Saveas Dialog hides filename

I recently saw a message in the Idea Exchange Make the Class Save dialog more like Save As by Darin.K that made a comment about the file name not completely appearing in the file box in a Saveas Dialog.  I had seen similar situations in the past.  I'm not sure when I first started seeing it.
I finally came across it again when I was trying to do a Save for Previous Version on a filename that was a bit longer than average, but not particularly long.  Why does the beginning of the file name disappear off to the left when there is plenty of space in the box to fit it all in?
I would consider this a minor bug in the SaveAs dialog box that should be fixed.  See below.  This is what it looks like when the dialog box first appears.

Hello all,
I just got out of a meeting I had with the R&D LabVIEW team with regards to this minor bug. As suspected, this is indeed a Windows issue as some of you mentioned before. Linked below is some "documentation" or published content on the issue. We are aware of this minor bug and according to Microsoft; they are not going to fix this issue in the near future.
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsdesktop/en-US/5890ff0d-8432-42bf-a52b-1b772d873d40/if...
http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/698560/common-file-open-dialog
The bug report, on our end, has been filed and is still open in our system. Therefore, we are continuing to look for ways to work around this Microsoft bug. As for now, just highlight the file name you are looking to "save as" and the whole name should appear. A minor inconvenience, but nothing mission critical.
Thanks to all for the posts

  • Set default filename for file save dialog on Save button click

    Hi,
    I am using AxAcroPDF (version 9.0) control to view pdf files in windows forms (C#). The pdf loads into the viewer in the form. Now, when I click on the Save button in the viewer, a Save dialog pops up with a default filename having complete path info.
    If I have loaded the pdf file into AxAcroPDF viewer with filename:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\KB_Kravi\My Documents\CustomerList.pdf"
    then in the save dialog, the default filename will be:
    "C_Documents_and_Settings_KB_Kravi_My Documents_CustomerList.pdf"
    Is there any option to set the default filename in the save dialog to some short name, instead of this lengthy name?
    Thanks,
    Ravi.

  • Acrobat PDF Printer STILL freezes when pasting filename into Save dialog

    Ref: Acrobat Printer Freezes on Save when CTL+V is used
    No change in Acrobat X.  Printing system still freezes up entirely when pasting a filename into the Save dialog, when printing to Adobe PDF printer.  Most often from Firefix (all versions through 28.0) but from other programs as well (also happens from MS Outlook 2010 32 bit).
    Any chance of an update from Adobe?
    Acrobat Pro X on Win 7 64 bit.  Multiple systems exhibit same behavior.
    Same issue occurs in Acrobat XI Standard.
    Workaround is possible by manually typing in filename, or renaming, but clearly this should not be happening.  If you forget, it requires a lot of steps (or a reboot) to try again.

    If you copy text directly from FireFox (or Word, or pretty much any program, other than Notepad), and try to paste into the Save Dialog to save your PDF, guaranteed crash.
    HOWEVER, if you paste the text into Notepad first, and then copy it again, you can then paste into the Save dialog no problem.  This is why the "test" that the Adobe rep did to recreate the problem was pointless: He managed to re-create the one workaround method that DOES work, instead of actually trying to do things the way that were causing the issue to show up.
    The problem appears to be related to any sort of "rich" text.  Windows ignores the "rich" information and only keeps the text if you paste into a filename in the system.  So Windows handles it just fine, it's Adobe's save dialog that can't handle it.  Copied text from Firefox is usually pretty clean (IE is worse), but there must be some formatting remnants in there that are giving Adobe fits (instead of properly ignoring them).  It may have something to do with 64-bit Windows and 32-bit Firefox and 64-bit Acrobat all coming together?  Copying and pasting between 64-bit and 32-bit programs usually has no issues, but in this case, it does (although the 64/32 bit relation is pure speculation on my end).
    But by "washing" your text through Notepad first, it completely strips it down to truly pure plain text, which can then be pasted into Adobe's Save dialog without a crash.  This adds an extra step, and should be entirely unnecessary, but it does work.  At least until Adobe fixes their program.

  • Set default filename in JFileChooser (Save Dialog)

    Hi,
    how can i set a default filename in a JFileChooser-Save-Dialog?

    Did you test this? It works fine for me.

