Satellite 1800 plays DVDs very slow

My Satellite S1800 is very slow, when trying to watch dvd movies, picture and voice stucks and when watching videos from youtube, its same thing.
I just formatted my hard drive and re-installed winxp and thought that would help , but no , its still same thing.
What is the problem? My toshibas specs: 1Ghz , 256 ram , 8mb trident cyberblade ai1, 20gb, i think those should roll some dvd movie?

First, I wanted to answer with a detailed reasons of this, but this forum did NOT allowed me to post my "polite and helpful" message due to spelling mistakes even there wasn't any. Then it allowed me to post without spelling checking. (did not understand, weird)
The answer of your problem is because of excessive cpu usage which i had on my similar S1800-100 while watching any MPEG-2 video or youtube video.
I don't know why the DVD drive was insertings into this notebook, maybe for data transfer or other viewing, the fact that your CPU is not strong enough to render DVD movies, it should be the reason.
Please check your CPU usage while watching videos.

Possibly network issues, but I'd begin by restarting all your equipment including the router and trying again.

Do I need to install Windows XP 32bit or install Windows 2000 or any hardware upgrade (memory ... whatever)? I don`t want be disappointed by TOSHIBA!
    Ill appreciate any HELP!

    Hi buddy,
Can you be a little bit more detailed, please? What do you understand with very slow?
How long it takes to startup Windows?
How long it takes to start an application?
I have to say that Windows XP 64bit wasnt popular and there is no official support from Toshiba for this OS. If you want to use Windows XP, I can recommend installing the 32bit version.
Have you tested your notebook with factory settings? Does it work properly with preinstalled OS from Toshiba?
Im also Satellite L300 owner and I use the preinstalled Windows XP 32bit from Toshiba. Im very satisfied with this notebook, its pretty fast and need few energy. :)

  • My Satellite C660 is running very slow

    Hi
I have a C660-2E1 which has always run very slow since I bought it two years ago and I know I should have done something about it before now.
I noticed that it only has 1GB RAM, could this be the problem?
I was going to replace the 1 GB with a 4 GB Module.Does anybody know if this needs to be a 2X2 GB matched pair or can I use a single module?
I understand that as I`m running Windows 7 home edition that it can only address a maximum of 4GB?

    > I noticed that it only has 1GB RAM, could this be the problem?
Yes, 1GB RAM is definitely not enough to get the notebook running smoothly.
I recommend you to upgrade the notebook up to 4GB RAM or higher the RAM can be extended up to 8GB RAM (2 x 4GB RAM)
    The compatible RAM modules are:
    2GB PC2 DDR3 1333MHz (part number PA3918U-1M2G)
    4GB PC2 DDR3 1333MHz (part number PA3918U-1M4G)

  • Satellite A30-514 is very slow, and how to service the cooling fan

My notebook has become very slow now. Power on need to use F1 to boot and this too is absolutely slow process. My machine has 512 MB RAM but shows only 480 MB on control panel. Does anyone think it is a RAM failure that has made the machine slow or something else. I have tried maintenance but did not help.
Also has any one got the details how you could open the unit up to service the cooling fan since the machine heats up a lot and need to service it.
    thanks
    Janak

    Hi Janak,
Ok, lets break this answer down to two parts which hopefully will help:
    1. The reason that Control Panel shows only 480MB when you have 512MB installed is because your laptop uses what is called "shared graphics", which means that the RAM used for the graphics card (which is actually built into the mainboard) is taken from the overall RAM. A quick calculation shows that you have a 32MB grpahics card: 480MB + 32MB = 512MB, so I wouldn't go out and replace the memory just yet!
2.There are several tools which can be found under Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools. These include Defrag and Disk Cleanup. Running through these (I would recommend Disk Cleanup before Defrag) may help clear some clutter from your hard drive and tidy things up a little. This is turn may give you back a little performance.
If none of this seems to make any difference, it may be that your hard drive is nearng the end of its life, or it may be that there is not much free space on it, both of which can cause a system to run slower than normal.
I hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

