Save as jpg quality 12 gives smaller file than original

Hello all,
I have jpg photo's from a digital photocamera on my harddisk.
I import a photo of 3 Mbyte in Photoshop,
Then I save it as jpg with a quality setting of 12.
This gives a jpg file of only 2,1 Mbyte.
Does this mean that Photoshop compresses more than the camera,
and that I lose quality ?
Best regards and thanks in advance,
André.

In spite of the answers given by some of our best experts, you should know that the situation is more complicated than explained. That is probably why they did not go into more detail. Yet, you should be aware that under certain circumstances applying jpeg compression to an existing jpeg image can increase its file size.
If an image has received significant compression using jpeg encoding, its file size may have decreased, its image quality may also have perceptively decreased, some color shifts may have occurred and in the process it acquired some spatial jpeg artifacts as a result. Now if you come upon this image and you decide to open it in Photoshop and save it at the highest jpeg quality (12 in save as,  or 100 if in save for web) the resulting file will increase in size with NO increase in  image quality.  This is becasue you have, in effect, told photoshop to preserve as best it can those spatial artifacts created by the original compression and that takes more data. You can easily verify this for yourself by saving an image at a low quality setting and then reopen it and save it at a high quality setting and compare the file sizes and qualities.
Jpeg encodings are not all the same with one of the major differences being the quantization tables used. Another big difference occurs if one encoding scheme sub samples the chrominance (or luma) information and another does not at the same numerical quality setting. Photoshop's technique appears quite good. It is particularly good at minimizing image quality loss with repeated openings and resavings of the same image.
Why not leave the jpg as it is ?
Well, because you have told Photoshop that you want to control its quality by resaving it with a specific parameter. That parameter is not part of the jpeg standard, that is, for the same numerical quality setting a camera or a scanner or Photoshop or another image application will each implement that quality number differently.  If you want the original to stay as it started, then save its rendition in Photoshop under a new name leaving the original file unmodified.

  • How do I save from Illustrator to a manageable, smaller file.

My illustrator file size is 1.2gb and I need it smaller to send to the printers. What should I do.

    Fred,
Illy is unable to help you to get a higher (apparent) resolution.
Only vector artwork is resolution independent, and unless you patiently recreate with the proper tools such as the Pen Tool, you cannot vectorize and get anything as good as you have already; for photos, hand drawings, and the like, Live/Image Trace is the obvious way to vectorize, but that will not give any better appearance and therefore give you no advantage when you scale up.
But the required resolution depends entirely on the viewing distance, and it may be limited by the printing process in any case.
Have you asked the printer about the final resolution at the final size?
To assess whether the resoltution is sufficient, you may print the whole thing at a moderate size and then view it at the same ratio of size to distance, in other words at the same viewing angle.
Going from A4 (297) to 2,000 mm is 1 to 6.734, so if you print it at A4 and view it at 1/6.734 times (between 1/6 and 1/7) the viewing distance for the final sheet, you can see how pixelated it will appear (presuming your printer gives you the full resolution inherent in the images).

  • High-quality files on PC and smaller files on iPod

I want to maintain CD quality files on my PC and have lower quality files on my iPod and my girlfriends iPod nano in order to be able to carry around more music, etc.
I would like to continue using iTunes as we are already both familiar with its layout; however, I know that iTunes will not automatically copy smaller files than are on the computer to an iPod. But, I was hoping that someone had deviced a method of accomodating this even if it means duplicating all of my files (a set each of high and low quality) on my PC.
I have been struggling with this for several weeks on my own. I would even consider switching from iTunes if I could still easily synch with the iPods.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Peace
      Windows XP

    hiya!
however, I know that iTunes will not automatically copy smaller files than are on the computer to an iPod.
you can do this if you set up some smart playlists.
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
suppose you were to choose AAC as your compressed format. then create a smart playlist with the following rule:
    Kind contains AAC audio file
if your ipod had a high enough capacity, you could then simply head into your itunes "ipod" preference tab, select "automatically sync selected playlists only" and select the smart playlist containing only the AACs. so you'll end up with just the AAC versions of your music files showing up on the ipod.
if you already have the large, uncompressed versions of your songs in the library, you can use the "Convert" function to create the extra AAC copies of the songs:
iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format
(you can do this in bulk. just select all the songs you want to convert, and itunes will steadily work through converting each one you have selected.)
you can use a similar smart playlist technique to create a smart playlist that contains the uncompressed high-quality versions of the tracks. you can use that playlist to navigate through the uncompressed versions, for playing on the PC.

