SAP GoLive : File System Response Times and Online Redologs design

Hello,
A SAP Going Live Verification session has just been performed on our SAP Production environnement.
SAP ECC6
Oracle 10.2.0.2
Solaris 10
As usual, we received database configuration instructions, but I'm a little bit skeptical about two of them :
1/
We have been told that our file system read response times "do not meet the standard requirements"
The following datafile has ben considered having a too high average read time per block.
File name -Blocks read  -  Avg. read time (ms)  -Total read time per datafile (ms)
/oracle/PMA/sapdata5/sr3700_10/sr3700.data10          67534                         23                               1553282
I'm surprised that an average read time of 23ms is considered a high value. What are exactly those "standard requirements" ?
2/
We have been asked  to increase the size of the online redo logs which are already quite large (54Mb).
Actually we have BW loading that generates "Chekpoint not comlete" message every night.
I've read in sap note 79341 that :
"The disadvantage of big redo log files is the lower checkpoint frequency and the longer time Oracle needs for an instance recovery."
Frankly, I have problems undertanding this sentence.
Frequent checkpoints means more redo log file switches, means more archive redo log files generated. right ?
But how is it that frequent chekpoints should decrease the time necessary for recovery ?
Thank you.
Any useful help would be appreciated.

Hello
>> I'm surprised that an average read time of 23ms is considered a high value. What are exactly those "standard requirements" ?
The recommended ("standard") values are published at the end of sapnote #322896.
23 ms seems really a little bit high to me - for example we have round about 4 to 6 ms on our productive system (with SAN storage).
>> Frequent checkpoints means more redo log file switches, means more archive redo log files generated. right?
Correct.
>> But how is it that frequent chekpoints should decrease the time necessary for recovery ?
A checkpoint is occured on every logswitch (of the online redologfiles). On a checkpoint event the following 3 things are happening in an oracle database:
Every dirty block in the buffer cache is written down to the datafiles
The latest SCN is written (updated) into the datafile header
The latest SCN is also written to the controlfiles
If your redologfiles are larger ... checkpoints are not happening so often and in this case the dirty buffers are not written down to the datafiles (in the case of no free space in the buffer cache is needed). So if your instance crashes you need to apply more redologs to the datafiles to be in a consistent state (roll forward). If you have smaller redologfiles more log switches are occured and so the SCNs in the data file headers (and the corresponding data) are closer to the newest SCN -> ergo the recovery is faster.
But this concept does not really fit the reality because of oracle implements some algorithm to reduce the workload for the DBWR in the case of a checkpoint.
There are also several parameters (depends on the oracle version) which control that a required recovery time is kept. (for example FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET)

How can I convert multiple files at one time and not one at a time

    Hi Plissey1950,
Sorry for the lengthy delay to a response.  Are you trying to convert multiple files to individual PDF files at the same time? (not combine them).  If so, you'll need to use Adobe Acrobat for this function. The CreatePDF service does not have the ability to convert multiple files to multiple individual PDF files.
    Thanks,

  • "Time stamp, Response time and Completion time" in CRM_DNO_MONITOR

    Hi,
We have configured Service desk functionality in Solution Manager 4.0.
In CRM_DNO_MONITOR we were able to see all the data except "Time stamp(0), Response time(00:00:00) and Completion time(00:00:00)" of Service desk message.
Kindly let us know, how to configure so that  "Time stamp, Response time and Completion time" should be displayed in CRM_DNO_MONITOR.

    Hi,
Do u want this for SLA?
In the service desk you have to assign the date profile to the SLFN transaction type.
For this you can use the standard date profile SLFN_HEADER.
award point if it helps you.

  • Response time and transaction count

Any body know, how can i to obtain the response time and count transaction in the database server 9i ?
    regards.

Statspack would be a good starting point. You'll need to define "response time" for your application, but statspack should provide you with the info you need.

  • Slow response time and frequent lockups?

