Safari Memory Leak (especially with Google Reader)

Safari starts gobbling up memory with use, never releasing it. I have turned off extensions, moved all internet plugins to disabled directory, restarted, etc. but nothing helps. Right now its sitting at 1.5GB real memory usage.
One quick way for me to replicate this issue is to go through a few hundred google reader items. It never releases memory even when I close that google reader tab. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

If a new account is the same, you've done it all; bar a fresh install, unless you're quite certain everything's as standard...

  • Memory leak problems with loading videos over and over.

    I'm having memory leak problems with loading videos into a VideoPlayer aswell as FLVPlayback.
    What the flash should do:
    - Should be running for 7 days without having to restart the projector.
    - Interface that shows people around a 360 3D model with 5 different parts and at the stops it makes during the rotation you can click to zoom in on a location which plays a movie for that aswell.
    - Shows a video out of 5 parts for a 360 rotation in 3D in mp4 video (added each time and cleaned up, see code below).
    - Still images are used when the video clips are done playing (MovieClip in stage).
    - Should run automatically when there is no user interaction for X minutes.
    What the problem is:
    - The flash (as a exe and swf i guess) starts to consume memory over time (say 10 hours) until the projector crashes. This usually at around 1.75 GB of memory.
    I cannot see why the Flash cannot garbage collect this and free up the memory. Mabye there is something I don't understand about the garbage collection in flash?
    Here is some code from the video loading and playing:
    var fVideo:VideoPlayer;
    VideoCreate();
    function VideoReady(pEvent:VideoEvent):void
    trace("VideoReady()");
         // start playing video
    fVideo.play();
    function VideoLoad(pUrl:String):void
         trace("VideoLoad(" + pUrl +
         VideoCreate();
         if (pUrl != "")
              if (fVideoFolder + pUrl == fVideo.source)
                   fVideo.seek(0);
    VideoReady(null);
              } else {
    trace(fVideo.state);
                   if (fVideo.state !=
    VideoState.DISCONNECTED) fVideo.stop();
    fVideo.close();
    fVideo.load(fVideoFolder + pUrl);
         } else {
    // error no url
    function VideoCreate():void
         trace("VideoCreate()");
         // remove old one
         if (getChildAt(0) == fVideo)
              removeChildAt(0);
         fVideo = new
    VideoPlayer(1024, 768);
         addChildAt(fVideo, 0);
         fVideo.autoRewind = false;
    fVideo.addEventListener(VideoEvent.COMPLETE, VideoDonePlaying);
    fVideo.addEventListener(VideoEvent.READY, VideoReady);

    Hmm. It's in connection with Dropbox. Så apparantly you can only use one of the two at the same time if you want the programs integrated in Finder.

  • Safari does not display GMail/Google Reader unread counts in tab titles

    To reproduce this, do the following:
    1. Create a bookmark for either GMail or Google Reader
    2. Click on the bookmark under Safari to load either site (make sure it has at least on unread item)
    The text in the tab title will not display the unread count. Instead, it displays either "GMail" or "Google Reader". Firefox displays the unread counts for both sites in the tab's title text as follows: "Gmail - Inbox(2) - <email addr>", "Google Reader (2)".
    This is the one of the main reasons why I will continue to use Firefox over Safari. Displaying the unread counts in the tab titles allows me quickly glance at the browser's window with both sites loaded in separate tabs to see if there are any unread items.

    I had the same problem and was able to find a workaround. The key insight actually came from another one of your (jkwuc89) posts where you mentioned:
    Loading GMail or Google Reader from a Safari bookmark appears to behave differently when compared to loading either site from a link on another page.
    The solution is to change the address of your bookmark so that it is similar to loading the site from a link on another page. When you bookmark Gmail, it's address will read:
    https://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox
    However, edit the address of this bookmark to:
    javascript:window.location='https://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox'
    This Javascript snippet will trick Safari to open Gmail as if you had clicked a link on another page and the tab will display the correct page title including unread count. You can follow a similar pattern with Google Reader or other sites that exhibit a similar problem.

    I use Safari in my imac with Google as my search engine. Recently, Bing took over. Extensions still shows Google as default search engine. Search starts as Google but switches to Bing. How do I get rid of Bing, go back to Google?

    Hey ravenbird1,
    Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to use a specific search engine.
    Safari 7 (Mavericks): Search the web

    To set the default search engine, choose Safari > Preferences, then click General.
    If you are having problems with extensions you can uninstall and reinstall the extension.