  • What's the best settings to Export movie for smaller file sizes?

Hi, I've been working on some helmet cam footage which was taken with Xvidmpeg4.avi and was advised to convert it to dvavi for editing in PrE, this created a huge file to work with, the original footage was 206mb and the finished edited dvavi file is now 1.56gb, what settings can I use to export the movie with a much smaller file size, but hopefully try to retain some quality, to upload to places like Vimeo? I thought I would try to export it in the same as the original footage Xvidmpeg4.avi thinking this might compress it again to something like the 206mb of the original and the original was good quality footage, but PrE just hangs up with a box stating 'Xvid Status (Not Responding)' and when I try to cancel that the whole thing crashes and closes? So when I go to File > Export > Movie, what would be the best settings in:
    General > File Type ?
    Video > Compressor
lots of options under compressor if I select the file type as Microsoft AVI, so I'm guessing something under that would compress it to a smaller file size but what, I could spend all night trying different settings so hoping for some advice?
Or, if I'm completely in the wrong place for the settings and should be doing something else please tell me?
    Thanks, Gav

Thanks for the replies, but to me it's still confusing - simply because there are so many settings, if I go to Share/Personal Computer I'm then presented with a whole load of settings
    NTSC Flash Video
    MPEG
    DVAVI
    Windows Media
    QuickTime
and under each of those is a lot more advanced settings?
I'm guessing I wouldn't use flash or quicktime, so which of the others would I use and what are the advanced settings to use as I can't find anything that is .wmv or .mov
What I've done with other videos that I've exported from PrE as dvavi is then to put it through Windows Movie Maker, Publish Movie, This Computer, then put the settings to Windows Media DVD Quality (PAL) (3.0 Mps) - this seemed to be the only setting that reduced the file size considerably but still had good quality, but it's still about twice the original file size?
This all seems long winded to me, open original file, convert original file, output another file, then output the file again in something else which then results in loss of quality and a larger file than the original? I'm ending up with lots of files, was hoping just to edit in Premiere then export/publish that edited clip and that would be it, then upload to the net.
Is it not possible to just edit my original footage and save it, just like you would with something like a word document, should I be using something else and not Premiere?
    Thanks.

  • Premiere Pro CS4: Exporting to High Quality SWF with Low File Size

Adobe Program: Premeire Pro CS4 (to build slide show video)
Adobe Program: Adobe Media Encoder (to export project into flash file)
Project Details: A 20 minute slide show with still images and audio.
Project Source: HDV 720p, 29.97 fps
Objective: Export slide show into a flash file so it can be watched online. The file must be small enough for most people to be able to stream the video but good quality (like videos found at Hulu.com).
Problem: I'm struggling to find an export setting that will let me maintain both good quality and a small file size.
The export setting that allows the best quality is:
    Format: FLV / F4V
    Preset: F4V - HD 720p
    File Size: 800MB
Troubleshooting History: I have tried the following Presets:
    F4V - Same as Source
    F4V - 1080p Source, Half Size
    F4V - 720p Source, Half Size
    F4V - 720p Source, Half Size, VBR 2pass
F4V - Web Large, Widescreen Source
While the file size is much reduced with these Presets, I lose too much video quality.
Inquiry: Does anyone have advice for meeting my listed objective?

I understand that if you want a smaller file you must sacrifice quality and if you want better quality you must expect a larger file size. I am looking for a solution in between the two extremes (again, I draw on the example of Hulu.com). Mainly, I am looking to reduce the file mentioned above from 800MB to about half that.
Does anyone know a way to manipulate the export settings to make that possible and still maintain as high a picture quality as possible?

Did you install plug-ins from a previous version of Photosop (or point the additional plug-ins to a previous version)? Photoshop CS6 has changed the location and way of installing plug-ins. All required plug-ins are stored internally–the location depends on the OS–and only non-Adobe 3rd party plug-ins should now be installed in the main Plug-ins folder.
You'll need to clean out and/or fix your plug-ins to get the correct behavior back...