  • Specifying Filename for SaveAs Dialog

    There are lots of threads out there about creating JavaScript to create a unique filename and then automatically save the file with a button click. However, I have a simpiler question. I don't want to automatically save. I want the button to open the SaveAs dialog just like with app.execMenuItem("SaveAs"). However, I would like to know if I can set the filename that would appear by default.
    I want the user to have the option of changing the file name, path, etc. with the dialog, but I do not want the current file name of the form to be the default that comes up. The form is too easily overwritten.
    As an aside, I tried making the file read only. The result is that the file remains unchanged, but the SaveAs dialog displays no error message and acts like it saved the file.
    Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

    Not possible with JavaScript.

  • Open/save dialog boxes stuck at (too small) default size

    I've been having a relatively small issue with Mountain Lion that has become a big hassle. In past versions of OS X, whenever I'd resize an open/save dialog box in an application, it would be that size the next time I went to open/save. In Mountain Lion, however, those dialog boxes always default to the smallest possible size (which is too small to read a filename longer than a few characters). so I have to resize the dialog box — every time! I open and save a lot of files, so this gets pretty tedious. This doesn't seem to happen in apple programs, but it definitely does in the Office Suite and the Adobe Creative Suite, especially in CS4 Photoshop and Illustrator. Might be I can fix it by myself but I can't imagine where I may dig it.

  • Need help adding a default file name in a file chooser of save dialog type

    I need to create a file chooser with save dialog type, how can I add a highlighted default file name into the File Name textfield? As in Microsoft Word, when you want to save a document, a default file name Doc1.doc will appear in the File name text field of the file chooser even when you change to other directories.

    For JRE 1.4.0 you can use this fix:
    public class FileChooserFix implements PropertyChangeListener {
      private String fileName;
       * @see PropertyChangeListener
      public void propertyChange(PropertyChangeEvent ev) {
        JFileChooser chooser = (JFileChooser)ev.getSource();
        if (JFileChooser.FILES_ONLY == chooser.getFileSelectionMode()) {
          if (JFileChooser.SELECTED_FILE_CHANGED_PROPERTY.equals(ev.getPropertyName())) {
            File selectedFile = (File)ev.getNewValue();
            if (selectedFile != null) {
              // remember fileName of selected file
              fileName = selectedFile.getName();
          if (fileName != null &&
              JFileChooser.DIRECTORY_CHANGED_PROPERTY.equals(ev.getPropertyName())) {
            // reset selected file
            File directory = (File)ev.getNewValue();
            chooser.setSelectedFile(new File(directory, fileName));
       * Convenience method to create a fixed file chooser.
       * @return      fixed file chooser
      public static JFileChooser create() {
        JFileChooser chooser = new JFileChooser();
        chooser.addPropertyChangeListener(new FileChooserFix());
        return chooser;

  • SAVE DIALOG!!!!

    why does a save dialog always point to the jsp as default?how can i specify a different file, to save......
    Are there any restrictions as to where my file has to exist on the server?
    If i say
    response.setContentType("application/zip");
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition","filename=charlie.zip");
    It looks for a zip file so how do i use it to look for an excel file, i don't have any servlet will it work?
    Any suggestions or help would be appreciated and thanks in advance......

    Hi,
    You can include these lines in your code to get Excel file.
    response.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-excel");
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition","attachment; filename=" + "example.xls" );
    Hope this helps you.

  • Reader X - Save dialog box popup issue

    Hello,
    I found that in Adobe Reader X whenever you goto save a file using just the "Save" (ctrl+S) option it brings up the Windows file system box prompt, which allows the user to see other windows files, folders, etc.. This is a huge issue for us as we do not want our users to be able to save to different locations or change the current filename on accident.
    How can I prevent this Save dialog from showing?  It is the dialog I would expect to get from choosing a "save as" option, not just your standard "save" option. Also, we are opening PDF files from our own software developed in C#. So if there are any open parameters I can pass to disable this save dialog that would be helpful as well.
    Please advise or provide insight.
    Thanks!
    Seth

    Seth -
    This is the expected behavior for Reader X, it's somewhat unexpected, so let me explain the rationale behind it:
    With Reader X, Adobe introduced the concept of sandbox - this mechanism severly curtails the rights provided to the Reader process to prevent exploits from running. In your case, Reader process cannot write to user's disk without users' explicit approval. The Save as dialog that you see is seeking that approval. Certain folders such as the TEMP folder are white listed, you should see if you can incorporate those into your workflows.

