Safari is bloated

Safari has brought my two-year-old macbook pro to its knees.  After browsing for a relatively short period of time, with about four tabs open, the virtual memory used by "Safari Web Content" approaches 1 GB, and the computer spends most of its time paging.  (Or at least I think it is paging. The disk is constantly running.  I can't figure out how to tell from Activity Monitor which process is accessing the disk.)
My hard disk has 32 GB free, which ought to be enough space to manage virtual memory.
Closing tabs does not generally reduce the size of the Safari footprint.  (Browsers generally seem to be inherently leaky, since none of the other browsers that I have tried to use, Firefox and Chrome, seeem any better than Safari.)
Is there any hope for me, or do I have to buy a new computer with more RAM?

Empty the Safari cache more often.
Delete unsupported Safari add ons. Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Reset Safari.
Clear the History.
32GB is cutting it too close and will slow the down the overall performance of your Mac.

  • Stunnigly slow load time. It isn't my system, because both Chrome and Safari load in less han ten seconds. Firefox is too bloated.

Folks, I don't use Firefox much anymore. Why? Because the load time has become ridiculous. Chrome and Safari both load in less than ten seconds. Firefox can take up to a minute. And usually does. It has become bloated. It has lost the intent. You say the fox is the fastest? It isn't. Either in load time or search time. Chrome smashes the fox. Simpler, cleaner, faster. Isn't that what Firefox was all about in the beginning? You folks need to take a giant back step.

Agreed...I'm considering jumping ship. Too many crashes, hangs constantly, too many secure sites the server can longer find even though they've been bookmarked for ages, takes forever to load and plug-in issues galore. It's sad, the last 6 months have been horrendous and nothing is getting fixed with all the constant updates. No one should have to clear cookies and cache as much as is always suggested here just to get pages to load that load on other browsers with no problem.

  • Replicating Safari, Mail records of iMac apps to Macbook apps using TM

My IMac HDD died which is no prob since I have 3yr extended warranty and while it is out of commission (and just for plain convenience anyways) I wish to replicate my entire email archives PLUS and more importantly my autofill, history, cookies et al from the Safari backups on my WD Tb to my MacBook.
I have long used the false security of Back to my Mac screen sharing which appears to have been only a rather lame and weak even if somewhat more secure substitute for full synchronization which does not seem to be possible.
I have this same beef with .mac(MobilMe) because due to the disparity between drive sizes on IMacs and MacBooks it is impractical to do complete synching between them due to the much larger installed software capability of the IMac (notably bloatware like AdobeCS, Iwork, ILife and WinXP on it's own VMware NTFS partition). Thus in spite of using password and username redundancy (for my own sanity) I've had to settle for synching keychains and preferences only even though not Tray and Widget items and trial or seldom used apps etc. for which there is simply not enough room on a 120Gb drive.
Thus I used both Backup.app for special cases backing up selected document backups(avoiding Downloads) to .mac and Time Machine avoiding all/most media, and applications folders (since those software updates plus Miro and EyeTV deletes (and reorganizing/re-filing editing my own pictures music & videos were eating up my Terabyte drive alarmingly with useless duplications of often quite disposable or redundantly relocated hugeitems in document workspaces)
So now my question is how do I replicate my master mail account, which used different (leave on server mail pickup preferences and never synched fully with the archive on my IMac, and my master Safari history (which I never erase since I'm more worried about me not bookmarking it than someone else checking it out) and Safari's autofill and cookie files or folders replaced on this MacBook, to get my life, which was backed up at 5:40AM moments before my HDD choked it's last moved over and replicated to my mundane basic MacBook apps?
My MacBook Safari has the preferences and OS-spam bloated plus my basic sparse general bookmarks synched only, not the important stuff like history, cookies and autofill in spite of my synching keychains which apparently doesn't work since I've read Safari has my autofills strewn around in Address Book or somesuch irrational craziness??
At least does anybody know how to do a simple Netscape type whole User file swap on Safari?

