Saving Motion Effects for use in FCPX

Is it possible to save filters in Motion 5 to use in FCPX? Is it possible to save filters from Photoshop or any other applications or plug-ins for use in Motion 5 or FCPX?

Although I haven't done an complete inventory, AFAIK all the Motion filters are available in FCP. Some of them offer more parameter adjustments than the ones in FCP. If you're referring to custom effects, you could create them in Motion with drop zones and save them as templates.
Third party plug-ins for Motion and FCP are widely available, but do some research since there are currently a lot of reports of problems related to plug-ins.
Good luck.

  • What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC for use with FCPX?

What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC (windows 7) for use with FCPX? I've tried Camtasia and camstudio however the avi files cannot be imported by FCPX and the mov files produced by these programs are shown as just black screens in FCPX.

I use to face this issue every now and then (as a freelancer) when I use to cut on FCP7.
if the material is DV and was captured using Sony VEGAS, Premiere or Edius, the footage generally worked fine. You'll find most people will tell you to convert it regardless, however I found no issues working with them.
A problem you'll definitely face is HDV material. Most PC editing software write HDV in their own codec, which can't be read in FCP.
The only thing I can think of is to try converting HDV meaterial to QuickTime using something like MPEG Streamclip, or something similar.
    Good luck

  • How to properly timewarp 59.94 footage for slow motion effect for 29.97 output

I have footage filmed in 59.94 that I want to use for slow motion effects and output to 29.97. Using timewarp I seem to get duplicate frames at times. What would the best workflow to accomplish the cleanest result? I've tried interpreting the footage at 29.97 and keeping it at its native 59.94. At this point I feel like I'm just confusing myself further by just trying random things. Thanks!

Always interpret footage as what it really is. If it is really 59.94 progressive then that's what it should be interpreted as. It will play at the right speed in any comp of any frame rate. IOW, if the footage is 10 seconds and you put it in a 99fps comp and play it back at full frame rate the clip will still be 10 seconds long. If you put it in a comp that's 15 frames per second, the clip will still be 10 seconds long.
    Make sure you understand that.
There is a chance, and a good chance, that your footage is actually full frame 59.94 fps video. That's why I suggested putting it in a comp that's also 59.94 fps and checking for duplicate frames.
There is also a chance that your footage is actually 29.97 fps interlaced. If you separate fields and look at the footage in a 59.94 fps comp you won't see any duplicate frames.
To change the speed of the clip you just need to apply Time Remapping, Time Warp, or any of the other Time Time tools in AE. It doesn't make any difference what the frame rate of the composition is, you'll be changing the length of the clip.
To keep from creating duplicate frames you either need software that interprets the new, extra frames or you need to use an exact whole number multiple of the frame rate for rendering.
Where did you get the footage? What Camera? What are you trying to do with it? What is the final destination (delivery) for your project.

  • Tips on laptop purchase for use with FCPX

    Hello
I hope to soon purchase a Mac laptop to use with FCPX. It's been a while, I've always bought MB Pros, but I thought I'd ask what would be the best option and why, and if Mac Air notebooks or the MacBook would do just as well for editing as the MB Pro.
How do Mac Air, MacBook and MB Pro stack up?
Is the Retina Display useful or not for editing? I thought I'd heard negative comments about it for editing.
    Do I need a 7200rpm drive?
Is Flash storage the best option?
    What graphics card is best?
Should I get the usb super drive? I've always used FW drives.
Is there even a FW port? If not, the adaptor seems mandatory.
What's up with Thunderbolt storage? Better than FW?
Should I be moving away from FW drives?
Where's the best place to buy? I'm looking on Amazon and Ebay.
Anyways, any tips or advice would be much appreciated.
    best,
    elmer

Advice is to max out as much as you can afford. Sdd, best gpu etc.  For simple editits, most machines will work, but when you start using effects, colur correction etc, things will go much faster. Personally i just order a iMac retina with max out specs.

  • Can someone suggest an affordable external hard drive for use with FCPX and video editing on my Macbook Pro Retina

I have a Macbook Pro Retina from 2012 and I only got the 250GB hard drive.  I'm getting ready to purchase a Panosonic HC-X920 to use with Final Cut Pro X already installed on my laptop.  Since I know the file sizes are going to be so big, can anyone suggest an affordable external drive fast enough to keep up with editing the video?  I'm not a pro and use it for family and personal projects.
I prefer some thunderbolt options since I haven't had a chance to use the inputs since I got my macbook pro. I just don't know what is necessarily too little or too big and too cheap and too expensive for my needs.  Thank you.

OWC is a Mac specialist and a very trustworthy vendor.  I have dealt with them and their technical stall on many occasions.  Hence you may look at what they offer and be assured that they will stand behind what they sell:

I suspect that for your needs, a 1 TB drive is going to be the minimum.
    Ciao.

