Safari: Keystroke to "Merge All Windows?"

Hello,
Although I am loving Mac OS X Leopard like I've loved no other operating system in my life, I do have one pet peeve that affects Safari specifically.
I wish there was a single window mode to save me the trouble of dealing with multiple cascading windows and such. In this day and age, we simply shouldn't have to worry about window clutter. Tabs are there for a reason--+to save us this trouble.+
It seems that Hao Li is releasing a new version of his famous Saft plugin soon. This will probably include single window functionality, but alas, I've paid for two versions of his product and simply don't feel as though I should have to pay for this new upgrade when Mozilla Firefox offers free add-ons that accomplish what I want.
That being said--and unless someone has any other tips for enabling a single window mode in Safari--my focus is now on the "Merge All Windows" command in the Window menu. It works great, but as far as I can tell, it must be invoked by a mouse click.
Can someone tell me how to assign this command a keystroke?
Thanks

Well, I didn't receive any help from this discussion so I investigated further and found that Mac OS X allows you to customize shortcuts for almost any application via System Preferences > Keyboard.

  • In Safari is there a Keyboard shortcut for Merge All Windows?

Majority of sites sill open new pages in new windows, not new tabs. So, I keep using the Merge All Windows feature all the time. Please, provide a keyboard shortcut for this!

Although there is no default keyboard shortcut for the menu item in question, there is nothing preventing you from creating your own.
Under System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts, press the "+" sign. From the Application drop-down menu, choose Safari. In the Menu Title field enter "Merge All Windows" -- without the quotes. In the Keyboard Shortcut field, enter your desired key combo and then click the Add button.
You'll need to quit System Preferences and restart Safari for the change to take effect. Good luck.

  • Can Safari create a hot key about "Merge All Windows"?

Well, I am now using Safari for Windows Public Beta, and it is really a fantastic browser. But there is one thing that I am not satisfied with. Although I set "open in new tabs in the same window" in the preference, when I click a link, the browser does not open a new table in the same window, like the Firefox does. So I have to select the "Merge All Windows" item , which has not a hot key. Is it a bug of the browser? Or can Apple set a hot key to this function?

At the moment, there's no hotkey for this function, but you can make a feature request at bugreport.apple.com

  • An icon in the toolbar for "Merge All Windows" ?

I use the "Merge All Windows" function quite a lot and I think it is cool and quite useful. But, is there a way that I can create an icon in the toolbar for this "Merge All Windows" function? Thanks!

You're welcome. Glad to have helped.

  • Safari 5 - Lost Reopen all windows from last session

Do you know, how to make "Reopen all windows from last session" work in Safari 5? I dont have this option in History…
    http://tinypic.com/r/2m6lwfb/6

I have same issue and here is the solution.
Suppose you installed SafariStand plug-in, remove "SafariStand.bundle" from your /Library/Application support/SIMBL/Plugins or ~/Library/App....
I think it makes reopen function doesn't work, however, I still leave that file bcz Toggle Sidebar function is awesome.

  • I don't want Safari to re-open all windows from last session; can't make it stop. Set Safari preferences to new window and new tab open with blank page, but it won't.

P.S. Also cleared cache and History. Running OS 10.7.4 and Safari 5.1.7.

I hate this "feature", and it is another example of Apple taking functionality (and choice) away from the user. In this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4550
there is a description of it.
    Resume in OS X Lion
When you open Safari in Lion or restart the Mac, Safari automatically restores the open windows and tabs from your last browsing session, so you can continue right where you left off.
Tip: To open Safari without resume, hold down the shift key (⇧) as you open Safari. Safari will then open with the options you selected in the "General" tab of Safari preferences, options like your homepage.
In Mac OS X v10.6 and Microsoft Windows, you can choose to have Safari automatically restore your windows in the "General" tab of Safari preferences.
99 times out of 100, I DON'T want to restore all the windows from my last browser session. It makes zero sense for them to take the checkbox out of the General tab of the Safari Prefs.

  • Safari doesn't "Reopen All Windows From Last Session" and links from Mail

After a crash I found myself trying to "Reopen All Windows From Last Session", then I found that if I click a link from Mail it does not open it ... as well from any other application. It's like only workin' within itself and can't interact with any other application. Plus I used a lot "Reopen All Windows From Last Session" and now it doesn't work

Same thing just happened to me. Reinstalling Saferi did not help.

I have downloaded Lion and Safari 5.1. Whenever I open Safari it should open to my home page. It does but when I close Safari if I had mre tha one window opened then all those windows reopen instead of just my homepage. Or if I close the windows first then quit Safari and reopen it will reopen to whatever the last page opened was instead of my home page. Help?

If you upgraded to Lion v10.7...   Lion does not support Power PC apps.

  • I want Safari to open with all windows from last session.

I have selected that option from the preferences menu, but it doesn't work. It just opens a new page. What do I do?