What on earth is wrong with this OSX nightmare?
First of all my second MacBook computer (which is a bit newer) has information on it that was unfortunately never properly or completely synchronized despite my reasonable attempts to do so, (not including that complete "first edition" of incremental laptop apps and data lost when the HDD died the first month I attempted to set it up, 3 months after I bought it) due to the several email accounts POP server settings that had to be different in order to assure that I could use my many older pre-existing POP server accounts in READ ONLY MODE in MAIL on the rare occasions I needed a laptop.
Second of all I am "userme" (*example) and "userme's" folder is userme's initials "UM" and that remains the same as does "userme's password" regardless of what ever mac it is I shall ever use or own! It is irrational for me to have to have 2 or 3 or 5 different admin passwords, usernames, shortuser names and login passwords for as many Macs as I should want to own (and moreover, use screen sharing, Time Machine and .mac with! This is why UNIX invented machine names...
Third of all, I am paying for a .mac account which only one Mac which I own and run OSX on can use Time Machine on which unfortunately due to it's stingy disk space and woefully slothful speeds and bandwidth limitations is useless for Time Machine, and of course it appears that I need a separate Terabyte+ Time Machine backup external drive for each computer since Time Machine cannot differentiate (it's duplicatfile+ uselessbloatfile+ redundantly named) non-unique backups on a single sharable external drive let alone access a shared network one should I wish to use my Airport Extreme's slothful local network clogging USB port to do so.
Thus i have to have a Firewire Terabyte WD MyBook that is 60% consumed by/for IMac backups and a spare TrekStore 500Gb USB (that I have yet to setup) for Time Machine backups on for the MacBook. This is solely because the IMac and MacBook are incompatible in file system size, and cannot host anywhere near a similar compliment of apps or documents, because Apple refused to allow me to exchange and pay for the difference in price between the price of a system-compatible (then 250Gb) HDD I was insistent on for my MacBook HDD after the lame 120GB one suppled with it croaked on arrival! Now the the 250Gb one in the Imac is croaked too this may be a silver lining since i shall not accept it back as repaired unless I am allowed to have the defective device replaced with a 320Gb replacement regardless of warranty policy, charge nor price! (the IMac is so frighteningly and mysteriously constructed it is apparently in no way user replace or upgradable)
Thirdly for my old Windows PC "My Documents" archives (which I still have thankfully on my pile of old PC's) and the few newer software receipts and junk I did backup on .mac the Backup app that you have suppled appears to be likewise similarly totally dysfunctional as well as is the Migration Assistant app since the Migration Assistant app will ruin the Time Machine backups on my WD Terabyte drive and the Backup app WILL NOT RESTORE any files stored at .mac backed up from my IMac onto my MacBook because even though it appears to mount them after a prodigious unmonitored period of waiting selecting any (actually had to try 11 times till I discovered only the last one) of the dozen 'fullbackup' documents or the 20 random differently dated and all incomplete "incrementalbackup" documents and selecting all or any part within them whether choosing to "restore to a different location" (since the IMac locations don't exist on the MacBook) or not, the "Restore files" button remains grayed out!!!
Just what business is it of Time Machine or Backup what my username and user folder is called?

  • Problems viewing text in Safari 2.0.4

I'm hoping someone can help me; when a user visits this website in Safari 2.0.4 on certain sub-category pages the text either runs off the page and under the graphics on the right handside or words get cut off in the middle and word wrapping does not work.
Text gets cut off - http://www.totallybarbados.com/barbados/Barbados_News/3025.htm
Text runs off the page and behind the graphics - http://www.totallybarbados.com/barbados/Accommodations/
This website is newly designed and works perfectly in IE, Firefox, Netscape, Opera and other Mozilla based browsers but not Safari. These pages and website all pass W3C World Wide Web standards but isn't displayed properly in Safari.
Can anyone help give me any advise on this problem and if there can be a solution?
    Much appreciated.

Where did you get 67 errors? http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.totallybarbado s.com%2F shows the only error is the "pre" tag which are necessary hacks for formatting the "pre" tag. The other "warnings" are no different than checking apple.com http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?profile=css2&warning=2&uri=http://w ww.apple.com
They also do not assign background-color to "every" css element. Why would you (to bloat CSS)? So, there is exactly "one" error which is well documented and is supported in CSS2.1 when released.
The problem is that Safari does not adhere to white-space or "pre" tags (preformatted text). This has been an ongoing problem since it's incarnation. All other browsers (FireFox, Netscape, IE, Opera, Mozilla..etc) do. http://www.w3.org/TR/1998/REC-html40-19980424/struct/text.html#h-9.3.4

  • Pdf files won't open in Safari running on a Mac

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard in preparation for Lion and ever since the upgrade, pdf files won't open in Safari.  I have Reader 9.4.5.  It opens documents that are on my machine, it just won't open in Safari, nor do the documents download.

MIght be helpful to disable Adobe plugin by going to Adobe Reader's Preferences -> Internet and unchecking "Display PDF in browser using".
Then dump the atrocious bloated Reader.
See this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3252667?start=0&tstart=0 for further solutions.

