Safari and Firefox won't open

I use Windows XP via Bootcamp on my iMac. I decided to do a disc defragment on the Windows hard drive because I thought it might boost the speed/efficiency. Since doing that, neither of my browsers (Safari & Firefox) will work in the Mac OS (Tiger). However, Explorer still works in Windows XP. The browsers in Tiger seem like they're opening, I get an icon in the dock with a triangle below, but the browser window will not load. I've tried repairing disc permissions. That didn't solve the problem. I think I may have to reinstall the OS, but that means having to purchase either Tiger or Leopard since the new iMacs don't come with the OS disc.
Advice would be appreciated.

When you create a NEW admin user account, you are not changing anything about your current user account. Mac OS X is Unix-based, so it is a multi-user system. You can create as many user accounts as you want (within reason). This is useful if more than one person uses the same Mac; each user can have his or her own settings and a private user folder to store personal files. They just log into their account when they are using the Mac.
Having a "test user" account is also a good way to trouble-shoot because that user will have fresh set of preference setting files. If the problem is in the normally used account, the overall system is probably OK.
To create a new account, in System Preferences Accounts pane, click on the lock icon (if it is locked ) and authenticate. Then click on the plus sign below the sidebar.
My computer is an Intel G5 iMac, not a Power PC.
FYI - A G5 is PowerPC. I know what you are saying, but an Intel Mac is by definition not a "G5."
I have purchased 2 G5 iMacs within the last 2 years. Neither has come with an installation disc.
If it's new or a refurb from the Apple Store, it better have come with a Mac OS X installation disc inside the box. If it's used, then it's up to the previous owner to include the disc.

  • Safari and Firefox won't open served ASP pages - HELP!

Both Safari and Firefox will not open *.asp web pages automatically. I mean, I know ASP is a Microsoft product, but REALLY. This is ridiculous! ASP is very common on the web. Mac should automatically handle these pages just like any other HTML type of page. But until Apple comes to its senses to make life a little easier for those of us who chose to buy their product and use it in the real world, can somebody please tell me how to configure my Mac to open ASPs automatically? Right now both Safari and Firefox want to download the pages instead of just opening them. And then it asks me what application I want to use to open it. Duh! Obviously I want to open it in Firefox or Safari so I can view the darn thing! Please - I don't need any explanation of what ASP is. I know what it is. Please just tell me how to get my Mac to display the served pages. Thank you!!!!

This is not a standard problem with Safari/Firefox on the Mac that I can see. For example, when I go to http://www.boursedata.com.au/solutions/default.asp it loads the page normally (note: I have a historical association to that company... I have used it because I know it uses asp!).
What does it do for you?

  • Safari and itunes won't open

I was using my mac 3 days ago and everything was fine, then comcast had a internet problem and I lost service for 3 days now I have internet but safari and itunes won't open the icon bounces once and then nothing. I have removed them from the dock, and removed them from the app folder, I also removed the plist and cache files from the home directory. Using firefox I tried to download new copies of them both and nothing new appears on my desktop. I have run the hardware test utility on my osx discs and everthing checks out ok. I am so frustrated, this is the first real problem with my mac since I got it 2.5 years ago. thanks in advance

ok here is an update, I repaired permissions in disk utility with my boot disk, then verified the volume and the volume had errors. I tried to repair the volume and disk utility said I had sibling errors and could not repair. I had an appointment with the genius bar and they determined that with the unrepairable errors on the drive an erase and install was necessary, after coming to grips with this reality I decided to backup everything and do the reformat and upgrade to leopard. I can honestly say that the genius bar person was very courteous and professional. They allowed me to stay at the bar while backing up my files onto my lacie external drive and then installed a new copy of leopard from their lacie drive (after I paid for my copy of leopard) which took 20 minutes instead of 2 hours. I am frustrated that I had to do this whole process and the genius bar employee could not tell me why it happened but the system is working great and I am enjoying the new operating system.

mac book pro with Mavericks 10.9.5

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Safari and Firefox do not open search engines

I have an IMac 8.1, with OS 10.5.8.  Recently, our internet browser programs (safari and firefox) will not open any search engine (google, bing or yahoo).  However, I am able to navigate to web-sites that I manually type in (e.g., www.cnn.com). Does anyone know what the cause, and fix, to this issue?  Also, this behavior did coincide with a recent update to our Intego Antivirus software, but I think this is unrelated.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks,

Also, this behavior did coincide with a recent update to our Intego Antivirus software, but I think this is unrelated
Maybe not. Most, if not almost all, anti-virus software interferes with OS X and is not required.
    Try installing Glims:
If you want to fix your Google search to a specific Google location, I recommend that you download and install the free plug-in Glims:
    http://www.machangout.com/
which not only does that but much more equally useful stuff! Such as enabling Safari to run full-screen, and more.)
(It adds items to Safari Preferences).
Not only does it already list a number of search engines and regions, but you can also add any other search engine not already listed in Glims by using the method described here:
    http://www.machangout.com/tutorials/addsearchengine
Just enter the name you give the search engine in the name field, and the URL for it in the Query URL field.