  • External Storage recommended for use with FCPX

    Hi everyone,
I want to improve FCPX performance and work with my events and projects on one or two external HDDs.
I am an amateur editor and mostly work with    720p, 120 fps, h.264 optimized to ProRes 422 footage on mostly single camera projects.
Can anyone recommend a portable product that will work for my purposes?  Preferably one that I don't have to spend $1000+ on (like drobo or promise).
Is an external USB3 Drive powerful enough? Do I need thunderbolt?
Thanks so much for your answers and help!
    Mike
    P.s. Working with a MBP 15" Retina, 2,6 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 750GB SSD.

120fps?  What camera did this media come from?
FW800 minimum, Thunderbolt is best.  You're budget will determine your limits.  Will USB 3.0 be enough?  It all depends on what format you're editing.  If you transcode everything to ProRes, just about anything will work. Firewire 800 will work, unless you're doing a lot of compositing and/or very long projects.
Get the format you can afford.  Be sure spinning disk drives (your price range) are 7200rpm!  Vital!
Minimum would be FW800, next up would be USB 3.0, next up would be Thunderbolt, as far as speed.  Avoid SSD drives as you'll not get much storage space for the amount you sound like you have to spend.

  • Q re: Digitizing 4-track reels for use in FCPX

    Hi
I'm having 2 4-track reels from the 80s digitized. As part of the process they can reduce hiss and normalize. I told them to just do the hiss reduction. Should I have them do the normalization, too? I can if it seems wise tho can't FCPX do so also?
    elmer

    Ben!
    Thanks for the reply.
No, I wouldn't think they are professional audio engineers, just a 'house' that can digitize stuff.
I haven't heard the reel, it's something from '85. Not having digitized reels before, I didn't know that normalizing was something that was done. Seems like I made the right choice, and doesn't FCPX have something in the audio enhancements that can do the same thing? And if I have the reels mixed for cd I assume the pro there can do it then.
ps Isn't normalizing just mostly raising the levels?

  • Illustrator CS4 saving vector art for Microsoft Word

I have a logo created in Illustrator CS4. I saved the file for use in Microsoft Office using the "save for Office", exporting as a .wmf, and even saving the vector art in Photoshop as a .png. I can get a variety of formats to work well in Word documents.
Here is the problem. The Word document will eventually be saved as a PDF. When the file is saved as a PDF document (from Word), the color is changing in the PDF file. How can I correct this? I've tried saving in both rgb and cmyk color modes, but the color changes once it hits Acrobat and is printing differently than the Word file. It is driving me crazy and I cannot figure this out.
    Thanks for any help!
    Mary

The type is not vector it is raster it is no longer outline.
Check to see if you can select the individual letters in AI if you cannot it has be rasterized and is an image not vector.
If you open my files you will see that they are selectable in Acrobat and AI.
You seem confused and I do not understand why.
Attached is a word file with vector art and type make a  pdf from that and see the difference.
Also make certain you have Illustrator editing capabilities turned on when exporting to pdf from AI.
Can you attach one of the eps or the esp you made the sample file from.
Do not rasterize the outline text art.
It won't let me attach a word document.

  • Converting AVI to use in FCPX

I have some old AVI files that were imported using a Canopus REX-RT or Storm card 10 years ago, can't remember which. I can use the AVI files in Premiere and Windows Media Player but I can't find any converter that will convert these files to MOV for use in FCPX. Have tried VLC/Wondershare/Handbrake/MovAvi.
I suspect the video was filmed in LP. They all show a video with multiple bands through the video, bit like an interlace.
I can import LP video from my old Canon XM-1 directly in to FCPX but I don't have the tapes for these old AVI videos.
I can/could go back to Premiere to edit this stock, but would rather use FCPX, simply for its ease of use and speed.
Anyone got any ideas on this?

Actually I've solved this one, with a bit of searching!
I found a programme that will change the CODEC to a Windows CODEC. www.videohelp.com/tools/DVdate
I could only get this to work under Windows XP. It didn't recognise the Canopus CODEC but it happily changed it to a windows CODEC, ehich was then recognisable to the converter programmes.
Then Video Converter Ultimate converts it directly to a FCPX format - job done!

  • Motion effect bad linking

here is the problem. in my sequence, a day or so after cutting with it, any motion effect i use to slow down a clip comes back as the entire master clip sped up as fast as can be. so instead of having my cut-in slow mo clip, i have the same size clip, only the entire master clip sped up to fit. its the same on all the old duplicate sequences as well. never seen this before, not sure what to do. any help is appreciated. dh

goto sequence settings and set the field dominance to none. Maybe you won't have to do that.

  • How about using a 60fps video for a smooth slow motion effect in a 30fps project ?