  • Does anyone know why I get varying file sizes when I save a jpg (with same settings-None, 12, base "standard", preview checked) from PhotoshopCS5?

I opened a .psd file (300 ppi, CMYK, .jpgs (1626px x 2130px), I saved it as a jpg (None, 12, base "standard", preview checked).
I then closed the original .psd file.
I repeated those steps on the same file and saved a series of 6 .jpgs.
Of those 6 files, I received 2 large files (6.2MB) and 4 smaller (3.2MB) files.
My coworkers who were having trouble opening some of my jpg images in Windows Photo Gallery on Vista OS were able to open the smaller files but not the larger ones.
Do you have any idea why the same settings would give me different file sizes from CS5?
Is there a way I can make it consistently keep the smaller more compatible version?

How well a image data compresses depends on image content.   Image with High detail do not compress well image will little detail will compress well and the file size will be small. Compare a image of a blank white wall to a wall with a black and white checker board wall paper.  One is all white it white no other detail  to detail the other has squares that vary in size because of perspective angle and distance a lot of detail must be recorded.
I do not know why they can not open some of your images. File size should not be an issue.   All your image decoded are the same size  Width number of Pixels Height numbers of pixels background layer only for these are jpeg files.

  • How to save a jpg and give it a label automatically

Hi guys. I've found myself regularly repeating a set of actions and I was wondering if there was some way of automating them using CS4. The scenario is that I use Bridge as my main photo organisation app. I rate my shots from 1-5 stars and then tend to double click on ones to edit them in PS. After saving the edited shot as a jpg with "_edited" added to the filename, I apply a label which is called 'Enhanced' and then apply a 'Original' label to the original jpg. This lets me immediately filter of my edited/enhanced shots in Bridge and locate the originals if I need them. It also makes the edited files stand out when looked at in a file view of Explorer etc .
Is there an action or script I can create so that when I've finished editing a jpg it will take the original file name, add "_edited", save it as quality 10, baseline optimised, then apply the 'Optimised' label to the new file and exit the original jpg without saving but with applying the 'Original" label?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I have modified the function slightly, could you try this version please?

  • Help - problem with save for web when jpg image is placed in file

I have a jpg image that I placed in my Illustrator 5 file to use as a backdrop and then created several vector buttons on top.  When I attempt to create an arboard around a single button and then save for web, it ignores the artboard dimensions and shows the entire jpg dimensions.  If I create the same file without the jpg backdrop image, I am able to use the artboards to save just a single button.  Any time I place a jpg image in my Illustrator file and attempt to use the artboards, the artboards are ignored and the entire area of the jpg is saved.  I am able to use the slice tool to do the saving, but I prefer to use the artboards.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the artboards to work when a jpg is placed in the file?  Thanks.

    THANK YOU!!!
It says, "Clip to artboard".  I wasn't sure what clip meant, but that was it!  Thank you.

Opens image in Photoshop. Make changes, go to save.
Error message "Could not save x.jpg because the file is already in use or was left open by another application"
Using a free utility called Unlocker Assistant, it shows that the file has been locked by InDesign
The workaround is to then use Unlocker Assistant to unlock the image in in the Links folder, but this is a pain and it is happening too frequently.
Putting in that error message I get no google matches.
Anyone know why Indesign is locking the image, when it is the InDesign program that is supposed to be sending it to Photoshop for editing so it can be changed and then overwrite the original image?
Note that it is not consistent but I cannot find any pattern to determine why it sometimes fails and other times allows the altered image to be saved.

You will get a quicker response to post this in the InDesign Fourm http://forums.adobe.com/community/indesign/indesign_general

  • Can I save several JPG files as metadata using XMP in CS4?

Hello again. I'd like to save different thumbnails of the same file as metadata.
My current plugin saves some info about the layers (like "sessions"): enabled/disabled, opacity, text (if it is a text layer), etc. Thus, when I open a PSD template and I want to use only some layers and change some texts of text layers, I read the "sessions" metadata, select the one I need and start working.
Now I'd like to add another feature: a 200x200px thumbnail for each session, si I can preview what the PSD will look like when I load a session. Is it possible to store JPG (or PNG, or anything) files as a PSD metadata?