  • Mac won't open pages in browsers. Chrome and Firefox won't open any pages - Safari will only open a selected few.

I've had some strange browser issues, with Conduit being added to Chrome (which I've tried to remove via the browser settings). Chrome will open my Gmail account but no ther pages. Firefox won't open anything. Safari opens a few pages (this forum thankfully) but is very selective.
Google is returning results to me via Google.es rather than Google.co.uk
I can use all browsers freely on other devices on home network (although Google.es has popped up on my iPhone now). I've run anti-virus software which hasn't picked up any problems. I've tried uninstalling Chrome and Firefox, but am unable to do so.
Any help or guidance would be really, really appreciated.
I'm running the most recent version of Mavericks on  2012 iMac.

    Hi,
First of all click Safari/Reset Safari, next click Safari/Preferences/Extensions and turn off extensions. The re-test
If the problem persists, try using safari in safe mode:
Use this link to see how to do this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
If Safari works ok in safe mode, then your problem points to something 3rd party related.
    Have a look at this:

    I hope this helps

  • Safari and firefox won't launch and explorer opens but won't load correctly

    Hi
Something weird is happening to our emac!
Got home yesterday after a few days away and all the apple aps have stopped working
Safari and itunes won't launch at all - they just bounce a couple of times in the dock - then nothing.
Firefox won't launch either - the only browser I can get to launch is explorer - and that won't load properly.
I've tried the software update - it says there's now software - but 'unexpectedly' quits if i try to download anything.
In desperation overnight I re-installed the software from the software restore discs - but this morning it's no better.
I saw a thread earlier that suggested that rogue fonts might be to blame - which could be something because the only page that loads in explorer displays strangely with the fonts all over the place.
Any advice that someone could give would be much appreciated
    thanks x

    HI,
*"In desperation overnight I re-installed the software from the software restore discs - but this morning it's no better."*
Better check the startup disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space.
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode

  • Does anyone know why safari and firefox won't load certain pages

    Hi
I can't get safari and firefox to load certain pages.  For me it's a website programme that i'm using.  I can get into the programme but then certain pages won't load.  This suddenly happened about 3 weeks ago with Safari.  I then loaded Firefox and it worked fine for a few days and now i'm having the same problem and it's the same pages that won't open.  I also have trouble getting other sites to load completely, such as this site.  It's so frustrating as i can't finish building my website and my laptop is only new!
    Help someone, if you can
    Julsea

Hi again and thanks for replying
I can go into their website, cloudaccess and use that properly.  I just can't use my own website properly.  When i say website, my site isn't yet built.  The site i'm trying to access is the backend of joomla.  I can't load it and use some of it but not all of it.
I can access the site through my old laptop (and use it fully) which is a windows one but i can't access it via this one.  I thought it was a cloudaccess problem but seeing as it's only my mac i can't access it through, i'm presuming it's my computer.  I also tried it through firefox and explorer on my windows laptop and it was fine.  It was ok on this laptop until a few weeks ago when it suddenly wouldn't load properly

We upgraded or computer from os x to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 now our icons  for safari and mail won't open

Drag the icons from the Dock, go to the Applications folder and drag Safari and Mail (one at a time) to the Dock. Don't release the mouse button until the adjaxent icons move out of the way for the one you're adding.
That should compensate for the updates to Mail and Safari introduced with SL.

  • Safari and Firefox Won't Load Certain Websites

Starting just today, Safari nor Firefox will go to my university's website. www.weber.edu.  I've tried everything I can think of.  I reset both browers.  Restarted the computer.  I thought maybe it was my router/network, but my windows laptop had no problems loading the website.  I have an '07 iMac with the latest version of snow leopard, Safari, and Firefox.  This just happened out of the blue. It worked just fine yesterday.
Thanks for any help that can be offered.

Please launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type  -- the text below into the window, and press return. Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered (there may be none.) If nothing happens within 30 seconds, consider that to be no output. You can then quit Terminal.