  • Force PDFs to open in Preview instead of Safari?

When I click on a .pdf link in Safari, it opens up in the browser as part of Acrobat Professional. How can I instead have it automatically open in Preview (which is much faster, less bloated)?

    Hi
First open Acrobat Professional. Open Preferences. Change the PDF viewer default.
Next, go to the Finder: Internet Plug-ins folder in either the main or User Library. Remove the Adobe PDF plug-in. Restart Safari.
PDF should now open in Safari. If you want to save or print it, right or control click to access the contextual menu. You can also port the PDF to Preview via the Contextual Menu.

  • Why does the Acro 9.3 Updater ask for Safari Plug-In 3 Times?

Adobe's software is generally known for its massive bloat (Acrobat 9's 1GB install size, I'm looking at you), but when one of the updates asks me to install its craptacular Safari Plug-In that takes aeons to start up and simply pales in comparison to the Apple Preview Plug-In, and then doesn't take no for an answer but goes on to ask me two more times if I want install its crap I begin to understand why Apple hasn't allowed Flash onto the iPhone or the iPad.
Ok, I'm done ranting for today. If the language is too strong (or honest) for Adobe's moderators, go ahead and delete me. It's not as if I'm actually going to waste money on you again.

  • SETTINGS for "search in page" in Safari? (iPad)

When using iOS 4.3, "search in page" in Safari browser finds the search word INSIDE words as well.
Eg: search "wave" and it finds "waves" and "shockwave" as well.
When using iOS 6, "search in page" in Safari browser finds the search word only in the beginning of words. (Spotlight search I think that's called?)
Eg: search "wave" and it finds "waves" but not "shockwave".
Are there any settings where you can choose between theese methods? (Sometimes the other method is more useful than the one you are using for the moment)

    1. The Safari search-in-page has same behaviour as apples "Spotlight" (the global search in iPad and other).
In the ios6 that apple distributed to my ipad2 the search function DOES NOT search inside words. Neither in ios 5.1.1. But in version 4.3 it DOES search inside words, but apples user-hostile policy prevents us from downgrading ipad2 to ios 4.3.
    2. A reset does not fix that issue. Neither clearing History and so on.
THE MAIN ISSUE WITH IOS6 ON IPAD2 IS SLOW PERFORMANCE. The hardware in ipad2 is not dimensioned for bloated software like ios6.
I have now "downgraded" ipad2 to 5.1.1 by getting ANOTHER IPAD2. It is faster in keyboard response and so on than ios6, but not as fast as 4.3. For now I don't care about the search issue. And I will certainly not upgrade ipad2 again to ios6 or anything above.

  • Is there a way to automaticaly open all previous tabs after safari restart?

because i allways have many tabs open, it is anoying to reopen them everytime when i open safari or when it crashes. opera has such a feature for example or seamonkey.
to "open all the windows of the last session" wont somehow do the job...

    Hi,
if i change browser, which one would you suggest? Cabino, Firefox (isnt this the older version of Seamonkey?) or Seamonkey?
    They are all related.
SeaMonkey is essentially the old Mozilla application under a new name - this includes Web-browser, e-mail and newsgroup client, IRC chat client and HTML editor
Firefox was the offshoot of Mozilla that only provided the web-browser in an aim to keep things as slim and bloat-free as possible (up for debate these days )
Camino uses the same rendering engine (Gecko) as the other two, but does not support their plugin architecture and wraps itself up in a nice Mac-oriented interface.
All are good browsers. Most people prefer Firefox. I prefer Camino
There's no problems downloading all 3 and seeing which you prefer however.

  • Why is Safari unexpectedly quitting after Mac OS 10.6 update?

My safari keeps closing unexpectedly after I updated my software with Mac OS X 10.6 update 10. Does anybody know why?

Thanks, that answer would SEEM to make sense.
But I deleted  all the preference files (not just the one you suggest) and restarted , etc... several times.
End result: Flash CS4 still crashes, if not on opening, then everytime I try to open my old documents and reset the preferences.
I am currently reinstalling my entire hard drive just to try to get CS4 to work again.
I have worked with Flash since 1998, using it professionally for everything from short interactive demos to feature length animated films.
CS4 is without a doubt the most poorly designed, inefficient version I have ever dealt with.
A great and useful animation program was turned into a piece of bloated garbage filled with bugs and inefficiencies.
I will switch to the first animation program that comes along to replace it, now that adobe seems to think the only real use for flash is to create low level acton scripts (despite being used for tv show level animation production for years.)
These forums amply demonstrate that adobe has almost no useful support for its products and no real vision or idea of what it is doing.
The fact that you can no longer even export flash as a quicktime movie that actually accurately plays is another nail in the coffin.
I wish somebody at Adobe cared.