Why does my Adobe Premiere Elements 9 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 constantly lock up (not responding on Task Manager) and/or the response time to do anything is unacceptable (1 minute oe more to do a rename).  I don't think my lap top is the issue is brand new with 6GB of RAM.  I'm to Adobe Elements and Photoshop and so far I disappointed.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

It could be any number of things -- but you haven't given us enough information to be able to help you.
Are you running the 64-bit version of Windows 7? You may want to check out the 64-bit version of Windows 10. It runs like the wind on that OS!
New computers are usually full of outdated drivers, temp files and fragmentation.
Have you manually gone to Windows Update and downloaded all of the latest updates? Do you have the latest version of Quicktime, per the program's requirements?
When did you last clean and defragment your system? In my books, I recommend Advanced System Care from iobit. It cleans your temp files, tunes your registry and defragments with a single button. And it's free!

When does it lock up? When you first starting the program or when you're in the midst of editing? What is the source of the video you're editing when it locks?

***********more available but I truncated it here**********************
I successfully installed and configured the zone.
I then logged into the local zone and installed a new version of Oracle and a working SAP instance. I know that it worked because I was able to log into it.
Upon rebooting the server and the local zone I have lost access to all of my file systems in the Oracle/SAP zone.
It's almost as if the global zone has not mounted its file systems over the local zones mount points. In the local zone I can see no files in the directories where I would expect Oracle or SAP files.
I either mis-configured the zonecfg or missed a step somewhere.
I suspect that my file system contents are still around somewhere waiting to be hooked up with a zone's mount point.
In the local zone a df -k shows all of the file systems (like the local zone knows about what file systems belong) but they all have the same size and free space (probably from the root zone).
    Any thoughts appreciated.

Do you have amount point within the zone path for these oradb mounts?
You have to add a directory entry for /oradb in the zone's root directory, i.e. ``zone_path''/root/oradb

  • What about these file systems: ext4, reiserfs, and jfs?

I use ext3 as my file system now.
It said that these three file systems are better than ext3.
Ext4 is a successor to ext3. I think it must be better.
    Reiserfs is very fast.
And jfs is effective(low usage of CPU).
Could anyone talk about the experiences of using these FSs?

EXT4: should mature into an awesome FS: faster than JFS, and more fault-tolerant. I'll try it one of these months.
XFS: nice. By design, it throws away files on an unclean mount, though. I never had FS corruption, but it would just up and get rid of critical files, like fstab, if I had just edited them and then had a nasty shutdown. Maybe it's a good /tmp FS?
RFS3: it used to be fast with all but large (hundreds of MB) files. IME, the maturing of the 2.6 CFQ and deadline schedulers took care of that. Fsck was never a strong point.
RFS4: what happens to a jet airplane if a bird gets sucked in an engine? It was kind of like that.
EXT3 (as a preface to JFS): from early 1998 up to late 2007, moving from 6.4 to 8.4 to 2x6.4+8.4 to 10 to 20 to 120GB, and well over 100 2000 and XP boxes serviced...I had significant corruption of NTFS FS or files all of three times, and none rendered the system unusable (it took a Win98 low-level FAT32 working trojan to do that...friggin' thing had a low threat level according to Semantic, but ate almost all my C: drive). Since moving to Linux in late '07, I've now had at least six partitions made FUBAR, and a handful that went to read-only at the slightest provocation (to give credit where it's due: I could get data off of those before wiping the partition). I've been working with itty computers lately, and EXT3 has been nothing but trouble (many hard-locks, kernel panics, app crashes while writing, etc.--a little hard on the FS). It seems to be fine on machines running all the time, that do their writing sparsely.
JFS: fast as EXT3, and seems to always recover on an unclean mount. On very slow hardware, it is definitely faster than EXT3...but I mean hardware competitive with Pentium MMXs, where EXT3 regularly maxes out the CPU. Cons? You'd best have your data backed up (but, if you trust any single copy of your data, you're asking for trouble, regardless of FS). It generally can bring your FS back to an old good state. But if not, it will happily throw files away, to make the FS itself clean quicker. So far the worst I've lost were Firefox cookies and other such goodies (never my session, luckily), but it's enough to show the possibilities.

means we have to read file every time Know but i dont
want to be happen that ??? No you don't . You read the file once. You store it in the hashmap. Then you hand that hashmap to whatever class needing the data.
getProperties() returns the hashmap, doesn't read the file.
Maybe I should have called the method getMap or something.