  • Safari and firefox can't open pages

My 15" Macbook Pro will not open certain pages using either Safari or Firefox. For
example, they won't let me log in to this discussion, and I can't check out when trying to make a purchase at Amazon. I have trashed prefs, thrown out cookies, reset Safari 4.0.4, repaired hard drive and permissions , done everything I know how to do short of erase and reinstall 10.6.2. I don't have the problem using this Macbook. Can somebody explain this and suggest a solution. I will buy a backup hd if a reinstall is the only way out. Rudd.

  • Safari AND Firefox will not open Flickr or Yahoo

    Hi
    I'm running MAC OS X 10.7.5, Safari version 6.1.3 and Firefox 29.0.1.
Both Flickr and any related Yahoo page will NOT open on either browser.
WHen I try to open Flickr, Firefox comes up with the error message 'Unable to connect. Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.flickr.com'
Safari comes up with a grey screen and the error message 'Safari can't connect to the server. Safari can't open the page https://www.flickr.com because Safari can't connect to the server www.flickr.com'.
When I try Yahoo the Yahoo home page loads but everything is in blue text and a very basic version. If I click on any of the links the same error messages as above show up.
This has been happening for about 6 months. I was originally only using Safari, but installed Firefox only this evening in an attempt to try and solve the problem, but it has not helped. I get the same problem on both browsers.  Safari worked fine before. I cannot remember anything happening or any change of setting that may have set this off. I have trawled every forum imaginable and followed all the advice I can find, to no avail. I have tried:
    Clearing out caches. Regularly.
    Resetting Safari
    Changing the DNS settings
Looking into the Ipv6 settings (there is no option to turn it 'off'. Changing it to 'link local' only turned the WiFi off
    Turning the Firewall off.
    Turning the Firewall back on.
I have not tried changing any router settings as I'm not sure how. But I can open Yahoo and Flickr no problem using my HTC phone so it can't be a router problem?  I am tearing my hair out here! I read somewhere that Yahoo and Flickr are very closely linked, so the problem must be related to a setting with these sites?
Can anyone out there help? Please!!

    Marwood71,
yes, Yahoo! bought Flickr back in 2005, so they are closely linked.
If you’re trying to use Flickr’s secure HTTP site, then try connecting to https://secure.flickr.com/ instead.

  • Safari and Mail won't open in Snow Leopard

Any else having this VERY frustrating problem of Safari and Mail not opening. I've installed Snow Leopard and downloaded and installed the 10.6.1 update. Then when I try to open Safari, it says, "You can't use this version of the application Safari with this version of Mac OS X. You have Safari 4.0.3." When I try to open Mail, it says the same thing. I downloaded Safari again, and it won't even install it saying, "Safari can't be installed on this disk. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or newer." But I have 10.6.1.
    Help. Anyone? Please?
    Thanks

    HI,
Try launching Safari and Mail from the Applications folder. If it works, drag the Safari and Mail icons off the Dock. Just drag straight up. They'll go poof.
With Safari or Mail open, select the icon in the Dock/Keep in Dock.
If that doesn't help, locate these files.
    com.apple.Mail.plist
    com.appple.Safari/plist
Drag those files to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • When I disconnect my bluetooth keyboard, Safari and Notes won't open the onscreen keyboard

Hi, on iOS 7 when I've dismissed the onscreen keyboard because I'm using my Bluetooth one, but then disconnect my Bluetooth keyboard, I can't get the on-screen one to pop up again in some applications like Safari and Notes. Other applications such as Mail are unaffected.
I Googled this a lot but mostly what comes up are "x tips and tricks for ios 7" articles which don't have anything to do with the problem. The only relavent result that I found recommended I restart my iPad. OK, so I restart my iPad and now the software keyboard works in Safari... That's ridiculous! I don't even want to use my bluetooth keyboard if I have to restart the iPad every time for when I'm not using it!
This apparently affects all bluetooth keyboard models, I use a Logitech FabricSkin folio, but I also have tried it with my Apple Bluetooth keyboard with the same problems.
Tapping in the text area used to bring the keyboard back up, but no more.
Please tell me there is some alternate solution, or a gesture to bring up the keyboard, or something? This is probably the stupidest thing I've seen in iOS 7.
    Thanks

I also have the same problem.  If you turn off Bluetooth, the virtual keyboard won't come back, especially if you're using Bluetooth speakers as well.  Heck, it even rebooted my iPad when I tried this.
I'm very tempted to dump my iPad + Logitech Keyboard if this doesn't get resolved in a timely manner.