  • Download file in struts - File save dialog not showing up

    Hi,
    The issue i have is - the file save dialog box which should be displayed on file download is not showing up.
    I have a DAO being called from the Action form SaveDocumentAction which extends DispatchAction and has a download(mapping, request, response,..) method. Below are relevant portions of my code.
    public void showDocument(DocumentTO Doc, HttpServletResponse response){
    //get filename etc
    response.setContentType("application/x-download");
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=myFile.txt");
    OutputStream out = response.getOutputStream();
    //code for writing from input file to out
    I shld be getting a File Save dialog after response.setHeader(), but I am not. Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong. I have printed SOPs and all print fine, even the file writing part.

    Put this code into a servlet rather than a JSP.
    JSP are for returning text based HTML pages. It adds extra carriage returns into the response that will corrupt the file, and prevent the dialog showing up.
    This code is much better off being in a servlet
    If you are using a FileInputStream, you should be using a ServletOutputStream rather than the JSP writer: response.getOutputStream()
    When dealing with file input in a JSP/Servlet you should use the methods of ServletContext. getRealPath() turns a website relative file into a real location on disk. getResourceAsStream() opens the file for you. getResourceAsStream() is more reliable as it will work even if the web app is deployed in a packed WAR.

  • Prevent File Save Dialog appearing?

    I have been using Excel 2010 to create Word Documents and then use .SaveAs to save the newly created file without any issues
    When I moved to Office 2013 the same code now presents a File Save dialog box.
    I have researched the issue and can find no way to prevent the Dialog appearing (and worse regardless of the user selection the Excel code crashes)
    The following is a simplified version of the troublesome code
    Sub TestWordSaveAs2()
    Dim InvoiceProFormaFileName As Variant
    Dim NewFileName As String
    Dim WordApplication As Object
    Dim WordDoc As Object
      ' Prompt for a word document
      InvoiceProFormaFileName = Application.GetOpenFilename(FileFilter:="Word Documents, *.docx", Title:="Any Word File", MultiSelect:=False)
      Set WordApplication = CreateObject("Word.Application")
      Set WordDoc = WordApplication.Documents.Open(InvoiceProFormaFileName) ' Open the pro-forma invoice
      ' Create a new name
      NewFileName = Replace(InvoiceProFormaFileName, ".docx", "2.docx")
      WordDoc.SaveAs2 Filename:=NewFileName, FileFormat:=16, AddtoRecentFiles:=False ' <======= this line Shows the File Save Dialog and then fails
      WordDoc.Close SaveChanges:=0 ' wdDoNotSaveChanges
      ' Finished with the Word Application so can close
      WordApplication.Quit
    End Sub
    Thank you in advance

    Hi,
    I have create a doc file and a excel file in my pc, after I run the code you have provided ,and choose the doc file I just created, it runs without any save dialog. And My Office is Pro Plus 2013 .
    I have upload my sample to OneDrive, you can download it here:
    http://1drv.ms/1DhnMe5
    When you run this sample, will this show the save dialog again ?
    To narrow down this issue, can you create a new empty word and choose it in the excel, does it will happen again? if it is convenient, can you share the doc file you're using? Have you update your office ?

  • File Save dialog box not showing correct file name while saving file

    hi
    Currently, after the Submit button is hit, the File Save dialog box is displayed. If the user saves the file and then opens it then the output appears correct however if the user chooses to open the file without saving on the local machine then the correct viewer is not used to display the file. The name of the file is defaulted as qotSCopPrint.jsp and the default file viewer for jsp files is chosen to view the file. The format of the file is obviously not text (it is either pdf or rtf) so the output shows binary characters.

    Hi, im trying to set the default directory/path for the SaveAs Dialog called by wpg_docload.download_file.

    I don't believe you're allowed to set the directory path in the Content-Disposition (or any other) header. More accurately, you can set path in the filename, but browsers don't pay any attention to that, they only look at only the terminal filename.
    <p>According to RFC 2183, browsers are supposed to ignore any path information sent with the filename. Even though it's dated 1997, I believe this RFC is still in effect.
    <p>This was done as a security precaution against malicious web apps that might try to download into a system directory or other dangerous place. Also, browsers (usually) allow users to specify their own default download directories. Further, even if you could specify the path, you'd have to do it for any and all filesystems (Linux, Mac HFS, Mac OSX, Windows, etc etc).