  • Safari 5.1 won't play with Google Reader, YouTube

    For a couple of days now, Safari won't display Google Reader correctly—it just shows text. Then tonight, it stopped loading YouTube videos.
    In both cases, switching to Firefox solves the problem.
    Anyone else out there having the same problem? Any solutions?
    Eric

    First, go to Safari / Preferences then select the Extensions tab. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari. Try Google Reader and YouTube. If that helped, then it's the Extension(s) causing the problem.
    If it's not an Extension, quit Safari.
    Open a Finder window select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder, then the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder.
    Move the cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
    Relaunch Safari.
    For YouTube, you may need to uninstall then reinstall the Flash plugin and delete Flash cookies.

  • Safari memory leak

    does anyone have any idea if this will EVER be resolved. If I leave my safari open it gradually eats up all my ram!
    Its been happening for tooooo long.
    I expect more from Apple.

    Hi Laura
    Yes, the memory leak is a definite problem that people in the open-source community along with Apple are attempting to resolve. To some extent, the same problem occurs with Firefox. Best remedy at the moment is to "quit Safari", then restart, which resets the memory requirement to a more manageable level.
    I have noticed certain web sites tick up the memory usage, called "World Leaks". Some of these are Java driven sites, others Flash driven. Even some of Apple's web site pages seem to contribute. The web is evolving rapidly. It's quite a can of worms to contain, monitor and coordinate.
    Hope that helps clarify this issue.

  • How do I report a major memory leak problem with Firefox 3.6.10 in WinXP?

    After I installed Firefox 3.6.9 on a WinXP desktop, I occasionally had minor memory leak problems, reflected by getting "out of virtual memory" messages. I upgraded to 3.6.10 when notified that it was available and that it supposedly fixed stability problems. Ever since then, whenever I use Firefox, it starts out quick as a flash, but very rapidly slows down to a crawl, and has twice brought my system to a halt. IE does not cause this, nor any other program I use, but the execution speed of all programs slows as badly as Firefox. If I knew where to get older versions, I would back up to 3.6.9 or earlier. The situation now prevents me from using Firefox much at all.

    Im running windows 7, Firefox 3.6.10 and before i updated to 3.6.10 my CPU never went above 10% with Firefox open. Now it can spike well above 50% and i have nothing different from when i had 3.6.9 to now when i have 3.6.10.
    There is no evidence for me to suggest one of the additions i have is causing it, its all pointing to Firefox itself and the last update.

  • How can I address a memory leak problem with Firefox?

    I have happily used Firefox for the past 7 years, and have rarely had difficulties. However, I am having some trouble now; Firefox (running 3.6.6) seems to have a memory leak on my machine. It's slower than what was discussed in other forum posts, but it still scales up slowly to multiple hundred MBs of Memory with very little CPU usage.
    I have tried disabling add-ons and extensions, but this does not stop the problem. I have cleared my cache and other stored data, but that also does not help. Has anyone experienced a similar problem that might be able to help?

    Hi reble0708,
    I have Java console disabled on my Firefox browser.Everything is working fine for me. There maybe other problem on your browser which is making PDF document faded and blurry. Can you post the link where you found the problem viewing the PDF document?
    Btw, you can go to ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/ and select the previous version of Firefox from the given options. There's no need to uninstall Firefox before you downgrade to the previous version of it.But before new installation, backup your Firefox profile folder.

  • Memory Leak Issue With Win7 64 bit and Youtube.

    I have a Win7 64 bit using IE9 with version 11.4.402.265 installed. 4 MB installed.
    Whenever I go to Youtube or Liveleak, and watch videos, over time it uses up to 4gigs of my memory! Even if I close the window, it does not free up the memory until I Ctrl/Alt/Delete and shut down the window(s).
    I normally only keep open 1-2 windows. Google toolbar is about the only thing installed. I can open 5 and more tabs, but as long as the site does not use flash, I don't have issues and each window usually uses under 200k memory watching them in task manager.
    When I go to open and watch a youtube video, it slowly climbs to 200k and within an hour, I can be at 2 gigs or more memory and up to 4 gigs within 2 hours (or sometimes much sooner). Closing the window does not release the memory until I end task on it and then after a minute or so, the memory seems to clear and everything is back to normal.
    I searched the forums and seems lots of users, report memory leaks, some using yahoo toolbar installed, which is not my case. I do use yahoo as my e-mail address, no idea if that is related or not. I had the same issue when I had the prior Flash version installed, this has been going on for months. Right now having only this window open, using 129, 192 memory. If I open one more window (using the 64 or 32 bit browser) and start youtube, the memory in that window keeps climbing about 50-100kb a second, so it adds up quickly. I have kaspersky running in the background and that is about it other then my nvida driver setup.
    Really frustrating that so many people here and across the internet have reported this. I did have IE8 a few weeks ago and still had the same issue, upgraded to IE9 to see if that helped.
    Interesting side note, if I pause a video, it slows way down on the memory leak, but still rises at a slower pace. I don't know if this is an IE thing or Flash. I have had this setup since 2009 and don't recall having issues with IE7. I use Youtube so much as a teaching instrument as a music teacher, so constantly have lessons going on it.
    Thanks and hope someone has come up with something. I also build computers and have done some programming, so I could modify a file if needed with clear instructions.

