Safari history not clearing

My Safari preferences are set to removing history items after one day but it doesnt do squat...  Whats up with that?

You need to quit and relaunch Safari to clear the old history.

  • Safari will not clear history

I am unable to clear some old history from Safari on my retina macbook pro with mavericks.  Reset, private browsing, clear cache, clear history, deleting com.apple.safai.plist - nothing works.  History from Ocotber 2013 returns every time, as well as two windows I do not want to automatically open.  What a pain.  Suggestions?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Safari/History.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Show Info in Finder (or just Show Info)
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
    What is the Modified date?
If you don't have read and write access to the item, change the settings as directed here. Note, however, that if one file has wrong access settings, most likely others do as well. If the item is locked, unlock it.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Safari History not saving recent searches

My Safari is not saving recent history. A few days ago my trackpad wasn't opening programs and now it seems to be fine. Now my preferences change every time I restart. Similarly, every time I reopen Safari, the newest history that shows is a few days old. For a few days now it's shown Friday the 17th (it's Monday now). I cleared the history and when I restart the application the history shows up like as if I never cleared it.
Any help would be great, thanks.

Repair Disk actions from the Install DVD
Did Disk Utility report that the disk, "appears to be ok" ?? The instructions at that link were to check the startup disk for problems, not repair permissions.
I didn't know how else to get to the user accounts
Open System Preferences / Accounts. You can access non admin accounts there.
If you haven't set one up, follow the instructions here.
Creating a new user account: 10.5
The reason we ask that users try another user account is to "test" Safari there. If you have the same "history" problems there with Safari, that's why you need to check the startup disk.

  • ICloud Safari History not syncing across my devices with Yosemite and iOS 8

I have a MacBook Pro with the latest update of Yosemite installed, an iPad 2 with iOS 8.1.1, an iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.1 and other things seem to be syncing like my bookmarks, reading list, and all other iCloud data as well as iMessages and text messages. But the one thing that does not seem to be syncing is my browsing history in Safari. This is supposed to be a new feature of Yosemite and iOS 8 and it is working for a friend of mine but not me.
How can I fix this? I've tried going into iCloud settings on all three devices and turning off Safari sync and then turning it back on but no luck.

I spoke with Apple support again this weekend. The first support specialist told me that Safari browsing history was not a feature at this time. When I sent a screenshot of the notes of what updated in Safari 8.0.2 on December 11, 2014 from the AppStore, I got transferred to a senior support specialist. They had me try things like log out of icloud and then reset my network settings on my devices. But that unfortunately did not work. My next step which I did not have time to do, is to see if it is my iCloud account by creating a new iCloud account, logging out of iCloud and then resetting my network settings and then logging into iCloud with the new iCloud account and see if Safari history syncs.
I'm not sure what they will do for me if it is my iCloud account because I have so much on that account and have email addresses that I don't want to lose. And if it isn't the iCloud account they said it is probably my devices but I am not sure what they will have me do to try to fix it if it is. Set them up as new? I don't really want to do that, it takes forever to get everything back on the device.

  • Logging in to remote site, reset safari does not clear the user login info?

I'm logging in to a remote site with a 2 step login.  Authentication then citrix.  User info is not cleared in the authentication portion when I reset safari.  Must be stored somewhere else.  Where should I look?

Launch the Keychain Access application and search for the server name.

  • Safari Does Not Clear History

If I Reset Safari or Empty Cache or Clear History when I go to the address bar and type any letter--I get a long list of all the websites visited. While this is not a big deal for my home computer I do not like this to occur on my work computer. Is there a way to erase all the sites visted from the address bar?
    Thanks

    Using Safari 2.0.4:
I have this same "problem," resetting, clearing the history, etc., and still getting a huge list of autofill possibilities. Of course, anyone else who uses my computer gets my huge list of autofill possibilites, too, so if I had something quietly buried in a bookmark folder, it shows up as anyone begins to type. Not very private. I looked through all the Safari and Apple help and never got the answer, until just now. Thanks for the answer and the workaround, even though there's no real solution.
I can't believe that typing in "www" is really bringing up every single bookmark I have! If Apple is listening they should certainly have a Preference setting to keep this from occurring in the next Safari update. It is junky and annoying to me and evidently to some others, too, since I see several messages referring to the same issue. It looks just like a huge "history," which is what I thought it was.