  • TS2509 play back very slow

Im using motion 4 and it's playing very slow

There are many reasons (too many to list) why Motion will run slow since it is not and never has been about *playing* video. It is about creating effects and titles FOR video. I've created projects where Motion will only get < 1 frame per second on playback (that usually means I have to *simplify* the project considerably...) The only way you can guarantee a smooth up-to-speed playback is to Export your project to video and play the video in a player like Quicktime Player. However, IF you have the RAM for it, Motion 4 will render as much of the timeline it can fit in the available RAM it has to playback with RAM Preview (command - R), usually, at full speed for as much as it can render. Motion 5 does not do as good a job at that.
Lights are notorious for slowing Motion down, especially if you have shadows turned on (Spot and Point lights.) If you have reflections turned on; if you have emitters with high birth rates; if you have a lot of layers in 3D space; if Motion Blur is enabled; and the list goes on and on...  You can temporarily turn off Lighting, Reflections, Shadows, and Depth of Field from the Render menu, which should help speed things up a little bit. You can turn off extra layers (isolate the view to a few specific objects at a time) to speed things up a little bit. But mostly, you're just going to have to get used to Motion slowing down as you progress through a project.

  • Playing music VERY slow after 3.0 upgrade

I have a 32GB ipod touch bought in Feb 2008 (does that make it 2G?). If I listen to my songs in 'shuffle' mode, or with a large playlist, the ipod is extremely slow and unresponsive. After pressing the 'shuffle' button I have to wait about 10-15 seconds before a song starts playing. The touch controls also become very sluggish when playing songs. If I press the 'next' button there's often a 15 second delay before the screen updates and the artwork changes. During this time the controls on the ipod are also frozen which makes it impossible to skip through songs on shuffle mode.
Any idea what's happening or what I can do to fix this?
I'd rather lose half of the new features and just have my ipod play songs properly!

i am also having this problem. if i synch my first generation ipod touch and then try to play music, it says "Updating Library ... this may take a few minutes". then, if i try to play playlists with lots of songs (1000+) the controls are very sluggish, taking 5 - 15 seconds before allowing me to skip to the next song. but, it seems to "fix" itself after a minute or two. i wonder if it is indexing something in the background that it making it run slow? maybe related to the new spotlight feature? i have restored alredy. any advice?

  • Wav files play at very slow speeds.

Real newbie stuff here, and I'm away from my manual...and wouldn't know where to look anyway.
So: I dragged a file I made with my Zoom H4 into Logic express, go to play it, and the voices sound like they are at 1/4 speed. How do I changes this?
    Thanks

Is the file recorded at the same sample rate at your Logic project? (Usually 44,1 Khz)

  • Rental play back very slow

I am having major delay on on my apple TV,  netflix works perfect and the speed on my wireless router is up to speed.  Movie rental are taking over an hour to play.   Any advise

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

  • Apple store installed optical drive replacement. It plays CD and DVD but will not let me change a DVD to .mp4 without stalling and or going very very slow.  Can I fix the HL-DT-STDVDRW  GA11NR?

Apple store installed optical drive replacement. It plays CD and DVD but will not let me change a DVD to .mp4 without stalling and or going very very slow.  Can I fix the HL-DT-STDVDRW  GA11NR?  The Apple store is a two hundred mile one way trip.

I didn't imply anything; I simply explained the terms of the ToU here because you had not specified what you were trying to do. Most such related questions are about copying protected content and I would not appreciate having my post removed with the obligatory email from Apple because I violated the ToU. In any case, you can find dozens of threads googling (or here) about the newer burners being slow copying content if it is protected. FWIW, if the DVD was produced by a commercial outfit, they may have used some sort of protection or an unusual file format - that problem has been discussed here previously.
As for your slow burner - since we don't even know what type of Mac/model/year/OS  you have, it is impossible to guess. If it's an iMac, those vertically installed burners are known to be less than perfect; the horizontally installed versions are better, but still not as good as an external. I've used an external burner for years.
As for the conversion time: the burner should have nothing to do with that; it is your software and your Mac's processor and amount of RAM that matter for conversions and rendering. I have no idea what you are using to burn the DVD. And, as a last consideration: you should always burn your content at a slow speed so you can avoid burn errors and have better results.
    Good luck.