  • Confusion with OCFS2 File system for OCR and Voting disk RHEL 5, Oracle11g,

    Dear all,
I am in the process of installing Oracle 11g 3 Node RAC database
The environment on which i have to do this implementation is as follows:
    Oracle 11g.
    Red Hat Linux 5 x86
    Oracle Clusterware
    ASM
    EMC Storage
    250 Gb of Storage drive.
    SAN
As of now i am in the process of installing Oracle Clusterware on the 3 nodes.
I have performed these tasks for the cluster installs.
    1. Configure Kernel Parameters
    2. Configure User Limits
    3. Modify the /etc/pam.d/login file
    4. Configure Operating System Users and Groups for Oracle Clusterware
    5. Configure Oracle Clusterware Owner Environment
    6. Install CVUQDISK rpm package
    7. Configure the Hosts file
    8. Verify the Network Setup
    9. Configure the SSH on all Cluster Nodes (User Equivalence)
    9. Enable the SSH on all Cluster Nodes (User Equivalence)
    10. Install Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS2)
11.Verify the Installation of Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS2)
    12. Configure the OCFS2 (/etc/ocfs2/cluster.conf)
    13. Configure the O2CB Cluster Stack for OCFS2
BUT, here after i am a little bit confused on how to proceed further. The next step is to Format the disk and mount the OCFS2, Create Software Directories... so and so forth.
I asked my system admin to provide me two partitions so that i could format them with OCFS2 file system.
He wrote back to me saying.
*"Is what you want before I do it??*
    */dev/emcpowera1 is 3GB and formatted OCFS2.*
    */dev/emcpowera2 is 3GB and formatted OCFS2.*
*Are those big enough for you? If not, I can re-size and re-format them*
*before I mount them on the servers.*
*the SAN is shared storage. /dev/emcpowera is one of three LUNs on*
*the shared storage, and it's 214GB. Right now there are only two*
*partitions on it- the ones I listed below. I can repartition the LUN any*
    *way you want it.*
*Where do you want these mounted at:*
    */dev/emcpowera1*
    */dev/emcpowera2*
*I was thinking if this mounting techique would work like so:*
    *emcpowera1: /u01/shared_config/OCR_config*
    *emcpowera2: /u01/shared_config/voting_disk*
*Let me know how you'd like them mounted."*
Please recommend me what i should convey to him so that i can ask him to the exact same thing.
My second question is, as we are using ASM, for which i am gonna configure ASM after clusterware installation, should i install Openfiler??
Pls refer the enviroment information i provided above and make recommendations.
As of now i am using Jeffery Hunters guide to install the entire setup. You think the entire install guide goes well with my enviroment??

    Thanks for ur reply Mufalani,
You have managed to solve half part of my query. But still i am stuck with what kind of mount point i should ask the system admin to create for OCR and Voting disk. Should i go with the mount point he is mentioning??
Let me put forth few more questions here.
    1. Is 280 MB ok for OCR and voting disks respectively??
    2. Should i ask the system admin to create 4 voting disk mount points and two for ocr??
    3. As mentioned by the system admin.
    */u01/shared_config/OCR_config*
    */u01/shared_config/voting_disk*
Is this ok for creating the ocr and voting disks?
    4. Can i use OCFS2 file system for formating the disk instead of using them as RAW device!!?
    5. As u mentioned that Openfiler is not needed for Configuring ASM... Could you provide me the links which will guide me to create partition disks, voting disks and ocr disks!! I could not locate them on the doc or else were. I did find a couple of them, but was unable to identify a suitable one for my envoirement.

  • "Windows 8 using 100% of HDD with high average response times and low read/write speed"

Turns out this is a fairly well known windows 8.1 issue that has been plaguing users since at least 2013 and there is no one simple fix, so it may not be *entirely* hp's fault; but I've had two of these laptops, both the same model, the first one needing to be returned and exchanged for an entirely unrelated issue (hardware failure: ethernet port nonfunctional with lights stuck on). Both are refurbished. Both have been extreemly slow and unresponsive even compared to a lesser Brazos powered laptop I had before, but I've only recently decided to investigate why.
So if there is something HP specific going on here, I hope there is one simple fix. My average response time has gone up as far as well over a minute (>60,000ms), so I may be an outlier case here compared to the typical windows 8.1 hardrive responsiveness/bandwidth problem.
Edit: there is a case with another HP pavilion laptop (intel powered though, so it may be an intel storage driver issue described in the first link) being much, much worse.