  • Memory leak issue with link server between SQL Server 2012 and Oracle

    Hi,
    We are trying to use the linked server feature with SQL Server 2012 to connect SQL server and Oracle database. We are concerned about the existing memory leak issue.  For more context please refer to the link.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/psssql/archive/2009/09/22/if-you-use-linked-server-queries-you-need-to-read-this.aspx
    The above link talks about the issues with SQL Server versions 2005 and 2008, not sure if this is still the case in 2012.  I could not find any article that talks about if this issue was fixed by Microsoft in later version.
    We know that SQL Server process crashes because of the third-party linked server provider which is loaded inside SQL Server process. If the third-party linked server provider is enabled together with the
    Allow inprocess option, the SQL Server process crashes when this third-party linked server experiences internal problems.
    We wanted to know if this fixed in SQL Server 2012 ?

    So your question is more of a information type or are you really facing OOM issue.
    There can be two things for OOM
    1. There is bug in SQL Server which is causing the issue which might be fixed in 2012
    2. The Linked server provider used to connect to Oracle is not upto date and some patch is missing or more recent version is to be used.  Did you made sure that you are using latest version.
    What is Oracle version you are trying to connect(9i,10g, R2...)

  • Memory leak on latest Adobe Reader 8.1.2 Win XP SP2

    Dear Adobe Developers,
    I have encountered a strange problem. I open a PDF file of size about 16.5 MB, I search trough it and then the memory allocated starts steadily growing until it fills out the entire RAM and the virtual memory as well. Strange thing is this only happens after I perform a search through the file; if I don't do it, all stays within normal. I was wondering if it is not a memory leak of some kind? I use Adobe Reader 8.1.2 on Win XP with Service Pack 2 on Celeron 1.7 GHZ, 256 DDR RAM, 320 GB HDD ect .. Normally the RAM occupied by the OS itself is only about 100 MB so there are ~150MB left free. But they seem not to be enough even when we add to them the virtual memory.
    Greetings,
    Georgi Popov, BG

    >I have more than 700 MB virtual memory.
    That's probably not enough for normal operations. A couple of
    gigabytes is safer.
    There may be a problem, though. This doesn't sound like normal
    behaviour. Acrobat may be cacheing text - does the size stop
    increasing if you search for something, and find it, on the LAST page?

  • Memory Leak issue with TreeView

    Hi,
    I get Memory Leaks in the TreeView, if I open the stage which contains the TreeView several times.
    Everytime I open the stage, I clear the TreeView and populate it with new items.

    Hi. If You replace
        rootNode.getChildren().clear();
        rootNode.getChildren().add(new TreeItem<String>("Item"));
      with:
         rootNode.getChildren().setAll( new TreeItem<String>("Item"));
    You will get the following:

    Hi,
    we had the bug 6506818 in 10.2.0.3 on AIX. This is a bug from xmltype to char. The bug also exists in 9.2.0.8. Maybe you are hitting that one. There is a patch for AIX en Sun Solaris.
    I looked further and there is also bug 5726433, memory leak on DBMS_XMLDOM.newdocument. Fot this one is a patch on linux.

  • Safari memory leak with Facebook

    I've been noticing that anytime I access facebook Safari's memory explodes. Even if I just load one page, any page on facebook and then let it sit. Within about 15 minutes Safari will consume all available memory. Did some searching and surprised to not see mention of this here or anywhere else.  Safari version is 5.0.5
    Any ideas? Anyone else experiencing this.

    having updated the OS and built in apps wont update the flash. you need to manually download it from adobe site and install it.
    if you're using chromw, as long as auto update is enabled, it will have flash updated, it is built in.