  • Mac Mini Slow playing DVD from Network

    Hi,
I was just wondering is anyone else has experienced slow dvd play with their mac mini's.
Playing from the SuperDrive (dvd player) or Firewire DVD player is NOT a problem. however I have a couple of backed up DVD on a LACIE network drive using CIFS or AFP(Gigabit although my mini is 100FD) and on a Linux server (NFS mount)and the DVD's will not play smoothly.
They are very choppy and unwatchable. I have also tried using VLC but that is even worse.
I 1gb Ram in my mini, I also had this problem under os X 10.4 as well as 10.5. I know that apple say that an intel processor 1.6 is needed for interlacing, but just playing should be fine.
My Suse Linux IBM T42 which is old has no problems playing the movies, but I want to play them on a 23inch Monitor. (the problem also occurs on my 19inch Monitor)
CPU wise. it never gets to 100% but when it goes over 70% the problem seems to occur.
I have tried to shut down all possible applications and disabled spotlight. this improved the playing experience a little.
Any thoughts on this would be great.
    Thanks
    Pete

    HI,
The local disk is about 40% full, I upgraded it to a 160GB drive. (plus leopard was therefore a complete fresh install on a new drive)
If I play the files from the local drive then there is no problem. I also noticed that if I use a local USB to play the movies then this works. But when you only have 2 x usb ports on a mac mini, and the fact I don't want my mini to have control over the disks (so the mini can be turned off etc) as my house mate also has a mac and would like to stream music and I like to have access from my Linux Laptop.
I also noticed that the Mac Mini was very slow at accessing my NFS mount.
I have also done the normal network tests such as forcing Full Duplex 100mb or allowing Auto etc. (also my house mate has the same problem using Mac book pro with a wireless connection) The switch is not busy at all, and until two days ago the only two devices turned on were the Mac mini and the lacie drive
It is very frustrating, I want to upgrade to an iMac next month, but would have like to keep the mini as a media player. I like front row and dvd player they rock as applications. (except for the current issues I am having)
My switch is definitely up to the task. I got a netgear. When my laptop and server (old P4 PC running Linux) are plugged in they are fine with streaming and copying files.
I do notice that the Samba protocol on apple seems quite an 'expensive' over head with resources, but it still seems to work better than AFP. (from my Lacie drive)
I have a suspicion that the problem is a mixture of DVDplayer that was not designed to play dvd's from the network and maybe the protocol stack on OS X? I guess the next stage is to sniff the network and see if packets are getting dropped.
Thanks for any pointers so far.
    Pete

  • Satellite A40-151 DVD drive will not play DVDs

hi my dvd drive will play music cd's but when i try to play a dvd it just makes a beep and nothing happens i tried windvd and it comes on but everything is blurred and still wont play a dvd

    Hello John
Please dont be mad on me but in your posting there is no question or something just small report that DVD drive will not play DVDs.
Anyway, if I am remembering well your unit is about 2 years old and has probably DVD-CDRW (Combo) drive. In my opinion there is no much to do. If the drive has problem with original DVDs I presume that there is laser calibrations problem and the device must be replaced.
I dont know how old is your unit exactly but please check if the warranty is still valid. If yes contact service partner in your country immediately. The drive should be replaced for free. If not you must replaced it on your own. If the drive replacement costs too much I recommend you to use external device (I do it with my old Satellite). On this way I can use newest and very fast super multi DL devices and also create own DVDs.
You can also try to find already used DVD/CD-RW drive and replace it alone. If you need assistance by replacement please write again.
Once again, dont be mad on me. I am ready to write my opinion but it is really annoying when someone write just one sentence and nothing more.
    Good luck!