  • Safari search history not clearing

I have a first gen iphone. I've tried everything from going through the settings and clearing the history, cookies, and cache. Also rebooted, restored and still the history is there when I do a search. How do i completely erase the on phone search history?

Disregard, the only solution I found to this was to go through Settings/General/Reset/Reset all Settings. Kind of a pain if you ask me but since I'm a first gen owner it's kind of refreshing to go through and re-set all previous settings and find some little nifty things out about the past updates.

  • Ability to recover Safari history once cleared?

My darling child has figured out how to clear the internet history. Is there a way to either block this feature (using a password?), recover the cleared items, or maybe hide the tab?

    Multiple Accounts.
Give your child his/her own, non admin account and only permit them to use that account. Do not use that account for any of your business. That way, the only clearing the child can do is from that account. This is done in System Preferences/Accounts.
Mac OS X is a multiple user OS. Use that feature. Do not use the Administrator account as your main account unless you are sure you understand the level of access an Administrator has in a Unix OS. It's a bit like locked doors...they can be a hassle, but they give considerable safety.

  • Safari will not clear my username and passwords it has saved

I am trying to get Safari to clear saved usernames and passwords from the saved list and it refuses to do so. I've done everything from go into settings and click edit on the usernames and passwords and click remove and even remove all and nothing happens. I've also clicked on file and reset safari and my usernames and passwords still aren't deleted. Whatever happens, I do not want to lose my bookmarks though; those are very important to me.
    Thanks,
    Travis

    HI Travis,
    In Safari Preferences - Autofill
Make sure: user names and passwords is deselected.
Open Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities) Select Passwords on the left.
Delete all the keychains for the sites you don't want user names and passwords saved for.
    Relaunch Safari.

  • 'Reset Safari does not clear rss feeds' cache before restart

Everything is in the subject line. Reset Safari doesn't seem to clear the rss feed cache, until Safari is quit and restarted.

It's possible that your ISP is serving up the "older" file.
    Do this to "trick" it:
    Old URL = http://apple.com
Change the URL in the browser address and add a question mark at the end of the URL:
    New URL = http://apple.com?

  • AutoComplete History Not Clearable

I selected Clear Recent History. Checked Form & Search History. Selected Everything for the Time range. Clicked OK. But all form history is still available on all web pages. Why is the history not cleared?

You can delete the formhistory.sqlite file in the Firefox profile folder if Clear Recent History isn't working.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

  • Safari history will not clear with open windows

I clear my history on Safari but I found the history doesn't really clear if i have other open windows in safari. Everything in the history bar disappears but when you type in URL in a new window, it will predict from a history that should be erased. I do have a workaround.....I have to close all safari windows, clear history, and that gets everything. I would like to not have to close all windows. This just started happening a month or so ago after I upgraded. Any plans to fix this?

The reason you have a clear history button is so history will be cleared It is not clearing if other windows are open.
Correct. It does not clear if other windows are open. This is how all browsers work.
No other browser works that way.
IE 7.06 tells you you have to close the browser after deleting the history to finish removing the history.

  • Safari History does not clear

I can't seen to clear URL history in Safari. I have clicked "clear history" in the history menu, and also "reset safari" in the safari menu. History appears cleared, but entering a part of a URL brings up URL history!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Are you sure that the URL's that appear are not on your bookmarks list?
If you type the first part of a bookmarked URL into the address bar, Safari will complete the URL for you.

  • Safari history on iPad won't clear. Can you help me?

I'm using iPad 2, 64GB running iOS 7.1.2.  I want to clear browsing history in Safari, and I cannot select this simple option, because:
    1.  Within Safari on the iPad, the "Clear" tab at the bottom of the History folder is faded and not selectable.
    2.  In Settings, in the Safari menu the "Clear History" tab is also faded and not selectable.
    3.  I have attempted to find any sort of password or passcode required to clear History, but I cannot locate such a field.
Can anyone offer advice as to how to clear history?
    Thanks

Try going to settings> general> restrictions> and remove all restrictions.