    Hey all,
I happen to have a video camera that is able to shoot either in 720p/60fps or 720p/30fps.
As you guessed it, 60 fps mode is very useful for action sports when you want to do some slow motion effect running very smoothly.
I have few questions I would love to be answered, and I was not able to find answers till now.
    Here they are :
1/ If I want my final video file to be, let's say, 25 fps, is it mandatory that my project is 25 fps too ?
What will happen if I do a 30fps project and that I export to a 25fps file ? Does Premiere simply remove some extra frames ? Or will it lead to a longer video ? What consequence on the final result if frames are removed ? I mean, will I be able to see any difference or will the difference remain theorical ?
2/ Let's say I have both 30fps and 60fps videos. I set my project to 30fps. If I import my 60fps video to the timeline, it will be adjusted to 30fps and some frames disappear to keep the duration the same. Okay, this is clear to me.
But now, what if I import my 60fps to the timeline, but set the speed to 50% ? Will Premiere apply the 50% to the original file (therefore I should have all the frames displayed on the timeline : 60/2=30 fps), or to the 30fps-adjusted file of the timeline, leading to some jerky footage?
3/ If I want to use my 60fps for slow motion purpose in my 30fps project, would it be a good idea to right-click on this file in the project windows, going to the "modify" menu to set the image frequency to 30fps ?
Because while doing so, if I drag the file to the timeline, I noticed it would last 2 times longer (resulting in a slow motion video) Does that mean that ALL the frames of the original video are displayed ? Can someone tell me what exactly does Premiere ?
I would be very grateful if someone could tell me what are the correct settings to chose in order to realise the best slow motion videos as possible.
    Thanks in advance !

With due respect... this does not answer my question and does not help me that much , but anyway, thank you for the very constructive answer ^^.
I'm not sure I would even have considered doing this by myself...
I hope I do not get this kind of answer because you feel like my question was silly or unpolite... To my mind this was a pretty serious question.
Shooternz, next time you need to go 150 km far away from where you are, go by feet rather than with a car, I'm sure you will have plenty of satisfaction too. Just cross the fingers for you not to be in a hurry while it's raining outside.
Well, I may be naive but i thought some experts already had the answer to this (I guess I'm not the only one who intend to do some slo mo), and would have been kind enough to share this knowledge with me. That's what sometimes happens in communities.
Please note I do not intend others to do the job for me, I'm just asking if someone already knows the answer.
I asked this question because I couldn't find any documentation about this, and I guess asking on internet was the next step, as testing would be like the last resort, being very time consuming.
It was easy to check the effect of dragging a file to the timeline to see if it played normally or not, but it's definitely not to count and compare each frame of some sample file to find if some are lacking, or have been doubled or what....
I assume I would be very happy with just a simple theorical answer either...
So once again, if someone already has been into such questions, I would really pleased him or her to share or report what they experienced. Thanks in advance.

  • Saving After Effects CS 6 projects for use in CS 5.5

    Hello all,
I'm a university student who has the academic version of After Effects CS 6 for use in my media classes. It works wonderfully and has the potential to be a real time-saver... I live off-campus and can't always get to the lab to work on my projects. That being the case, there's a problem in transferring the work to the lab machines... they have Adobe CS 5.5 installed, not CS 6. When I tried to work on the project from home on the lab computer, it throws up a compatibility error and doesn't open.
If I can't open the projects at school, then the point of using CS 6 at home is moot. How do I save projects on my CS 6 machine as to be able to open them on CS 5.5 machines?

You can also use pt_OpenSesame, a script by Paul Tuersley, to convert a project to a version that can be opened by previous versions of After Effects.

    Thanks for the reply.
I checked the link that I posted back in post 3 of your thread. It is working with at least Firefox and Chrome.
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE12: Motion Tracking/What To Use To Track Object?
    What browser are you using?
The blog post contains significant information related to Premiere Elements 12 Motion Tracking. But, if you cannot access it for some reason, then we will need to troubleshoot via communications in the thread.
SG has asked if you are able to create Motion Tracking effect using one of the graphics included with the program. We will watch for your response to him on that question. Please include in your message to him whether you can obtain your file to track the object using Organizer Tab or Project Assets routes as well as Graphics Tab.
The following is an excerpt from the blog post referenced....
    SOLUTION
Various tutorials and online comments have pointed to places other than Graphics Tab where objects can be selected and used to track the moving object in the video when the Motion Tracking workspace is opened in the Expert or Quick workspace.
Organizer Tab, Expert or Quick workspace to access Elements Organizer 12. Cascade Windows and drag a video or photo from Elements Organizer into the yellow track box of Motion Tracking workspace.
Project Assets, Expert workspace. Drag text, video, or photos from opened Project Assets into the yellow track box of Motion Tracking workspace.
Graphics Tab, Expert or Quick workspace. Create a png file (graphic) or prtl file (text) and place it in Clip Arts in the Program Files of the program to have a permanent resource. Then from Graphics Tab, drag the newly created graphic or text object into yellow track box of Motion Tracking workspace.
    Thanks.
