns to repair mode after reboot.
I am really in trouble, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I have explored this already.  Unfortunately, I require a disk large enough to hold the image file (.wim) from my system drive before I can inject the repair package.  I tried creating an image the other night, and it ran for several hours
before telling me my target drive was full.  I am constrained by the following problems:
    1. The only drives I have available that are large enough are externally connected to an HBA requiring special drivers to be loaded, which I can't do in WinRE/WinPE, which are the only modes I can use at this point.
    2. The aforementioned drives are 4k native drives formatted in ReFS, which I understand is not supported by WinRE & WinPE (correct me if I'm wrong).
I am on the verge of performing a clean install at this point.  If I were billing for my hours spent on this crap, I'd be in a new tax bracket this year.
The real question is: why is KB2919355 still available for install even with the issues that have been known for over a year?  I only installed it because it was pointed to as a fix for a different problem.  The cross-linking and updating of hotfixes
and patches is a minefield that reflects a very poor culture of quality.  It's a good thing MS doesn't make pharmaceuticals or medical devices.

Has anyone else been having trouble with safari ever since the update? I have restarted several times, it still doesn't work.

    Greetings Blueleoapple,
After reading your post, it sounds like you are experiencing an error with Safari. You may want to consider resetting your device, which is different from restarting. This article provides detailed instructions for Restarting, and Reseting:
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    How to restart
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.
    How to reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

  • 10.4.5 update has trashed Safari

Since running the update, Safari has become unstable.
I have had a zillion unexpected quits today and it all started when I ran the updater. This always happens when attempting to play flash video content within an html page (such as in the cnet.com page I was just at) but it has happened in other random ways too.
Hare's an extract from the last crash report:
    Date/Time: 2006-02-16 00:21:39.991 +0000

I am not using any unusual configurations and I have repared permissions. Next I will see if flash needs updating. Does anybody have any advice or is anybody in Apple listening???
Please don't just tell me not to use System Update in the future. I am naiive enough to belive that if Apple put it in the OS and it says Update Now then it should be okay to do that and I like to assume that software has been properly tested before it is inflicted on us. At least that is what I would do if I ran a computer mutinational.
Like I said, call me naiive...

I think I have cracked it. And it kind of involves eating Humble Pie.
The short answer is that Safari Enhancer had set Safari to report to websites as Internet Explorer 6 for Windows - and as soon as I set that back to Safari my problems ceased.
I really thought I had set everything back to default before deciding it was a Safari problem but evidently I had not. I suggest anybody having this problem check whether they have anything similar.
The longer story is that I realised from the crash report that flash content was always associated with the crashes. I thought maybe I should update flash but when I went to the macromdia site all I could see was Windows software, like it thought I was running a Windows machine... and then it clicked.
I have no idea if or why I set Safari to report as IE (maybe to get round some badly coded sites?) or whether the update did this to Safari Enhancer itself... or possibly why the update has rendered this feature of Safari Enhancer a liability. All I know is that all is well with my world and I am suitably chastened.
If, on the other hand, you don't have anything like Safari Enhancer installed in the first place you may still be stuffed. Perhaps you need to download Safari Enhancer to sort this out...

  • Heads-Up: Safari 4.0.5 update cripples Disk Utility

    Hi guys,
Just a heads-up. If you're planning to install the Safari 4.0.5 update and also maintain a separate OSX partition on the same HDD (backup, maintenance partition, etc), you might consider holding off for now. I installed the update, everything went well as far as Safari was concerned, but an apparent side effect is that now I can't check and repair permissions on my other OSX partition - the one I use to repair disks and permissions; the buttons for checking and repairing permissions are now greyed out. When I highlight the drive I'm booted into, everything's normal, though. Still doing research about this...

    HI,
    Code Type: X86-64 (Native)
Try running Safari in 32-bit mode.
Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. *Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*

  • How to stop an error message that pops up every time I open Safari. It reads...Safari 5.1 (v6534.50) has not been tested with the plugin PithHelmet .As a precaution, it has not been loaded. Please contact the plugin developer.

How do I stop this error message from popping up every time I start up Safari ?
    Error message reads...
Safari 5.1 (v6534.50) has not been tested with the plugin Pithhelmet 3.0b6 (v 3006)
As a precaution, it has not been loaded. Please contact the plugin developer.
I have removed every trace of Pithhelmet, (via spotlight)
Trashed the preferences for Safari, restarted computer to no avail.
    It just  keeps keepin on.
    Thanks

In the past I was able to bypass the message by editing the Info.plist file and updating the MaxBundleVersion variable, but not so this time around. As of today the developer seems to indicate there's no immediate fix becuase of how Safari 5.1 handles multiprocess page rendering. Probably best to stay tuned to Mike's website for now.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari 6.0.5 update loses Favicons!

I just updated to Safari 6.0.5. I'm running OS X Lion 10.7.5 on a Macbook Pro. When I RESET Safari, 95% of the Favicons in my Bookmarks Menu are gone.
Just so we're clear --  in Safari Preferences/General I've designated "Remove History Items" to be done Manually.
On the Reset Safari window/menu, I HAVE NOT checked Clear History or Remove all webpage preview images.
I did not have this problem with the previous version of Safari.
Some users on some older threads suggested replacing the User Library/Safari/WebIcons.db file with an older version from a back-up (prior to the Safari 6.0.5 update). I tried that and it didn't work.
Some users actually inform us that if we simply click on the bookmark and go to the site, the favicon will reload. Are they kidding? I'm not using these favicons for decoration. I use them so I can quickly scan through a list of bookmarks and find the site and bookmark I'm searching for. That's a lot easier to do with the Favicons/WebIcons intact and visible, versus a long vertical row of generic blue balls (no pun intended).
Does anyone have a fix for this?
If anyone from Apple reads this, PLEASE fix this! Had I known this was going to happen, I would have stayed with version 6.0.4!

    Hi Carolyn,
I haven't had any problems with Safari crashing or performing poorly. Safari has always run very well for me. My only problem is this one with the web page icons. I understand your suggestion per trashing the existing Webpageicons.db file (versus replacing it with an archived backup).
When you say that it "...may take several days for the webpage icons to re-populate...", do you mean that the icons will re-populate automatically?... or rather that they'll repopulate as I visit the individual websites. I ask because I have hundreds of bookmarks and I don't want to have to visit each site to reestablish its web page icon in my bookmarks. I went through this once before on a Safari update and literally spent hours visiting site after site to reestablish the webpage icons. Can you please clarify?
    Thanks for your help!

  • I can't get on safari due to a update i installed about 6 months ago

safari crashes due to update i intallled 6 months ago.  how do i resolve this

    Debra...
Most likely due to a third party Safari add on. Try the troubleshooting help here >  Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
If you can't resolve the problem post a crash report so we can find out why Safari's crashing.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash  information.
Copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.
