Safari becoming very unstable

The last week Safari has stopped working on many sites I go to. Today, I was simply trying to choose a live stream from NPR and Safari froze. It does not crash. I get the spinning beach ball or it is simply frozen and I have to force quit. This happens numerous times a day. Firefox does not have the same issues. Heavy Flash sites also cause a problem. I have already followed the instructions for deleting flash and reinstalling it.

Hi Jeff,
Try Safari maintenance.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
If you have Safari 3rd party plugins, go here for trouble shooting.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594
If you made Web Clip widgets, the webpage that it is the source of a clipping might be causing Safari to unexpectedly quit. Go into Dashboard and remove any web clip widgets. Then, if you can access the original website, re-create the widgets and see if the issue persists.
If nothing above helps, If Safari still crashes, go to the Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash. Restart your Mac and see if that made a difference.
Also, try logging in to another user account and see if you can run Safari... if not then the problem is system wide. Back up all important data and perform either an Archive and Install or Erase and Install.
You could try downloading and installing the 10.4.11 combo update available here.

Always keep an eye on available disk space. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.*

  • Since Mountain Lion install, sometimes Safari becomes very sluggish and sometimes unresponsive, especially when it is doing autocorrect.

I have had Safari crash in one instance. And, other times it is very, very sluggish while typing a post to Facebook. I had Safari become unresponsive this afternoon, and eventually the whole system became unresponsive. I ended up having to do a power down and power up to clear the system.
Anyone got some suggestions?  This behavior came about since the 10.8.1 update.

The fact that the Time and Date settings are messed up tells me a totally different battery needs replacing.   There are in fact two batteries on every notebook.  The one that is a regular charging battery that frequently lasts anywhere from a year and a half to longer.  But then there is a battery that controls the system clock known as the PRAM battery.  It is this latter battery which also speaks to the firmware of the computer.    That's one which often starts losing its charge after 4 years.   You are closed to that stage now, and depending on the use of your computer, you might speed its demise.  You have to understand how all batteries work on the computers from http://www.apple.com/batteries/   Apple can replace the PRAM battery, and verify your firmware is correctly up to date.    By the way, I agree making a clone is preferable to Time Machine, as you can't really boot from a Time Machine backup.  Until your PRAM battery is replaced I think you will continue to have problems.

  • I find Safari is very unstable on iPad!

Are other people finding iPad is very unstable when using Safari?

No, but then again the problem didn't seem to exist before iOS 5.x. Look in the many other existing threads on this issue for suggestions/fixes.

  • Safari 6 very unstable

    Hi there,
I'm really having intermitent troubles with Safari 6 since the day 1 I updated to Mountain Lion. My Mac is a MacBook Pro 13 (2009) with 6Gb RAM and i'm always using it with tons of open apps (iuncluding Safari with lots of open tabs on it), but still, until the mountain lion upgrade i've never had any problems like these with Safari (or any other app).
What i'm experiencing is: As usual i have the habit to leave Safari with lots of open tabs and 2 or 3 windows. Now, when i'm switching between apps and then back to Safari, it suddenly just crash (closes with no message at all). Sometimes this happens when i'm opening another tab too. This happens intermitently (that is: with no pin-pointed triggering situation that i could force it to occour). When i open it back again, it just recovers with no message at all (some apps just show something about an unexpectedly crash, but not my Safari when this happens) and sometimes the recovery doesn't open the very last tab that i've opened before the crash.
At first i was just waiting for updates that might follow the mountain lion release, but now it is becoming an annoying behavior as it is happening a lot!
Is this something that is happening with other users or some special situation in my machine?
    Thanks in advance
    Marcelo Myara

Same happens to me, exactly the same behavior. However, this started happening when I updated Safari to 6. I was still using Lion when I did update Safari. I figured maybe upgrading to Mountain Lion would help, but on 10.8.2 it is still the same. Prior to the Safari 6 update the browser was rock solid and I have never experienced it crash.

  • Why has Safari become so unstable?

Lately, Safari crashes within minutes, almost every time I use it. It crashes on an unpredictable array of websites (apple.com, nytimes.com, facebook.com). It will crash even when its not the active window. I don't remember when this began, but I recall a recent software upgrade.
Below is the truncated error report last sent to apple.

  • Safari 4 very unstable

I've got so many crash logs from Safari 4 that it's not funny any more (28 at the last count in just 2 days). It may load a page but more often than not it tries to load then crashes. If it doesn't crash then it'll crash on trying to load a second or third page.
I've removed all my input managers from both the root and home directories (including Glims b19, logitech scroll enhancer loader (latest version), SIMBL, Safari Stand) and it still crashes. I've had to resort to going back to 3.2.3 via the 10.4.11 combo update and 3.2.3 update using Pacifist and all seems well in the world again. I've done all the usual troubleshooting stuff (repair permissions, delete caches, delete cookies, and all the other stuff).
From reading the other posts here I'm not the only one having problems with the latest version of safari. I'll leave off from further updates until it's fixed I think!

  • My Netscape 7.2 has become very unstable and unuseable(Netscape will close now,etc.). How do I install Firefox over it and keep all my data? Thanks.

I have XP Pro SP2, 2 gigs, AMD 64x2 5200 at 2.7Ghz. I did a reinstall of my original 7.2 setup file that I have stashed in a folder. It does not find the current mozilla folder and hence nothing works without setting up profiles etc. I was thinking for a long time of getting another browser and mail handler. I have 30 years as a computer tech and know how to use regedit and get to mozilla *.mab and *.html files in the mozilla folder.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Netscape 7.2 is a combined web browser and mail client, Firefox is just a web browser. You may want to consider using [http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ SeaMonkey] instead. It is based on the same code as Firefox but also includes a built-in mail client.
If you want to go with Firefox, see [[Importing bookmarks and other data from Mozilla Application Suite]], it shows how to import data from Netscape 7. If you want an email program as well, Mozilla's offering is [http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/ Thunderbird].