  • Opening Videos with safari?

    Hi all,
I am having trouble opening videos with the new safari public beta, safari always downloads the file i click on, whereas in explorer or mozilla it could open the videos through media player or an equivalent without download but using the temp folder, the videos would basically stream. How can i acheive this with this new browser. All help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I'm betting Safari 3 for Windows is taking a page from Safari 2 for Mac, in that it either opens video in the browser window (Quicktime movies, for example), or downloads the video to your Desktop. Unlike Firefox it's historically never had the option to just open something directly without electing a download. This presumably simplifies file management by eliminating the need for large temp files that can, if unchecked, become bloated with leftover downloads.
You can set Safari to open so-called 'safe' downloads automatically after download, producing the same effect as Firefox's "Open With" option. It should be on by default, but you can check it's status in a plist file (it should be someplace in Preferences, but I don't see it yet, perhaps not implimented, or perhaps I'm just blind) located at C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari\Preferences.plist
Verify the following property is set to true:
    <key>AutoOpenSafeDownloads</key>
    <true/>

  • Could Safari cause kernel panic?

I've had two kernel panics in two days, and both times I had Final Cut Pro running with Safari. The cause seems to be bad RAM ('Uncorrectable Fbd memory error detected' was in the log) but its an odd coincidence. FCP has been really stable and is a fresh install, but my Safari settings were migrated over from my G4 and it has about 4 years of bloated settings and bookmarks (it's nowhere near as snappy as the Safari in my clean account).
Even though it's probably bad RAM, could Safari be the culprit in actually setting off the kernel panic? Like a sharp spike in memory usage from opening a new page actually triggers it (like when Bill Bixby gets angry)?
    JK
    Mpro 2.66, G4 Dual 1g, 15" Powerbook 2.66, 3g iPod   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

One way of confirming bad RAM is to run the Apple Hardware Test from your Tiger Installer DVD. When you start-up from the DVD, you hold down the option key. Eventually, the Hardware Test icon appears. Select it. When fully loaded, select the "quick test". This will test the various components of your system, including the RAM.
I have doubts about Safari causing the kernel panics. Have you seen this Apple Knowledge Base article about Kernel Panics?
One way to speed up Safari, especially since you carried it over from another system, is to trash the Icon folder in your User Account>Library>Safari folder. This holds the site icons. Trashing it will reset the file. Initially, the small icons appearing in the address bar will revert to a blue dot. Over time, the favicons will start to appear as you visit various sites.
Another way to speed up Safari is to select "empty cache" in the Safari Menu.
Post back after you run the hardware test.

OUCH you're using layout mode... The code is horrible.
anyways you should be able to center your table like this:
    <table width="896" border="0" cellpadding="0"
    cellspacing="0" id="tdtableportfolio" align="center">
This is your first and only table at the top of your code. I

But really you should not build your pages using layout mode.
    It generates bloated code, horrible

  • Internet/Computer Speed Slow Since Safari 5

Ever since I installed Safari 5 on my iMac, it seems to be having trouble surfing the internet with any sort of normal speed. Since it's a mac, you'd assume that it would be super fast like it is over the wireless connection on my Acer Aspire, but Safari 5 appears to have killed it.
I've tried clearing the cache, getting rid of the non-mac plugins and unplugging and replugging the cable connected to the router on both ends. It seems to only be a temporary solution (Internet is only at a normal speed for less than 5 minutes)Is there something that I'm missing that needs to be fixed or something that I should try?
The specs of my iMac (G5+iSight):
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac8,1
    Version: 10.6.4
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1

    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM81.00C1.B00
    SMC Version (system): 1.29f1
Any help would be great at this point

I have nothing too earth shattering to add at this point, other than to say:
Have you tried using Firefox as your browser? If so, does it still run as expected?
Clearing caches usually slows things down for a while. The cache allows for speedier downloading of previously visited web pages, but they can become bloated and unmanageable. I haven't cleared by caches for years, but my web experience remains satisfactory.
All web browsers are resource hogs. Nearly every article I have read about speeding up the net experience recommends periodically closing and re-opening the web browser. I usually do it a couple of times a day on the weekends when I do more web surfing that what's good for me.
Sorry I can't answer your particular question, but that's my two cents.