    System Preferences > General
Uncheck the box next to    "Close windows when quitting an application".
    Hope this helps.

  • Location of File Containing Data for "reopen all windows from last session"

I'm a heavy-duty Safari user and usually keep 100+ tabs and windows open, carefully invoking the command "reopen all windows from last session" each time I restart. Unfortunately, I screwed up today and started and quit Safari without invoking "reopen all windows from last session," and all of my open tabs and windows are gone.
I can recover the tabs manually using my history listings, but there must be an easier way: the information about the last session has to be stored somewhere. I did a Deja Vu backup on Friday and today I copied the files /~user/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist and all the files from /~user/Library/Safari, including HistoryIndex.sk, History.plist, and LastSession.plist, from my backup to my hard drive, but the result was unchanged (that is, my 100+ tabs and windows were nowhere to be found).
Given the time it takes for Safari to shut down, I assume it's storing a large history file somewhere, if only I knew where. Does anybody out there know or could otherwise help my recover from my stupidity?
    Thanks in advance.

I found a work-around. Since I frequently quit Safari and "reopen all windows from last session" upon restart, my history reflects all of the open tabs and windows contiguously. I thus reloaded the history file, invoked the command "History --> Show All History," found the most recent such contiguous history listing, shift-clicked and selected all relevant listings, and then double-clicked. All of my formerly open tabs and windows were reopened in tabs within a single window. I had to go back and rearrange things but it was far simpler than manually reopening all of those tabs and windows.

  • Reopen All Windows from Last Session Sometimes Doesn't

I guess the title sums it up. Sometimes when I startup my iMac in the morning, after having shutdown the evening before, and open Safari and choose "reopen all windows from last session" I may only get one window instead of the three or four I might have had open.
I do use tabs so I know I could open them all in one window but sometimes I end up with other windows open anyway, each with multiple tabs. I know I could just let my iMac sleep and leave Safari open but sometimes I end up shutting down.
Anyway, does it have something to do with the way Safari was last closed? Does it matter if I close each window one by one? Should I simply quit Safari and let all the windows close themselves? How exactly is "last session" defined? I'm probably overlooking something fairly basic but it is a bit confusing.

    HI Steve,
If you have multiple Windows open, Safari should reopen those when you relaunch Safari.
Open a Finder window select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder, then the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder. Move the cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.
If that didn't help, try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file. Quit Safari if it's open. Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Now launch Safari. If Safari "reopens all windows from last session", move that .plist file to the Trash.
If that didn't help, Quit Safari. In a Finder window select your Home folder in the Sidebar again. Open the Library folder then the Safari folder. Move the LastSession.plist file to the Trash.
    Thank you for the star.

  • How can I merge all of the new FF windows that are open into one window with multiple tabs? Safari has a merge windows feature that I like. This is really nice when conducting reasearch on multiple sites at the same time.

When I clik on weblinks they all open into new windows making it somewhat painful to clik on window in the menu bar to go to each new page. I would rather have a feature that would allow me to merge all of those individual windows into tabs within one page.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

Thank you. That worked. I was able to open 1 window with multiple tabs. Thanks cor-el!

  • Merge Isolated Window Feature Taken Away In Safari 4.0.3 (6531.9) Snow Leo

Step 1] Open a website in a new window.
Step 2] Open another new website in another new window
Step 3] Attempt to merge one window into the other.....mmmm, don't think so.
Why does Apple give functionality then take it away again?!

while in safari go to view > show tab bar. make sure you don't have more than 1 tab open, or it'll say hide tab bar and be grayed out. after that the tab bar will always be there. then all you have to do is grab a tab and movie it out of the tab bar to make it a new window, or grab one window by the tab bar and drag it to the tab bar of another safari window to merge those windows.
    you're welcome.

  • How do I set Safari to prompt before closing multiple tabs OR reopen all of the closed tabs when when I relaunch the application?  The "Reopen all windows from last session" is unselectable.

How do I set Safari to prompt before closing multiple tabs OR reopen all of the closed tabs when when I relaunch the application?  The "Reopen all windows from last session" is unselectable.

It would seem if your choose "Show my windows and tabs from last time" '''''and''''',
*when you last closed Firefox, you had no web site open (just a blank tab), that it would open just that blank tab
*when you last closed Firefox, you had one or more tabs/web site open, that would allow you to "Restore Previous Session"
    #Have you tried that?
#If so, what is happening in each circumstance when you reopen Firefox?
    '''Restore Previous Session'''<br />
Open tabs are automatically saved when closing Firefox beginning in Firefox 4. To open your last session, after Firefox starts, click History > Restore Previous Session. For this to work

  • Safari 5.1.2 opens two of every window when selecting "Reopen all windows from last session" since the latest update.

Since the latest Saffari update to 5.1.2, every time I close Safari and reopen, and select "Reopen all windows from last session," two of every window opens.  I must go through a long list under the 'Window' menu and select one of eac pair and close them.  What a hassle.