  • Safari very unstable

Since I have done the 3.0 update, Safari on my iPod Touch 1st generation has become very unstable (it crashes more than 2 times in 1 minute) so I wanted to know if some other people had also this problem and how to resolve it...

It is not a Wifi or what else problem it is a application problem (Safari lag THEN crashes after) and yes I restored from a backup and it is not a network problem because before i update my iTouch, I did nort gad this problem....
And I just wanted to know if I backup as new iPod, will I loose all my songs from my iTuneslibrary and else or will I keep them and then I just have to synchronise my iPod and get my songs and apps and else back?

  • Computer randomly shuts down/Very unstable since upgrade to yosemite

Since upgrading to yosemite my computer has become very unstable.
For anyone that can help with what may be causing this issue I would really
appreciate it. As for "Adobe" being a possible cause, how can I determine
which Adobe program and related files are the culprit?
Thank you very much to anyone who offer's their support and help.

A number of problems exist including the likelihood of system corruption as a result of using CleanMyMac.
It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.
There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.
Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.
Besides CleanMyMac2, garbage "cleaning" and "anti-virus" software exists, specifically "Avast", "Smith Micro", and "Symantec / Norton". Those products should not be installed on any Mac, because they convey no benefit and are only capable of creating or contributing to problems.
In addition, that Mac's Hosts file appears to have been modified. Fixing a modified Hosts file requires specific instructions. Apple Support Communities contributor and EtreCheck author etresoft recently added a User Tip discussing that concern, and how to correct it: Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file
The recovery procedure that follows will obviate the need to correct all those separate problems and is likely to require the least amount of your time and interaction.
Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device.

  • Has anyone noticed that Messages (iChat) is very unstable on OS 10.8.3?

I have a 27 inch iMac i5 with 4 GB of RAM. Since upgrading to OS 10.8.3, Messages (iChat) has become very unstable, freezing at least once or twice a day. This behavior is mainly associated with my sending iMessages to iPhone users. The problem is solved by force quitting and re-starting the app. The activity monitor shows the app to be consuming several hundred megabytes of memory when this happens, and the computer slows down considerably, but remains responsive. No other apps have become unstable.
My internet searches are too poorly worded to be of use--searching for "messages" or "ichat" does not yield any results or even any discussion of this kind of unstability. Any thoughts?

Thank you all, a reset all settings cleared up the problem, however I have now lost all my wi-fi passwords.
If you reset all settings then your passwords for Wi-Fi will have been cleared. You will need to enter them again for each Wi-Fi network you connect to.

  • Gvim very unstable

    Hi all,
My GVim (installed from the Arch repos) has recently become very unstable, easily segfaulting every couple of minutes.
I do use a fairly large number of plugins (see below) and I could try disactivating them one at a time to see if one of them is the culprit but I'd rather not go though that route, so has anyone had this kind of problem before?
    Thanks in advance.

Actually vim crashes in the same fashion...  I'm using emacs with evil mode right now as a backup but I'm far from having reached my previous level of customization, and that sucks :-)
My computer works fine other than that, so I don't think it's a hardware issue.
On the other hand, I noticed that when this instability started, I would get "deadly signal segv caught" printed to my terminal after the crash, but now sometimes I don't even get that line anymore.

  • N95 is very unstable

    Hey
My T-Mobile N95 has become very unstable, and is becoming more and more unstable. It crashes in the following situations:
    -Random crashes
-When running java applications it crashes randomly
-When booting up it goes to the nokia logo and quite often cuts to a black screen and goes back to the nokia logo. This can happen 4 or 5 times in a row before finally booting into the OS. This happens especially if its just crashed and restarted
    -When updating the phone
I've done both soft and hard resets and teh issues continue. It does seem to be degrading in stability quite rapidly.
    Thanks fopr any pointers,
    Charlie

Did you try the proper hard reset method that requires you to hold down keys whilst booting or just the reset code? If not it's at the bottom of the post for you to try.
If a hard reset doesn't work and you are unable to update or reinstall the firmware then your only option is to take the phone to a nokia care point as it's most likely a hardware failure.
Care points/service centres and repair info:
    UK • Europe • Asia-Pacific • USA •
Canada • Middle East and Africa
Elsewhere: Click here, select your country, go to the support section, then select repair.
Hard reset (all user data will be lost):
    1. Switch off the phone.
    2. Hold down the following three buttons: Green (the call answer button), * button, and '3' button.
    3. While holding these buttons, hold the power button for a second to switch on the phone.
    4. Release when the phone shows the nokia hands logo or shows other signs of life like the language selection screen.
It may take a few attempts and very flexible fingers!

Hello Albert, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

    10.6.2 / 4.0.3...
Whether you are running Mac OS X 10.6.2 or 10.6.3 your system software is completely outdated.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Software Update.
Your Mac OS X needs to be at v10.6.8 / Safari should be 5.1.7
And make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk to install software updates.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop.
Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

First of all backup your Firefox profile, or at the very least the profile file ''places.sqlite'' and the bookmarks backup folder.Put the files somewhere safe outside the Firefox paths, the Windows Desktop is suitable.
    * [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
Now try to repair the bookmarks database using this add-on
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
If that fails try to recreate the database by deleting the original file and allowing Firefox to restore it from a backup
    * see [[Can't add, change or save bookmarks - How to fix#w_create-a-new-bookmarks-file]]_create-a-new-bookmarks-file
